  A smart phone in your pocket is great for on the go news, web browsing, and—of course—mobile gaming. It’s also fantastic for comparison shopping. Today we take a look at four Android scanners and price comparison engines. It’s quite a neat time to be a consumer. Historically if you wanted to do serious price comparisons you had to haul yourself around town, gather flyers from the newspapers, and otherwise invest way too much energy into potential savings that might not even break into double digits. Now you can comparison shop with an ease that borders on magic: by simply pulling out your smart phone and scanning the barcode or typing in the name of the item you wish to compare. Today we’re taking a look at some of the more popular and powerful barcode scanners and price comparison engines available for the Android platform. Before we get to that, a word on our methodology. To test the barcode scanners and the resulting search results we wandered around and rounded up some relatively random items from around the How-To Geek offices. This included a children’s graphic novel, a Wii game, a board game, a pack of razors, a box of tea, and a bottle of nail polish. It’s a decent spread of consumer items that covers several genres. For each application we scanned all the items, looked for the best price at the time, and noted any other relevant benefits of using one scanner over another. It’s worth noting that our primary focus was on the speed and ease of use. You may find that certain scanners have specific features that best suit your needs. What we focused on was how fast you could scan, compare prices, and purchase items if you desired. • How to represent an agile project to people focused on waterfall [closed]

  Our team has been asked to represent our development efforts in a project plan. No one is unhappy with our work or questioning our ability to deliver, we are just participating in an IT cattle call for project plans. Trouble is we are an agile team and haven't thought about our work in terms of a formal project plan. While we have a general idea of what we are working on next we aren't 100% sure until we plan an iteration. Until now our team has largely operated in a vacuum and has not been required to present our methodology or metrics to outside parties. We follow most of the practices espoused in Extreme Programming. We hold quarterly planning meetings to have a general idea of the stories we are going to work on for a quarter. That said, our stories are documented on 3x5 cards and are only estimated at the beginning of the iteration in which they are going to be worked. After estimation we document the story in Team Foundation Sever. During an iteration, we attach code to stories and mark stories as completed once finished. From this data we are able to generate burn down and velocity charts. Most importantly we know our average velocity for an iteration keeping us from biting off more than we can chew. I am not looking to modify the way we do development but want to present our development activities in a report that someone only familiar with waterfall will understand. • How to build Visual Studio Setup projects (.vdproj) with TFS 2010 Build ?

  Out of the box, Team Foundation Server 2010 Build does not support building of setup projects (.vdproj). Although, you can modify DefaultTemplate.xaml or create your own in order to achieve this. I had to try bunch of different blog post's and finally got it working with a mixture of all those posts.   Since you don’t have to go through this pain again, I have uploaded the Template which you can use right away : https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=65B2671F6B93CDE9!310 Download and CheckIn this template into your source control. Modify your Build Definition to use this template. Unless you have CheckedIn the template, it wont show up in the template selection section in the process task of build definition. In your Visual Studio Solution Configuration Manager, make sure you specify to build the setup project also. You might get this warning in your build result: “The project file “*.vdproj” is not support by MSBuild and cannot be build. Hope it helps.   Here is the setup: VirtualBox 4.1.20 (which the Help window describes as 4.1.12_Ubuntu) Extension Pack 4.1.20 (for USB support) Windows 7 Home Premium as a guest operating system on VirtualBox Ubuntu 12.04 with dist-upgrade's to September 2012 as the host operating system. Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b, which I believe is a GDI printer, connected via USB. The problem is that often print jobs will sit in the print queue and nothing comes out of the printer. The printer status for the first item in the queue will be Printing even though nothing happens. Then upon rebooting Windows, the print jobs get printed, seemingly simultaneous to the rebooting process; that is as Windows reloads. One way to avoid this problem is to reboot Windows with the printer cable attached, and then submit the print jobs. The print jobs get printed in a timely manner. Perhaps VirtualBox has a problem with USB being plug-n-play and hot pluggable. It's not convenient to have the printer plugged in when Windows boots because: One, this is a laptop, and Two, I may be boot Windows for a purpose other than printing and not anticipate needing to print. Are there any recommendable fixes for this problem?

• Oracle Java Embedded Client 1.1 Released

  Yesterday an update release of Oracle Java Embedded Client (OJEC) 1.1 quietly slipped out door for general availability. Until last year it was pretty difficult to get your hands on either a Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) for small devices or a Connected Device Configuration (CDC) for medium devices java implementation without a substantial initial commitment. But with the the release of OJWC (CLDC) and OJEC (CDC) last year that has changed. OJEC 1.1 is a binary distribution designed for installation on medium configurations which is a mid range processor requiring a  slow startup time, seamless upgrades, in a cost sensitive hardware environment  anywhere from 3.5mb to 8 mb. There are headless as well as headed versions available. It is intended for devices, such as Blu-­-ray Disc players, set-­-top boxes, residential gateways,VOIP phones, and similar. From a software point of view, OJEC is the Java runtime platform implementation of Connected Device Configuration (CDC v1.1, JSR-­-218), Foundation Profile (FP v1.1, JSR-­-219), and Personal Basis Profile (PBP v1.1, JSR-­-217)  and includes optional packages RMI (JSR 66), JDBC (JSR 169) and XML API for Java ME (JSR 280), and Java TV (JSR-­-927). New to this release is support for the XML API (JSR 280) and a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements, including an improved Just-in-Time (JIT) compilation for the x86 chipset architecture. The platforms supported include ArmV5, ArmV6/ArmV7, MIPS 32 74K, and X86 in headless mode. For embedded developers there are number of advantages to using Java and if you have shied away from the JavaME edition in the past I would encourage you to look into the updated version of OJEC 1.1.

