• Using ADSL Modem/WiFi Router to share existing network wirelessly

  At my uni we have a wired Ethernet connection in our dorms. However, I want to share this connection with my macbook using wifi (so I don't have to be constantly tethered). I am looking at using my DSL G064T ADSL modem/WiFi router as a wifi repeater for the uni network. Is this possible? How would I go about doing this? I understand that it would be possible using a normal Wifi router (seeing as it has an ethernet 'in' port where it would get the external connection from.), so is it just not possible using the router I have? If i need to buy another one, which one would you recommend?

• Cannot run setups from a vboxsvr mapped network drive on Windows 7 within VirtualBox

  I'm trying to run an application setup by double-clicking the setup.exe from within Windows Explorer. The file is located on a mapped network drive, and I'm using Windows 7. This results in the following error message: The specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again. The workaround I found is to copy the installer to the main hard drive (c:) and run it from there; however, this is rather inconvenient. The same action did work on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. I have the impression that the problem only occurs with installers, as everything seemed to work fine with regular exe's. Is there anyone who can explain this odd behavior? Update: After some extended tests I noticed that the problem only occurs with a mapped drive of VirtualBox's "shared folders" (cf. vboxsvr). Mapping an SMB drive works fine.

• Homegroup doesn't show other computers, but "Network" does

  I have a desktop and a laptop (both running windows 7) in my Windows 7 homegroup. The desktop created the homegroup, and the laptop joined it. Both share a few folders. On the laptop, I have no problem accessing the Desktop's shared folders via the "Homegroup" sidebar button in Windows Explorer. However, on the Desktop, I get the message No other homegroup computers are currently available in the homegroup screen. However, if I go to the Network page, I can see the other computer and browse its shared media. These shares were made by right clicking and choosing "Share with Homegroup". I can access the media, so this isn't a big problem, but I'm just confused as to why the Homegroup screen denies the existence of the other computer. Has anybody else encountered and resolved this?

  I know this is yet another question on how to setup network but I hope you are not bored of such questions yet. The site is also an office, so it includes windows dc, windows ad, exchange, sql, file sharing, development app servers and other pcs. In addition to office (internal) things, there are both test and prod environments consisting of a web server-app server-sql stack. There is also ftp service open to public. I consider: dmz1 - web server - exchange edge - ftp dmz2 - app server - sql for app server internal - dc and ad - exchange hub and transport - internal file sharing - sql for internal use - app servers for internal use - pcs public - dmz1, only web, ftp and smtp public - dmz2 not possible public - internal not possible dmz1 - dmz2 is possible from web servers to app servers by using http or ajp dmz1 - internal is only possible for exchange, otherwise not possible dmz2 - internal not possible Does this sound ok ? Any other recommendations ? It will be configured using either MS ISA or Jupiter SSG. Thank you.

• Can't access website on local network

  I have a personal website running on my PC (Ubuntu), connected to the internet through a router. I can connect without any problem to my website when I'm not at home so I guess my router is correctly configured but whem I try to access the site using a local adress at home (192.168.XX.XX), it times out after 30 seconds or so. What tool could I use to find out where is the problem? I have tried a tracert command on my Windows PC but add just a useless line. If it's of any help, my website is running on Tomcat 6 but I don't think the problem is here as it would be weird that the server would be configured to be accessible from the internet but not the local network.

• Script to list current user's mapped network drives

  I have a Windows XP/ Server 2003 environment here users have mapped different network drives themselves using arbitrary drive letters. Some of these users do not know how to tell the true UNC path of these drives, and I would like to be able to run a script or program to query those drives and show me the drive letters and the corresponding UNC paths. I would like to see output like "net use" in that user's context so that I can see what drives THEY have mapped. I would need to do this using my own admin account, which is where the difficulty lies. I understand this information would be stored in the HKCU registry? I would love to be able to do this in Powershell, but a vbscript or even a standalone executable would do. Thanks.

  I'm setting up a periodic port scan and vulnerability scan for a medium-sized network implementing a customer-facing web application. The hosts run CentOS 5.4. I've used tools like Nmap and OpenVAS, but our firewall rules have special cases for connections originating from our own facilities and servers, so really the scan should be done from the outside. Rather than set up a VPS or EC2 server and configuring it with various tools, it seems like this could just be contracted out to a port and vulnerability scanning service. If they do it professionally they may be more up to date than something I set up and let run for a year... Any recommendations or experience doing this?

I have configured the virtual PC to use Shared Networking (NAT) I have disabled the firewall on the virtual windows XP The problem: I am unable to PING from Windows 2003 (the host) to the Windows XP (virtual) I do have normal traffic from the virtual to the internet Could this problem be related to routing? How I can I fix this network configuration to allow for the following traffic: 1. From Virtual to Internet 2. From Host to Virtual 3. • Double VPN Network Authentication

  I have a project I'm working on and looking for some info. Right now I have a VPN network using Cisco Pix 501's for the vpn clients and a Cisco VPN Concentrator 3000 for the VPN Server. Since the Pix is constantly connected to the vpn, I want to add a extra level of authentication. Meaning when the user on the other end goes to access anything on the VPN they are asked for a username password before the connection is established. I've never done this sort of structure before. So I'm not even sure where to really being or even if my current hardware can do something like this, or if i need to through in some sort of radius/LDAP/Active Directory type server into the mix.

