• Sharing password-protected videos on social media

  We are developing a site where users will be able to watch and download videos that they've recorded of themselves in a public event. The videos will be password protected, and will be available only to users who have paid for them at the event... ...But on the other hand, we also want users to share those videos on social media, since they will be an attractive publicity for our events. Having people log into our site with their password, download the video and then re-upload it to Youtube/Facebook will be too cumbersome, and I suspect that few users will be willing to do that. So the obvious alternative is to have one of those convenient "share" buttons, but the problem with that approach will be that: The video will be physically hosted (and linked to) in our site. What happens if those videos go viral and our bandwidth cost explodes? The video is password protected. The solution I've thought of for this is: Upload the user's video to our (password-protected site) and to Youtube at the same time, as an unlisted video. The user can access our site with his password and download his video (to watch on his TV or whatever). If the users hits the "share" button, we show him the Youtube link... and we turn the video into a listed one. This seems in line with the ideas in Using YouTube as a CDN, and there didn't seem to be any objections in that question. I'm posting this just to confirm that my idea doesn't violate any Youtube TOS, and also to see if it is a good one or there might be better alternatives.

• I have a very long and repetitive python path, where do I look to correct this?

  I know it is probably not necessary to paste the whole path, but just for the record I have done so below. Whenever I run a python command, it takes a long time to load this path I suppose.   I have a program that operates on a large set of experimental data. The data is stored as a list of objects that are instances of a class with the following attributes: time_point - the time of the sample cluster - the name of the cluster of nodes from which the sample was taken code - the name of the node from which the sample was taken qty1 = the value of the sample for the first quantity qty2 = the value of the sample for the second quantity I need to derive some values from the data set, grouped in three ways - once for the sample as a whole, once for each cluster of nodes, and once for each node. The values I need to derive depend on the (time sorted) cumulative sums of qty1 and qty2: the maximum value of the element-wise sum of the cumulative sums of qty1 and qty2, the time point at which that maximum value occurred, and the values of qty1 and qty2 at that time point. The first snippet above runs well for my initial dataset (on the order of a million records), but later datasets will have more records and clusters/nodes, so scalability is a concern. This is my first non-trivial use of Python, and I want to make sure I'm taking proper advantage of the language (this is replacing a very convoluted set of SQL queries, and earlier versions of the Python version were essentially very ineffecient straight transalations of what that did).   I thought I'd put together a quick script to consolidate the CSS rules I have distributed across multiple CSS files, then I can minify it. I'm new to Python but figured this would be a good exercise to try a new language. My main loop isn't parsing the CSS as I thought it would. I populate a list with selectors parsed from the CSS files to return the CSS rules in order. • How to prevent blocking http auth popups on firefox restart with many tabs open

  I am using the latest firefox with tab mix plus and tabgoups manager. I have maybe 50 or 100 tabs oben in different tab groups. When I shutdown firefox and start it again all tabs and tab groups are perfectly rebuilt. But I have also many pages open that are behind a standard http auth, and these pages all request their usernames and passwords. So during startup firefox pops up all these pages' http auth windows. And they block everything else in firefox, they are like modal windows. (I am involved in website development and the beta versions are behind apache http auth.) I have to click many times the OK button in the popups, before I can do anything. All the usernames and passwords are already filled in. (And the firefox taskbar entry blinks and the firefox window heading also blinks, and focus switches back and foth, which also annoys me. And sometimes the popups do not react to my clicks, because firefox is maybe just switching focus somewhere else. This is the worst.) I want a plugin or some way to skip those popups. There are some plugins I tried some time ago, but they did not do what I need, because they require a mouse click for each login, which is no improvement over the situation like it already is. This is not about password storage (because firefox already stores them). But of course, if some password storing plugin could heal this it would be great.

• Apache: redirect to https before AUTH for server-status

  I want to force https and basic auth for server-status output (mod_status). If I enable auth and user asks for http://site/server-status apache first asks for pass, then redirects to httpS, then asks for pass again. This question is similar to Apache - Redirect to https before AUTH and force https with apache before .htpasswd but I cannot get it work because we are speaking not about generic folder but Location structure. • Finding the current user authenticated by basic auth (Apache)

  When you log in through a basic auth page, is the username you authenticated as stored anywhere (on the server or client machine), maybe in an environment variable? Background: I have a common web administration page for an e-mail server and I'd like to know who is doing what. When a user successfully logs in via basic auth, I somehow want to be able to identify them and log their actions. So each time a request is submitted, I can write to a log file. The basic format would be: $username ran a $function against $useraccount so if a user changed someone's permissions, eg: Admin-Bob ran a permission change against User-Scott So if errors occur, I can easily trace back in the log file what actions lead to the cause. I tried checking the %ENV hash to no avail, any Ideas? I don't really want to get into PHP-like sessions, because that would mean scrapping my basic auth, which gives me a fine degree of control already. If I have to code something with sessions, I'd need to implement a system to block users after maximum tries and so on, which I don't really want to code. I think this is better geared towards serverfault because it pertains to Apache moreso than the programming language. Sessions can be done in a myriad of languages.

• SVN very slow over HTTP (seems auth related)

  I'm using SVN version 1.6.6 (r40053) via the command-line in Ubuntu 10.04 and connecting to a remote repository over HTTP that is in the local network. For a while, it worked fine, but has recently become very slow for any operation that requires communication with the repository, however it does eventually work after several minutes (~3m for svn up). Looking at Wireshark, it appears to be taking a full minute between the HTTP auth denied and the subsequent request containing credentials. The issue is local to my machine because other coworkers running Ubuntu are not having the issue and I've tried using my credentials from another machine and it was very fast. I tried deleting the .subversion folder in my home directory and checking everything out fresh, but it didn't help. Update: I think it's auth related. When I check out SVN repositories off of the Internet over HTTP (from Google Code, for example), everything is very fast until I do something that requires a password. Before prompting for the password for the first time, it stalls for at least a minute. Update 2: I set the neon-debug-mask in the SVN settings (in /etc/subversion/servers under [Global]) to 138 and it seems to spending a lot of time on 'auth: Trying Basic challenge...'

