• How do I customize what a third party MSM does?

  I'm trying to convert a project in Visual Studio 2008 from static linking of the CRT to dynamic linking. This was easy enough, and I added the CRT MSM and policy MSM to my Wix file with no problems. I am not that happy with the MSI that is output though, it is much larger than what I expected. Looking at the MSI with Orca shows three copies of the CRT DLLs that I need. From looking at the conditions, one of the sets is used for pre-XP installs. Since the system requirements are XP and later, how do I remove this component without touching the original MSM? This needs to be done in an automated build, so Orca isn't a possible solution. Plus, when I tried it with Orca, the filesize remained the same after deleting the File and Component rows. And somewhat related, how do I set the permanent attribute in the components that remain?

• MySQL extension of PHP not working

  In a Debian server, and after intallation and removal of SquirrelMail (with some downgrade and upgrade of php5, mysql...) the MySQL extension of PHP has stopped working. I have php5-mysql installed, and when I try to connect to a database through php-cli, i connect successfully, but when I try to connect from a web served by Apache I cannot connect. This script, run by php5-cli: echo phpinfo(); $link = mysql_connect('localhost', 'user, 'password'); if (!$link) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); } echo 'Connected successfully'; mysql_close($link); Prints the phpinfo, which includes "/etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mysql.ini", and also the MySQL section with all the configuration: SOCKET, LIBS... And then it prints "Connectes successfully". But when run by apache accessed by web browser, it displays the phpinfo, which includes "/etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/mysql.ini", but has the MySQL section missing, and the script dies printing "Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect()". Note that both "/etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mysql.ini" and "/etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/mysql.ini" are in fact the same configuration, because I have in debian the structure: /etc/php5/apache2 /etc/php5/cgi /etc/php5/cli /etc/php5/conf.d And both point at the same directory: /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d -> ../conf.d /etc/php5/cli -> ../conf.d Where /etc/php5/conf.d/mysql.ini consists of one line: extension=mysql.so So my question is: why is the MySQL extension for PHP not working if I have the configuration included just in the same way as in php-cli, which is working? • How to connect a USB GDI printer to Linux over a D-Link print server?

  The setup is the following: +------------+ +-----------------+ +---------+ | HP LJ P1005|--USB--| D-Link DPR-1020 |---LAN---| PC Linux| +------------+ +-----------------+ + +---------+ | +------------+ +--| PC Windows | +------------+ HP LJ P1005 is one of those GDI printers that requires the printer driver to do most of the work for it and therefore is a bit "special". D-Link DPR-1020 is a print server with an Ethernet and an USB port that actually supports printing to challenged (read GDI) printers using a utility called PS-Link. What the utility does is basically mirror a USB port over the network to the print server so that the printer driver and the printer both are happy to talk to each other. The PC-s are notebooks that come and go, i.e. are not there all the time. Is there an equivalent of the D-Link PS-Link utility for Linux that could mirror a USB port over the network for a Linux host? And can the solution be used with D-Link DPR-1020? If not then I basically wasted the money buying the print server because the goal was to share a small printer among a couple of users with diverse operating systems in an office. The print server specs say that it supports Linux and LJ P1005, but the Catch 22 appears to be the solution used for GDI printers... It should be noted that it is possible to print from Linux to LJ P1005 directly over USB. This far sharing involved reconnecting the USB cable to appropriate computer to print. Now one of the desks is separated, so the cable does not work. Searching the net did not yield anything useful. Please do not suggest solutions involving a Windows machine (either virtual or not), my question is whether a solution only involving a Linux machine exists.

• Windows Network File Transfer to Samba server: “Are you sure you want to copy this file without its properties?”

