• How do you debug Silverlight applications with Chrome AND hit breakpoints?

  I am using Visual Studio 2010 to create a Silverlight 4 application. I set a breakpoint in my code-behind, start the debug session from Visual Studio, and unfortunately, my breakpoint never gets hit. So, I eventually I tried setting my default browser to Internet Explorer ... and lo and behold ... my breakpoint gets suddenly hit. Is Chrome a supported browser for debugging Silverlight applications? If so, what am I missing in order to get this to work? Or, is Internet Explorer the only supported browser when it comes to debugging?

• Show underlying applications mouse cursor when hovering over visible section of my application.

  I am writing a WPF application that allows the user to draw over the entire screen when the right mouse button is held down. I use a full screen transparent overlay form to achieve this, however, as I draw lines with the mouse, what's happening is that the portion of my window that contains the line is becoming visible (as expected). The undesired effect of this is that if the line is over a part of another application such as a textbox, or hyperlink, this changes the cursor back to the default cursor my my app (arrow), instead of the other applications desired cursor (IBeam). I want my overlay to be seamless to the user, and just show their drawing path, rather than have any interaction with the mouse cursor. See my example below:

  Hi all. I have a client-server Silverlight application, which is use Socets. I have server appliaction on may computer(Win Form application) and client applucation as web site(Silverlight application). I use policy server which open port 943. Everything works fine on this application. But now I need to write another client-server application. Server for that application olso use port 943 for policy connection. When I try to run this 2 server applications on the same compyeter an excepten is thrown which says that only one application can work on port 943. How can I solve this problem? Thanks.

  I recently received a project that contains multiple web applications with no MVC structure. For starters I've created a library (DLL) that will contain the main Business Logic. The problem is with Caching - If I use the current web context cache object than I might end up with duplicate caching (as the web context will be different for every application). I'm currently thinking about implementing a simple caching mechanism with a singleton pattern that will allow the different web sites (aka different application domains) to share their "caching wisdom". I'd like to know what is the best way to solve this problem.

  How can I manage multiple versions of a database easily? I have some data (as views as selects for data originating in tables from other schemas), which other database may reference using various means including database synonyms & links. • How to prevent application thievery (specific to Android applications)?

  Hey, I was wondering what the most effective way of preventing people from stealing my application (downloading a copy of the .apk online rather than buying it). I've spent a lot of time on one in particular (Droidbox) and won't be releasing Sync until I can guarantee that the people who are providing illegal copies of the pro version aren't able to. Anyone implemented this? I've tried checking my package signature verses an the signature of an unsigned copy but it appears to be the same - perhaps I'm doing something incorrectly here. I'm unsure whether people actually distribute the signed .apk in which case I don't think signature validation would work to begin with... Please note, this question is specific to Android Marketplace Applications - the difference being, application delivery is out of my hands and I have no way of linking between a legitimate purchase and an illegal download.

  Hello, I was wondering, when is the right time or the correct project size to start using project management applications ( like Redmine or Trac ). I have a serious project, for now it's only me developing, but I use redmine to set my project versions, issues, and estimations. I think it's a good idea, because you never know when somebody else is going to join the team, and also allows me to organize myself effectively. I ask this question because I was Teaching Assistant at my university for one year in a row for a course, and I got questions about this very very often. While I'm a believer of the KISS principle, I think that learning to use this tools early is a win-win most of the time. I really believe that we can avoid this question to become argumentative, and that there's somewhat of a consensus about this issue, which I consider quite important in todays software development world. So, when is the right time ? what is the correct project/team size ?

However, Wikipedia says that "NLBS is intended for ... stateless applications". Our web application, however, is absolutely "stateful": it is a closed site to which users will have access by login and password, and information for every user will be different: people will see their own trades and operations. Should we still use NLB in this scenario? Thank you.

The standard way is to edit apps/myapp/models.py this way: from apps import tagging tagging.register(MyModel) I want to keep both applications without changes, for example, to be able to pull new versions and just replace them. So I tried putting this into project settings.py, in the end, but of course this fails. from apps.myapp.models import MyModel from apps import tagging tagging.register(MyModel) (This fails when importing MyModel.) Any other way?

More precisely how could you write an application that modifies the Windows Taskbar or the Windows Desktop? I'm really interested in this topic but cannot find a lot of information. I've read about extending the Windows Shell but I can't seem to find anything related to modifying the Taskbar and the Desktop. I'm looking for something along the lines of Rainmeter. How did those guys create an application that lives inside the Windows Desktop? I'd like to point out that my prefered language for this would be C# but if you want to give me hints in other languages I'm fine with it and I am running on Windows 7. Thank you

• Preferred data-format for user-data in java applications?

  I'm currently developing a desktop application in java, which stores user data such as bookmarks for ftp-servers. When deciding how to save these informations, I ended up using xml, simply because I like the way xpath works. I was thinking about json too, which seems more lightweight. What is your preferred way to store data in java desktop applications (in general) and why? What about java-persistence, does that have any advantages worth noting? And how much does the size of user data matter? Its not always possible to store data in a database (or preferable), and in my experience xml does not scale well. Let me know what you think!

