    I installed, today 10/05/12, for the first time. I've used Windows for several years. Well, it's not as user friendly as some people claim. I decided to give it a try but it's very upsetting that everything seems to be OK with my wireless connection, I'm connected, and I just can not connect to the internet. When I open Firefox I get the message "Server not found". Help please! I never had this problems with Windows.

  • CSS not loading when site is viewed via Windows VPN

    Internal site has recently been redesigned, but IE8 does not seem to be loading the new css rules only when viewed via VPN. I really have no clue what to look for. I can't reproduce the problem, but it's apparently affecting client for the last month. I've suggested: Reloading IE8 Checking Internet Permissions Flushing the cache I'm not really certain what direction to search for the answer. Is it likely to be a server permissions issue? a VPN connection issue? a rare ie8 CSS bug?

  • How do I ensure all of the ports on my machine are open or reachable?

    I was testing port connectivity on my machine because WoW (which uses TCP ports 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999) couldn't connect to the Internet. So I downloaded PFPortChecker application and ran it using Wine (v1.3). After I tried to check every port, it seems like they're not reachable/closed. Why is that? My firewall is disabled so why is this happening? How can I open these ports and how can I see if these ports are opened or not? Also, how can I determine which application is using them?

  • WiFi is painfully slow, sometimes stops altogether

    Lately my WiFi connection has been quite slow, and sometimes I lose my internet connection altogether (but the computer does not actually disconnect from the WiFi network). This only affects my laptop and only when it's running Ubuntu, so I think it must be a problem with Ubuntu. I haven't changed anything recently; this is on 12.10 64-bit. What could it be? Update: It's doing this now. The connection isn't completely dead, it's just staying under 5 kB/s. Still frustrating though. It also seems to affect all users.

    Good day! I recently installed 12.04. I am having a hard time connecting to the Internet using my Sun Broadband Wireless. I installed the 64-bit version. I am from the Philippines. When I plug in my USB stick, it does not show up on the Network Manager/ no new connection can be detected. I try to edit it using Edit Connections but still to no avail. I have tried doing these steps from kenji08, kartonista, and from review-ninja (for this one, I can't seem to get pass the first step.) I hope those information can help.

    In Windows XP, if you had a folder open in Explorer, you could access the right-click context menu of a folder by right-clicking the folder icon in the titlebar of the Explorer window. In Win7 this no longer works. Right-clicking the background of the open folder, or right-clicking the folder icon in the info pane at the bottom, does not give the same context menu; there are items that are not in these menus, but are in the menu when I right-click on a folder from outside it. Given that I have a folder open in Explorer, how can I, without navigating out of the folder, access the same right-click context menu that I would get if I navigated to the parent folder and right-clicked my target folder?

    I'm having an odd problem on one of my Windows 7 machines. At machine startup, explorer.exe is working properly - I can use the Start menu, click on desktop icons, etc. At some later point, though, I lose the ability to interact with desktop icons. I can't double-click to open files on the desktop, and I can't right-click to see the properties window. Oddly enough the Start menu still works properly, and I can still open an Explorer window into my desktop and access everything. I can get around the problem by killing explorer.exe and restarting it using Task Manager, but it's annoying to have to do this over and over. Does anyone have any ideas? I took a look at startup files with msconfig and didn't see any obvious problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Say I want to use a proxy auto-config file that is stored at C:\proxy.pac. To make Internet Explorer use this configuration I have to specify the pac-file in the LAN settings in the following way: file://C:/proxy.pac But Safari, that uses the same proxy settings, will ignore it in this case. To make Safari use the pac-file I have to reference it as file:///C:/proxy.pac (3 slashes at the beginning) which, according to Wikipedia is the correct format. But this way Internet Explorer will ignore it. Opera and Chrome, that also use the same proxy settings, are fine with both ways but is there another option that will work with Safari and Internet Explorer at the same time?

  • IE 9 home page is hijacked by avg

    I definitely know how to change the home page in Internet Explorer (Tools -> Options -> General). The problem is, no matter what I put there, it never changes. Stop/restart Internet Explorer and the old home page is back. I did some research to see if there is a registry key that I could tweak to get the home page to set properly. I changed the start page registry key and refreshed the view and the start page key (without even restarting regedit) was reset back to its original value. Now I'm a little concerned. But how much of an impact can a service have on your system, especially if it is ‘corrupted’ by malware? Today’s SuperUser Q&A post has the answers to a curious reader’s questions. Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Forivin wants to know how much impact a service can have on a Windows system, especially if it is ‘corrupted’ by malware: What kind malware/spyware could someone put into a service that does not have its own process on Windows? I mean services that use svchost.exe for example, like this: Could a service spy on my keyboard input? Take screenshots? Send and/or receive data over the internet? Infect other processes or files? Delete files? Kill processes? How much impact could a service have on a Windows installation? Are there any limits to what a malware ‘corrupted’ service could do? The Answer SuperUser contributor Keltari has the answer for us: What is a service? A service is an application, no more, no less. The advantage is that a service can run without a user session. This allows things like databases, backups, the ability to login, etc. to run when needed and without a user logged in. What is svchost? According to Microsoft: “svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries”. Could we have that in English please? Some time ago, Microsoft started moving all of the functionality from internal Windows services into .dll files instead of .exe files. From a programming perspective, this makes more sense for reusability…but the problem is that you can not launch a .dll file directly from Windows, it has to be loaded up from a running executable (exe). Thus the svchost.exe process was born. So, essentially a service which uses svchost is just calling a .dll and can do pretty much anything with the right credentials and/or permissions. If I remember correctly, there are viruses and other malware that do hide behind the svchost process, or name the executable svchost.exe to avoid detection. Have something to add to the explanation?   • WinXP - Having trouble sharing internet with 3G USB modem via ICS