• Windows 7 Printing to a network printer

  We have a 2008 server as our print server. Clients that use windows xp with a logon script to map have no problems printing. When I test printing to a network printer on a windows 7 machine it works fine up to a few machines as soon As i get 12-15 workstations trying to print, when they log in they get the yellow exclamation mark and needs troubleshooting against the printer name. It is being deploy by group policy. I have tried to deploy it by group policy also by group policy preferences and by using a script and i get the same error whatever i try. Does anyone have any suggestions to try and troubleshoot? Once again Windows xp clients have no issues printing at all. It is only windows 7 clients. Thanks

• Slow performance over network (Ubuntu)

  i did setup this NodeJs TCP Server and tested it with a message flooder. Just to see how the performance of the server is. While the message throughput is great if i run the server and the message flooder on the same computer (ubuntu), the throughput dramaticaly decreases if i start the server on computer1(ubuntu1) and the message flooder on computer2(also ubuntu). Both PC are on the same network. In fact, they are directly connected to each other. I started searching the internet for reasons and i suppose i need to tune TCP on both Ubuntu-pcs but until now i haven't been successfull at all. Has anyone experienced such problems, or could someone help me out? Limiting bandwidth has been discussed before, e.g. here, but I can't find any posts which address limiting both bandwidth and latency. I can get either high latency or low bandwidth using tc. But I haven't been able to combine these into a single connection. • SSH access from outside to a pc inside network

  I have a static IP and ADSL router linked to a linksys wireless router to which all my machines are connected. I would want to setup SVN on one of machines and provide SSH access which should be accessible by users outside my network. Would this be possible? Even just SVN access through web should be fine. A client's block device should write simultaneously to several storage nodes A client's block device should not fail as long as not all storage nodes backing it went down The master should automatically redistribute storages' data when a storage node fails or gets added/ removed A single master (which is for metadata only) is fine So ideally the architecture would be very similar to moosefs (http://www.moosefs.org/) but instead of exposing a real filesystem mounted using a fuse client it'd expose block devices on the clients.   I would like to setup a Windows 7 machine as a wifi hotspot that always redirects to the IIS web hosting on the same machine. I have the hotspot piece working with the built in hosted network of Widnows 7. The webhosting was easy enough with IIS. Now, how do I connect the 2? The idea is to have a standalone device that users will be able to connect to the wifi and any webpage they go to will redirect to the internal webpage. • Unexpected network traffic?

  My internet connection is via a fixed wireless connection using a 900MHz Motorola Canopy module. The router reports a fairly consistent 32-64Kbps of incoming traffic on the WAN port. When I attached a PC directly to the port and run Wireshark, I get a dump showing a lot of chatter from other machines that I presume are connected to the same tower. This didn't include end-to-end traffic, but was there were a lot of ARP requests, SSDP traffic, ICMP and other network discovery type stuff. Is this 'normal' or does it suggest a misconfiguration somewhere? As far as I can tell there is no need for my modem to be receiving any of this traffic (other than wanting to know what the names of my neighbours machines and printers are!) Since the internet connection is slow at the best of time, having this amount of background noise seems very wasteful.

  I was trying to create a remote desktop connection from Windows XP to my Windows Vista Ultimate Addition machine at home. This normally works fine. Today after my connection was dropped, I tried to reconnect to my machine. It brings me to the normal startup screen, but when I tried to log in, it gave me the message "This network connection doesn't exist". This doesn't make much sense, as I have reached a Windows style login screen already. My connection returned later that day, but I'm curious as to what happened. Anyone see this before?

  In windows server 2003 when an Event 529 (logon failure) occures with a logon type of 10 (remote logon), the source network IP address is recorded in the event log. On a windows XP machine, this (and some other details) are omitted. If a bot is trying a brute force over RDP (some of my XP machines are (and need to be) exposed with a public IP address), i cannot see the originating IP address so i don't know what to block (with a script i run every few minutes). The DC does not log this detail either when the logon attempt is to the client xp machine and the DC is only asked to authenticate the credentials. Any help getting this detail in the log would be appreciated.

• Best way to script checking whether a machine is on the corporate network

  I am writing a Powershell script to determine if a machine is on the corporate network. The machine may or may not be on the domain, so I want to check at "IP" level. Have written something to check by pinging a couple of servers on a couple of different subnets (to get around the risk of someone being on another (external) subnet with a host on the same IP.) Works, but it's a bit slow, and not especially "future-proof" - e.g. in 2 years time when I decomission the server it'll break. Is there a way I can use the dns suffix being given by the local dhcp server? Just direct me what I need to check - I can figure out the script. Ta, Ben