  I am transferring a lot of files to a new NAS based on OpenMediaVault, with the Samba 3.5.6 service running. I am transferring from Windows 7 64-bit to the NAS, and on some media files Windows is prompting about losing some property data across the transfer. I have never seen this before when transferring to Samba boxes I have built myself (vs this turnkey solution), so I'm guessing there must be a Samba setting I can change to preserve the file properties in question instead of permanently losing whatever they contain (Date Taken? Exposure? Flash Fired? etc). Or maybe I've just never encountered this before; I'm really not sure. I tried adding ea support = yes and store dos attributes = yes to the [global] section, but the problem remains. The Linux file system is ext4 mounted with user_xattr (full options: defaults,acl,user_xattr,noexec,usrjquota=aquota.user,grpjquota=aquota.group,jqfmt=vfsv0) as Samba requires. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! • Can I export a SharePoint list to an Excel file subdivided into separate worksheets?

  We have a SharePoint 2007 deployment which will have a substantially large document library. My client wants the ability to export this library to an Excel spreadsheet, but specifically wants the ability to divide the spreadsheet into several worksheets based on a specific field. Is this possible to accomplish in WSS 3.0, through the object model or otherwise? There is a out-of-the-box Export to Spreadsheet, but it does not appear to support automated subdivision of the list items into separate worksheets. I do not know if Excel Services that come with MOSS are capable of it, but we do not have MOSS so we cannot consider it an option for now.

• How can I print from my lion mac mini to my windows XP, with simple file sharing?

  I have quite a complicated setup, perhaps. And a lot of history on this issue, I'm hoping that I don't have to buy a new printer. I've got a HP Wireless USB Print Server, which requires client software, I can't just use it as an IP Printer. The HP software is pretty poor on the mac and is no longer supported and often locks up the printer server and takes some considerable effort to actually print something. Let alone if a windows machine attaches to it first. My printer is an Epson Stylus R285. However, the windows client software is fine and we can print from windows 7 / XP without problem. We have simple file sharing setup as this is the only way I could get windows XP to talk to windows 7. However, I can't seem to get my mac mini to connect as anything other than a guest to my xp machine, to connect to the shared printer. I'm not considering some kind of internet printing as this would seems the simplest solution. But I'm not sure what will work with my setup ?

• Delete backup files older than 7 days

  Using osql command, SSQL backup of a database is created. It is saved to Disk. Then renamed to match the date of the day backup was taken. All these files are saved in a single folder all the time. for example: Batch1.bat does the following 1) Created backup.bak 2) renamed to backup 12-13-2009.bak (this is done by the combination of % ~ - etc to get the date parameter) This is now automated to take backup everyday by Task scheduler in Windows. Can the batch file also be modified to delete backup files older than 7 days? if so, how ? If it is not possible via batch file, other than manually deleting the files are there any other alternatives to automate the deleting job ? Thanks in advance, Balaji S

• Windows 7, Printer is unavailable until PC reboot

  We are having a problem that I haven't seen before and can find no answers to online. A desktop running Windows 7 is unable to print using network printers. When the user tries, no matter what printer it is, he get's the following message when using Microsoft Office applications: "Current printer is unavailable. Select another printer." When the end user uses Outlook we get the message: "Printing is not available. There are no printers installed. You can select and configure a printer in Windows Control Panel." Now here is the confusing part, if we reboot the pc it works fine for a little while and then goes back to the same old same old. The printers are working fine for every other user as well so I believe it is the user's machine. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Edit: I'd like to add in that some people were having luck disabling snmp for the printers. Restarting the print spooler doesn't seem to do anything.

• What is the most efficient way to find missing semicolons in VS with C++?

  What are the best strategies for finding that missing semicolon that's causing the error? Are there automated tools that might help. I'm currently using Visual Studio 2008, but general strategies for any environment would be interesting and more broadly useful. Background: Presently I have a particularly elusive missing semicolon (or brace) in a C++ program that is causing a C2143 error. My header file dependencies are fairly straightforward, but still I can't seem to find the problem. Rather than post my code and play Where's Wally (or Waldo, depending on where you're from) I thought it would be more useful to get some good strategies that can be applied in this and similar situations. As a side-question: the C2143 error is showing up in the first line of the first method declaration (i.e. the method's return type) in a .cpp file that includes only its associated .h file. Would anything other than semicolons or braces lead to this behaviour?

