  August 2012 issue of Profit is now available online. Way back in 2003, I wrote my first feature for Profit. It was titled “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Application Servers (But Were Afraid To Ask),” and it discussed “cutting-edge” technologies like portals and XML and the brand-new Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE; we’re now on Java EE 7).   As part of our current project the Build Management team asked for a solution to undeploy multiple composites at one time. Of course you have the “Undeploy All from This Partition” menu option in Enterprise Manager but since we have a lot of deployments every day the guys wanted to have a script solution. It is even more important for the nightly deployments on our continuous integration environment – strange, we couldn’t find anybody who wants to do the undeployment via Enterprise Manager manually every night ;-) However with WLST or ANT the SOA Suite comes with two options to undeploy composites via script. In this article I’d like to explain you both ways. Undeployment with WLST You can test the steps below on Oracle's Pre-built Virtual Machine for SOA Suite and BPM Suite 11g. • How can you Add Value to your Mobile Apps?

Inevitably, all companies want to improve the customer experience through more quality interactions that drive customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, new revenue streams, and even improve the way they service their customers. What better way than mobile apps? Right? But how can customers add more value to these mobile apps to drive more business benefit? Look closely, the answer just might be right in front of you. Still need another clue? What’s the first 4 letters of mobile – mo-bi? Or pronounced differently, More BI. That’s right – add more business intelligence to your overall mobile strategy. In today’s customer centric world where customer interactions and personalization are critical, it’s important to leverage a BI strategy that complements and feeds into your mobile strategy. For example, I was recently talking to a customer that was implementing a data warehouse project focused customer analytics. Their goal was to understand who are their best customers and why, develop customer profiles, identify customer trends & patterns, identify cross sell opportunities, and much more. The company then wanted to feed this information to marketing for targeted campaigns and programs. As we continued to talk, I asked my contact if they had plans to feed this information into their customer facing mobile apps to personalize the apps, target their interactions, and hopefully drive customer loyalty and new revenue streams? Two minutes later, my contact was calling his mobile development teams. So my advice to everyone, as you establish your enterprise mobile strategy and goals, remember that “mo-BI” is a critical component to add value to your mobile apps! So make sure you have “mo BI” in your mobile strategy. As I come to think of it, did you ever notice that Big Data also starts with BI?

• A case for not installing your own software

  This week I watched some of the Oracle Open World presentations (from the comfort of my Oracle office) and happened on some of Larry Ellison’s comments about cloud computing and engineered systems.  Larry said he sees the move to these as analogous to the moves made by the original adopters of electricity.  The argument goes that the first consumers of electricity had to set up their own power plant.  Then, as the market and infrastructure for electricity matured, power consumers moved from using their own personal power plant to purchasing power from another entity that was focused on power production as their primary product. In the end this was a cheaper and more reliable solution. Now, there are lots of compelling reasons to be looking very seriously at cloud computing and engineered systems for enterprise application deployment.  However, speaking as a software developer of enterprise applications, the part of this that I really love (besides Larry’s early electricity adopter analogy) is that as a mode of application deployment it provides me and my customers a consistent environment in which the applications I am providing will be run.  This cuts way down on the environmental surprises that consistently lead to the hated “well, it works here” situation with the support desk. And just to be clear, I think I hate this situation more than my clients, who I think are happy that at least it is working somewhere.  I hate this because when a problem happens, and let’s face it customers are not wasting their time calling in easy problems, we are seriously disabled when we cannot reproduce the issue which is triggered by something unforeseen in the environment where the application is running.  This situation is incredibly frustrating and an all too often occurrence. I look selfishly forward to cloud computing and engineered systems dramatically reducing the occurrence of problems triggered by unforeseen environmental situations in the software I am responsible for.  I think this is an evolutionary game changer that will be a huge benefit to the reliability and consistent performance of the software for my customers, and may make “well, it works here” a well forgotten phase for future software developers. It may even impact the stress squeeze toy industry.  Well, maybe at least for my group.

