• Document Management System - Where to Store Files?

  Hey, stack! I'm on charge of building an ASP.NET MVC Document Management System. It have to be able to do basic document management tasks like adding, editing and searching entries and also perform versioning. Anyways, I'm targeting PDF, Office and many image formats as the file attached to each document entry in the database. My question is: What design guidelines do pros follow when building the storage mechanism? Do they store the document files in the file system? Database? How file uploading is handled? I used to upload the files to a temporal location while the user was editing the data and move it to permanent storage when the user confirmed the entry creation. Is this good? Any suggestions on improvement?

  We have setup a .net application developed with .net framework 4.0 using MVC framework and WCF service on a Windows 2003, 32-bit server containing IIS 6 successfully. However, when the same application is set up on a Win 2008 R2, 64-bit server, we get the following error when the application is accessing the WCF service: No component for supporting the service was found Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: Castle.MicroKernel.ComponentNotFoundException: No component for supporting the service was found We have set the flag for Enable 32-bit apps in "Application Pool" to true on the 64-bit server.

• Spring security and Struts 2

  I have a struts2 action with an @Secured({"ROLE_ADMIN"}) to secure the execute method. In the execute method i assign a message to a member variable of the action, then return SUCCESS and end up on the jsp page. On the page I retrieve the actions member variable with <sroperty. private String greeting; public String execute() throws Exception { this.greeting="Hello"; return SUCCESS; } // getters and setters for greeting ... <s:property value="greeting" /> The problem is when the secured annotation is present the jsp shows nothing for the member variable but when @Secured is removed the whole thing behaves properly and shows the message that was set into the member variable. It appears that the actual security is working ok but when enabled via the annotation the member variable (or maybe the instance of the action) is not making its way onto the value stack. I cant see any error messages.

• Converting a navbar to a tabbar app

• Can you suggest good ways of generating URLS for viewing tagged content

  For example, here on stack overflow the URL http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/javascript+php will give you all questions tagged with javascript and php. The system I have allows tags with spaces in them, so the approach used here would not be a good fit for me. What character would you use to separate the tags, so the URLs are still human readable, google readable and web browser compatible. My gut feeling was to use commas. eg http://example.com/tagged/first+tag,second+tag Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.

  Trying to connect to 4D Database. PHPINFO says PDO is installed etc etc... Testing on localhost MAMP system. • import existing source code as referenced library in eclipse

  I have some source codes from a friend that I would like to use as referenced library in my BlackBerry project. I'm not sure about how to package the source codes into a .jar file. I tried exporting the source to a JAR file and import it as external JAR in my project, it's giving me missing stack map error. I tried to preverify the .jar file generated from the source using the provided preverification tool from BlackBerry JDE, it didn't give me any output folder. In fact, I'm not sure if the way I export the source is correct. Can anyone provide step-by-step instructions on how to package existing source code into a valid JAR file that can be imported into my project as a referenced library? Again, I'm using eclipse. • Amazon S3 copy request timeouts

  We're uploading files to a temporary folder in a bucket. After that, we're trying to copy the uploaded files to its actual folder then delete the files in the temporary folder. It doesn't timeout when working with a single file. We're using the ThreeSharp API. • How to determine what user and group a Python script is running as?

  I have a CGI script that is getting an "IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied" error in the stack trace in the web server's error log. As part of debugging this problem, I'd like to add a little bit of code to the script to print the user and (especially) group that the script is running as, into the error log (presumably STDERR). I know I can just print the values to sys.stderr, but how do I figure out what user and group the script is running as? (I'm particularly interested in the group, so the $USER environment variable won't help; the CGI script has the setgid bit set so it should be running as group "list" instead of the web server's "www-data" - but I need code to see if that's actually happening.)

• Maximum Possible File Name Length in Windows Kernel

  I was wondering, what is the longest possible name length allowed by the Windows kernel? E.g.: I know the kernel uses UNICODE_STRING structures to hold all object paths, and since the byte length of a wide-character string is stored inside a USHORT, that allows for a maximum path length of 2^15 - 1 characters. Is there a similar, hard restriction on a file name (rather than path)? (I don't care if NTFS or FAT32 imposes a particular restriction; I'm looking for the longest possible theoretically allowed name in the kernel, assuming no additional file system or shell restrictions.) (Edit: For those wondering why this even matters, consider that normally, traversing a directory is achieved by FindFirstFile/FindNextFile calls, one call per file. Given the function named NtQueryDirectoryFile, which is the underlying system call and which returns multiple file names per call, it's actually possible to take advantage of this maximum-length restriction on the path to make an extremely-fast directory traverser that uses solely the stack as a buffer. Now I'm trying to extend that concept, and I need to know the maximum size of a file name.)

• How can I debug or set a break statement inside an expression tree?

  When an external library contains a LINQ provider, and it throws an exception when executing a dynamic expression tree, how can I break when that expression is thrown? For example, I use a third party LINQ2CRM provider, which allows me to call the Max<TSource, TResult>() method of IQueryable, but when it throws an InvalidCastException, I fail to break on the spot when the exception is thrown, making it hard to review the stack-trace because it's already unwinded when the debugger breaks it in my code. I've set "break on throw" for the mentioned exception. My debug settings are: Clarification on where exactly I'd want to break. I do not want to break in side the LINQ Expression, but instead, I want to break when the expression tree is executed, or, put in other words, when the IQueryable extension method Max() calls the override provided by the LINQ provider. • Catch and Show an error from a WCF service call in javascript.

