• Lost WiFi after 12.10 upgrade

  I received my new Dell Vostro 2420 last week, and just got around to upgrading from 11.10 to 12.10. Unfortunately, like many others (after researching the issue), I no longer have WiFi. I have tried every sudo command given that worked for others, and still can't get my wireless to function. I am new to Linux, so any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance! Edit: I can connect via ethernet, just not via wifi.   Just a day ago, I was doing small attempting to connect to my local SQL Server using IP 127.0.0.1. The IP is of my local machine and SQL Server is installed on the local box as well. However, whenever I try to connect to the server it gave me following strange error. Cannot connect to 127.0.0.1. Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) The reason was indeed strange as I was trying to connect from local box to local box and it said my login was from an untrusted domain. As my system is not part of any domain, this was really confusing to me. Another thing was that I have been always able to connect always using 127.0.0.1 to SQL Server and this was a bit strange to me. I started to think what did I change since it  last time I connected to SQL Server. Suddenly I remembered that I had modified my computer’s host file for some other purpose. Solution: I opened my host file and immediately added entry like 127.0.0.1 localhost. Once I added it I was able to reconnect to SQL Server as usual. The location of the host file is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. You will find file with the name hosts in it, make sure to open it with notepad. If you are part of a domain and your organization is using active directory, make sure that your account is added properly to active directory as well have proper security permissions to execute the task.   I have a custom made Framework (written in PHP). It all works very good, but i have some doubts about a certain thing. Right now when a user call this url for example: http://host.com/user/edit/12 Which would resolve to: user = userController edit = editAction() in userController 12 = treated as a param But suppose the controller 'userController' doesn't exist. Then i could throw a 404. But on the other hand, the url could also be used as params for the indexController (which is the default controller). So in that case: controller = indexController user = could be an action in indexController, otherwise treated as a param edit = treated as a param 12 = treated as a param That is actually how it works right now in my framework. So basically, i never throw a 404. I could ofcourse say that only params can be given if the controller name is explicitly named in the URL. So if i want the above url: http://host.com/user/edit/12 To be invoked by the indexController, in the indexAction. Then i specifically have to tell what controller and action it uses in the URL. So the URL should become: http://host.com/index/index/user/edit/12 index = indexController index (2nd one) = the action method user = treated as a param edit = treated as a param 12 = treated as a param That way, when a controller doesn't exist, i don't reroute everything as a param to the index controller and simply throw a 404 error. Now my question is, which one is more preffered? Should i allow both options to be configurable in a config file? Or should i always use one of them. Simply because that's the only and best way to do it?

• High quality/performance shared hosting (in northern Europe)

  I work as a web developer on almost all levels. However, my typical customer is a 1-5 guys running some sort of consulting business. They have (or want) a web page with some kind of CMS so the can perform most (or all) editing themselves. I normally opt for Concrete5 as my default CMS because it's the most user friendly (and free) CMS I have found. My good recurring customers I host on my own server as a service, but I need a good host for the customers where I want to deliver a product and not be responsible for whatever may happen in the future. However, I still struggle with hosting! Experience shows that the typical ~1$ shared hosting is waaay to slow to run concrete5 smoothly, and a VPS is out of the question because I don't want to maintain it. So, where can I find as fast (from northern Europe), reliable, shared host where I can put a site and don't have to worry about the server going down or being unmaintained. I expect this should cost around $10-$20 but I'm open to all kinds of suggestions because different customers have different budgets.

• Connected to wireless, but no internet access

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04 a week ago wireless internet had been working fine. It stopped working yesterday, however, and I'm at a loss for what to do even after scouring replies to similar posted problems. I have tried using Google's public DNS and turning off proxy settings on Firefox. I have used nm-tool and lshw to make sure my wireless device and driver are connected. They offer: Roughly the same server spec Ticketing system support Managed daily backups Virtual firewall (but with a limit of 10 IP addresses allowed through at any one time) Now, this managed hosting is at extra expense - somewhere in the region of $500 per month, and the limit on the number of IP addresses they'll manage on the firewall is also a real pain. My thinking is it would be better and cheaper to Stay with the same host since the dedicated box is fine Get an Amazon AWS account and use their server to manage backups; there are a number of good tools that can be used to automate the process Configure iptables so that I have complete control of the firewall I want to know Is a managed virtual firewall likely to be more secure than me configuring iptables? Whether, in your opinion, it's best to let someone else take care of backups? If, from your experience, there's anything else i'm missing that warrants using managed hosting over a DIY service? I think there is some reluctance to not having managed hosting since a managed host in effect takes responsibility for your server, whereas any hardware or security issues with a server that we manage would mean we are forced to hold our hands up when a client site goes down. That said, I personally don't think a managed host does that much in the day to day running of your server (backups are automatic, OS updates are carried out with ease, etc.).

• Architecture of a "website generator" web application

  What is the most maintainable and efficient way to architect a web application who's purpose is to host and generate websites which can be customized to a certain degree? There are a lot of these style of applications in the wild that generate all kinds of sites, from sites that host World of Warcraft guilds like guildlaunch to other sites like my wedding for wedding site hosting. My question is, what is the basic architecture that these sites operate on? I imagine there are two ways of thinking about this. A central set of code that all sites on the host run against, and it acts differently based on which site was visited. In this manner, when the base code is updated all sites are updated simultaneously. Or, the code for an individual site exists in a silo, and is simply replicated to a new directory each time a site is created. When an update needs to be applied, the code is pushed out to each site silo. In my case, I am working in PHP with the CodeIgniter framework, however the answer need not be limited to this case. Which method (if any) creates a more maintainable and efficient architecture to manage this style of web application?

