• Newbie: get access privilege

  I am newbie on Linux Ubuntu machine. I logged in to the Ubuntu with username: student. There are some directories only allowed root user to access, for example /var/lib/mysql ,(I know I can use sudo to access but it is not what I want). If I want to get the access privilege on those directories with student account, is it so that I can run the following command : chown student: PATH_TO_ROOT_USER_PRIVILEGED_DIR and after that, I can access that directory by using my own account ? am I right? If I am right, then will root user lose the access privilege because I changed it to student user? If I am wrong, please tell me the right solution. P.S. please don't concern on what I am going to do on /var/lib/mysql directory, that is only my example, as I mentioned above, I mean generally *for those directories which only have root privilege*, can I use chown to change access privilege and will root user then loose the access because of the change made by chown ? I just wanna know the effect of chown.

• Menu tab completion for recent history in zsh

  I am interested in a potential zle widget for zsh. Is there a way to build a widget that mimics the kill-completion selectable menu? Essentially I want to be able to press , tab in vi-command-mode, or maybe !-tab-completion at the shell and get a list of recent history (or related history compared what is already entered at the commandline) that allows me to scroll through it and possibly select a relevant function to call or compare similar calls. Looking through the manual I stumbled onto a similar widget that I have mapped like so: # tab completion history menu (vicmd) autoload -z history-beginning-search-menu zle -N history-beginning-search-menu-space-end history-beginning-search-menu bindkey -M vicmd "\t" history-beginning-search-menu-space-end # emacs binding could be "\e\t"? (I wouldn't know) Therefore, if I enter vicmd and hit tab when I enter something like "grep", then I get a list of all grep calls in history. It also asks me for the list-number and it will perform the numbered item in history. If I enter a space and then try this, it lists ALL of my history history. This is fairly close to what I want, but there are some problems. For example, 1) it prints the entire list of relevant history and does not check the number of lines of the screen so it could easily blow up the space on the terminal; 2) when I type in numbers for selecting an item in history it does not show me the numbers I type, so I may make a mistake and have to start over again; 3) I would love to be able to hook in appearance tweaks. I was wondering if there exists more updated version of this widget or if there is any way to look at the source for kill-completion or history-beginning-search-menu to see if I could think of a way to do it.

  Hi, I am trying to page a webpage, so disable scrolling, then the second page is the same webpage scrolled down the page height. The problem I have is that the bottom of the first page often has 1/2 a line of text, then the second page has the bottom half of the line. Is there a way to ensure the entire line falls on one of the pages? Similar to Stanza etc? Thanks

I need a line with for example 3px of width but other line with 1px of width. Is that possible? • Should we hire someone who writes C in Perl?

  One of my colleagues recently interviewed some candidates for a job and one said they had very good Perl experience. Since my colleague didn't know Perl, he asked me for a critique of some code written (off-site) by that potential hire, so I had a look and told him my concerns (the main one was that it originally had no comments and it's not like we gave them enough time). However, the code works so I'm loathe to say no-go without some more input. Another concern is that this code basically looks exactly how I'd code it in C. It's been a while since I did Perl (and I didn't do a lot, I'm more a Python bod for quick scripts) but I seem to recall that it was a much more expressive language than what this guy used. I'm looking for input from real Perl coders, and suggestions for how it could be improved (and why a Perl coder should know that method of improvement). You can also wax lyrical about whether people who write one language in a totally different language should (or shouldn't be hired). I'm interested in your arguments but this question is primarily for a critique of the code. • Run a shell command with arguments from powershell script

  Hello, I need to extract and save a some tables from a remote SQL database using bcp. I would like to write a powershell script to invoke bcp for each table and save the data. So far I have this script that creates the necessary args for bcp. However I can not figure out how to pass the args to bcp. Every time I run the script it just shows the bcp help instead. • Using sed for introducing newline after each > in a +1 gigabyte large one-line text file

  I have a giant text file (about 1,5 gigabyte) with xml data in it. All text in the file is on a single line, and attempting to open it in any text editor (even the ones mentioned in this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/159521/text-editor-to-open-big-giant-huge-large-text-files ) either fails horribly or is totally unusable due to the text editor hanging when attempting to scroll. I was hoping to introduce newlines into the file by using the following sed command sed 's/>/>\n/g' data.xml > data_with_newlines.xml Sadly, this caused sed to give me a segmentation fault. From what I understand, sed reads the file line-by-line which would in this case mean that it attempts to read the entire 1,5 gig file in one line which would most certainly explain the segfault. However, the problem remains. How do I introduce newlines after each in the xml file? Do I have to resort to writing a small program to do this for me by reading the file character-by-character?

  I am writing a general file backup program. It searches the drive for files matching a set of types and then writes them to a folder on the desktop. I wrote it using xcopy on Windows XP but upon learning that xcopy was deprecated in favor of robocopy in Vista and newer, still wanting to maintain compatibility I decided to switch to the non-deprecated copy. This is where the problems begin. I'm trying to fix the copy routine. I thought I had everything sorted out, but it doesn't copy anything. My output is zero files copied for every iteration. Since the partial renders out as a Zend_View (allowing $this-app_store_icon for rendering), it seems like there should be a way to pass variables to be rendered.   I need to create a bootstrap for my WiX project I've tried using setupbld.exe but it will only allow me to create an executable that will show my UI or one that will behave as a silent installer but not both. I need to be able to run the resulting executable with argument that will tell it wether or not to show the UI during installation. I've found this post by John Robbins that explains how to re-build the setup.exe stub used in the creation of the bootstrap but I was hoping there is a simpler way to do what I need. Does anyone know of a way to create a bootstrap that I use to run either as a simple (with UI) install or as a silent install.

  Hi, I would like to plot multiple, perhaps thousands of line segments on a single 2D plot in Mathematica. These line segments would be determined from an algorithm that would detected and save each segments endpoints. Once the algorithm has determined all the line segments within a finite 2D plot domain and range (e.g., x = 0,4 and y=0,0.5), I would like to plot them all on a single plot.   Hello all I want to pass a javascript object (JSON) as an argument to another function. But i am getting following error: missing ] after element list the function is called on onclick event of href like "<a href='javascript:void(0);' onclick='javascript:openTab("+ sTab +");'>"+ sTab['SavedTab']['title'] +"</a><br/>"; When i pass whole value : sTab['SavedTab']['title'] , it works fine but i want to pass whole object, not just single value out of it. Please help me out. Thanks.
