  • Best language on Linux to replace manual tasks that use SSH/Telnet? [on hold]

    - by Calab
    I've been tasked to create and maintain a web browser based interface to replace several of the manual tasks that we perform now. I currently have a "shakey" but working program written in Perl (2779 lines) that uses basic Expect coding, but it has some limitations that require a great deal of coding to get around. Because of this I am going to do a complete rewrite and want to do it "right" this time. My question is this... What would be the best language to use to create a web based interface to perform SSH/Telnet tasks that we would normally do manually? Keep in mind the following requirements: Runs on a CentOS Linux system v5.10 Http will be served by Apache2 This is an INTRANET site and only accessible within our organization. User load will be light. No more that 5 users accessing it at one time. perl 5.8.8, php 5.3.3, python 2.7.2 are available... Not sure what other languages to check for, or what modules might be installed in each language. The web interface will need to provide progress indicators and text output produced by the remote connection, in real time as it is generated. If we are running our process on multiple hosts, they should be in individual threads so that they can run side by side, not sequentially. I want the ability to "trap" on specific text generated by the remote host and display an alert to the user - such as when the remote host generates an error message. I would like to avoid as much client side scripting (javascript/vbscript) as I can. Most users will be on Windows PC's using Chrome or IE as a browser. Users will be downloading the resulting output so they can process it as they see fit. I currently have no experience with "Ajax" or the like. Most of my coding experience is old 6809 assembly, Visual Basic 6, and whatever I can cut/paste from online examples in various languages (hence my "shaky" Perl program) My coding environment is Eclipse for remote code editing, but I prefer stuff like UltraEdit if I can get a decent syntax file for the language I'm using. I do have su access on the server, but I'm not the only one using this server so I can't just upgrade/install blindly as I might impact other software currently running on the machine. One reason that I'm asking here, instead of searching (which I did) is that most replies were, "use language 'xyz', but you need to use an external SSH connection" - like I'm using Expect in my Perl script. Most also did not agree on what language that 'xyz' should be. ...so, after this long posting, can someone offer some advice?

  • How to make a loop over all keys of a HashMap?

    - by Roman
    I try to do it in the following way: public String getValue(String service, String parameter) { String inputKey = service + ":" + parameter; Set keys = name2value.keySet(); Iterator itr = keys.iterator(); while (itr.hasNext()) { if (inputKey.equal(itr.next())) { return name2value.get(inputKey); } return ""; } } And I get an error message: cannot find symbol method.equal(java.lang.Object). I think it is because itr.next() is not considered as a string. How can I solve this problem? I tried to replace Set keys by Set<String> keys. It did not help.

  • Log out of an SSH session into Erlang VM without stopping the VM or leaving stale processes

    - by Garret Smith
    I have an Erlang application running as a daemon, configured as an SSH server. I can connect to it with an SSH client and I get the standard Erlang REPL. If I 'q().' I shut down the Erlang VM, not the connection. If I close the connection ('~.' for OpenSSH, close the window in PuTTY) some processes remain under the sshd_sup/ssh_system_xx_sup tree. These appear to be stale shell processes. I do not see any exported function in the shell module that would let me shut down the shell (and therefore the SSH connection) without affecting the entire VM. How should I be logging out of the SSH session to not leave stale processes in the VM?

  • Are Multi-column Primary Keys in MySQL a optimisation problem?

    - by David
    Been looking into using multi-column primary keys and as performance is extremely important with the size of traffic and database I need to know if there is anything to consider before I start throwing out the unique ID method on many of my tables and start using mulit column primary keys. So, what are the performance/optimisation pros/cons to using multi column primary keys versus a basic single column, auto-inc primary key?

  • How can I setup a svn subdomain so I can checkin/out without using svn+ssh?

    - by Martin
    I have a svn repository on my hosting account at ~/repository/. At the moment I have to create ssh keys to my server for users to checkin/out from the repository using a command like "svn+ssh://domain.com/project1/trunk". This is fine when there were 2 of us using the repository but now I have other people that might be doing work on the server that I cannot fully trust, hence I cannot give them ssh keys as then they will have access to my entire server. I would like to setup access to my svn repository via a subdomain e.g. svn.domain.com, so that users can checkin/out from this location using a command like: "svn co http://svn.domain.com/project1/trunk" - without using ssh. Can this be done and how? This should also help me solve my other issue of managing which users have access to which svn projects. Thanks for any help in advance!

