  • AWS VPC ELB vs. Custom Load Balancing

    So I'm wondering if this is a good idea. I have a Amazon AWS VPC setup with a public and private subnets. So I all ready get the Internet Gateway and NAT. I was going to setup all my web servers (Apache2 isntances) and DB servers in the private subnet and use a Load Balancer/Reverse Proxy to pick up requests and send them into the private subnets cluster of servers. My question then, is Amazons ELB's a good use for these, or is it better to setup my own custom instance to handle the public requests and run them through the NAT using nginx or pound? I like the second option just for the sake of having a instance I can log into and check. As well as taking advantage of caching and fail2ban ddos prevention, as well as possibly using fail safes to redirect traffic. But I have no experience with their ELB's, so I thought I'd ask your opinions. Also, if you guys have an opinion on this as well, would using the second option allow me to only have 1 public IP address and be able to route SSH connections through port numbers to respective instances?     I have my js files which I have uploaded into the Amazon S3 and linked it with the Cloudfront. I got a url something like this : dxxxxxxxx.cloudfront.net But opening that url in my browser ( I'm getting an error ) : <Error> <Code>AccessDenied</Code> <Message>Access Denied</Message> <RequestId>xxxxxx</RequestId> <HostId> xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx </HostId> </Error> But what I want actually is to use the url and add them to my webpage.   • ASP.NET and Winforms: What PDF reporting tools are out there and recommended?

    I have ActiveReports for .Net which is a great tool, however the version I have is not going to support Visual Studio 2010. Active Reports quite pricey, so just wondering if there are any better alternatives out there at a competitive price or even open source, before I consider upgrading. I am looking for a reporting tool specifically, that has a designer and is programmable etc, not looking for something that can just produce PDF, eg iTextSharp etc. Output will primarily be PDF for web and windows applications. Using various databases, SQL Server, SQL Server Express, Azure and SQLite, so not sure SQL Server reporting services will work for all these cases. All coments appreciated.

    I have created Hosted Zone with 2 IP addresses of Gluster Cluster, both IP are returned by dig. After mounting Gluster, I cannot ls mount point as it takes long time. mount shows me it's mounted, but df doesn't. Finally, I have this: ls: cannot access /mnt/storage: Transport endpoint is not connected. But if I mount it with the one of the IP, no problem - volume contents is accessible OS: Ubuntu 11.10 GlusterFS: 3.2.6 Log: http://pastie.org/private/2jgp4h1hnqgzych3djtg I have can telnet storage from client - ports are open.

    I have installed the Office 2010 available on MSDN, but there is no proofing tools kit available there yet. Still I see various sources where I can download this kit when I search for it on Google. Is the Proofing Tools Kit available yet or not? Are these sources I see on Google legitimate ones or should I stay away from them? Or are they also available from Microsoft directly somewhere I haven't looked yet? 2010-07-28 Bump: Has anything come out now? I found something called a language pack on MSDN, but the installation looked pretty much the same as the original... not quite sure what that pack did...

  • How do I Install Intermediate Certificates (in AWS)?

    I have installed private key (pem encoded) and public key certificate (pem encoded) on Amazon Load Balancer. However, when I check the SSL with site test tool, I get the following error: Error while checking the SSL Certificate!! Unable to get the local issuer of the certificate. The issuer of a locally looked up certificate could not be found. Normally this indicates that not all intermediate certificates are installed on the server. I converted crt file to pem using these commands from this tutorial: openssl x509 -in input.crt -out input.der -outform DER openssl x509 -in input.der -inform DER -out output.pem -outform PEM During setup of Amazon Load Balancer, the only option I left out was certificate chain. (pem encoded) However, this was optional. Could this be cause of my issue? And if so; How do I create certificate chain? UPDATE If you make request to VeriSign they will give you a certificate chain. This chain includes public crt, intermediate crt and root crt. Make sure to remove the public crt from your certificate chain (which is the top most certificate) before adding it to your certification chain box of your Amazon Load Balancer. If you are making HTTPS requests from an Android app, then above instruction may not work for older Android OS such as 2.1 and 2.2. To make it work on older Android OS: go here click on "retail ssl" tab and then click on "secure site" "CA Bundle for Apache Server" copy and past these intermediate certs into certificate chain box. just incase if you have not found it here is the direct link. If you are using geo trust certificates then the solution is much the same for Android devices, however, you need to copy and paste their intermediate certs for Android.

    Does anyone know of a tool like PowerArchitect or SquirrelSQL or maybe eclipse plugin that lets you also generate jpa/sql queries? Imagine you choosing your database, or your entity beans, and the modeling would reverse engineer your database/entity model, so that you could visually just choose the columns you wanted to select, and it would generate jpa or sql queries for you. For instance choosing A.b and X.y would generate something like this: select a.b, x.y from A a, X x join ......