    all! I've been banging my head against a wall with this issue for a few days now and am hoping someone can help out. I recently signed up for T-Mobile's webConnect 3G/4G service to replace the faltering (and slow) DSL connection in my apartment. The goal was to put the SIM in one of my old phones and use its built-in WLAN tethering feature to share Internet out to rest of my computers. I quickly found out that webConnect-provisioned SIMs do not work with regular smartphones, so I was forced to either buy a 4G-compatible router or tether one of my old laptops to my wireless router and share out that way. I chose the latter, and it's sharpening my inner masochistic self by the day. Here's the setup: GSM USB modem (via hub), ICS host - 10/100 Mbps Ethernet NIC, ICS "guest" - WAN port of my SMC WGBR14N wireless router in bridged mode (i.e. wireless access point). Ideally, this would make my laptop the DHCP server and internet gateway with the WAP giving everyone wireless coverage. I can browse internet on the host laptop fine. However, when clients try to connect, they get a DHCP-assigned IP from the laptop and are able to use the Internet for a few minutes before completely dying. After that happens, they are able to re-associate with the WAP and get IP addresses, but are unable to use Internet or resolve IP addresses until the laptop and router are restarted. If they do get access, it's very, very slow. After running Wireshark on the host machine, it turns out that this is because every TCP connection keeps getting RST. DNS seems to work. I would normally think the firewall is the culprit here, but when it drops packets, it drops them completely. The fact that TCP connections are being ACK'ed by the destination rules that out. Of course, none of the event Log isn't saying anything about what's going on. I also tried disabling power management on the NIC, since that's caused problems in the past; that didn't help either. I finally disabled receive-side scaling as per a Microsoft KB (that applied to Windows Server 2003, SP2) to no avail. I'm thinking of trying it with a different NIC (will be tough; don't have a spare Ethernet NIC around for the laptop), but I'm getting the impression that this simply doesn't work.     We have a very interesting problem. The network is configured in this way: internet is connected to Trendnet switch TS DHCP server at 192.168.0.1 running on Ubuntu (S) is connected to internet switch DNS is also configured on 192.168.0.1 on S D-Link Wi-Fi boosters are connected to switch TS PCs use D-Link PCI-E Wi-Fi cards to get access to network PCs have both Ubuntu and Windows 7 There are about 40 PCs. When PC is booted to Ubuntu it easily gets access to internet. But when it's booted to Windows 7, it gets a valid IP-address, but doesn't get access to internet. The address, mask, DNS, GW-address are totally the same as when it's booted under Ubuntu. The S is reacheble and pingable. Sometimes when we are lucky the PC gets access to Internet, but after rebooting it can lose it. When PC under Windows has access, it has totally the same settings as when it doesn't. What can be done? UPDATE I shared a dropbox with 2 captures of traffic. Ping.pcap is a capture of pinging 8.8.8.8. And google-browser.pcap is a capture of opening a google.com in a browser, both of them are in tcpdump formats and made by Wireshark on Win PC. The MAC of Win PC ends on b7:63 and IP is 192.168.0.130.     My Dell XPS 15 (haswell) was working fine until I stupidly accepted recently to apply Ubuntu updates. Since then, my wifi does not work (it shows "device not managed" when clicking wifi icon in toolbar). Even USB to Ethernet adapter does not seem to work.     I have a strange problem with Internet Connection Sharing on a laptop running Vista Business. This laptop is connected to the internet via the ethernet port, which goes to an ADSL modem. it is automatically assigned the IP address 192.168.1.50, and the modem/gateway is 192.168.1.1 My friends laptop is running Vista Home. Previously, I would create an ad hoc wireless network, enable ICS, and everything would be perfect. My friend would have internet access via this. However, something has now mysteriously broken. If I enable ICS on the wireless connection, it resets my Local Area Connection, assigning it the manual IP address of 192.168.0.1, which means my connection to the internet is destroyed. Both wireless adapters on each network are assigned auto configuration addresses, in the 168. range. They can see each other fine, but my friends laptop cannot access the internet via mine, even after I have restored the Local Area Connection settings. I understand the computer with ICS enabled must have the IP of 192.168.0.1, but previously, before whatever went wrong, my wireless adapter would be 192.168.0.1 and my friends computer would get an IP via DHCP. I have also tried setting static IP address and making a bridge, none of which works. How can I fix this problem, and prevent enabling ICS from touching my Local Area Connection? Both machines have no firewall, have appropriate settings etc...