  • python: a way to get an exhaustive, sorted list of keys in a nested dictionary?

    - by saidimu
    exhaustive: - all keys in the dictionary, even if the keys are in a nested dictionary that is a value to a previous-level dictionary key. sorted: - this is to ensure the keys are always returned in the same order The nesting is arbitrarily deep. A non-recursive algorithm is preferred. level1 = { 'a' : 'aaaa', 'level2_1' : {'b': 'bbbbb', 'level3': {'c': 'cccc', 'd': 'dddddd'} }, 'level2_2' : { 'z': 'zzzzzzz' } }

  • MSDN / TechNet Key Importer for KeePass 2

    - by Stacy Vicknair
    If you have an MSDN account and, like me, systematically claim keys just as well as you systematically forget which keys you’ve used in which test environments! Well, in a meager attempt to help myself track my keys I created an importer for KeePass 2 that takes in the XML document that you can export from MSDN and TechNet. The source is available at https://github.com/svickn/MicrosoftKeyImporterPlugin.   How do I get my KeysExport.xml from MSDN or TechNet? Easy! First, in MSDN, go to your product keys. From there, at the top right select Export to XML. This will let you download an XML file full of your Microsoft Keys.   How do I import it into KeePass 2? The instructions are simple and available in the GitHub ReadMe.md, so I won’t repeat them. Here is a screenshot of what the imported result looks like:   As you can see, the import process creates a group called Microsoft Product Keys and creates a subgroup for each product. The individual entries each represent an individual key, stored in the password field. The importer decides if a key is new based on the key stored in the password, so you can edit the notes or title for the individual entries however you please without worrying about them being overwritten or duplicated if you re-import an updated KeysExport.xml from MSDN! This lets you keep track of where those pesky keys are in use and have the keys available anywhere you can access your KeePass database!   Technorati Tags: KeePass,KeePass 2,MSDN,TechNet

  • Jumping Physics

    With simplicity, how can I make a basic jump without the weird bouncing? It jumps like 2 pixels and back Here's what I use y += velY x += velX then keypresses MAX_SPEED = 180; falling = true; if(Gdx.input.isKeyPressed(Keys.W)) {//&& !jumped && !p.falling) { p.y += 20; } if(!Gdx.input.isKeyPressed(Keys.W)) p.velY = 0; if(Gdx.input.isKeyPressed(Keys.D)) p.velX = 5; if(!Gdx.input.isKeyPressed(Keys.D) && !(Gdx.input.isKeyPressed(Keys.A))) p.velX = 0; if(Gdx.input.isKeyPressed(Keys.A)) p.velX = -5; if(!Gdx.input.isKeyPressed(Keys.A) && !(Gdx.input.isKeyPressed(Keys.D))) p.velX = 0; if(p.falling == true || p.jumping == true) { p.velY -= 2; } if(p.velY > MAX_SPEED) p.velY = MAX_SPEED; if(p.velX > MAX_SPEED) p.velX = MAX_SPEED;

  • Strange PHP reference bug

    - by Roland Soós
    Hello, I have a really strange bug with my PHP code. I have a recursive code which build up a menu tree with object and one of my customers server can't make it work. Contructor: function Menu(&$menus, &$keys , &$parent, &$menu){ ... if($keys === NULL){ $keys = array_keys($menus); } ... for($x = 0; $x < count($keys); $x++) { var_dump($keys); $menu = $menus[$keys[$x]]; var_dump($keys); if($this->id == $menu->pid){ $keys[$x] = NULL; $this->submenus[] = new Menu($menus, $keys, $this, $menu); } } First var_dump give me back the array, the second give back the first element of $menus. Do you have any idea what causes this? PHP version 5.2.3

  • Why doesn't pppd over ssh work here? Why can't I kill pppd?