  With the release of Visual Studio 2010 Feature Pack 2, Microsoft included the Coded UI Test framework. With this release it is possible to create automated test with just a few mouse clicks. This is a very powerful feature that all Silverlight developers need to learn.   If you are an Oracle customer, you are probably familiar with Oracle ADF (Application Development Framework). If you are not, ADF is, in a nutshell, a Java EE based framework that simplifies the development of enterprise applications. It is the development framework that was used, among other things, to build Oracle Fusion Applications. Oracle has just released ADF Essentials, a free to develop and deploy version of Oracle ADF's core technologies. As a good news never come alone, GlassFish 3.1.2 is now a certified container for ADF Essentials! ADF Essentials leverage core ADF features and includes: Oracle ADF Faces - a set of more than 150 JSF 2.0 rich components that simplify the creation of rich Web user interfaces (charting, data vizualization, advanced tables, drag and drop, touch gesture support, extensive windowing capabilities, etc.) Oracle ADF Controller - an extension of the JSF controller that helps build reusable process flows and provides the ability to create dynamic regions within Web pages. Oracle ADF Binding - an XML-based, meta-data abstraction layer to connect user interfaces to business services. Oracle ADF Business Components – a declaratively-configured layer that simplifies developing business services against relational databases by providing reusable components that implement common design patterns. • Difficulty Mounting Volumes on a Partitioned External HD

  I'm having a great deal of difficulty with an external hard drive. I'm currently running a dual boot system (XP Service Pack 3 and Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwahl) on a Dell Inspiron B120. I'm trying to set up a new 80 GB Hitachi external HD. Using GParted, I formatted the drive and set up the partitions. The partitioning scheme is as follows 10GB NTFS Primary, 2GB Linux-Swap Primary, 50GB FAT32 Primary, 12GB Unallocated. After applying those changes, I went into Disk Utility and the HD appears along with the correct partitions. When I try to mount the volumes for partitions 1 and 3, I get a pop-up stating: Error Mounting Volume An error occurred while performing an operation on "Home" (Partition 3 of HTS548080m9AT00): The daemon is being inhibited. When I try to to check the filesystem I get a pop-up stating: Error Checking filesystem on volume An error occurred while performing an operation on "Home" (Partition 3 of HTS548080m9AT00): The daemon is being inhibited. Throughout the time that I'm attempting to troubleshoot the problem, the external drive light is on and blinking. With my frustration hitting a boiling point, I try to shut down the drive and remove it so that I can plug in a different external HD that works PERFECTLY. However, when I try to shut down and safely remove the drive, I get a pop-up stating: Error Detaching Drive An error occurred while performing an operation on "80GB Hard Disk" (HTS548080m9AT00): The daemon is being inhibited. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm a newbie and not that skilled with terminal commands, so please dumb it down for me if you request specific command output.

• Payroll Customers Must Apply Mandatory Patches to Maintain Your Supportability

  The HRMS Suite of products has minimum required Rollup Patch (RUP) levels as well as additional mandatory patches that our customers must apply to ensure they are in compliance for support.  Without these patches, customers risk not being able to apply any fixes for issues they encounter as these RUPs and mandatory patches are the minimum patch level expected by Oracle Support and Oracle Development.  Core Payroll and International Payroll customers must apply the yearly Rollup Patch within 12 months of its issue. Legislative Payroll customers have additional requirements for the Rollup Patch, as the RUP generally is a pre-requisite for the next Year End/Fourth Quarter/Year Begin payroll processing supported by Oracle. • Oracle SOA Suite on Virtual Box

  Recently I have started my journey Oracle SOA Suite and the first big hurdle everyone warned me off is setting up Oracle SOA Suite environment in our personal machine for learning. My laziness pushed me to search for much easier way than regular all download, configuration stuff and bang..! I found in the solution oracle site itself. Oracle SOA Suite on Virtual Box. For those who are not aware of Virtual Box, it’s a virtualization software which enables u to install multiple operating systems on a virtual hard drive which in turn managed by Virtual Box. In short pack ur Operating System, Software, Files everything into a VM and carry it wherever u go. Coming to Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle is offering a prebuilt VM for download which u can mount on ur Virtual box and that all you need. Here is the link for Virtual Box image of Oracle SOA Suite. Virtual Box can be downloaded here It’s a huge download. I’m yet to try it myself. Will get back to my writer again once I’m done.

• Experiences with Ubuntu One?

  I'm currently testing several backup/sync services: Dropbox, SpiderOak and Ubuntu One. Of them, Dropbox is the winner hands down; SpiderOak is nice too, but a bit more intrusive and unpredictable (sometimes is slow in syncing some files, or doesn't sync them at all). Ubuntu One has promise, but I've used it much less than the other two. I'm thinking about buying a "20 pack" and using Ubuntu One as my only synchronization software. It's the cheapest of them all (3$/month vs 10$ in Dropbox and SpiderOak), and 20GB of space is enough for me. My intention is to sync most of my $HOME folder. All the computers I'll connect will have Ubuntu installed, so not being multiplatform doesn't really matter to me. If its performance is as good as Dropbox's, I'm sold. But I'd like to gauge some experiences here first. Is anyone using it seriously? I.e., to sync a lot of files that change often (like the aforementioned $HOME folder, program sources, or something alike). What have been your experiences? Thanks in advance.