• Is a class that is hard to unit test badly designed?

  I am now doing unit testing on an application which was written over the year, before I started to do unit-testing diligently. I realized that the classes I wrote are hard to unit test, for the following reasons: Relies on loading data from database. Which means I have to setup a row in the table just to run the unit test (and I am not testing database capabilities). Requires a lot of other external classes just to get the class I am testing to its initial state. On the whole, there don't seem to be anything wrong with the design except that it is too tightly coupled (which by itself is a bad thing). I figure that if I have written automated test cases with each of the class, hence ensuring that I don't heap extra dependencies or coupling for the class to work, the class might be better designed. Does this reason holds water? What are your experiences?

• 'Bug in Mailman version 2.1.12'

  I'm working on setting up a server running Plesk 10.4.4 Update #13 on Centos 6.2. I've configured Mailman and now I want to set up some mailing lists. I've created a list in the Plesk control panel, but when I try to administer the new list (by visiting http://lists.[domain].com/mailman/admin/[listname] I see the following error: Bug in Mailman version 2.1.12 We're sorry, we hit a bug! Please inform the webmaster for this site of this problem. Printing of traceback and other system information has been explicitly inhibited, but the webmaster can find this information in the Mailman error logs. I see exactly the same error if I try to go to the list info page at http://lists.[domain].com/mailman/listinfo/[listname]. I would follow the instructions and look in the error logs, but I can't find them. I would expect to find a file at /var/log/mailman/error, but there's nothing there. My test list seems to work correctly. It sends all the expected email. It's just the web pages for the list that seem to be broken. Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions for tracking down and fixing the problem? p.s. I think I've chosen the correct Stack Exchange site, but it this question would be better asked elsewhere, please let me know. Update: I got to the bottom of this, so I'm documenting the answer in case anyone else has the same problem. The fact that I couldn't find the error log was the clue. The problem was that the Mailman process didn't have permissions to create an error log. And it seems that if Mailman can't create an error log then it will respond to any web request with this error page. Creating an error log file (in /var/log/mailman/error) and giving it the correct permissions fixed the problem.

• Self-connecting printers

  Hello, I work as an administrator in a small company using XP Professional on all computers and two servers with Win 2003 Server. Recently a very unusual problam occured one of the computers keeps connecting to all the printers on the network it doesn't matter if it's an administrator or Domain User as soon as somebody logs in the commputer connects all the printers. The printers are either installed on local computers or on the server and shared. There is no log-on script connecting the printers, I install them manualy and none of the other computers shows such behaviour. We have a printer which is installed on two computers and both of them share it (I'm moving it to Server from a small PC which shared it up to now, but some computers still use the old connection), meaning this specific computer connects to one of the printer two times and it can't use either of the connections. How to prevent this self-connecting to all printers (none of the other computers has this problem). If I delte them from the "Printers" folder everything works fine untill I reconnect and the Folder is once again full of all the printers we have. I solved the smaller problem, computer is now capable of printing on all of the printers (it seems there have been some registry issues), after cleaning the registry and reinstalling the printer it seems to work just fine. But the second thing prevails, the computer connects to all the printers in the network (when I remove one/multiple it is reconnected right after the next log-in by any user).

• PHP can be exclusively accessed by SWF

  I'm not sure how to describe this, but basically I have a PHP class file: class HelloHello { public function getSomeData($input_parameter){ // code to retrieve data from the database } public function deleteSomeData($input_parameter){ // code to delete data from the database } } This class is on the server and is part of the backend that connects with a database, and it's meant to be accessed by the frontend SWF only (not to be directly accessed). I've setup Flex to read this class and access it. But how do I make sure that someone doesn't develop a script that can call this php file directly and access its methods? For example using a script to add data in a fast automated way, or use the delete method directly, ouch. Is this a legitimate concern, or this can't be done?

