• OpenVPN IPv6 over IPv4 tunnel

  Today I installed OpenVPN 2.3rc2 on both my windows 7 client machine and centos 6 server. This new version of OpenVPN provides full compatibility for IPv6. The Problem: I am currently able to connect to the server (through the IPv4 tunnel) and ping the IPv6 address which is assigned to my client and I can also ping the tun0 interface on the server. However, I cannot browse to any IPv6 websites. My vps provider has given me this: 2607:f840:0044:0022:0000:0000:0000:0000/64 is routed to this server (2607:f840:0:3f:0:0:0:eda). After connecting as the first client, I can ping from my windows client machine 2607:f740:44:22::1 and 2607:f740:44:22::1000. However, I have no access to IPv6 websites. I believe the problem is that the tun0 IPv6 addressees are not being forwarded to the eth0 interface. • How can I measure TCP timeout limit on NAT firewall for setting keepalive interval?

  A new (NAT) firewall appliance was recently installed at $WORK. Since then, I'm getting many network timeouts and interruptions, especially for operations which would require the server to think for a bit without a response (svn update, rsync, etc.). Inbound SSH sessions over VPN also timeout frequently. That clearly suggests I need to adjust the TCP (and ssh) keepalive time on the servers in question in order to reduce these errors. But what is the appropriate value I should use? Assuming I have machines on both sides of the firewall between which I can make a connection, is there a way to measure what the time limit on TCP connections might be for this firewall? In theory, I would send a packet with gradually increasing intervals until the connection is lost. Any tools that might help (free or open source would be best, but I'm open to other suggestions)? The appliance is not under my control, so I can't just get the value, though I am attempting to ask what it currently is and if I can get it increased.

• backuppc - how to backup remote (over the internet) clients?

  I am testing out backuppc, which works great so far backing up windows clients on a LAN via SMB (no backup client/agent required). However I have quite a few laptops and desktops that are in various remote locations - some of which move around. I need some way to have that remote computer create an outgoing connection for backup purposes (Windows XP/7). I know backuppc supports smb, rsync and 'tar', but I believe these are all connections going from the server TO the client. SO, I either need a way to vpn the client on a timed basis, or it would be a lot better if the client could some how connect to the server (ssh?) and initiate it's own backup somehow (rsync?). Of course this all needs to be pre-installed by me and require no maintenance by the end user, no dialogs on their side. What do you think?

• sql user not associated with a trusted connection

  just setup a new server with sql server express 2005. (want to connect remotely) I set logins both windows and sql I modified so both local and remote connections are allowed I restarted the server windows firewall is not connected. (have an external firewall with a hole at port 1443) user account is active, no password policy or forcing to change on next login etc. If I even try to connect using this username locally on the server using 'file | connect to object explorer' I get the same message that the user is not associated to a trusted connection.

• Establish direct cable connection between Windows 8 PCs in home network

  I'm running two PCs, a desktop and a laptop with Windows 8 Release Preview ("Build 8400"). They are connected to the same router in infrastructure mode, thereby having wireless internet. Due to often file synchronization between the machines I want to establish a cable connection that allows direct file transfer, without needing to use the wireless. When I plug in the cable (normal, not cross-over), I see in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections": "Ethernet - unidentified Network" on both PCs. Transferring a file between both still only uses the WiFi via the Router. I noticed that when turning off the wifi on one PC, I can set up a shared internet connection that will work via Ethernet-cable, but since sometimes only one PC runs, sometimes the other one, I do not want to have the internet of one machine to be dependent on the other one being switched on. I do not have a crossover-cable, but since I did connect the PCs already successfully (just without both being on the internet), I'm sure that this should also work with a normal ethernet cable.