• How do I bridge my wireless to my wired connection?

  I want to bridge the wireless connection with the wired connection. The wireless is the host and the wired is the client, so to speak. Internet sharing (inet <--> wifi <--> ethernet) I tried to bridge my ethernet connection by going to network manager edit connections wired edit IPv4 settings shared to other computers Screenshots However, it seems to automatically disconnect half a second after it says "connection established"! edit 2 got the network manager logs, it seems the address is in use. I don't have time to bother with a dozen command line tricks, unless is copy & pasting a shell script... so please suggest ways that use GUIs and/or won't leave my computer in a confused state (e.g. disabling network manager, manually connecting to a WPA network, installing brutils, etc.). edit: one idea that would work, if it's possible -- is there a way to share connections via SSH and SOCKS5? I'd need to do this at a system-wide level though; I only know how to do it through the browser now. Then, I could run ifconfig eth0 192.168.4.1 on the computer sharing the inet, and ifconfig eth0 192.168.4.2 on the computer I'm trying to share with; I know this does work for host-to-host transfers. edit 3 If I run sudo killall dnsmasq, then nothing is using the 10.42.43.1 address the network manager sharing wants to use. But now it just takes longer to die, with error "NetworkManager[5935]: dnsmasq died with signal 9" [ http://pastebin.com/4FNtpugi ]. • Setting up a LAMP VM server for Development and Testing?

  Info: I would like to set up a VM server on my local computer which will serve pages in the exact same way as my current hosting (but only to me on my local computer). I currently pay a big web hosting company to host my website & web store and they are doing a great job, but I would like to be able to work on my Web site and its corresponding MySQL DB, HTML, and PHP code without being at risk of messing something completely up on the live servers. My current plan of action: Set up a VM webserver with Debian, MySQL, PHP, Apache. Copy web store (PHP/HTML) code to VM server. Copy my current MySQL databases from my hosting provider and install on VM server. Modify and test new features on VM server. Upload MySQL DB and HTML/PHP code back to web host's server where it should work as before but with new modifications. Questions: Now I'm pretty sure I have steps one and two down correctly but I can't for the life of me figure out how to proceed next, so here are my questions. I have my /etc/host file set up so www.MySite.test redirects to the IP address of the local VM webserver. Once I import my PHP/HTML files and MySQL file whats the best way to navigate around the fact that all of my files and DBs will reference www.MySite.com. I can export my MySQL dbs but do I also have to export my MySQL users and passwords to access those db or are those coded into my html/php code?

• No attachable databases were found on the SQL Server

  I'm fumbling my way through a basic installation of TFS 2010... I see that the TFS_Configuration and Tfs_DefaultCollection databases were successfully created on my local machine. The installation seemed to go smoothly, but it looks like I need to configure a Team Project Collect before I can start using it. Yet, the wizard seems unable to locate the appropriate database that I expected should have been created during the setup process. The server name defaulted properly to the name of the local machine. Did I miss a step somewhere?

  Everytime I try to set a debug point in Javascript, eietehr while in Design mode or while runniong, I get the error: trying to set a breakpoint in javascript: this is not a valid location for a breakpoint When I go to VS2010's Options screen under Debugging Just In Time, I see that Managed, Native & Script are selected, I also placed the line "debugger;" in the first line of a javascript function that is called but the break is never hit. In the Web.Config (although this is probably for compiled code:): <compilation debug="true I'm reliving this problem on a new machine...Can u help? Edit: I left out a huge detail: Google Chrome is my default browser. (I am trying to debug a Chrome-only error.) Must I resort to other debug tools other than VS2010? I am thinking that it should work. Too hopeful, eh?

• Getting a null reference exception exporting a slightly complex rdlc report to excel

  Have an issue in exporting a slightly complex report to excel from an rdlc. Exporting a simple tabular report works fine, but getting a null reference exception with a more complex one. As is usually the case, it works on the server in the development environment, but not in the test environment. The server in the development environment has iis, sql and sql reporting services on it and test only has iis (I didn't set them up). I'm guessing there is something that gets installed with SSRS that is not installed with just the report viewer. The report has several parameters going into it and a few generic lists going in for datasources. Some tables for display as well as a list. Working with the 2005 version. • Crystal Reports - "A string is required here" formula error.

  I have a command line utility that generates one simple crystal report. I recently updated the project from .NET 1.1 to .NET 3.5 using the Visual Studio 2008 migrator and am now getting an error that I had never received before. • WPF touch and slide/drag animation

  I'm trying to create a pretty simple WPF interface, and from what I know this should be mostly possible using pure XAML. What I know I have a pretty basic understanding of WPF so far, however I have a decent grasp on XAML. I know or can work out how to put content in these panels. This isn't the topic of this question. What I don't know I don't know how to animate this interface. I'm not very proficient at binding, however again, that's not the topic of this question. The topic of this question is what would be the best way to animate panels 1-4 (images below) so that they may be dragged (via touch) into view. The number of panels here may be static for the purpose of this question. The panels (1-4) can be stack panels, grids or whatever; their content isnt important. What is important is the container that would contain all 4 panels. The complication in this animation is the other two containers here (Item One/TODO), as they're in the way of a smooth animation. If it makes this question simpler, the touch features can be ignored for now, and a simple button push can slide the containers across. One Two
