• How can I fix the "TERM environment variable not set" warning in eclipse

  I'm running ubuntu 12.04 LTS and working with eclipse (juno) on a c++ project. I keep getting "TERM environment variable not set" in the console while trying to run the program. I realize this means the variable needs to get set. My question is what should it be set to and how do I set it? I've read that it should be 'xterm' in a few places. So I added export TERM=xterm in my .profile and while eclipse stopped giving me the warning, instead it would output unreadable garbage everynow and then (not a side effect of the program). It did display the program output but intermixed were weird characters. This leads me to believe it's not 'xterm' I should be setting TERM to. Or I'm setting it in an incorrect way. Any help is appreciated. Sample output: **TERM environment variable not set.** Please make a selection ----------------------- 1. Create a budget 2. Edit a budget 3. Display a budget 4. Either way, is this likely just an eclipse issue or something I can fix in ubuntu/linux

• Out of sync audio video using mencoder

  hi i converted a mkv (matroska) file to avi using ffmpeg: ffmpeg -i input.mkv -f mp4 -vcodec mpeg4 -sameq -r 29.97 -b 512kb -acodec ac3 -ab 128kb -vol 512 output.avi the output file plays fine using mplayer. after that, i using mencoder to insert subtitles: mencoder output.avi -o new.avi -oac pcm -ovc lavc -subfont-text-scale 3 -sub subtitle.srt however, after i play back the video "new.avi", the video and audio is out of sync. What options can i put into mencoder to sync the A/V. ? I have also tried ffmpeg -newsubtitle option but can't get it work. Any examples of usage of -newsubtitle would be greatly appreciated. thanks

• Bash - Program is writing directly to terminal

  Valve's dedicated server for the Source Engine (srcds_run) on Linux writes directly to the terminal, not stdout. I want to run it as an /etc/init.d daemon on Debian 6, and I'd like to redirect/capture the output to a file. How can I do that? And better yet, why would they output directly to the terminal, is there any benefit in doing that? I suppose I could start another bash instance just for srcds_run, but that seems like a dirty solution, and I still don't know how to redirect the output.

• Bad 3D Performance in Ubuntu 12.04

  I already posted a question before but I didn't really get any advice/help. I'll be a bit more brief/general in hope it'll help. I have an MSI HD 7850 with the Catalyst 12.4 drivers installed. I've found that I'm having bad 3D performance for some reason but I'm not entirely sure what. I suspect it may just that the graphics card is new and AMD just need to work on their drivers but it would be nice to get advice and narrow the problem down so that I can be sure rather than wait for driver updates that may not even help. I ran gxlgears to give some general idea of how bad the performance is. At default size it is averaging around 2000 FPS. The command glxinfo confirms the renderer is using AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series with OpenGL version 4.2. Edits below: As asked for others: lspci -v output is here. fglrxinfo output is here xvinfo output is here glxinfo | grep rendering says yes for direct rendering. These confirmed that everything was configured correctly. Within Unity and Gnome Classic: glxgears had an FPS of around 2000 FPS fgl_glxgears had an FPS of around 544 FPS Within LDXE: glxgears had an FPS of around 4600 FPS fgl_glxgears had an FPS of around 1600 FPS In the end it was discovered that Compiz was causing a large performance decrease and solution was simply to change window manager for the time being. • Configuration Manager Setting Causing Error PRJ0019

  Recently I ran into an issue with a project failing to build on an automated build server using CruiseControl. When I looked into the build log I saw that the Post-Build project was failing with the error message: "error PRJ0019: A tool returned an error code from "Performing Post-Build Event..." This was most frustrating especially since the solution was building without issue on my local development environment. The Post-Build project was a C++ project that basically called several batch files to unregister/register assemblies, copy resources and supporting files, and place other dependencies in the GAC. I decided to run each of the batch files manually to see if that would provide more information as to why this project was failing. This lead me to determine that the batch file that was placing assemblies in the GAC was the culprit and that it was failing to find a particular assembly. The missing assembly was the output of another project. The project that was not producing the expected output was another C++ project that called a batch file. This batch process was actually embedding resource files into an assembly and then copying the assembly to the expected location. The real confusion started when I looked back into my Subversion log and noted that nothing had changed in this project in more than 2 months! It was almost as if the project had stopped building altogether. But what would cause that?! The Configuration Manager, obviously! Checking the solution's Configuration Manager settings, I found that the project that was not producing any output was in fact not selected to be part of the build process when the "Any CPU" platform was selected. This was the problem! I had recently updated the CruiseControl configurations to force the solution to be built targeting the platform "Any CPU". As a result, the project that was at the root of the problem was not configured to be built and the post-build process was failing when it couldn't find what it needed.

