  Hello, Let say I have a List< T > abc = new List< T >; inside a class public class MyClass<T>//.... Later, when I initialize the class the T because MyTypeObject1. So I have a generic list of List< MyTypeObject1 >. I would like to know, what type of object the list of my class contain. Example, the list called abc contain what type of object? I cannot do abc[0].GetType(); because the list might contain 0 element. How can I do it?

Basically if you set the StringValue it will perform some conversion into type T public class MyClass<T> { public string StringValue {get;set;} public T Value {get;set;} } I cannot remember the article that i was reading, or the name of the class i was reading about.   My idea is to create some generic classes for Insert/Update/Select via a C# (3.5) Winforms app talking with a MySQL database via MySQL .NET Connector 6.2.2. For example: public void Insert(string strSQL) { if (this.OpenConnection() == true) { MySqlCommand cmd = new MySqlCommand(strSQL, connection); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); this.CloseConnection(); } } Then from anywhere in the program I can run a query with/without user input by just passing a SQL query string. Reading around on SO is starting to give me the indication that this may lead to SQL injection attacks (for any user-input values). Is there anyway of scrubbing the inputted strSQL or do I need to go and create individual parameterized queries in every method that needs to do a database function?

• Casting to generic type in Java doesn't raise ClassCastException?

  I have come across a strange behavior of Java that seems like a bug. Is it? Casting an Object to a generic type (say, K) does not throw a ClassCastException even if the object is not an instance of K. • How do I improve the efficiency of the queries executed by this generic Linq-to-SQL data access clas

  Hi all, I have a class which provides generic access to LINQ to SQL entities, for example: class LinqProvider<T> //where T is a L2S entity class { DataContext context; public virtual IEnumerable<T> GetAll() { return context.GetTable<T>(); } public virtual T Single(Func<T, bool> condition) { return context.GetTable<T>().SingleOrDefault(condition); } } From the front end, both of these methods appear to work as you would expect. However, when I run a trace in SQL profiler, the Single method is executing what amounts to a SELECT * FROM [Table], and then returning the single entity that meets the given condition. Obviously this is inefficient, and is being caused by GetTable() returning all rows. My question is, how do I get the query executed by the Single() method to take the form SELECT * FROM [Table] WHERE [condition], rather than selecting all rows then filtering out all but one? Is it possible in this context? Any help appreciated, Lee

  In my project I have a class, NewsItem. Instances of NewsItem act like a wrapper. They can be associated with either an ArtWork instance, or an Announcement instance. • Insert into a generic dictionary with possibility of duplicate keys?

  Is there any reason to favor one of these approaches over the other when inserting into a generic dictionary with the possibility of a key conflict? I'm building an in-memory version of a static collection so in the case of a conflict it doesn't matter whether the old or new value is used. If Not mySettings.ContainsKey(key) Then mySettings.Add(key, Value) End If Versus mySettings(key) = Value And then of course there is this, which is obviously not the right approach: Try mySettings.Add(key, Value) Catch End Try Clearly the big difference here is that the first and second approaches actually do different things, but in my case it doesn't matter. It seems that the second approach is cleaner, but I'm curious if any of you .net gurus have any deeper insight. Thanks!

• Best way to test if a generic type is a string? (c#)

  I have a generic class that should allow any type, primitive or otherwise. The only problem with this is using default(T). When you call default on a value type or a string, it initializes it to a reasonable value (such as empty string). When you call default(T) on an object, it returns null. For various reasons we need to ensure that if it is not a primitive type, then we will have a default instance of the type, not null. Here is attempt 1: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType) { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } Problem - string is not a value type, but it does not have a parameterless constructor. So, the current solution is: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType || typeof(T).FullName == "System.String") { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } But this feels like a kludge. Is there a nicer way to handle the string case?

  For clarity I am using C# 3.5/Asp.Net MVC 2 Here is what I have done: I wanted the ability to add/remove functionality to an object at run-time. So I simply added a generic object dictionary to my class like this: public Dictionary<int, object> Components { get; set; } Then I can add/remove any kind of .Net object into this dictionary at run-time. To insert an object I do something like this: var tag = new Tag(); myObject.Components.Add((int)Types.Components.Tag, tag); Then to retrieve I just do this: if(myObject.Components.ContainsKey((int)Types.Components.Tag)) { var tag = myObject.Components[(int)Types.Components.Tag] as Tag; if(tag != null) { //do stuff } } Somehow I feel sneaky doing this. It works okay, but I am wondering what you guys think about it as a best practice. Thanks for your input, Daniel

  Hi all, I'm interested in understanding the underlying implementation details of generic collections in .NET. What I have in mind are details such as how the collections are stored, how each member of a collection is accessed by the CLR, etc. For collections that are analogous to traditional data structures, such as LinkedList and Dictionary, I think I have an understanding of what's going on underneath. However, I'm not as certain about collections like List (how is set up such that it is both indexable and expandable?) and SortedList, so any leads as to what I could look up to learn more about them would be greatly appreciated.

