• MessageBox if Recordset Update is Successful

  In Access 2007, I have a form to add a new contact to a table: RecSet.AddNew RecSet![Code_Personal] = Me.txtCodePersonal.Value RecSet![FName] = Me.TxtFName.Value RecSet![LName] = Me.txtLName.Value RecSet![Tel Natel] = Me.txtNatTel.Value RecSet![Tel Home] = Me.txtHomeTel.Value RecSet![Email] = Me.txtEmail.Value RecSet.Update This has worked so far, and the contact has successfully been aded. But I'm having two problems: I want to display a messagebox to tell the user the contact was successfully added If the contact was not successfully added because A contact with this name already exists A different issue Then display a message box "Contact already exists" or "error occured" respectively. My idea of doing this is: If recSet.Update = true Then MsgBox "Paolo Bernasconi was successfully added" Else if RecSet![FName] & RecSet![LName] 'already exist in table MsgBox "Contact already exists" Else MsgBox "An unknown error occured" I know this code is wrong, and obviously doesn't work, but it's just to give you an idea of what I'm trying to achieve. • Change a subform's recordsource from another subform in Access

  I am using MS Access 2003 and I have a form with two subforms (subform1 and subform2) which are not nested. They both display tabular data on them so they cannot be nested. I would like to change the recordsource on subform2 based on a value in the current record on subform1. I have tried to put the code in the oncurrent event of subform1 but I cannot seem to refer to the recordsource in subform2 from subform1. From subform1 I have tried me.parent!subform2.form.recordsource but I get a runtime error ‘2455’ You have entered an expression that has an invalid reference to the property form/report. Any ideas?

• Expression Too Complex In Access 2007

  When I try to run this query in Access through the ODBC interface into a MySQL database I get an "Expression too complex in query expression" error. The essential thing I'm trying to do is translate abbreviated names of languages into their full body English counterparts. I was curious if there was some way to "trick" access into thinking the expression is smaller with sub queries, or if someone else had a better idea of how to solve this problem. I thought about making a temporary table and doing a join on it, but that's not supported in Access SQL. Just as an FYI, the query worked fine until I added the big long IFF chain. I tested the query on a smaller IFF chain for three languages, and that wasn't an issue, so the problem definitely stems from the huge IFF chain (It's 26 deep). Also, I might be able to drop some of the options (like combining the different forms of Chinese or Portuguese) As a test, I was able to get the SQL query to work after paring it down to 14 IFF() statements, but that's a far cry from the 26 languages I'd like to represent. The list of languages should have been a table in the database and the login.lang should have been a FK into that table. Unfortunately this isn't how the database was written, and it's not really mine to modify. The languages are placed into the login.lang field by the PHP running on top of the database.

  In am using MS Word via OLE to produce documents from my application. I want to give the users that have MS Office 2007 SP2 installed the ability to save the documents as PDF. This is only available in SP2, and the option should be hidden if the service pack is not installed (and of course also for users of previous versions of MS Office). Is this information available anywhere, like in the registry or any configuration file?

• Create Access databases programatically through vb.net

  Let me preface this by saying that I know this is a stupid way to go about this, but it needs to be handled in this way. I need to make an application that from a master database creates a number of access database files (tables of a larger db), then these are manually given to users who fill in data, the database files are emailed back to a user who, through the application, combines them again. The only part of this that I am unsure about is problematically creating the access db's. I have read that through Microsoft Jet OLE DB Provider and Microsoft ADO Ext I can create them (the tables and data), but I also need forms. I have yet to start writing anything and this is away from my area of work, so any insight/links would be much appreciated. Also, I would hope to be able to write this in the free express version of visual studio. Are there components needed that would prevent me from this? Thanks.

I found some framworks like accessunit but that's Unit testing, what abouut the forms? What about the different reports etc. A counter-example in "testing" is e.g the rails or Seaside or Smalltalk area. Where testing is thought of as integral part. But I have not found anything comparable for Access based solutions. Maybe some of you know better?

• Entering Complex Data into Access

  Fairly new to Access and trying to do something that seems simple, but may be very complex. I want to create a database of projects, each project has several phases (ie proposal, marketing, etc) and that will allow for multiple employees to work on a single project. Ie Bob and John are working on project number 102. From here, i would like to enter the forecasted start and end dates for each phase of the project, and enter the forecasted number our hours each employee will be allowed to work on that phase of that project ie. Project - Employee - Phase - Start - End - (list weeks) 102 - Bob - Marketing - 12-May-10 - 21-May-10 - 3 - 5 (3 hours first week, 5 hours the second) and so on Basically would all this data be on one table, or several? And can access dynamically show the weeks between the start and end date so that i can input the hours? I feel this database will become severely complicated :S Thanks, J

When am using Outlook Web Access and I receive MS Office 2007 attachments from some colleagues, OWA requires me to save the file, rather than it opening with a double-click. When I "Save Target As..." it gives only the option to save as "Compressed (Zip) File" even though the filename appears as "filename.xlsx" Then, when I open the saved folder, the filename does not appear anywhere. Ideas?

  I'm a novice with Microsoft Access as my background is mostly .NET. I'm sure what I'm trying to accomplish is dead simple but I need some direction. I have a report and a query. The query returns a single numeric value based on a single numeric criteria. Select total from table where id = [topic] I have placed a text box on my report so I can feed the id to this query and in return get the total. It seems like DLookUp is what I want but no matter how I construct it, I get an "#Error" in the text box when I run the report. Currently my DLookUp looks like this (I just hard-coded now for simplicity): =DLookUp("[total]","myquery","[topic] = 3") How can I pass a value from a field on my report to a query so I can return the query's single numeric value?   I have an API which opens an access database for read and write. The API opens the connection when it's constructed and closes the connection when it's destructed. When the db is opened an .ldb file is created and when it closes it's removed (or disappears). There are multiple applications using the API to read and write to the access db. I want to know: Is ldb file used to track multiple connections Does calling an db.close() closes all connections or just one instance. Will there be any sync issues with the above approach.

