  • What is an application for "web site recognition"?

    This explanation isn't clear to me. Let me describe an application for web site recognition. Suppose that we want to know what everyone is doing with the web at starbuck. We can use wireshark or other programs to sniff all the packets. By grouping all the secondary connections with the primary one, then we would be able to get a much easier picture of user's primary activities. Is this talking about being able to recognize which websites each of the laptops are connecting to?

  • Unable to access certain websites from a computer

    One of the desktop computers in my office is unable to access some particular websites. We've tried from Chrome, IE, Firefox, but no luck. eg: http://spsims.wto.org/ -> click on "Regular notifications" On the affected computer, every browser times out after the click. Whereas it should redirect the user to http://spsims.wto.org/web/pages/search/notification/regular/Search.aspx How can I diagnose this further? This is a Windows XP machine.

  • Windows 7 comments field missing when browsing network

    I have just purchased three Windows 7 Professional Dell 64-bit PCs for testing prior to upgrading our company’s 120+ PCs from Windows XP Professional. The setup is a standard domain with a Windows Server 2003 32-bit server. We name each PC XP1 to XP150 so that when users join or leave, I don’t have to rename the PC. We use the Description field to allocate the user’s name to each PC. We also have a share set up on each PC using the user’s name. When I browse the network using Windows Explorer in XP, I get a useful display. The left pane showing the PC number and the right pane showing NAME and COMMENTS So, for example I would see: XP01 Fred Bloggs (Each PC on a new row.) The right pane is my main tool for administering the network. I can easily see the PC number and the name of the user. However, in Windows 7, this seems to have been thrown out of the window and replaced with fields that I do not need and in my case always display the same info. "Name", "Category", "Workgroup", "Network Location" In my case the Name column gives the PC number (XP10) etc and all three other columns display identical useless information. So I can’t see who is using XP10. When I am in “help desk” mode, I would naturally ask the user’s name and use my remote desktop client to view their screen. The user isn’t aware of their PC name, so I am finding it impossible to match the user name with a PC number. Any ideas how to overcome this "by design" change to Windows 7?

  • Lightning fast forum based around metadata / tags? [closed]

    I wonder if anything like this exists. I'd like to add a forum to my site, but instead of the usual forum/subforum/sub-subforum structure, I'd like to use a metadata/tag approach where everything exists as a single directory, and where there's a search field at the top which instantly (<0.5 sec) filters the threads to a particular keyword or keywords. Also, as the admin, I would be able to add highly visible buttons at the top, which can be clicked on for the main categories I choose for the forum (nevertheless, users can also add tags to their own threads outside of these default main tags I supply if they wish). This approach, if done properly, is more powerful, efficient, maintenance free, scalable and friendly than a standard forum, so I was hoping someone had the same idea and made something out of it. It couldn't be that hard. I'd want the speed to be up to (or near) the standard of this: http://forum.dlang.org/ Other forums (e.g.: phpBB, shudder) are orders of magnitude worse than that in terms of latency (posting or browsing), and I think that is wrong, even in principle ;)

(That is, instead of a table/2-dimensional array with values in a grid, the values can be thought of in a cube instead.) Is there a way to display this "cube" interactively, ideally on a webpage? Specifically, given the data, it would work something like this: the user selects two of the 3 variables. He then sees a "stack" of tables, one for each value of the third variable (cross-sections, in other words). By selecting the appropriate table from the stack, he can see the (i,j,k) value he wants. The "technology" for displaying such a thing (stacked tables, rotation, etc.) already exists, so this seems the sort of thing that someone ought to have written already. To be clear: I don't need sophisticated graphics necessarily, just the ability to select from cross-sections of variables. But I have no experience with (say, for displaying on a webpage) what web gadgets exist, so I'm clueless how to even search for one. (Google searches like "multidimensional data visualization" didn't throw up anything useful. Google Spreadsheets can do a few kinds of charts which can be embedded on a webpage, but I cannot tell if this is one of them.) [I can imagine how it ought to work for higher dimensions. For four-dimensions, instead of selecting just a stack, you'd first select an (i,j) from an "outer table", which would show all (k,l) values for that (i,j). For higher dimensions, inductively: you select (i,j), and then repeat what you'd do with 2 fewer dimensions.] So has this been written? Is this easy to write?     Naenara/KCCKP offers a catalog of hundreds of mp3 files that can only be downloaded in small amounts at a time. Clicking on a song title invokes mp3player.php and downloads a plaintext link to the mp3 file: http://www.kcckp.net/mp3player.php?e+8 Going directly to mp3player.php will display Korean error messages and send you back 1 page in your history. Is there any way to parse/coax mp3player.php into dumping a full list of mp3 links? I am sorry if this is a painfully easy or impossible task, I have not even begun to delve into php. </newbiewhining>

  • Hosting a web site at home: ISP Blocking port 80?