  Hi! We are planning to create two sharepoint web applications using SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Edition. All Users that have access to web app 1, should also be able to access web app 2. This authentication shall be powered by server 2003 active directory. -- do I need to use claims based authentication? If so -- can I use Windows Based Authentication with NTLM for that? The only thing I really want is that users navigating from web app 1 to web app 2 (and vice versa) do not have to authenticate twice. I do NOT want to configure Kerberos if it is not absolutely necessare though... Can you give me any hints? Thanks!

  The VSTO bit I understand. Visual Studio has the project templates to get you started with creating nice .NET based add-ins. But where is VSTA? I installed the SDK but it seems to be gears towards adding extensibility to your own applications. I had thought that VSTA was like the new VBA for Office 2007. Infopath 2007 seems to be VSTA enabled but I cannot seem to find where Excel 2007 is also VSTA enabled. Am I missing something?

• [C#] Running elevated applications on user login with UAC?

  I need to start a program every time the user logs in, but I cannot do this without being met by a UAC dialog asking for permissions for that application. Is there any way to have an application start up on user login without the user having to answer the UAC prompt? I was thinking about running a service, but this would be a last resort. I saw something about an Application Compatibility Toolkit to disable UAC for certain applications, but I feel this is too big of a hassle - even services would be easier to program. I was just wondering if there is an even easier solution I am missing. Thanks in advance.

I'm not complaining about NAnt, Ivy or CruiseControl at all, as they've been brilliant in helping our team of developers become more sure of the quality of their code, but it just seems strange that these tools are very popular, yet we're all re-inventing the CI-wheel. Is there a pre-made solution for building .Net applications, using the tools mentioned above?

• Are there any medium-sized web applications built with CGI::Application that are open-sourced?

  I learn best by taking apart something that already does something and figuring out why decisions were made in which manner. Recently I've started working with Perl's CGI::Application framework, but found i don't really get along well with the documentation (too little information on how to best structure an application with it). There are some examples of small applications on the cgi-app website, but they're mostly structured such that they demonstrate a small feature, but contain mostly of code that one would never actually use in production. Other examples are massively huge and would require way too much time to dig through. And most of them are just stuff that runs on cgiapp, but isn't open source. As such I am looking for something that has most base functionality like user logins, db access, some processing, etc.; is actually used for something but not so big that it would take hours to even set them up. Does something like that exist or am i out of luck?

  I have a ThinkPad X61, and I'd like to configure sensitivity of the Synaptics pointing stick scrolling feature on a per-application basis. I did this about 4 years ago on my ThinkPad T41, using a configuration file - but I can no longer find any info on this configuration file, and there are no configuration files under C:\Program Files\Synaptics. The pointing stick is usually known as TrackPoint or UltraNav in IBM material. Specifically, I'm trying to reduce scrolling sensitivity in Google Chrome on a Windows 7 64-bit X61 ThinkPad.

• Why are emails sent from my applications being marked as spam?

  Hi. I have 2 web apps running on the same server. The first is www.nimikri.com and the other is www.hourjar.com. Both apps share the same IP address (75.127.100.175). My server is through a shared hosting company. I've been testing my apps, and at first all my emails were being delivered to me just fine. Then a few days ago every email from both apps got dumped into my spam box (in gmail and google apps). So far the apps have just been sending emails to me and nobody else, so I know people aren't manually flagging them as spam. I did a reverse DNS lookup for my IP and the results I got were these: 100.127.75.in-addr.arpa NS DNS2.GNAX.NET. 100.127.75.in-addr.arpa NS DNS1.GNAX.NET. Should the reverse DNS lookup point to nimikri.com and hourjar.com, or are they set up fine the way they are? I noticed in the email header these 2 lines: Received: from nimikri.nimikri.com From: Hour Jar <[email protected]> Would the different domain names be causing gmail to think this is spam? • Are there any Pandora/Slacker like applications to create stations/play lists from personal mp3 library?

  I'm interested in having playlists created automatically much in the same way that Pandora and Slacker Radio "create" radio channels. I understand that iTunes has the Genius feature, but this requires that the files have been encoded with iTunes, which is not the case with my music, among other reasons I'm not considering iTunes. I'm running an Windows environment, but would consider Linux options as it would give me a reason to learn more about Linux. In the end the music files and play lists will end up on my Android phone and tablets. Working with Amazon's Cloud Player would be nice, but not required.

I used VMMap tool (from sysinternals) to take a look at memory, and i saw: private 160000K working set 100000K Obviously, it's much less than 11.8 Gb -So how did it happen?   I have an asp.net application running on Windows 2012 in IIS 8 that has a very time consuming application start process (essentially the code running in the Application_Start() event can take up to 2 minutes). Thus I'd like to minimize the number of times the application is started so that the user can avoid a long wait. I've enabled Preload in the application settings, and I've set the Start Mode to AlwaysRunning in the application pool. Yet the application still ends after not being used for a while, resulting in a very long time for the first visit to the website after the application shuts down. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can prevent this? Thanks

• What could cause Citrix Xenapp to stop streaming applications after the server's IP address changed?

  We have a Citrix XenApp 5.0 server running on Windows 2008, and today we moved ISPs so our IP addresses changed. The IP addresses have propagated, the XenApp server is running, and internally we can connect to the server, choose an app, and have it streamed without issue. Externally we are only able to authenticate to the server and choose an app, but the app never launches in the client. I'm guessing there's a hand-off between the part of XenApp that authenticates a user and shows what apps they can launch, and the part that does the app streaming, and that second part is hard-coded to use an the old ip address. Any ideas why this could be happening?