• Qualcomm Gobi WWAN modem no longer appears in Network Manager

  Not sure what happened here. I installed Cinnamon on my Ubuntu 12.10 environment yesterday, rebooted when finished and everything was working fine. I even used my WWAN modem after my fixed line broadband went down. However, after starting my machine this morning and seeing that my fixed line is still having problems (intermittently), I clicked the network applet and my WWAN device wasn't listed. It's not in the main network manager window either. In /lib/udev/rules.d/77-mm-qdl-device-blacklist.rules, I found the following line that matches the device IDs from the lsusb output: # Generic Gobi QDL device ATTRS{idVendor}=="05c6", ATTRS{idProduct}=="9221", ENV{ID_MM_DEVICE_IGNORE}="1" I tried commenting out the second line and restarting network-manager/modem-manager but it didn't help. I've no idea where to go from here, does anyone else have any ideas?

• Logitech USB headset not working on 12.04

  I've looked around for answers to this question, But none of them seem to work for my particular problem. Obviously my USB headset isn't working, But I might as well share the scenario. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and I have a Logitech USB headset. When I click my headset in either tab to use it, The changes are not remembered when I reopen the sound settings, the built-in audio is still used. Also when I select the headset in the Output tab, and click the Test Sound button to test everything, The sound still comes from my laptop's onboard audio, instead of from my USB headset. Does anyone know how to correct this? I am stumped.

• Oracle Tutor: *** CAUTION to Word .docx Users ***

  Microsoft released a security update KB969604 for Office 2007 (around June 2009) This update causes document variables within Word docx files to be scrambled. This update might still be pushed out via Office 2007 updates DO NOT save files as docx using MS OFFICE 2007 until you apply the MS hotfix # 970942 available here If you are using Windows XP with Office 2003 or Office 2000 and have installed an older Office 2007 compatibility pack, documents saved as docx may also cause the scrambled document variables. Installing the 2007 compatibility pack published on 1/6/2010 (version 4) will prevent the document variables from becoming corrupt. Those on Windows 2000 may not be able to install the latest compatibility pack, or the compatibility pack may not function properly. This situation will hopefully be rectified in the coming months. What is a document variable? Document variables store data inside the document, invisible to the user. The Tutor software uses them when converting the document to HTML and when creating the flowchart, just to name a couple of uses. How will you know if a document's variables are scrambled? The difficulty in diagnosing the issue is that the symptoms can take myriad forms. There isn't a single error message or a single feature that one can point to and say, "test for the problem by doing this." The best clue about the error is seeing any kind of string in an error message that has garbage characters, question marks, xml code snippets, or just nonsense. Such as "Language ?????????????xlr;lwlerkjl could not be found." It is also possible to see the corrupted data in the footers of the Word docs. And, just because the footers look correct does not mean that the document variables are not corrupted. The corruption problem does not occur in every document variable in the document, just some of them. Often it is less than a quarter of them. What is the difference between docx files and doc files? Office 2007 uses Office Open XML formats with .docx and .docm filename extensions. - Docx is an Office Open XML word document. - Docm is a macro enabled Office Open XML document. This means the file structure behind the scenes is quite different from the binary file formats used prior to Office 2007 such as .doc, .dot, .xls, and .ppt. • VLC Media Server

  We are using VLC on ubuntu, and trying to set up a streaming media server. We have the http interface working fine from remote computers, and we can also see the video playing as text if we don't screen VLC. Our problem is the output streaming. When we use the main VLC page you get when you goto the servers IP it does not save the output MRL (refreshing page it will go away, even after clicking save.) We tried to VLM page and it appears to work fine from the http page (it buffers, plays, timers go up when not paused, etc.) However, we still cannot connect remotely with a VLC client. The output parameters do save properly on the VLM page. We are noobs when it comes to this. Does anyone have a very to the point procedure of getting a file X to play and stream on ubuntu using VLC assuming VLC is installed?

• Does openssl errno 104 mean that SSLv2 is disabled?

  I want to check if my server has SSLv2 disabled. I am doing this by attempting to connect remotely with openssl with the following shell command. openssl s_client -connect HOSTNAME:443 -ssl2 Most literature I could find on the Internet says if I see something similar to the following error then SSLv2 is properly disabled. 29638:error:1407F0E5:SSL routines:SSL2_WRITE:ssl handshake failure:s2_pkt.c:428: I do get the above error when connecting to my Ubuntu server with SSLv2 disabled in Apache Apache but when I connect to my Windows Server 2008 R2 server with SSLv2 disabled in the registry I get the following output and error. CONNECTED(00000003) write:errno=104 I can't find any literature explaining this output and error. If anybody could explain to me if and why this output and error means that SSLv2 is properly disabled, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

  I'd like to connect to a wireless access point from the command-line. ideally, I'd only need the name of the AP. But the hardware-address would work as well. I know I can use nmcli to connect to a managed network connection, but in my case, the access point may not be configured for Network-Manager yet (See the difference between the output of nm-tool and nmcli con). An ideal solution would be to utilize Jackson to convert a json string into my data objects, but I don't get the impression that this is possible with binary data.