• Beginner's resources/introductions to classification algorithms.

  Hi, everybody. I am entirely new to the topic of classification algorithms, and need a few good pointers about where to start some "serious reading". I am right now in the process of finding out, whether machine learning and automated classification algorithms could be a worthwhile thing to add to some application of mine. I already scanned through "How to Solve It: Modern heuristics" by Z. Michalewicz and D. Fogel (in particular, the chapters about linear classifiers using neuronal networks), and on the practical side, I am currently looking through the WEKA toolkit source code. My next (planned) step would be to dive into the realm of Bayesian classification algorithms. Unfortunately, I am lacking a serious theoretical foundation in this area (let alone, having used it in any way as of yet), so any hints at where to look next would be appreciated; in particular, a good introduction of available classification algorithms would be helpful. Being more a craftsman and less a theoretician, the more practical, the better... Hints, anyone?

• Ubuntu 10.04->10.10 in failed state - how to recover?

  I was running Ubuntu 10.04 and attempted to upgrade to 10.10. I have a really slow connection (DSL 128kbits/sec) and copying the upgrade files took about 26 hours. I of course let it run unattended. When I came back, I notice the following 3 dlgs: (1) "Could not install the upgrades The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg -- configure -a)." (2) "gpk-update-icon Distribution upgrades available maverick 10.10 (stable) [more information] [Do no show this again] [Cancel] [Ok]" (3) "gpk-update-icon Security updates available The following important updates are available for your computer: libwebkit-1.0-2-dbg - Web content engine library for Gtk+ - Debugging symbols libcupsimage2 - Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - Raster image library ..." What is the best response to all of this? I went through something similar in an attempted network upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 and had to reload the unbootable machine fresh from distribution media (all data was lost). I'd like to avoid that here. I have not yet responded to the dialogs, and want to make sure the system is still bootable and not lose my data this time.

• Why do Java/C# edge out C++ as the recommended language to learn OOP on S.O?

  I noticed after reading the answers/discussion to this question (What is the best language to learn OOP on?) - that more and more people are recommending C# or Java over C++ to learn OOP on. A simple term search on that answer page results in 10 hits for C++, 21 for C# and 27 for Java. Now, I understand that these 2 languages fix a lot of quirks and issues with C++, and looked up these resources that relate mostly to performance, JVM vs native implementation, systems focus vs applications, manual memory management vs automated et al. My question is - are there any fundamental differences in the OO capabilities of Java/C# vs C++? Or are the former recommended purely due to their generic ease of use/improvements over the latter? Thanks. PS, I'm aware of Java interface inheritance vs C++ multiple inheritance as a difference. I would consider that an implementational one rather than functional.

• Perform manual test, automate after - or never?

  In my current company, we have one tester. Having spoken to this tester, she says that in testing, before implementing any automation systems, the scripts (steps to take) are manually written and performed (performed at least once). Is this the way things work in testing? To make me laugh, this has been done in this case, yet no automation. It makes me laugh to see the lead tester perform loads of different combinations of usernames and passwords for a login form (which she is not overly keen on having automated) when I could easily automate that (but politics in the company won't allow that). This doesn't seem like the environment where a junior tester (not me, I'm a SDET) cannot learn anything. Thanks

• XSS exploit when JavaScript is disabled

  I'm getting pretty frustrated trying to make McAffee whitelist a supposed exploit on a site i work on. The issue is that their automated system has detected a supposed XSS exploit but the exploit only exists when JavaScript is disabled. Given the fact that you need JavaScript to be disabled for the exploit to exist then surely this means this is not an exploit. Can anyone think of any possible arguments to the contrary? Update - To add more detail: The problem comes from in one place unsanitized URL content is written to an anchor tag href.So, with JS disabled you could have something like this: <a href="foor.php?"><script>alert('foo')</script>#someanchor" .. When JavaScript is enabled this href is updated to be this (on dom ready): <a href="javascript:;">link</a> So, with JS enabled the link is no longer injected, with JS disabled the alert would no longer execute.

