  I'm very new to Version Control, and I was wondering if I could get some advice on how it can fit into website design. At the moment I'm working on a typical, simple website that includes images: A few .html files and a .css file One folder full of photographs Another folder with the corresponding thumbnails Can I just put the whole lot in a repository? Or is there a better way I could apply Version Control to it? How should I deal with the images? edit: How well will it work with changes to the images? What if I decide to try and optimise my photographs or resize them. I wont be able to see what exactly changed about the images, should comments be enough to keep track of that?

However, what I really want is not to set the height but let it to change according to the content size.   Hi, I recently posted a question about getting last 3 results in table in the correct order. I now want the get all comments apart from the last 3 in the correct order. Here is my syntax; SELECT * FROM (SELECT * FROM $table ORDER BY ID DESC OFFSET 3) AS T ORDER BY TIME_STAMP the error i am receiving is; You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'OFFSET, 3) AS T ORDER BY TIME_STAMP' at line 1 I can't seem to get it to work. • OpenID PAM module

  I am looking for a PAM module that can use OpenID to do the authentication. My idea is that I want to logon my Linux box using my gmail account and password. I found there is a open source project in Google Code which seems to be doing the things I want but I don't see any code available for download. I saw there are so many examples or implementations but they are all about web apps. Is there any non-web based OpenID applications in the world? Is it technically possible to make a non-web based OpenID application? I naively think that it should be possible. I can emulate whatever packets the browser send out to the OpenID provider and get back the result. As long as my Linux box is connected to the Internet, I should be able to use my OpenID to login. Appreciate any comments, suggestions or pointers on how to make an OpenID PAM module. Thanks!

• When to stop following the advice of static code analysis?

  I do use static code analysis on a project with more than 100.000 lines of Java code for quite a while now. I started with Findbugs, which gave me around 1500 issues at the beginning. I fixed the most severe over time and started using additional tools like PMD, Lint4J, JNorm and now Enerjy. With the more severe issues being fixed, there is a huge number of low severity issues. How do you handle these low priority issues? Do you try fixing all of them? Or only in newly written code? Do you regularly disable certain rules? (I found that I do on nearly any of the available tools). And if you ignore or disable rules, do you document those? What do your managers say about "leaving some thousand low priority issues not fixed"? Do you use (multiple) tool specific comments in the code or is there any better way?

  I've been stuck with the math in a Flash project? It's a loose design pattern my director formulated. My goal is to keep the project object oriented, and get 'non Flash obstacles' off my plate. Do you recommend using parsing engines for processing math? XML values going to AS3, updating a changing acceleration formula. I don't hate math, but it just doesn't seem OOP or good project planning to have the math stuck in Flash. Your comments are welcome.

  I on the Show of "Contacts" and want, from that page, to submit a Comment that is related to the Contact. I learned this on a pretty outdated book. Basically, I want to add a new object belonging to a Model while on the Show of a different Model. Would formtastic help me, and if so, how?

• printing out posts

  Hi, I'm using the Firefox browser and trying to print out my posts (and replies). The pdf output doesn't include the comments in the posts. How to make sure that everything which is on the page gets printed? Same goes for codes for which are in a window. Only the visible part of the code gets printed. These are not programming questions :) but I hope that someone can suggest how to get proper printouts of the posts. Thanks a lot...

• How do I secure a folder used to let users upload files?

  I have a folder in my web server used for the users to upload photos using an ASP page. Is it safe enough to give IUSR write permissions to the folder? Must I secure something else? I am afraid of hackers bypassing the ASP page and uploading content directly to the folder. I'm using ASP classic and IIS6 on Windows 2003 Server. The upload is through HTTP, not FTP. • How do I create a user history?

  I want to create a user history function that allows shows users what they done. ex: commented on an ad, posted an ad, voted on an ad, etc. How exactly do I do this? I was thinking about... in my site, when they log in it stores their user_id ($_SESSION['user_id']) so I guess whenever an user posts an ad(postad.php), comments(comment.php), I would just store in a database table "userhistory" what they did based on whenever or not their user_id was activate. When they comment, I store the user_id in the comment dbc table, so I'll also store it in the "userhistory" table. And then I would just queries all the rows in the dbc for the user to show it Any steps/improvements I can make? :)

I have placed a renamed copy of the config.js file in my webroot and call it with customConfig. It is not working for me though. Is my syntax creating any issues? • How to call a Zend lucene search function?