    - by Peter V. Mørch
    I'm trying to setup a simple ppp tunnel over ssh. It works on several machines just fine. But on one machine, pppd gets "stuck": > pgrep pppd | xargs ps up USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 4178 0.0 0.1 3020 1088 pts/1 Ds+ 05:28 0:00 /usr/sbin/pppd Any attempt to kill it (even sudo kill -9 4178) has no effect that I can see. strace -p 4178 also hangs similarly. After it has been started for a while, I start getting messages in dmesg like shown below. It is started like so from another machine: ssh -t root@server /usr/sbin/pppd passive noauth When I do this to one of the machines that work, the remote end's pppd spits out garbage/binary data to the console (as expected). When I do it to the one that fails, I get no output from pppd, but the ssh session eventually times out. If I instead ssh to the machine, and then run /usr/sbin/pppd passive noauth in a separate step I also get the expected binary output. I now have a couple of questions: What could be up with the one machine where pppd fails? I don't even know where to start looking... What could be the difference between ssh -t root@server /usr/sbin/pppd passive noauth in a single step and ssh root@server and /usr/sbin/pppd passive noauth in two steps? How can it be that I can't kill the process even with sudo kill -9? The only way I know is to reboot. (I've tried searching for something similar but didn't get anywhere so I'm sorry I don't have any more leads) Any ideas? The problem machine runs in debian on VMware "hardware" (as do the ones that work) and it exhibits the problem when cloned and on both debian lenny (original) and squeeze (after upgrade) dmesg entries: [ 1198.727248] INFO: task pppd:4178 blocked for more than 120 seconds. • How can I program the function keys on my MacBook?

    - by mrdatabase
    I'd like to assign basic tasks to the function keys (or other keys if it's easier) on my MacBook. For example I'd like the following to happen when F1 (or whatever key) is pressed: Launch Safari Open a new window Navigate to some specified site Another example could be: Launch Xcode Open some specific project I've experimented with the Automator for things like re-naming dozens of files in a particular directory but I don't know where to start for the above examples.

  • How to set up a linux user that can only access a repository via ssh?

    - by GJ
    I have a mercurial repository on a secure server, to which I want to grant secure access to an external user. I added for him a user account and publickey ssh authentication so that now he could push/pull changesets via ssh. My question is: how can I make this new user account completely disabled from doing anything or accessing any data on the server other than accessing the repository? E.g. he shouldn't even have the possibility to enter an interactive shell session. Thanks

  • Implementation of ZipCrypto / Zip 2.0 encryption in java

    - by gomesla
    I'm trying o implement the zipcrypto / zip 2.0 encryption algoritm to deal with encrypted zip files as discussed in http://www.pkware.com/documents/casestudies/APPNOTE.TXT I believe I've followed the specs but just can't seem to get it working. I'm fairly sure the issue has to do with my interpretation of the crc algorithm. The documentation states CRC-32: (4 bytes) The CRC-32 algorithm was generously contributed by David Schwaderer and can be found in his excellent book "C Programmers Guide to NetBIOS" published by Howard W. Sams & Co. Inc. The 'magic number' for the CRC is 0xdebb20e3. The proper CRC pre and post conditioning is used, meaning that the CRC register is pre-conditioned with all ones (a starting value of 0xffffffff) and the value is post-conditioned by taking the one's complement of the CRC residual. Here is the snippet that I'm using for the crc32 public class PKZIPCRC32 { private static final int CRC32_POLYNOMIAL = 0xdebb20e3; private int crc = 0xffffffff; private int CRCTable[]; public PKZIPCRC32() { buildCRCTable(); } private void buildCRCTable() { int i, j; CRCTable = new int[256]; for (i = 0; i <= 255; i++) { crc = i; for (j = 8; j > 0; j--) if ((crc & 1) == 1) crc = (crc >>> 1) ^ CRC32_POLYNOMIAL; else crc >>>= 1; CRCTable[i] = crc; } } private int crc32(byte buffer[], int start, int count, int lastcrc) { int temp1, temp2; int i = start; crc = lastcrc; while (count-- != 0) { temp1 = crc >>> 8; temp2 = CRCTable[(crc ^ buffer[i++]) & 0xFF]; crc = temp1 ^ temp2; } return crc; } public int crc32(int crc, byte buffer) { return crc32(new byte[] { buffer }, 0, 1, crc); } } Below is my complete code. Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong. package org.apache.commons.compress.archivers.zip; import java.io.IOException; import java.io.InputStream; public class ZipCryptoInputStream extends InputStream { public class PKZIPCRC32 { private static final int CRC32_POLYNOMIAL = 0xdebb20e3; private int crc = 0xffffffff; private int CRCTable[]; public PKZIPCRC32() { buildCRCTable(); } private void buildCRCTable() { int i, j; CRCTable = new int[256]; for (i = 0; i <= 255; i++) { crc = i; for (j = 8; j > 0; j--) if ((crc & 1) == 1) crc = (crc >>> 1) ^ CRC32_POLYNOMIAL; else crc >>>= 1; CRCTable[i] = crc; } } private int crc32(byte buffer[], int start, int count, int lastcrc) { int temp1, temp2; int i = start; crc = lastcrc; while (count-- != 0) { temp1 = crc >>> 8; temp2 = CRCTable[(crc ^ buffer[i++]) & 0xFF]; crc = temp1 ^ temp2; } return crc; } public int crc32(int crc, byte buffer) { return crc32(new byte[] { buffer }, 0, 1, crc); } } private static final long ENCRYPTION_KEY_1 = 0x12345678; private static final long ENCRYPTION_KEY_2 = 0x23456789; private static final long ENCRYPTION_KEY_3 = 0x34567890; private InputStream baseInputStream = null; private final PKZIPCRC32 checksumEngine = new PKZIPCRC32(); private long[] keys = null; public ZipCryptoInputStream(ZipArchiveEntry zipEntry, InputStream inputStream, String passwd) throws Exception { baseInputStream = inputStream; // Decryption // ---------- // PKZIP encrypts the compressed data stream. Ok, so if I have two Linux Machines (A and B) and I have a program on one, and want to run it on be I do: user@LinuxA:~$ ssh -X LinuxB user@LinuxB:~$ programName (Displays on LinuxA machine) Ok same thing, WindowsA LinuxB (Program on Linux) Start Xming X Server on Windows Run Putty, use x11 port forward with :0.0 After connect to LinuxB, run program, it loads in Windows! Now here is the question, WindowsA LinuxB, (Program on Windows) Run Windows Program On Linux, using a windows resources. How to make it work? BTW, I know it can because years ago, I read a white paper on it, but never actually tested it out.