• Flashback Data Archives: Ein gutes Gedächtnis für DBA und Entwickler

  Daten werden gespeichert und zum Teil lange aufbewahrt. Mitunter werden Daten nach ihrer ersten Speicherung geändert, vielleicht sogar mehrfach. Je nach gesetzlicher oder betrieblicher Vorgabe müssen die Veränderungen sogar nachverfolgbar sein. Damit sind zugleich Mechanismen gefordert, die sicherstellen, dass die Folge der Versionen lückenlos ist. Und implizit bedeutet das zusätzlich, dass die Versionen auch vor Löschen und Verändern geschützt sein müssen. Das Versionieren kann über die Anwendung, mit der die Daten auch erfasst werden, erfolgen, über Trigger oder über besondere Werkzeuge. Jede dieser Lösungen hat ihre eigenen Schwächen. Zusätzlich steht die Frage nach dem Schutz vor unerlaubtem Löschen oder Ändern versionierter Daten im Raum. Flashback Data Archives lösen diese Frage, denn sie bieten nicht nur einen wirksamen Mechanismus zum Versionieren von Datensätzen, sondern sie schützen diese Versionen auch vor Veränderung und löschen sie schließlich sogar automatisch nach Ablauf ihrer Aufbewahrungsfrist.Ursprünglich wurden die Archive als eigenständige Option zur Enterprise Edition der Oracle Database 11g unter dem Namen Total Recall eingeführt. Ende Juni 2012 verloren die Flashback Data Archives ihren Status als eigenständige Option. Weil die Archive aber grundsätzlich komprimiert wurden, hat Oracle sie stattdessen zu einem Feature der Advanced Compression Option der Enterprise Edition (ACO) gemacht. Seit der Version 11.2.0.4 der Datenbank ist das Komprimieren aber für die Archive nicht mehr zwangsläufig, sondern optional. Damit gibt es lizenzrechtlich erneut eine Änderung: Wer die Kompression verwendet, der muss nach wie vor ACO lizensieren. Wer die Flashback Data Archives dagegen ohne Kompression verwendet - also zum Beispiel Entwickler -, dem stehen sie ab 11.2.0.4 aufwärts im Lieferumfang aller Editionen der Datenbank zur Verfügung. Diese Änderung ist in den Handbüchern zur Lizensierung der Versionen 11.2 und 12.1 der Datenbank dokumentiert.   Moooooooo     For a while now we’ve been using Apple’s enterprise device app distribution mechanism.   This allows you to have a user, click on a URL on their iOS device and it pulls down a new version of an enterprise app. of of our servers. Its really nice,  have a look at - http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/FA_Wireless_Enterprise_App_Distribution/Introduction/Introduction.html   I’ve embedded this, into a check on application launch, that a web-service is called to detect a newer version of the software is available.  It then calls the URL to the App and a new version is deployed. You can alert users that a new App update is available by sending them a push notification.  See screenshot at the top. We send our push notifications out to users,  using a simple C# service.    The fun part is this.   You can instruct the push notification to play a sound (embedded in the app already). So our push notification’s play a random farmyard noise, i.e from a selection of - cow.wav dogbrk.wav duck.wav goose.wav horse.wav lamb.wav monkey.wav – left field I know rooster.wav Imagine my amusement being able to periodically send out an update and watch our office (of about 60 people) turn into farm for a few seconds. I’ve messed up a few times, with people being interrupted on customer conference calls,  but people seem good humoured about it. (so far) Simple(ish) pleasures…

Especially with respect to libraries. Where might you embed lua for application scripting versus python. Where would you use Java vs C#. Which languages do different scientists use? Also which languages have libraries for these subniches? Things like bioperl/scipy/Incanter. Please no flamewars about how nice each language or environment is. This is where they used.   Wie können extrem lange Transaktionen durchgeführt werden, also Transaktionen, die Datensätze über Stunden oder Tage exklusiv sperren, ohne dass diese langen Transaktionen 'normale' Transaktionen auf diesen Datensätzen behindern? Solche langen Transakionen sind zum Beispiel im Spatial Umfeld keine Seltenheit. Wie können unterschiedliche historische Zustände von Produktionsdaten online zeitlich unbegrenzt vorgehalten werden? Die UNDO Daten, die das gesamte Änderungsvolumen einer Datenbank vorhalten, gewährleisten in der Regel nur einen zeitlich sehr limitierten Zugriff auf 'ältere' Daten. Und die Technologie der database archives, auch bekannt unter dem Namen Total Recall, erlaubt einerseits keine Änderungen an den älteren Daten und steht andererseits ausschließlich in der Enterprise Edition der Datenbank zur Verfügung. Wie kann man die aktuellsten Produktionsdaten für WHAT-IF-Analysen verändern und währenddessen andere Benutzer ungestört auf den Originaldaten weiterarbeiten lassen? Ein SET TRANSACTION READ ONLY erlaubt keinerlei Änderungen und ist ebenfalls begrenzt auf die 'Reichweite' der UNDO Informationen. Zwar könnte man für derartige Analysen eine Datenbankkopie aus dem Backup aufbauen oder eine Standby Lösung implementieren, aber das ist doch eher aufwändig. Es gibt eine verblüffend einfache Antwort auf diese scheinbar komplizierten Fragen. Sie heisst Oracle Database Workspace Manager oder kurz Workspace Manager (WM). Der WM ist ein Feature der Datenbank seit Oracle9i, das sowohl in der Standard als auch in der Enterprise Edition zur Verfügung steht. Anders als in den ersten Versionen ist er längst auch Bestandteil jeder Installation. Um so erstaunlicher ist es, dass so wenige Kunden ihn kennen. Dieser Tipp soll dazu beitragen, das zu ändern.

