    Just wondering if anybody can run/compile application for Sun Java Realtime system on a VM such as VMWare or on the Cloud such as on Amazon EC2 ? I know it is not ideal running Realtime java on a virtualized infrastructure, but it makes things easier. (Otherwise I just have to install SLES SP2 on physical hardware.)

    Hi guys, i have installed TFS 2010 in a 2 server setup with an App Tier server and a SQL Server and am not 100% happy with the performance. Both are running in VM's on SAN disks and have been given the following virtual hardware each: Windows 2008 R2 1 CPU @ 2.8Ghz 2gb RAM what should i lift - neither machine is hammered but both do go up to 80% when people are doing things on them - should i add another CPU to each - usually this is now required in a VMWARE setup but i don't know if TFS 2010 takes advantage of an extra core??? thank you in advance :-)

    Hi, I have tried running windows xp development virtual machine under windows 7 and the performance was dreadful. I'm considering installing Linux and running the virtual machine from the Linux, but I'm not sure whether I can expect any performance gains? It's a 2.4ghz core 2 duo machine with 4gb ram and 5400 rpm hdd. Can somebody please recommend very cut down version of linux that can run VMWare player and isn't resource hungry? Thank you

    Hello, I'd like to import a real Windows Server 2008 server as a Hyper-V Virtual Server on another Windows Server 2008 instance. Anyone have any idea how to do this? I'm looking at the System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 but it doesn't seem to import Windows Server 2008 - nor is it free. Is there some other workaround (i.e. import the image into VMWare first, then convert to Hyper-V)? Please help. Regards, Randall

  • IIS7 web farm - local or shared content?

    We're setting up an IIS7 web farm with two servers. Should each server have its own local copy of the content, or should they pull content directly from a UNC share? What are the pros and cons of each approach? We currently have a single live server WEB1, with content stored locally on a separate partition. A job periodically syncs WEB1 to a standby server WEB2, using robocopy for content and msdeploy for config. If WEB1 goes down, Nagios notifies us, and we manually run a script to move the IP addresses to WEB2's network interface. Both servers are actually VMs running on separate VMWare ESX 4 hosts. The servers are domain-joined. We have around 50-60 live sites on WEB1 - mostly ASP.NET, with a few that are just static HTML. Most are low-traffic "microsites". A few have moderate traffic, but none are massive. We'd like to change this so both WEB1 and WEB2 are actively serving content. This is mainly for reliability - if WEB1 goes down, we don't want to have to manually intervene to fail things over. Spreading the load is also nice, but the load is not high enough right now for us to need this. We're planning to configure our firewall to balance traffic across the two servers. It will detect when a server goes down and will send all the traffic to the remaining live server. We're planning to use sticky sessions for now... eventually we may move to SQL Server session state and stateless load balancing. But we need a way for the servers to share content. We were originally planning to move all the content to a UNC share. Our storage provider says they can set up a highly available SMB share for us. So if we go the UNC route, the storage shouldn't be a single point of failure. But we're wondering about the downsides to this approach: We'll need to change the physical paths for each site and virtual directory. There are also some projects that have absolute paths in their web.config files - we'll have to update those as well. We'll need to create a domain user for the web servers to access the share, and grant that user appropriate permissions. I haven't looked into this yet - I'm not sure if the application pool identity needs to be changed to this user, or if there's another way to tell IIS to use this account when connecting to the share. Sites will no longer be able to access their content if there's ever an Active Directory problem. In general, it just seems a lot more complicated, with more moving parts that could break. Our storage provider would create a volume for us on their redundant SAN. If I understand correctly, this SAN volume would be mounted on a VM running in their redundant VMWare environment; this VM would then expose the SMB share to our web servers. On the other hand, a benefit of the shared content approach is that we'd only need to deploy code to one place, and there would never be a temporary inconsistency between multiple copies of the content. This thread is pretty interesting, though some of these people are working at a much larger scale. I've just been discussing content so far, but we also need to think about configuration. I don't know if we can just use DFS replication for the applicationHost.config and other files, or if it's best to use the shared configuration feature with the config on a UNC share.   • /etc/rc.local not being run on Ubuntu Desktop Install

    I have been trying to get sphinx to run at boot, so I added some lines to /etc/rc.local but nothing happens when I start up. If i run it manually it works however. /etc/init.d/rc.local start works fine as does /etc/rc.local It's listed in the default runlevel and is all executable but it does not work.   • Log Location Url Responses of 301 redirects from IIS