  I inherited a Zend project devoid of comments and I didn't get to talk to the previous developer. Since I have no Zend experience I'm having some issues :) I'd like to print out some variables inside an function that indexes items from the site using Zend_Search_Lucene because I think something is going wrong here. From what I've read, ::create creates a new index and ::open updates it. So it's in this ::open function I'd like to print out some variables. The name and params of the function are below. Does anyone have any idea how this function can be called so I can run some tests? private function search($category,$string,$page = 1,$itemsByPage = 5) EDIT: OR, is there a way I can nuke the existing index and force it to be rebuilt completely, for example by deleting the index files on the FS and then performing some searches?

  I was involved in an interesting debate about the visibility of domain models & was wondering if people here have any good guidance. Per my understanding of MDA, we need not expose the domain model throughout the application layers & tiers The reason being that any change to the domain model has an impact in the overall application The wise thing to do would be to expose light-weight object (DTO's) which are a small sub-set of the domain model to abstract the actual model On the flip side, any change to the domain model would mean changing various DTO's throughout the application for the change to be visible, while if we do expose the domain model, then the change is in a single location Hope to see some comments & thoughts about this. • jQuery .toggle() called by window.setInterval() not functioning

I set breakpoints on the lines directly beneath the comments in the code above. Breakpoint 1 hits every 5 seconds. However, Breakpoint 2 and 3 never hit. Why are neither of the toggle function's handlers firing?

  Consider the 0/1 knapsack problem. The standard Dynamic Programming algorithm applies only when the capacity as well as the weights to fill the knapsack with are integers/ rational numbers. What do you do when the capacity/weights are irrational? The issue is that we can't memoize like we do for integer weights because we may need potentially infinite decimal places for irrational weights - leading to an infinitely large number of columns for the Dynamic Programming Table . Is there any standard method for solving this? Any comments on the complexity of this problem? Any heuristics? What about associated recurrences like (for example): f(x)=1, for x< sqrt(2) f(x)=f(x-sqrt(2))+sqrt(3)

• Get/save parameters to an expected JMock method call?

  Hi, I want to test an "Adapter" object that when it receives an xml message, it digest it to a Message object, puts message ID + CorrelationID both with timestamps and forwards it to a Client object.=20 A message can be correlated to a previous one (e.g. m2.correlationID =3D m1.ID). I mock the Client, and check that Adapter successfully calls "client.forwardMessage(m)" twice with first message with null correlationID, and a second with a not-null correlationID. However, I would like to precisely test that the correlationIDs are set correctly, by grabing the IDs (e.g. m1.ID). But I couldn't find anyway to do so. There is a jira about adding the feature, but no one commented and it is unassigned. Is this really unimplemented? I read about the alternative of redesigning the Adapter to use an IdGenerator object, which I can stub, but I think there will be too many objects.=20 Don't you think it adds unnecessary complexity to split objects to a so fine granularity? • config.cache_classes = true in production mode has problems in IE

  Hi Dears, In my rails app. I am using link_to_function to bring an ajax tabs in one page.Everything works fine in Moazilla and other browsers. But in IE the tabs are not loading only when the server is started in production mode(doesn't matter whether its webrick or mongrel). In development mode everything is fine. So I figured out that the issue was with one line config.cache_classes = true in app/config/environments/production.rb when i changed the above code to config.cache_classes = false everything works fine. So I assume caching causes problem in rails. When I Googled about this I found many have the issues with caching. So my question is 1) is there any other fix for this? 2) Does this fix (config.cache_classes = false) causes any performance issues. If then how to overcome that? Any comments and suggestions are welcome. Techno_log

I have a sorted list of entries stating a production value in a given interval. • How can I create a custom cleanup mode for git?

  Git's default cleanup of strip removes all lines starting with a # character. Unfortunately, the Trac engine's wiki formatter uses hashes in the beginning of a code block to denote the syntax type. Additionally any code added verbatim might include hashes as they are a common comment prefix; Perl comes to mind. In the following example the comments all get destroyed by git's cleanup mode. Example: {{{ #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; # say hi to the user. print "hello world\n"; }}} I'd like to use a custom filter that removes all lines beginning with a hash from the bottom of the file upwards. Leaving those lines that being with a hash that are embedded in the commit message I wrote alone. Where or how can I specify this in git? Note, creating a sed or perl script to perform the operation is not a problem, just knowing where to hook it into git is the question.