    What is the preferred way to configure Amazon Security Groups to achieve a multi-tier architecture? Each of my instances has its own Security Group, which I only want to use for rules specific to an instance. I'd like to keep any rules which apply to multiple instances in a separate Security Group, which can then be assigned to instance Security Groups as necessary. As an example, I've setup a group called "admin", which allows administrative access from my IP. I added the "admin" group as the source to each of my instance security groups. However, I still can't access the instances from my IP without adding the rules directly to the instance's group. Am I missing something? Although it seems a multi-tier security architecture should be possible, it doesn't seem to be working.

  • Safe to Use an Amazon EBS Volume While Snapshot in Progress?

    Is it safe to use an EBS volumne while a snapshot is being created? I've currently got a 100Gb EBS volume mounted. I am in the process of snapshotting it. Goodness it's slow!! It's going to end up taking more than 45 minutes to snapshot. My question : Is the EBS volume already copied and just being saved somewhere? Or, is the snapshot actively copying from my mounted volume right now? Basically, if I start using it before the snapshot completes, am I hosed? I just can't believe it takes this long to copy. There really isn't even 100GB in use. It's more like 25Gb.

Can save the document created and edited on my own/ custom server addr. (Which api can support this???   • HP ProBook 4540s - Can't find HP Protect Tools to activate fingerprint reader

    I got an HP ProBook 4540s in December--When I first got it, every time I booted up, there was a rather large icon, almost like a Windows 7 gadget, to access HP Protect Tools, but I had too much going on to mess with it right away and kept clicking on something like "remind me next time I log on" and determined to get acquainted with it after the holidays--But at some point in time, that icon went away and now I can't locate it at all-- I'd like to try, and probably use, the fingerprint reader and explore whatever else is among the Protect Tools, but now I can't find them or any folder or .exe to acceess them-- Can anyone help me find them?-- Thanks so much

  • Suddenly getting lock timeouts with MySQL

    We've got a web app hosted on Amazon Web services. Our database is a multi-az RDS MySQL server running 5.1.57 and 3-4 app servers talk to it. Today, we started seeing a lot of errors along the lines of "Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction" - almost 1% of POST requests are seeing this. There have been no modifications to the code running on the site. There have been no schema changes. We haven't had a big spike in traffic. I've been looking at the processes running, and none seem out of control. I tried scaling our RDS instance from a small to a large, with no effect. Two days ago, Amazon had some outages. As part of the recovery from that, our RDS server, and our app servers ended up in different availability zones, but all within the same region. But yesterday, everything was fine so I'm not convinced that's related. The lock timeouts are in different types of requests and occur in different InnoDB tables. I have noticed the number of open connections jumped when we started seeing problems, but they may be a symptom and not a cause. What are my next steps in debugging this?

    I'm very new to Nagios. I'm trying to send email alerts. But that doesn't seem to be working. But in my log of nagios I can see this : SERVICE ALERT: Appserver;Tmp directory;CRITICAL;HARD;1; Where host notifications are generated via email, only service alerts are not working. And when I look at sendEmail log I can see this : Sep 14 12:38:39 x.x.x.x. sendEmail[23005]: ERROR => You must specify a 'from' field! Try --help.     I am trying to make a windows 2008 AMI that is a nice clean 64bit starter pack (IIS, SQL express, ASP.NET MVC, etc...) I would like to make it a public AMI when its done. There in lies the problem. I can make an AMI from my image no problem. But I can't seen to get new instances to generate their own passwords.. The results are that I have a new instance that works great with my password. So what is the process of making my EBS backed Instances convert into an AMI that will auto-generate its password and do all the other setup steps that amazon wants to go thru when a new instance starts up?   • How do I login once I promote my Windows Server 2012 to domain controller in my Amazon VPC?

    I am following this guide: http://d36cz9buwru1tt.cloudfront.net/pdf/EC2_AD_How_to.pdf to setup my domain controller. I get AD installed correctly, but when I do the promotion to DC, the server restarts and when I try to access it, I am unable to login using any of the local system accounts. I even created my own separate user account, but that did not help. I made sure to disable the amazon settings for renaming the machine, the machine has a static ip and has been renamed.

  • Implementation of APIs on diferent platforms

    OK, this is basicly just about any non-default OS API running on all different OS. But for my example let´s consider platform Windows, API SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer). Actually this question came to my mind when I was reading about SDL. Originally, I thought that on Windows (and basicly any other OS) you must use OS API to make certain actions, like wrtiting to screen, creating window and so on, becouse that API knows what kernel calls and system subroutines calls it has to do. But when I read about SDL, I surprised me, becouse, you cannot make computer to do anything more than OS can, since you cannot acess HW directly, only thru OS API, from Console allocation to DirectX. So, my question actually is, how does this not-default-OS APIs work? Do they use (wrap) original system API (like MFC wraps win32 api)? Or, do they actually have direct acess to Windows kernel? Or is there any third, way in between? Thanks.