• FancyURLOpener failing since moving to python 3.1.2

  I had an application that was downloading a .CSV file from a password-protected website then processing it futher. I was using FancyURLOpener, and simply hardcoding the username and password. (Obviously, security is not a high priority in this particular instance). Since downloading Python 3.1.2, this code has stopped working. Does anyone know of the changes that have happened to the implementation? • Problem using easy_install on Windows 7, 64 bit. (cannot find python.exe)

  Hi, I have just now installed Python 2.6 on my Windows 7 (64 bit) Lenovo t61p laptop. I have downloaded Sphinx and nose and apparently installed them correctly using python setup.py install (at least no errors were reported during the installation). Now I am trying to install pymongo using easy_install but I am not having much success. It seems that easy_install isn't working at all. I execute easy_install as administrator: C:\>easy_install Cannot find Python executable C:\Program Files\Python26\python.exe The path C:\Program Files\Python26\python.exe is correct. I have found this bug report on bugs.python.org which seems to be related, although its status is 'Resolved'. Do you have any ideas as to what may be wrong? Any pointers, hints or tips for diagnosing the problem further would be greatly appreciated.   Nowadays your site is not in fashion if you don't show at least a couple of share buttons like these: Is this just fashion, or do people actually get something good out of it? When I say "something good" I mostly mean something that you could measure, and not just the feeling that was good. Maybe I can better explain with an example: did you notice (in some way) that many people clicked on those links to share your page/s on those web 2.0 social sites? And in such a case on which social networks did you see they mostly share your pages? BTW I'm not talking about Google PR, i know all web 2.0 social sites use nofollow everywhere and even hidden links, so they are useless by themselves for PR. UPDATE: According to this video, Google's Alter Ego says that they now use in some way data from social sites in ranking. If this is true, it's obvious that the Share on button for FB, Tweet, etc are definitely of some values. But again my question is more about what you noticed in your real experience to be a direct benefit of adding those type of "Share On" links on your webisite? I.e. did you see more traffic coming in form FB, or some users who bought your products because of FB or Twitter? Or any other benefits? Thanks

Help on class super in module builtins: class super(object) | super() -> same as super(__class__, <first argument>) | super(type) -> unbound super object | super(type, obj) -> bound super object; requires isinstance(obj, type) | super(type, type2) -> bound super object; requires issubclass(type2, type) Until now I've used super() only without arguments and it worked as expected (by a Java developer). Questions: What does "bound" mean in this context? What is the difference between bound and unbound super object? When to use super(type, obj) and when super(type, type2)? Would it be better to name the super class like in Mother.__init__(...)?

• Python: split files using mutliple split delimiters

  Hi, I have multiple CSV files which I need to parse in a loop to gather information. The problem is that while they are the same format, some are delimited by '\t' and others by ','. After this, I want to remove the double-quote from around the string. Can python split via multiple possible delimiters? At the minute, I can split the line with one by using: f = open(filename, "r") fields = f.readlines() for fs in fields: sf = fs.split('\t') tf = [fi.strip ('"') for fi in sf] Any suggestions are welcome.

• Python script repeated auto start up.

  I am designing a python web app, where people can have an email sent to them on a particular day. So a user puts in his emai and date in a form and it gets stored in my database. My script would then search through the database looking for all records of todays date, retrive the email, sends them out and deletes the entry from the table. Is it possible to have a setup, where the script starts up automatically at a give time, say 1 pm everyday, sends out the email and then quits? If I have a continuously running script, i might go over the CPU limit of my shared web hosting. Or is the effect negligible? Ali

  Does anybody know of a python module to parse a doxygen style C++ comment string? I mean a string like this (simple example): /** * A constructor. * A more elaborate description of the constructor. * @param param1 test1 * @param param2 test2 */ and I would like to extract the brief, the long description, the parameters, the return value etc. I'm currently doing this using string methods and regular expressions but my solution is not very robust. Alternatively does anybody know an easy to use parser lib that I can set up quickly? Thanks in advance

• Open payment gateway libraries for Java, Python, Ruby, and PHP

  I'm looking for generic and open source payment libraries that support many different payment processor APIs. In other words, I'd like to develop an application using a single payment processing API, but be able to easily switch between payment gateways, such as Authorize.Net, Payflow Pro, Braintree, PayPal, Google, Amazon, etc. This question gives some Java solutions, but the suggestions all look horrible. Isn't there anything more like ActiveMerchant for Java? I really need a good Java solution, to the point of building my own if necessary. But I don't want to reinvent the wheel if it exists. Are there any solutions for Python or PHP? Ideally, I'd like to find something similar to Ruby's ActiveMerchant, which looks exceptionally complete. Are there any other Ruby solutions?

  I ran across the caret operator in python today and trying it out, I got the following output: >>> 8^3 11 >>> 8^4 12 >>> 8^1 9 >>> 8^0 8 >>> 7^1 6 >>> 7^2 5 >>> 7^7 0 >>> 7^8 15 >>> 9^1 8 >>> 16^1 17 >>> 15^1 14 >>> It seems to be based on 8, so I'm guessing some sort of byte operation? I can't seem to find much about this searching sites other than it behaves oddly for floats, does anybody have a link to what this operator does or can you explain it here?