  • Is there anyone with an Thinkpad Edge E320 with working Fn-Keys?

    - by Wauzl
    I recently bought a new Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E320. I'm having trouble with my Fn-Keys. The ones for Sound, Brightness and MUltimedia work but those that toggle Wifi/Bluetooth, Webcam and Microphone on and off won't. Fortunately the Wifi, Webcam and Mic are enabled by default. My problem is that I can't disable them (which would be nice to know that this works) and that I can't enable Bluetooth. (I checked that my machine has bluetooth support) Can't say if it would work in Windows as I purchased a machine without Windows. Here is my dmesg: http://pastebin.com/gAgYeDG7 Thanks for reading :)

  • Safest way (i.e. HTTPS, POST, PGP) to send decryption keys through the web?

    - by theGreenCabbage
    I am in the final stages of development for my Revit plugin. This plugin is programmed in C#, and distributed via a DLL. One of the DLLs is an encrypted SQLite database (with proprietary data) that is in the form of a DLL. Currently, in development stages, the decryption key for the SQLite database is hardcoded in my main DLL (the program's DLL). For distribution, since DLLs are easily decompilable, I am in need of a new method to decrypt the DLL. My solution is to send our decryption keys from our servers securely to the host's computer. I was looking in POST, thinking it was more secure than GET, but upon research, it appears it's similarly insecure, only more "obscure" than GET. I also looked into HTTPS, but Hostgator requires extra money for HTTPS use. I am in need of some advice - are there any custom solutions I can do to implement this?

  • Why do control keys (ctrl, shift, alt) not work sometimes?

    - by EricSchaefer
    Sometimes (about once a week) the control keys (ctrl, shift, alt) so not work anymore. They do work when I boot up, but after a while they stop working. Logging out and in again repairs it. What can cause something like that? Edit: It just happened again. Incidentally it happened right after vmware-player crashed just as the last time. Coincidence? Edit: It is a laptop keyboard (HP EliteBook 8730w) with german layout.

  • Why can`t we treat SSL Certs like Pgp keys instead of trusting CAs?

    - by yarun can
    I am dumb and stupid and I do not know all the technical aspects of SSL and server/client side implications and implementations. However I understand them good enough from user point of view to use SSL and encyrption daily. I was thinking that how silly it is to trust some unknown/known CAs when it comes to our our certificates for our servers. There had been many cases of misconduct, misuse, compromises and theft of certificates/ca keys from those places. On top of those known issues we also have to pay these guys regularly. I am wondering why can not we use/treat web server certificates like we use our pgp keys? So I sign a SSL certificate and send to a central server. And then each user accessing my site checks the validity and the keys from some central server (like pgp key servers). Is this a stupid idea? If so what could be a better idea than current system of issuing valid certificates. I am looking for a better than more secure idea. Naturally this is not a solution to an existing problem, rather it will be a hypothetical solution for some future implementation of a currently messed up web of trust on the internet due to recent news about NSA and their criminal buddies around the world. thanks

  • How can I have puppet deploy ssh keys for virtual users?