• Why does clicking on Windows 7 Printer Properties Result In Driver Not Installed?

  The question I need to ask is has anyone heard of getting a "driver not installed" error when clicking on a printer's properties on Windows 7, and is there a workaround? Here are the details of the problem. One of our users has a Windows 7 desktop, and an HP LaserJet 4050 T connected to via a parallel-to-usb converter. The PLC5 universal driver was installed for series 4050 printers. I needed to install the PLC 6 driver, which completed successfully. The user is an administrator of the system, and I was prompted to and accepted running as Administrator to install the driver. After the install, I went to see the 4050's properties and was prompted that the PLC6 driver was not installed. I believe the PLC6 driver was installed, because the PLC5 driver resulted in receiving an official HP error page indicating the printer was "not set up for collating" as the second page of printing two copies of a one page email. This problem did not occur with the PLC 6 driver. Oddly enough, setting back to PLC5 produced the same error about the PLC5 driver not being installed. I ignored/dismissed the error box (did not re-install the driver), and reproduced the error, with the second page being the HP not set up for collating error page. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to clear it would be appreciated. The closest fix I could find was on a Microsoft tech page, and they had me clear winsock out of a Administrator run command line, followed by a reboot. That did not fix the problem. The problem is: Even using a valid user with correct password my ldapsearch ends with zero informations retrieved from the directory, plus I've got a strange response on the result line. # search result search: 2 result: 32 No such object # numResponses: 1 here is the ldapsearch request: ldapsearch -H ldap.domain.tld -W -b dc=domain,dc=tld -s sub -D cn=user,ou=service,ou=employees,ou=users,dc=domain,dc=tld I did not specify any filter as I want to check that ldapsearch is correctly printing only allowed attribute.

• Application_End() cannot access cache through HttpContext.Current.Cache[key]

  I want to be able to maintain certain objects between application restarts. To do that, I want to write specific cached items out to disk in Global.asax Application_End() function and re-load them back on Application_Start(). I currently have a cache helper class, which uses the following method to return the cached value: return HttpContext.Current.Cache[key]; Problem: during Application_End(), HttpContext.Current is null since there is no web request (it's an automated cleanup procedure) - therefore, I cannot access .Cache[] to retrieve any of the items to save to disk. Question: how can I access the cache items during Application_End()?

• HP Laserjet 1320 drivers for Windows 7

  Background I replaced som XP computers with Win 7 computers. We have a HP Laserjet 1320dn printer attached to the LAN. The XP computers could print to it from Word in duplex mode without any issues. Problem The Win 7 computers downloaded a full set of drivers including a "HP Laserjet 1320 PCL5" driver. However using this, Word's page footers cause extra pages to be printed with just a letter or so at a time from the footer. Some other apps have similar issues. I also have an ancient Laserjet 1200 attached to the LAN via a Jetdirect box and that works just fine. So I don't think the problem is with Word (the computers came with Word 2010 starter). What I tried I wrangled the control-panel new printer dialogue into using a "HP Laserjet 2100 PS" driver for the HP Laserjet 1320dn. Now my Word documents print as they should. However I don't have a duplex option on the print dialogue. I'd really like to be able to use duplex printing. Question Windows used to have a Universal Postscript driver that read a Postscript Printer Definition (PPD) file to make the printer's features available (tray choice, duplex etc). I can't see any way to do this in Windows 7. Is there a way? Is there any other way I can get Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to print properly to a HP Laserjet 1320dn and have access to all it's major features? Addendum: My page in Word looks like this: +--------------------+ | aa bb cc | | | | lorem ipsum dolor | | | ... | | | pp qq rr | +--------------------+ The headers and footers were inserted using Insert - header - blank (3 column).