• Image doesn't fill monitor when connected via HDMI

  Connecting a Dell Studio Slim to a Dell ST2210 21.5" monitor. The PC has a ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card. The video card has DVI and HDMI connections. When I connect with the DVI everything works fine. When I connect with the HMDI the image doesn't fill the screen, i.e. there's a approx 1 inch black border around the image. Win7 tells me the res is 1920x1080 (the native res of the monitor). Tried rebooting, no luck.

• postgresql 9.1 Multiple Cluster on same host

  I have 2 cluster databases, running on the same host, Ubuntu. My fist database port is set to default but my second database port is set to 5433 in the postgresql.conf file. While everything is ok with local connections, I cannot connect using any of my tools to the second database with port 5433, including pgAdmin. Please help. How can I set up SSL to work on my localhost machine? I will enable my Sinatra app to only allow secure connections so I need to test this both in development and production. Currently, I am running the following locally: SERVER= nginx/1.6.0 + Phusion Passenger 4.0.42 Also, where is my nginx folder? I don't have it installed in the normal location (Ubuntu) so this must come custom with Passenger?

• cisco vpn client randomly disconnects with pfSense

  My network has two gateways, one is a pfSense box that everyone uses. The other one is a TP-Link firewall essentially for tests. Some machines inside my network need to access a VPN through the Cisco VPN client. If one of those machines is using the pfSense box as the gateway, I experience random connection drops on the VPN. If I am using the TP-Link gateway that doesn't happen. I've tried changing the MTU in the pfSense box and that improved things a little bit but didn't really solve the problem. I also followed the guidelines for traffic shaping in pfSense and the connections still drop quite often. Ideas?

  I'm developing an application for my company that will require a lot of compute capacity (running some very big mathematical calculations), and looking for some form of server setup to do this. For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

• How to show what proxies/firewalls are enabled on Windows XP?

  Hi, I'm trying to fix a Windows XP PC that is having a strange problem. The computer can't seem to connect to the internet, even though an internet connection is present. The router and internet is working fine as I've connected a laptop to it via LAN and wireless and both worked fine. The PC in question is connected to the router as it has an IP from the DHCP. The problem is I can't connect to nor ping any internet address from the PC. I can't even connect to the router admin itself. I've tried both LAN ports in the PC, same problem and both. I'm assuming there's a proxy or firewall on the PC stopping the connections, I just don't know how to find them or see which one is causing the issue. So my question is how do I on Windows XP display the system proxy settings and/or any firewalls that are running? Cheers.

• Outbound Traffic Logging on ASA 5520 possible?

  Taking a look at the ASDM (6.4) for my ASA 5520, I get a nice summary of the traffic status, with items like "interface traffic usage", and "connections per second". This works well, but only shows the data for the last 5-6 minutes or so. Recently, I've been asked whether it's possible to pull up this same type of traffic data for a particular time in the past. (Such as: Find the traffic usage for a 3 minute period from date xx:xx:xx @ time xx:xx:xx) I've noticed that my ASA 5520 is logging the warning, errors, etc that it is processing. But traffic data is not logged (yet) according to my search through the ASA. Is logging the traffic data amounts (as wondered above) actually a possibility? Is there any way to find out the past data for traffic and such values? Thanks!

  I've setup Virtual PC and XP Mode on my Windows 7 Pro. Using Apache 2.0.52 I have no problems having my website up and running on the Windows 7 machine. But Under VPC/XP Mode the best I can do is Localhost mode. What do I need to do to enable http connections? I need the XP Mode as besides the website I also run a Web BBS and a Dos based (via telnet) BBS. Some of the apps in the Dos BBS just won't work under 64 bit, no matter what setting (capability) are used. Thanks in advance...

• Installing raid controller forces reinstall of Windows Server 2008

  So, I've tried two different RAID controllers that have external SATA connections on my Server 2008 machine. I can install the hardware, boot into Windows, install the drivers and reboot again. No problems. However, as soon as I try to use eSATA-connected drives and reboot something happens to the Windows install and I can no longer boot into Windows. I tried repairing from the command line, and the end result is that repair console tells me I have 0 Windows installations (?). I end up having no choice but to reinstall Windows to get back on track. I must be doing something fundamentally wrong here, but I don't know what :(

• How to find malicious IPs?