    - by Pheezy
    I am trying to get puppet to assign authorized ssh keys for virtual users but I keep getting the following error: err: Could not retrieve catalog: Could not parse for environment production: Syntax error at 'user'; expected '}' at /etc/puppet/modules/users/manifests/ssh_authorized_keys.pp:9 I believe my configuration are correct (listed below) but is there a syntax error or scoping issue I am missing? I would simply like to assign users to nodes and have those users automagically have their ssh keys installed. Is there maybe a better way to do this and I'm just overthinking it? # /etc/puppet/modules/users/virtual.pp class user::virtual { @user { "user": home => "/home/user", ensure => "present", groups => ["root","wheel"], uid => "8001", password => "SCRAMBLED", comment => "User", shell => "/bin/bash", managehome => "true", } # /etc/puppet/modules/users/manifests/ssh_authorized_keys.pp ssh_authorized_key { "user": ensure => "present", type => "ssh-dss", key => "AAAAB....", user => "user", } # /etc/puppet/modules/users/init.pp import "users.pp" import "ssh_authorized_keys.pp" class user::ops inherits user::virtual { realize( User["user"], ) } # /etc/puppet/manifests/modules.pp import "sudo" import "users" # /etc/puppet/manifests/nodes.pp node basenode { include sudo } node 'testbox' inherits basenode { include user::ops } # /etc/puppet/manifests/site.pp import "modules" import "nodes" # The filebucket option allows for file backups to the server filebucket { main: server => 'puppet' } # Set global defaults - including backing up all files to the main filebucket and adds a global path File { backup => main } Exec { path => "/usr/bin:/usr/sbin/:/bin:/sbin" }

  • How to remap Fn key combinations (Lenovo G500)

    - by Anatoli
    I am running Kubuntu 13.10 on a Lenovo G500 laptop. My question is similar to this one: How can I remap my F keys on my HP laptop? That is to say, my F1-F12 keys are mapped to certain special functions, and only holding down the Fn key restores access to the standard F1-F12 keys. How do I remap certain keys? I would like to know if there is a way to remap Fx to Fn+Fx and vice-versa. As per the instructions of #87043 I checked my BIOS and there is no option to switch the Fx/Fn key functionality. Googling through Leonovo's support forums indicates a BIOS update enabling this is in the works, but there's no indication of when it will be complete. Using xev I was able to see what X sees when F1-F12 are pressed. Some send separate keycodes, but some are somehow mapped to key combinations or other unknown things: F1 - XF86AudioMute F2 - XF86AudioVolumeLower F3 - XF86AudioVolumeRaise F4 - Alt_L + F4 F5 - F5 F6 - Disables touchapd, cannot quite understand what xev tells me is happening, reenables if disabled (Kernel log reveals these have well-defined scancodes not assigned to any keycodes) F7 - XF86WLAN F8 - Alt_L + Ctrl_L + Tab F9 - Turns off LCD backlight, xev sees nothing F10 - Super_L + p F11 - XF86MonBrightnessLower F12 - XF86MonBrightnessRaise Following the instrusctions on this page: How do I remap certain keys? I remapped all the keys that have definite keycodes (F1, F2, F3, F5, F7, F11, F12) This still leaves the F4, F6, F8, F9, F10 keys not functioning properly. This is especially frustarting since F4, F6, F9 now kill the current window, the touchpad and screen, respectively. Any help on remapping these keys to their proper functions would be much appreciated! -Anatoli xev output for these 5 keys: F4 KeyPress event, serial 40, synthetic NO, window 0x4800001, root 0x9d, • Why are the proposed BADSIG (on apt-get update) fixes secure?

    - by EvanED
    I'm running apt-get update, and I see errors like W: GPG error: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <[email protected]> It's not hard to find instructions on how to fix these problems, for instance by asking for the new keys with apt-key adv --recv-keys or rebuilding the cache; so I'm not asking about how to fix these. But why is this the right thing to do? Why is "oh, I need new keys? Cool, go get new keys" not just defeating the purpose of having a signed repository in the first place? Are the keys signed by a master key that apt-key checks? Should we be doing some additional validation to ensure that we're getting legitimate keys?
