• Planning for the Recovery

  As we plan for 2011, there are many positive signs in the global economy, but also some lingering issues. Planning no longer is about extrapolating past performance and adjusting for growth. It is now about constantly testing the temperature of the water, formulating scenarios, assessing risk and assigning probabilities.  So how does one plan for recovery and improve forecast accuracy in such a volatile environment?  Here are some suggestions from a recent article I wrote, which was published in the December Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) newsletter from the AFP (Association of Financial Professionals): Increase the frequency of forecasting Get more line managers involved in the planning and forecasting process Re-consider what's being measured - i.e. key financial and operational metrics Incorporate risk and probability into forecasts Reduce reliance on spreadsheets - leverage packaged EPM applications To learn more about these best practices, check out the FP&A section of the AFP website and register to receive the FP&A newsletter.  AFP recently launched a new topic area focused on the FP&A function and items of interest to this group of finance professionals.  In addition to the FP&A quarterly newsletter, AFP will be publishing articles, running webinars and will have an FP&A track in their annual conference, which is in Boston next November.  Brian Kalish, AFP's Finance Lead, is hoping this initiative creates a valuable networking and information-sharing resource for FP&A professionals. • Tips on combining the right Art Assets with a 2D Skeleton and making it flexible

  I am on my first attempt to build a skeletal animation system for 2D side-scrollers, so I don't really have experience of what may appear in later stages. So i ask advice from anyone that been there and done that! My approach: I built a Tree structure, the root node is like the center-of-mass of the skeleton, allowing to apply global transformations to the skeleton. Then, i make the hierarchy of the bones, so when moving a leg, the foot also moves. (I also make a Joint, which connects two bones, for utility). I load animations to it from a simple key frame lerp, so it does smooth movement. I map the animation hierarchy to the skeleton, or a part of it, to see if the structure is alike, otherwise the animation doesnt start. I think this is pretty much a standard implementation for such a thing, even if i want to convert it to a Rag Doll on the fly.. Now to my question: Imagine a game like prototype, there is a skeleton animation of the main character, which can animate all meshes in the game that are rigged the same way.. That way the character can transform into anything without any extra code. That is pretty much what i want to do for a side-scroller, in theory it sounds easy, but I want to know if that will work well. If the different people will be decently animated when using the same skeleton-animation pair. I can see this working well with a Stickman, but what about actual humans? Will the perspective look right, or i will need to dynamically change the sprites attached to bones? What do you recommend for such a system?

AMR reported on 15 Apr (M.Burkett, A.Reese) in a SCM webcast that 'Penetrating Emerging Markets" was the top priotiy for organizations based on a recent survey. I took this as both adding new consumers to their prospect-list as well as leveraging 'lower cost labor arbitrage". (Read '3 Billion Capitalists") Supply Chain Quarterly reports that India and Brazil received the highest ranking of the logistics markets in developing nations India tops the list of emerging nations that scores the attractiveness of logistics markets to foreign investors. Developed by the UK-based research firm Transport Intelligence, the new  Emerging Market Logistics Index rated 38 developing countries on 3 factors. 1. "Market size and growth attractiveness," considered a country's economic output, projected growth rate, and population size.  2. "Market compatibility," which examined how well-matched a nation was with the services offered by global logistics providers. This includes a country's security levels, market accessibility, foreign direct investment, distribution of wealth and population, and development of its service sector. 3. "Connectedness," which rated the efficiency of customs and border controls, liner shipping connections, and transportation infrastructure. India claimed the top spot due to its market size and growth prospects. • Go Big or Go Home

  For those who don’t know, Oracle sponsors a group called “OWL” – Oracle Women’s Leadership - and the purpose of the group is to create local and global opportunities that support, educate and empower current and future women leaders at Oracle. This week, I had the opportunity to attend the Denver OWL roadshow, and I was really impressed with the quality of speakers and interactions that I experienced. One theme that arose throughout the day was that of “Lean In.” In a nutshell, “Lean In” requires you to take advantage of the opportunities that you’re given. One of my personal mantras is “Go big or go home."  That is, if you’re not willing to give it your all, don’t do it at all. Regardless of how you phrase it, it’s a life lesson that I believe needs to be tossed in our face every so often simply, if for no other reason, to get our attention. You are given a finite amount of time in your life; in your job role; in your interactions with others. Do you make the most of the opportunities given to you every day? Or do you believe that life just happens, and you have to deal with whatever is handed to you? I have a challenge for you. Set aside any concerns or fears you have about something and Lean In. Make the most of an opportunity presented to you…or make your own opportunity! If you start with just one thing, you’ll start building a mindset to make the most of additional opportunities. Not only will you be better for leaning in, but I’m betting that those around you will be better for it as well.

