• How can I detect hard drive failures?

  I am in charge of a large number of Windows servers. Recently, many have been reporting hard drive errors with event codes 11 and 55. CHKDSK indicates that the drives are fine most of the time. What other diagnostic tools could I use to more accurately detect hard drive failures? Could these Windows events be false positives? I have already evaluated S.M.A.R.T., and it seems to have significant sensitivity and specificity issues.

  I was trying to download Oracle Database (10g and 11g). On webpage of oracle there are links, however they give me 404 when I accept OTN license and try to download. I googled around and found forum with users reporting the same issue and the workaround was to change the url of download link from download.oracle.com/... to download download-uk.oracle.com/... however this does not work either, is there any mirror that is working at the moment?

  We backup a set of virtual machines to an external USB drive using rsync -a. The source directory is 145G as reported by du -sh, but the target is reporting 181G. The two file systems are ext3 and the block size is the same, so can someone explain what the discrepancy is?

• Will installing the CCCP make any difference in MKV handling in Win7/WMP12?

  I've found that MKV files play just fine on WMP12 (Win 7 64-bit). However, no thumbnails for such files are there and in the information panel at the bottom, no information about the length of the video is shown. I wonder if installing CCCP would fix these 2 issues and/or improve the playability of MKV even further. Or do I not need that pack? What do you think?

• Users take over a minute to log onto a 2008 windows server. LSM.exe running at 100MB+ memory.

  We've a 64bit Windows Server 2008 running Remote Desktop. The application lsm.exe (the local session manager) appears to be leaking memory. Although the memory usage is quite low when the server is rebooted, this continues to climb until people can no longer log in. The server has no audio card and does not have any AV software installed. The server is fully service packed. (Service pack 2) What could be causing this, and how would I fix it?

  I have pack of .avi files that needs to be trimmed by 5 last seconds. I'm doing it using batch processing and naturally, they all have different length so I can't set a trim from the beginning. I know FFMpeg has commands -t and -ss as well as Mencoder has -endpos and -ss, but in my case I don't know if I can use them this way. Is it better to give each server a specific function or make them all duplicates and split the traffic between them?   When using Windows 7N and embedded videos for YouTube and the like my users have been getting a black box. I tracked this down to when HTML5 is being used for rendering. Other than putting a bunch of sites in compatibility mode or installing the Windows Media Pack (which resolves this issue) is there another route I can take? My guess is it's only a single registry key or DLL that says 'I'm not HTML5 compatible' but I don't have any idea how to find it.