With the Cumulative Feature Overview Tool, you can quickly and easily find information about new features for each EPM System product. Defects Fixed Finder Tool This new tool provides an efficient way to review the defects fixed in patch set updates, patch set exceptions, and patch sets for major releases, starting with Release 11.1.1. The tool helps you plan patch implementations by providing concise descriptions of defects fixed after your current release. The Defects Fixed Finder enables you to easily find information about defects fixed for each EPM System product.

  The Oracle Application Development Framework (Oracle ADF) is an end-to-end application framework that builds on Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) standards and open-source technologies. You can use Oracle ADF to implement enterprise solutions that search, display, create, modify, and validate data using web, wireless, desktop, or web services interfaces. Because of its declarative nature, Oracle ADF simplifies and accelerates development by allowing users to focus on the logic of application creation rather than coding details. Used in tandem, Oracle JDeveloper 11g and Oracle ADF give you an environment that covers the full development lifecycle from design to deployment, with drag-and-drop data binding, visual UI design, and team development features built in. In line with community best practices, applications you build using the Fusion web technology stack achieve a clean separation of business logic, page navigation, and user interface by adhering to a model-view-controller architecture. MVC architecture: The model layer represents the data values related to the current page The view layer contains the UI pages used to view or modify that data The controller layer processes user input and determines page navigation The business service layer handles data access and encapsulates business logic Each ADF module fits in the Fusion web application architecture. The core module in the framework is ADF Model, a data binding facility. The ADF Model layer enables a unified approach to bind any user interface to any business service, without the need to write code. The other modules that make up a Fusion web application technology stack are: ADF Business Components, which simplifies building business services. ADF Faces rich client, which offers a rich library of AJAX-enabled UI components for web applications built with JavaServer Faces (JSF). ADF Controller, which integrates JSF with ADF Model. The ADF Controller extends the standard JSF controller by providing additional functionality, such as reusable task flows that pass control not only between JSF pages, but also between other activities, for instance method calls or other task flows.

• ADF Essentials - Available for free and certified on GlassFish!

  If you are an Oracle customer, you are probably familiar with Oracle ADF (Application Development Framework). If you are not, ADF is, in a nutshell, a Java EE based framework that simplifies the development of enterprise applications. It is the development framework that was used, among other things, to build Oracle Fusion Applications. Oracle has just released ADF Essentials, a free to develop and deploy version of Oracle ADF's core technologies. As a good news never come alone, GlassFish 3.1.2 is now a certified container for ADF Essentials! ADF Essentials leverage core ADF features and includes: Oracle ADF Faces - a set of more than 150 JSF 2.0 rich components that simplify the creation of rich Web user interfaces (charting, data vizualization, advanced tables, drag and drop, touch gesture support, extensive windowing capabilities, etc.) Oracle ADF Controller - an extension of the JSF controller that helps build reusable process flows and provides the ability to create dynamic regions within Web pages. Oracle ADF Binding - an XML-based, meta-data abstraction layer to connect user interfaces to business services. Oracle ADF Business Components – a declaratively-configured layer that simplifies developing business services against relational databases by providing reusable components that implement common design patterns. ADF is a highly declarative framework, it has always had a very good tooling support. Visual development for Oracle ADF Essentials is provided in Oracle JDeveloper 11.1.2.3. Eclispe support is planned for a later OEPE (Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse) release.