    Is there a way to log 301 redirects returned by IIS with the (1) request Url and the (2) location Url of the response? Something like this: Url, Location /about-us, /about /old-page, /new-page The IIS logs contain the Request Url and the status code (301), but not the location Url of the response. Ideally there would be an additional field in the IIS Log called Location that would be populated when IIS responded with a 301. In my case the source of the redirect could be ISAPI Rewrite Rules, ASP.NET applications, Cold Fusion applications, or IIS itself. Perhaps there is a way to log IIS response data?   • Mac OS X - Force screen resolution

    Hello! I'm trying to use the lastest version of a certain development tool and it's sort of difficult to use on a 1200x800 display. Using VMWare Fusion, I can set the screen resolution inside a VM to 1900x1200 on my 13" MBP and it's still usable. Does anyone know of a way to force Mac OS X to scale it's resolution? I tried ScreenResX and it said the scaled resolution was "invalid" or something like that. I know that there are only a certain number of pixels on the screen. I'm only asking how to scale, not set a legit resolution. My current hack solution is to run Snow Leopard Server in a VM with resolution scaling.

  • Having XP VM use my host OSX ssh tunnel to connect to a remote site?

    I am using Mac OSX and have Windows XP running on VMWare Fusion. I'm creating an ssh tunnel from OSX to a remote server, and then trying to have Windows XP use that tunnel (I actually use a program called Proxifier on XP to filter my XP MS SQL Server traffic through that tunnel) Note that I can successfully create an ssh tunnel (on port 9333) from the XP putty to the remote host, and have SQL Server Proxify through that tunnel and it all works correctly. However when I try to set up the tunnel in OSX, and have Proxifier in XP point to the OSX tunnel instead of localhost, it doesn't seem to connect. Here is the OSX command i'm using to create the tunnel: ssh -i /my/key -p 9001 -D 9333 -g me@remotehostname Then I set my XP proxifier to point to macosxhostname:9333 (instead of the previous localhost:9333 which worked corrently when using putty) Any suggestions on what I may have missed? My XP firewall is turned off while setting this up.

  • Why does my mac have page outs when I have inactive memory?

    From what I've read, page outs are a sign that you don't have enough RAM. I have also read that if you have inactive memory available, then the machine will use that memory when starting up new programs. I have about 2GB of inactive memory and very little available memory. Once this happens, my page outs go up. Why is this and do I need more memory? I have 8GB of RAM. I'm running VMware Fusion 5 with 2GB allotted to Windows 8.

  • Enabling Multiple Monitor Support from Terminal Services/Remote Desktop over Citrix

    Our Remote Desktop/Terminal Services solution where I work relies on Citrix for machines not connected via the VPN. We're using Citrix Xen server (I'm pretty sure) and I'm going to try to connect to a Windows 7 Host (my work computer) and I think the RDC client runs on a Win2003 host (exposed via Citrix). Is it possible to take advantage of Windows 7 multiple monitor support for RDC with this setup? Would I need to try getting my Citrix guys to have a different host machine for the RDC (Win2008, or Win7?)? I'm probably going to connect using the OS X Citrix client, but I'd be willing to BootCamp/Fusion up a Windows instance to work remotely, as well. I really want to be able to use multiple monitors remotely. It does "span" multiple montiors currently (I have a 3000x1024 desktop, for example) but I'd rather it be "true" multiple monitor instead of one giant desktop, if possible.

  • Merging Two KML Files to Display Them with Different Marker Icons on Google Maps

    Let's say that I have two spreadsheets with addresses. I uploaded these spreadsheets into Google Fusion Tables, geocoded the addresses, and exported the results as KML files. Now, I want to take these two KML files and merge them, while maintaining the location data and using it to map the points with Google Maps. Well, I found a way to easily merge the KML files: import both of them into a "My Maps" map with Google Maps! However, my problem is this: when I do that, all of the locations in my data have the same marker icon on the map. From past experience, I know that these markers can be somehow defined inside the KML files. Is it possible to combine these two KML files while giving one's points one marker icon and the other's points another marker icon? Just in case my question is confusing, what I mean, is giving the first set of points blue markers, for example, and the other set of points red markers, so that they can be overlayed.