  I am trying to convert the value of the generic type parameter T value into integer after making sure that T is in fact integer: public class Test { void DoSomething<T>(T value) { var type = typeof(T); if (type == typeof(int)) { int x = (int)value; // Error 167 Cannot convert type 'T' to 'int' int y = (int)(object)value; // works though boxing and unboxing } } } Although it works through boxing and unboxing, this is an additional performance overhead and i was wandering if there's a way to do it directly. Surely if you passed in a double, any sort of function implementation code which casts an object to an Integer would not be able to work unless the cast 'Integer' was specifically used? I have a function like: public static void increment(Object o){ Integer one = (Integer)o; system.out.println(one++); } I cant see how this could be made generic for a double? I tried public static <E> void increment(E obj){ E one = (E)o; system.out.println(one++); } but it didn't like it?

  Now that I have the Build failing because of a genuine bug and not just because of a test framework failure, lets see if we can trace through to finding why the first test in our new application failed. Lets look at the build and see if we can see why there is a red cross on it. First, lets open that build list. On Team Explorer Expand your Team Project Collection | Team Project and then Builds. Double click the offending build. Figure: Opening the Build list is a key way to see what the current state of your software is.   Figure: A test is failing, but we can now view the Test Results to find the problem      Figure: You can quite clearly see that the test has failed with “The device is not ready”. To me the “The Device is not ready” smacks of a System.IO exception, but it passed on my local computer, so why not on the build server? What assumptions mistakes could the developer have made to make this look OK: That every install would be to “C:\Program Files\SSW SQL Deploy” That every computer would have a “D:\\” That checking in code at 6pm because the had to go home was a good idea. lets solve each of these problems: We are in a web service… lets store data within the web root. So we can call “Server.MapPath(“~/App_Data/SSW SQL Deploy\SampleData”) instead. Never reference an explicit path. If you need some storage for your application use IsolatedStorage. Shelve your code instead. What else could have been done? Code review before check-in – The developer should have shelved their code and asked another dev to look at it. Use Defensive programming – Make sure that any code that has the possibility of failing has checks. Any more options? Let me know and I will add them. What do we do? The correct things to do is to add a Bug to the backlog, but as this is probably going to be fixed in sprint, I will add it directly to the sprint backlog. Right click on the failing test Select “Create Work Item | Bug” Figure: Create an associated bug to add to the backlog. Set the values for the Bug making sure that it goes into the right sprint and Area. Make your steps to reproduce as explicit as possible, but “See test” is valid under these circumstances.   Figure: Add it to the correct Area and set the Iteration to the Area name or the Sprint if you think it will be fixed in Sprint and make sure you bring it up at the next Scrum Meeting. • When I try to click and launch some of the links set to open in new window, it is being treated as a pop-up window [migrated]

  For the past few days, we are facing issue with the chrome browser behavior. This is related to opening links set to open in new tab/window. The details are as follow: I have a collection of links and each link points to different resource to be opened in a new tab/window. The code is as follow: <a class="cssClass" rid="1114931" href="http://www.domain.com/resources/abc.html" title="Link1" tabindex="4">Link 1</a> And there are few checks/filters over accessing the resources which have been implemented as onClick handler over the links. In case any of the validations fails, the onClick handler returns false and the default behavior of the link does not happens i.e. links does not get open. One of such (last) checks includes AJAX call in sync mode.   The Apache instalation of MacOSX is running Ok. I have tried to create a VirtualHost called test.local, but as soon as I uncomment from /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf the line Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf , and try to access test.local virtualhost I get an error "You don't have permission to access / on this server". The VirtualHost configuration in /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf is: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName test.local DocumentRoot "/Users/username/Sites/Test/public" <Directory "/Users/username/Sites/Test/public"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> I have also include the VirtualHost in hosts file: 127.0.0.1 test.local

• Why do I have man pages of commands that don't exist?

  What is panel-test-applets for?? I don't know. But if I want to know I type: $ whatis panel-test-applets The answer is: panel-test-applets (1) - display installed applets I have the man page too, and I can read it: $ man panel-test-applets But there is no program with that name. Maybe the command is not very useful, but is its man page more useful? Does someone know how to install that program or what is its man page for when you cannot execute the program? I can't even execute the command: $ panel-test-applets nor $ panel-test-applets --help which is the only thing its man page talks about!!

• How to make Unit Tests to make sure stored procedure is deleting row from the database?

  I'm new to unit testing and I need some help with the following. I have created a small project to help me learn how to make Unit Tests. The functionality for one of the forms in my application deletes a user from the User table (and other rows in mapping tables). Currently, the unit test I have created to test this sets up the required objects and then calls the business rules method (passing in the user id) which calls the data access method to execute the stored procedure that deletes the rows in the tables. Is this the correct method to test whether something is being deleted successfully? Should the unit test / setup method first insert some test data which the unit test then deletes?