• Cost to licence characters or ships for a game

  I am producing a game pitch document for a university game design class, and I am looking for examples of licencing cost for using characters or ships from other IP holders in a game. For example: cost of using an X-Wing in a game, licencing from Lucas cost of using the Enterprise in a game, licencing from Paramount cost of using the Space Shuttle (if any), licencing from Nasa EDIT The closest information I can find is from an article about Nights of the Old Republic, but isn't nearly specific enough for my needs: What Kotick means by Lucas being the principal beneficiary of the success of The Old Republic is that there are most likely clauses in the license agreement that give percentages, points, or another denomination of revenue out to Lucas and his people just for the Star Wars name, and that amount is presumed to be a great deal of money. Kotick is saying that because the cost of the license is so prohibitive, as he has personally had experience with in his position as CEO of Activision Blizzard, that EA will not be able to be profitable because of the hemorrhaging of money to the licensor. EDIT 2 Another vague source stating that FOX uses a "five-figure rule" (assuming between $10,000 - $99,000) It seems FOX, like most studios, will not license individuals to create new works based upon their products. They will only commission individuals of their choosing if they elect to branch out into expanded product lines related to those licenses. Alternately, they are open to making the licencing available to large corporations with access to global markets, but only if those corporations agree to what Ms Friedman called a "five-figure guarantee". Presumably this means that the corporation seeking the licensing must agree to pay a 5-figure sum for that license, and be confident that their product will sell enough volume to recoup that fee, and to produce sufficient profits to make the acquisition worth their while. • Questions about XNA

  I've read tons of different threads about XNA, but I still have some questions. First of all: I have 2 years of experience programming and C# is my main language, so XNA would fit perfectly for me, but I have some concerns. People mentioned that C# has a performance loss compared to C++. Is this true? XNA only supports DirectX 9. I found the ANX framework which is pretty similar to XNA but it is capable of DirectX 11. Would this be a good alternative ? Because I'm worried about the performance loss of C#, I searched for a C++ framework and found SFML. It's based on C++ but can be integrated into C#. I already have some experience with UDK, but I am really interested in creating more by myself ( lighting physics etc ). I didn't start yet, what would you recommend me to use / learn ? I am going to create a first person shooter (3D) and I have plenty of time for this. My aim is realtime lighting, realtime global illumination, image-based reflections etc. I want to develop for Windows. Edit: I found something interesting: OpenTK. It supports the latest version of OpenGL which is on the same level as DX11 (if my knowledge is correct). It makes use of mono.

• Improve speed of "start menu" in Linux Mint 10 - Ubuntu 10.10 derivative [closed]

  I have a global menu (including application, administration and system tabs) that is taking too much time (for me) to load (about 2.5 seconds). Of course, this time is taken only during first start. After it have loaded, next times are better ( less than 0.2 miliseconds) The menu was taking more time before (about 5 seconds), and I found that was because of the 'Other' part of the menu, that included many applications installed with Wine, so I removed all of them (I didn't need them at all). I have a "normal" knowledge of programming, and I think that the process of starting the menu for the first time has some kind of "cache function", that tries to find which apps are present that need to be placed under menu to be shown to user. But didn't found this function so that I could analyze in details what he is doing (if searching for files under "~/.local/share/applications" or anything else). Also, I found that hitting "Alt-F2" also fires this "cache function", because after waiting it to load, the process of opening the menu took less than 0.2 miliseconds. So, could anyone help me in order to reduce this time? I found on internet that some user could reduce the time by resizing the icons of applications. But found here that most of my icons are already at 25x25 size. Any other idead? Maybe a multiprocess to load it, or include it under startup... don't know. Ps: Sorry if this is an awkward question, but I just do not like waiting for things to happen, and think that this process should be smoother than it's now. Also, thanks in advance!