• Google Chrome not rendering webpages correctly

  I am facing some serious web page rendering issues with Chrome. It is more prominent during javascript based animations and stuff on websites like youtube. I have tried removing chrome using (sudo apt-get purge google-chrome-stable) and then reinstalling it. But the problems still persist. The same webpages work correctly on firefox on ubuntu and chrome on windows. The problem only shows up when I use chrome on ubuntu. I think the issue has started after I updated to the latest version of Chrome. I have used Chrome previously on this machine without any problems. I have attached a image that demonstrates the issue. What could possibly be the problem? • Bad DMA/do_IRQ errors on suspend/resume, with occasional freezing

  Every time I suspend or resume my laptop (Dell Latitude E6520, bought this year), I get 2 messages of the form displayed on the console just before shutting down/starting up: [ 407.107610] ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: dma_pool_free buffer-128, f6f18000/36f18000 (bad dma) On occasion, I get a message of the form: [ 3753.979066] do_IRQ: 0.177 No irq handler for vector (irq -1) On occasion, my machine freezes with a flashing Caps Lock button when suspending, after which I need to do a hard shutdown. This never happened before the messages started appearing (a while back), and I think it never happens without a do_IRQ message appearing (although I'm not sure about that). [There's nothing in the owner's manual on a flashing Caps Lock button; apparently it may be a kernel panic if the scroll lock also flashes, but the laptop doesn't have a scroll lock light, and there's no message on the console saying kernel panic.] Are these bad DMA/do IRQ messages serious, and what can I do to investigate/troubleshoot them and the freezing? • Cannot set monitor to native resolution

  problem is similar to so many other users, but solutions found do not work. Background: Fresh install of 12.04 (completely updated) on a Fit-PC2 (specs). Read in several places that the new 3.X kernel that 12.04 runs on has a new psb_gfx driver which supports the gma500 graphics card (poulsbo chipset). All's pretty much working (there are some glitches which are documented, so I won't raise them here), except for the screen resolution. My native monitor resolution is 1920X1080, but all I get is 1024x768. Output running xrandr: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 0.0* Although I read that Ubuntu does not come with an xorg.conf file anymore, I also tried running sudo X :1 -configure, and here's the end of the output: Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed. When I look in the xorg.conf.new file created in my home directory, it seems that for some reason X thinks I have two screens. Don't know what to do with that. Ideas anyone? • mpd conflicting with other applications -- taking control of pulse?

  Simple explanation If mpd is playing and sound attempts to play through another application, x, sound from x will not be output. If sound from another application, x, is playing and mpd then attempts to play, no sound will be output from mpd whilst sound from x continues to play. Details I first noticed this problem with Flash, and this continues to be the most common scenario. I posted a question about this before realising it was not strictly Flash-related, but instead is something to do with mpd. My biggest frustration comes from trying to get mpd working again, as I can't seem to pin down any method. Sometimes pulseaudio -k seems to help, other times sudo /etc/init.d/mpd restart, others killing Chromium (due to Flash) with SIGTERM. Most of the time it's a combination of the above. I think this might be because I run mpd as another user and use pulseaudio. It is not run as root or current user. Also, mpd is compiled with pulse support. I have tried numerous things, however I honestly couldn't recite what, as it has been some time since.   I have the following script that parses an HR output file looking for employees and outputs information such as Hire Dare, First Name, Last Name, Supervisor etc. The problem I have is that in the current format I think the Hire Date column is being treated as a string so in effect it orders the output by month (i.e. 1/1/01 comes before 2/2/98). Is there a way to map that column to a date/time so it sorts properly? • Ubuntu 9.10 x64 has no sound, while Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit does.

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 x64 recently. Up until now I've been on 32 bit Ubuntu. For the first time since installing it, I went and tried to play a Youtube video. There was no sound. So a quick test to the system reveals that nothing will play sound (And I've tried turning the volume too full, as some have said output is quite quiet, but there is no sound at all). Further research shows that in sound preferences, the only output device listed was Dummy Output. Why would it work in 9.04 x86 and not 9.10 x64? While booting up, and occasionally with the sound preferences dialog open, I get a loud click (even though it isn't recognising my sound card). It's a Dell Studio 17 laptop. I'm not sure what the exact model of sound card is.