  Hello, I'm calling a WCF service through javascript and right now it's not showing any errors that might occur on the service side to the user. I have the code below and am looking for a better way to inform the user an error has occured, including the call stack and error message if possible. The service itself throws a FaultException if an error has occured. However, I want to catch that error in the javascript call and show it to the user. • Hide TabControl buttons to manage stacked Panel controls

  I need to handle multiple panels, containing variuous data masks. Each panel shall be visible using a TreeView control. At this time, I handle the panels visibility manually, by making the selected one visible and bring it on top. Actually this is not much confortable, especially in the UI designer, since when I add a brand new panel I have to resize every panel and then design it... A good solution would be using a TabControl, and each panel is contained in a TabPage. But I cannot find any way to hide the TabControl buttons, since I already have a TreeView for selecting items. Another solution would be an ipotethic "StackPanelControl", where the Panels are arranged using a stack, but I couldn't find it anywhere. What's the best solution to handle this kind of UI?

• Why not speed up testing by using function dependency graph?

  It seems logical to me that if you have a dependency graph of your source code (tree showing call stack of all functions in your code base) you should be able to save a tremendous amount of time doing functional and integration tests after each release. Essentially you will be able to tell the testers exactly what functionality to test as the rest of the features remain unchanged from a source code point of view. If for instance you change a spelling mistake in once piece of the code, there is no reason to run through your whole test script again "just in case" you introduced a critical bug. My question, why are dependency trees not used in software engineering and if you use them, how do you maintain them? What tools are available that generate these trees for C# .NET, C++ and C source code?

• Is it safe to catch EXCEPTION_GUARD_PAGE

  Environment is VC++ 9 on various Win platforms (XP and later) I'm writing an unhandled exception handler. I have a vague recollection from my kernel days that it was bad to catch an EXCEPTION_GUARD_PAGE, as this was generated to tell the OS to enlarge the stack. My question is twofold: Can such an exception occur in user space? If so, is it safe to catch it? I'm not especially interested in doing anything with it. I just want to know if I need to put special code in to not catch it (as I'm catching everything at the moment).

How packet is packed to tcp segment, then ip packet. How it is transmitted to network card? (with series of I/O regs write and DMA?) Is it transmitted to network card in the "write" syscall handler (with some deep callstack) or is it transmitted at some other moment?

• Asp.net error object not set to a reference

  Hi all, Because I rush in development (a lot of whip cracking here) and declare my objects at the top of the function and instantiate inside my try-catch block, I get a lot of the good old "object not set to an instance of an object" errors while doing TDD, and later if I do miss a branch that object was used in (doing VB now, would prefer C#) or just in every day coding, object not set to an instance of an object is a bit vague. Sure the stack trace sends me to the line the error occured at, but it would be nice if I could modify my logging to either name the object or its type because sometimes I have multiple objects on the same line. It's not the end of the world, but in the end it would save me a few minutes each day. Any ideas on how I can pass the info on which object wasn't set? Thanks

  Hi, I need to set a unique color to each bar in the stacked bar chart. Whatever the color I see in one bar it shouldn't be repeated in any other bar or any other stack. For example: I have 5 bars in the report. Each bar has 3 different stacks. I want to apply a red related colors to the first bar and its stacks. Second bar should have blue related colors. etc..   As per my understanding a lock is not released until the runtime completes the code block of the lock(obj) ( because when the block completes it calls Monitor.Exit(obj). • Does a C++ destructor always or only sometimes call data member destructors?

  I'm trying to validate my understanding of C++ destructors. I've read many times that C++ supplies a default destructor if I don't write one myself. But does this mean that if I DO write a destructor that the compiler WON'T still provide the default cleanup of stack-allocated class fields? My hunch is that the only sane behavior would be that all class fields are destroyed no matter what, whether I provide my own destructor or not. In which case the statement I've read so many times is actually a little misleading and could be better stated as: "Whether or not you write your own destructor, the C++ compiler always writes a default destructor-like sequence to deallocate the member variables of your class. You may then specify additional deallocations or other tasks as needed by defining your own destructor" Is this correct?

• InvalidOperationException sequence contains more than one element even when only one element

  I have three tables, tblCompany table, tblParts table and a link table between them tblLinkCompanyParts. Since tblLinkCompanyParts is a link table so the columns that it has are LinkCompanyPartID(primary key), CompanyID from tblCompany table and PartID from tblParts as foreign keys. I have tied them up in the dbml file. In code if I write LinkCompanyParts.Parts (where LinkCompanyParts is an object of the tblLinkCompanyParts type) to get to the corresponding Part object I get the "InvalidOperationException: Sequence constains more than one element". I have looked at the data in the database and there is only one Parts record associated with the LinkCompanyPartID. The stack trace reads like at System.Linq.Enumerable.SingleOrDefault[TSource](IEnumerable`1 source) at System.Data.Linq.EntityRef`1.get_Entity() at ... I read about SingleOrDefault vs FirstOrDefault but since the link table should have a one-one mapping therefore I think SingleOrDefault should work and besides "SingleOrDefault" statement is being generated behind the scenes in the designer.cs file at the following line return this._Part.Entity; Any ideas?