• Oracle to Join OECD Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers

  Oracle is pleased to announce that Bastian Fischer, vice president and general manager for EMEA, Oracle Utilities, will participate in the 2010 Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers on 25 May in France. The roundtable, hosted by OECD Secretary General Angel Gurría, will help determine how cities can contribute to green growth incentives and address the challenges to success. The OECD is developing a global Green Growth Strategy that will identify policies and approaches that can shift production and consumption towards a clean, low-carbon and sustainable economy. Already, more than 500 European cities have signed up to the 2020 carbon pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent in ten years. This initiative is driving the adoption of innovative technologies such as the smart gird, which deliver substantial benefits to support this mission by allowing utilities to manage their distribution grids more efficiently, reducing emissions and lowering the risk of outages. A successful smart grid infrastructure will allow green cities to manage their energy usage and succeed in their pledge to meet European targets for carbon reduction, which will undoubtedly be a discussion topic at the roundtable. • Game software design

  I have been working on a simple implementation of a card game in object oriented Python/HTML/Javascript and building on the top of Django. At this point the game is in its final stage of development but, while spotting a big issue about how I was keeping the application state (basically using a global variable), I reached the point that I'm stuck. The thing is that ignoring the design flaw, in a single-threaded environment such as under the Django development server, the game works perfectly. While I tried to design classes cleanly and keep methods short I now have in front of me an issue that has been keeping me busy for the last 2 days and that countless print statements and visual debugging hasn't helped me spot. The reason I think has to do with some side-effects of functions and to solve it I've been wondering if maybe refactoring the code entirely with static classes that keep no state and just passing the state around might be a good option to keep side-effects under control. Or maybe trying to program it in a functional programming style (although I'm not sure Python allows for a purely functional style). I feel that now there's already too many layers that the software (which I plan to make incredibly more complex by adding non trivial features) has already become unmanageable. How would you suggest I re-take control of my code-base that (despite being still only at < 1000 LOC) seems to have taken a life of its own?

• Using textureGrad for anisotropic integration approximation

  I'm trying to develop a real time rendering method using real time acquired envmap (cubemap) for lightning. This implies that my envmap can change as often as every frame and I therefore cannot use any method base on precomputation of the envmap (such as convolution with BRDF...) So far my method worked well with Phong BRDF. For specular contribution I direclty read the value in my sampleCube and I use mipmap levels + linear filter for simulating the roughtness of the material considered: int size = textureSize(envmap, 0).x; float specular_level = log2(size * sqrt(3.0)) - 0.5 * log2(ns + 1); vec3 env_specular = ks * specular_color * textureLod(envmap, l_g, specular_level); From this method I would like to upgrade to a microfacet based BRDF. I already have algorithm for evaluating the shape (including anisotropic direction) of the reflection but I cannot manage to read the values I want in my sampleCube. I believe I have to use textureGrad(envmap, l_g, X, Y); with l_g being the reflection direction in global space but I cannot manage to find which values to give to X and Y in order to correctly specify the area I want to consider. What value should I give to X and Y in orther for textureGrad(envmap, l_g, X, Y); to give the same result as textureLod(envmap, l_g, specular_level);

• NRF Week - Disney Store Tour

  Disney has created a real buzz at this year's NRF event. Yesterday morning we began the Oracle Retail Exchange program with a visit to the flagship Disney store in Times Square. Additionally Oracle made a key announcement with Disney  on Oracle Retail's Point of Sale implementation in 330 stores worldwide. Today   Disney's Steve Finney gave a super session on The Magic of Disney at the NRF Big Show. We also saw Disney making an exclusive news announcement about their plans for Global store openings at the Oracle trade show stand - with a little help from Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Disney Stores have been entirely reinvented since the company in 2008 took ownership after previously franchising the retail arm of the business. They have subsequently been a strong Oracle partner and technology has played a key role in their re imagination of the store environment. As every sector of the economy transforms to adapt to changing global economic pressures, every business has to adapt.
