  • Core Data vs. SQLitePersistentObjects

    I'm creating an iPhone app and I'm trying to choose between 2 solutions for a persistent store. Core Data, or SQLitePersistentObjects. Basically, all my app needs is a way to store an array of model objects and then load them again to display in a UITableView. Its nothing too complicated. Core Data seems to have a much higher learning curve than the simple to use SQLitePersistentObjects. Are there any obvious benefits of using Core Data over SQLitePersistentObjects in my case?

  • CFHTTP and IIS 7 Connection Failture (NOT SSL)

    I'm trying to do a very simple CFHTTP GET call to a local website running on IIS7, however it throws a 408 Connection Failure. I've done all the obvious things: The site is listed in the hosts file locally I've added the CFHTTPPARAM tags for IIS compression issues (deflate;q=0) Surfing to the URL in the browser works fine Doing a CFHTTP to google.com works fine, no local sites work at all. When searching on Google there are others that have had this, but no solutions. Anyone successfully got through this issue?

    I have a list of digits, say "123456", and I need to map it to a string, any string. The only constraint on the map functions are: each list of digits must map to a unique character string (this means the string can be arbitrarily long) character string can only contain 0-9, a-z, A-Z What map function would produce the shortest strings? Solutions in JavaScript are preferred. note: Clearly the simplest solution is to use the original list of digits, so make sure you solution does better than that.

    Since SO's question database is becoming an excellent first point of call for finding answers to coding problems, some people (like me) might like to be able to fire up searches from their iGoogle home page, among the other searches you might launch from there. I've created a very simple gadget to do this, and put the source below. My hope is that this might provide a foundation on which community members with better ideas for performing this function, or ideas for enhancing it, can update it. Perhaps we could make it configurable to search via a site scope search from Google and / or a question search, for instance.   • Generate random coordinates from area outside of a rectangle?

    Hi all, I'm working on a simple tutorial, and I'd like to randomly generate the positions of the red and green boxes in the accompanying images anywhere inside the dark gray area, but not in the white area. Are there any particularly elegant algorithms to do this? There are some hackish ideas I have that are really simple (continue to generate while the coordinates are not outside the inside rectangle, etc.), but I was wondering if anyone had come up with some neat solutions.   • Problem with GetDefaultPrinter() over a VPN c++

    I am writing an application that gets its dimensions from the paper ratio of the default printer of the local computer. This all works well unless the default printer is over a VPN. When this is the case, calling GetDefaultPrinter() takes too long. I need to find a way to put a time constraint on GetDefaultPrinter() and if it exceeds that constraint, break out of the function.   • Code Golf: Evaluating Mathematical Expressions

    Challenge Here is the challenge (of my own invention, though I wouldn't be surprised if it has previously appeared elsewhere on the web). Write a function that takes a single argument that is a string representation of a simple mathematical expression and evaluates it as a floating point value. A "simple expression" may include any of the following: positive or negative decimal numbers, +, -, *, /, (, ). Expressions use (normal) infix notation. Operators should be evaluated in the order they appear, i.e. not as in BODMAS, though brackets should be correctly observed, of course. The function should return the correct result for any possible expression of this form. However, the function does not have to handle malformed expressions (i.e. ones with bad syntax). Examples of expressions: 1 + 3 / -8 = -0.5 (No BODMAS) 2*3*4*5+99 = 219 4 * (9 - 4) / (2 * 6 - 2) + 8 = 10 1 + ((123 * 3 - 69) / 100) = 4 2.45/8.5*9.27+(5*0.0023) = 2.68... Rules I anticipate some form of "cheating"/craftiness here, so please let me forewarn against it! By cheating, I refer to the use of the eval or equivalent function in dynamic languages such as JavaScript or PHP, or equally compiling and executing code on the fly. (I think my specification of "no BODMAS" has pretty much guaranteed this however.) Apart from that, there are no restrictions. I anticipate a few Regex solutions here, but it would be nice to see more than just that. Now, I'm mainly interested in a C#/.NET solution here, but any other language would be perfectly acceptable too (in particular, F# and Python for the functional/mixed approaches). I haven't yet decided whether I'm going to accept the shortest or most ingenious solution (at least for the language) as the answer, but I would welcome any form of solution in any language, except what I've just prohibited above! My Solution I've now posted my C# solution here (403 chars). Update: My new solution has beaten the old one significantly at 294 chars, with the help of a bit of lovely regex! I suspected that this will get easily beaten by some of the languages out there with lighter syntax (particularly the funcional/dynamic ones), and have been proved right, but I'd be curious if someone could beat this in C# still. Update I've seen some very crafty solutions already. Thanks to everyone who has posted one. Although I haven't tested any of them yet, I'm going to trust people and assume they at least work with all of the given examples. Just for the note, re-entrancy (i.e. thread-safety) is not a requirement for the function, though it is a bonus.   • How can i display a MFC CHtmlView inside a dialog?

One of the main problems seems that i'm builing all dialogs by hand without dialog resource files or the Visual Studio Application Wizards. So i would need pure C++ code that i can type into my Editor. There is also some reference to a "CWebBrowser2" control, but a grep on the VC directory does not give me any results, so where can i find this?