    Hello, I presume this is a better place to put this rather than server fault. I'm interested in setting up a small site to host at home as a "proof of concept" exercise, i.e. to prrove that I know how to do it. I've got a (virtual) server 2003 machine with a site on it, all configured with port forwarding through to 80 on my server. I have a Belkin F5D7634 which I have put my DYNDNS details in but when I try to go to my DYNDNS address it comes up with the page cannot be displayed. My ISP is Carphone Warehouse/AOL and I've been unable to find any information if they block port 80. If they do, can anybody reccomend a home provider that does not block port 80? Regards, Tom.

    Sorry the title couldn't be more specific. I installed Abyss Web Server. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and I have Wireless Mobile Broadband internet. I used to be able to access (and other people on other networks) my site by entering my ip address in the browser, but after I formatted, and the installed abyss web server again, this does not work anymore. There are no errors. I CAN visit my own site by entering my ip address BUT anybody else can't do the same, it just says "connecting" in the browser's statusbar and it never changes. I have consulted the docs and have found no help. Google hasn't helped with this problem either. Can somebody please help? Thank you :)

  • Is it possible to rsync your web site to another backup server and use the same .htaccess files?

    I am trying to use rsync to replicate all the files from one web server to another server that could act as a backup if the first one went down. The problem I am having is that the .htaccess file requires the AuthUserFile to have the fully quallified path to the .htpasswd file and I cannot make the paths the same on the two machines. Does anyone know how I might use the same .htaccess file on two different servers? Thanks for any help that can be provided.

  • Is there a real code-free webpage design tool ?

    Recently I was doing web design. I found that the current web design tool (like Expression Web, Dreamweaver) is terribly coupled with code. Though I managed to use HTML, CSS and many others, I found those tool not free enough when came to design. What I want is a totaly code-free design tool with which I can use to draw the layout, paste pictures, add texts and so on. It doesn't need to have functionality to covert the design into code because I can do it myself. That is to say, I need the software to create a blueprint for me. I'm currently using Photoshop to do this. However it is too stupid in displying the layout (It can't show the width and many other attributes, I had to draw them by myself). Can you find one for me? The current configuration is the following: To access through Internet you use http://webexample.com To access through Local Network you use http://myweb The main problem is that the local users cannot share links with external users. Thats a problem for us. I want to setup the following configuration: All users (local and Internet) access through http://webexample.com The local DNS server resolves http://webexample.com to the local Network IP (i.e 192.168.2.100) Any other suggestion? Which is the best way to override http://webexample.com resolution in Windows Server? It can be done on DNS server or it have to be done in hosts file?

    Background: We have one pretty slow and expensive satellite Internet connection that is shared in a network with 5-50 users. To limit traffic, users shall pay a certain sum of money per hour. Routing and traffic accounting on user basis is done by a opensuse 10.3 server. Login is done via pppoe, and for each connection, username, bytes_sent, bytes_rcvd, start_time, end_time,etc are written into a mysql database. Now it was decided that we want to change from time-based to volume-based pricing. As the original developer who installed the system a couple of years ago isn't available, I'm trying to do the changes. Although I'm absolutely new to all this, there is some progress. However, there's one point I'm absolutely stuck. Up to now, only administrators can access connection details and billing information via a web interface. But as volume-based prices are less transparent to users than time-based prices, it is essential that users themselves can check their connections and how much they cost via the web interface. For this, we need some kind of user authentication. Actual question: How to develop such a user authentication? Every user has a linux system user account. With this user name and password, connection to the pppoe-server is made by the client machines. I thought about two possibles ways to authenticate users: First possibility: Users type username and password in a form. This is then somehow checked. We already have to possibilities to change passwords via the web interface. The second possibility I see: all pppoe connections are logged in the mysql database. If I could somehow retrieve the username (or uid) of the user connected by pppoe, this could be used to authenticate users. Users could only check their internet connections and costs when they are online (and thus paying money), but this could be tolerated. Here's a line of the script that inserts connections into the database: my $username = $ENV{PEERNAME}; I thought it would be easy to use this variable, but $username seems to be always empty in test-scripts (print $username). Any idea how to retrieve the user connected to the pppoe server? Sorry for the long question! Any help would be very much appreciated. :)