  Cacti shows irregular and pretty steady high bandwidth to my server (40x the normal) so I guess the server is udnder some sort of DDoS attack. The incoming bandwidth has not paralyzed my server, but of course consuming the bandwidth and affects performance so I am keen to figure out the possible culprits IPs add them to my deny list or otherwise counter them. When I run: netstat -ntu | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n I get a long list of IPs with up to 400 connections each. I checked the most numerous occurring IPs but they come from my CDN. So I am wondering what is the best way to help monitor the requests that each IP make in order to pinpoint the malicious ones.   Our problem: The client, a normal user, has to be able to reset multiple passwords at once. Around 30 in one go. This would call for powershell or something along these lines, but for AD and Powershell one needs to be domain administrator. My solution would be to make a service that runs on the AD server and take connections from a program. The service would then do the AD changes. • Manually forcing TCP connection to retry

  I have a TCP connection (SSH session to some computer for example) Network suddenly goes down and drops all packets (disconnected cable, out of range). TCP resends packets again and again, retrying with increasing delays. I see the problem and plug the cable back (or restore network somehow). TCP connection finally successfully resends some packet and continues. The problem is that I need to wait for a some timeout on point 5. I want to use my opened SSH session now and not wait for 5-10 seconds until it finds out that connection is working again. How to force all TCP connections to resend data without delays in GNU/Linux?

Our VOIP provider gave up and is recommending an open source vendor, pfSense. A little background: We have about 30 users in our network. We use a few IPSec VPN connections for remote networks. • Windows 7 doesn't connect to mapped drives at start up.....

  We are testing Windows 7 (32bit version) and logon to a windows 2003 domain that runs a logon script whichs maps our drive letters. We have no control over the domain. Of our 7 test users, 5 continually recieve red X's on their network drives after they logon. Double clicking on them connects the drives, however, any aplpication that requires files on the fileserver will fail since it thinks it has no connection to the drive. We have tried several reg edits (Enable Linked connections, KeepConn), we have tried to find information in the event viewer to no avail. We have also looked at any differences in NIC driver versions (none). The other 2 computers that can connect without problem are local admins, but, if we logon to the 5 that have the problem with the local admin credentials we get the red x's as well??? This one is a real head scratcher......

  Im using Windows Xp professional Sp2 Whenever i start my windows, svchost.exe starts connecting to all the possible ips on lan like from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.200 The local port ranges from 1000-1099 and the remote port being 445. After its done with the local ips, it starts connecting to other random ips. I tried blocking connections to the port 445 using the local security polices but it didn't work Is there any possible way i could prevent svchost from connecting to these ips without involving any firewall installed ? since my pc slows down due to the load I'd be thankful for any advices

• Traffic shaping L2TP/IPsec VPN (via accounts not connection)

  I need to be able to control the amount of bandwidth a specific user account can use on a VPN connection. One account I want to be able to use the VPN with no restrictions and another account I want to limit to a reasonable amount of bandwidth (say 10GB or so a month). I'm aware that you can traffic shape individual connections but that does not quite solve the problem as the limited account can just disconnect and reconnect to get a new connection. I need to be able to limit bandwidth on a login basis for a given period of time (monthly limit). I'm really not that familiar with traffic shaping in general so any advice would be appreciated. • Wireless Connection unstable with multiple devices connected

  My wireless network works perfectly when only 1 device is connected. Super fast, full strength. But as soon as multiple devices are connected to the wireless network the connections become unstable (constantly losing connection with the internet, not the network itself). It's quite annoying. I have a Sitecom Wireless 300N XR Gigabit Router WL-306, which should be a decent router so I'm guessing there must be something wrong with my configuration. Does any of you know what might cause this? Thanks