  To my surprise and delight I read that an adminsitrator can import (nearly directly) an Access 2007 database into a sharepoint site. Automagically, the database in transformed into lists and views with some table lookup thrown in for good measure. With Access 2007 installed on the client machine, even the forms and what not can still be reused. To me... this sounds to good to be true. Has anyone actually dones this? With all this good news, where is the bad stuff and pitfalls to this. Depending on the size of the database, wouldn't this some how "gum up the works" in the SharPoint database? • Can I password protect a Publisher file?

  I was asked ealier this week if it was possible to password protect a Microsoft Office 2007 Publisher document. I was under the impression that it would be like protecting a Word document, by going to Office Save As Word Document Tools General Options and creating a password to modify, like shown below. This also works for Excel documents. However, in Publisher 2007 the option is not there. The only option under "Tools" is "Map network drive". We overcame the issue as saving as a PDF and distributing that, but is there a way to do what we want?

  Okay so I've tried stopping/registering the win32tm service on this Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Computer. C:\Users\Administrator>net stop w32time The Windows Time service is stopping. C:\Users\Administrator>net start w32time The Windows Time service is starting. The Windows Time service was started successfully. I've also disabled the Windows Firewall, that might of been blocking the synchronization. I've done a file scan with sfc /scannow that came back with no errors. • Setup Remote Access in Windows Home Server

  One of the many awesome features of Windows Home Server, is the ability to access your server and other computers on your network remotely. Today we show you the steps to enable Remote Access to your home server from anywhere you have an Internet connection. Remote Access in Windows Home Server has a lot of great features like uploading and downloading files from shared folders, accessing files from machines on your network, and controling machines remotely (on supported OS versions). Here we take a look at the basics of setting it up, choosing a domain name, and verifying you can connect remotely. Setup Remote Access in Windows Home Server Open the Windows Home Server Console and click on Settings. Next select Remote Access, it is off by default, just click the button to turn it on. Wait while your router is configured for remote access, when it’s complete click Next. Notice that it will enable UPnP, if you don’t wish to have that enabled, you can manually forward the correct ports. If you have any problems with the router being automatically configured, we’ll be taking a look at a more detailed troubleshooting guide in the future. The router is successfully configured, and we can continue to the next process of configuring our domain name. The Domain Name Setup Wizard will start. Notice you will need a Windows Live ID to set it up –which is typically your hotmail address. If you don’t already have one, you can get one here. Type in your Live ID email address and password and click Next… Agree to the Home Server Privacy Statement and the Live Custom Domains Addendum. If you’re concerned about privacy and want to learn more about the domain addendum, make sure to read about it before agreeing. There is nothing abnormal to point out about either statement, but if this is your first time setting it up, it’s good to review the information.   Now choose a name for the domain. You should select something that is easy to remember and identifies your home server. The name can contain up to 63 characters, numbers, letters, and hyphens…and must begin and end with a letter or number. When you have the name figured out click the Confirm button. Note: You can only register one domain name per Live ID. If the name isn’t already taken, you’ll get a confirmation message indicating it’s god to go. The wizard is complete and you can now access the home server from the URL provided. A few other things to point out after you’ve set it up…under Domain Name click on the Details button… Which pulls up the domain detail information and you can refresh the data to verify everything is working correctly. Or you can click the Configure button and then change or release your current domain name. Under Web site settings, you can change you site page headline to whatever you want it to be. Accessing Home Server Remotely After you’ve gotten everything setup for your home server domain, you can begin to access it when you’re away from home. Simply type in the domain address you created in the previous steps. The start page is rather boring…and to start accessing your data, click the Log On button in the upper right hand corner. Then enter in your home server credentials to gain access to your files, folders, and network computers. You won’t be able to log in with your administrator user account however, to protect security of your network. Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to access different parts of your home server shares and network computers. Conclusion Now that you have Remote Access setup, you should be able to access and manage your files easily. Being able to access data from your home server remotely is great when you need to get certain files while on the road. The web UI is pretty self explanatory, works best in IE as ActiveX is required, and is smooth and easy to work with. • How to I prevent decimal truncation in Word 2003 when a document is auto populated via a Web Service

  I have a document template which is being auto populated via an external web service. The incoming data exists as a currency (e.g. 3.10) but when it is passed into the Word Document template the variable is truncated to remove any trailing 0's. I need the number to always appear with 2 decimals, even if they are both 0's. This is with the 2003 version of Word, I have not tested with other versions since all of our document templates need to be generated using that version of Word. I feel like this can be done with a Macro or a VB script but I have a very small amount of time & no experience with these tools - Any help is greatly appreciated!

  I'm sole developer of a complex critical software system, written in Visual C++ 2005. It's deployed on a classical Microsoft cluster scenario (active/passive), that has Windows Server 2003 R2. If a server A goes down, the other one (B) starts and take the ownership of its duties. You have to know that: Both servers have the same Microsoft patches/fixes, same hardware, same everything. Both servers use the same memory storage (a RAID-6 through fiber channel). This software has a main module that launches the peripheral modules. if a peripheral module crashes, the main module restarts it. When I switch the application in one of the two servers (let's say the B server) two of the peripheral modules of the main applications just started to crash apparently without reason about 2 seconds after the start of the peripheral module. What could I do to analyze/inspect/resolve this weird situation?
