• How do I create my own programming language and a compiler for it

  I am thorough with programming and have come across languages including BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL, LISP, LOGO, Java, C++, C, MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, Ruby, Perl, Javascript, Assembly and so on. I can't understand how people create programming languages and devise compilers for it. I also couldn't understand how people create OS like Windows, Mac, UNIX, DOS and so on. The other thing that is mysterious to me is how people create libraries like OpenGL, OpenCL, OpenCV, Cocoa, MFC and so on. The last thing I am unable to figure out is how scientists devise an assembly language and an assembler for a microprocessor. I would really like to learn all of these stuff and I am 15 years old. I always wanted to be a computer scientist some one like Babbage, Turing, Shannon, or Dennis Ritchie. I have already read Aho's Compiler Design and Tanenbaum's OS concepts book and they all only discuss concepts and code in a high level. They don't go into the details and nuances and how to devise a compiler or operating system. I want a concrete understanding so that I can create one myself and not just an understanding of what a thread, semaphore, process, or parsing is. I asked my brother about all this. He is a SB student in EECS at MIT and hasn't got a clue of how to actually create all these stuff in the real world. All he knows is just an understanding of Compiler Design and OS concepts like the ones that you guys have mentioned (ie like Thread, Synchronisation, Concurrency, memory management, Lexical Analysis, Intermediate code generation and so on)

• Soft lockup after upgrade - cannot install from live CD

  I dual-boot MacIntel Core 2 duo. nVidia graphics. Ran upgrade from ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 (64 bit). On restart ran into {numbers} Bug: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [swapper/0:1] Tried loading earlier kernel: same problem Tried re-installing ubuntu from a liveCD that has worked in the past: version 13.04. Same problem. Tried re-partitioning hard drive using Mac OS X disk utility and then installing ubuntu 14.04LTS from liveCD. Same problem. Not possible to verify liveCD disk (creates same "soft lockup" bug.) Tried installing from the liveCD with version 13.04 that I know works (that's how I got Ubuntu on this machine in the first place.) Same problem. I know this is not a hardware problem as OS X works just fine, I am using it right now on the same machine. I have been using various versions of Ubuntu for 2 years. Things I cannot do: Open a terminal Verify CD image Start ubuntu from CD (same soft lockup problem) This problem is similar to some other questions, none of which have been satisfactorily answered: Ubuntu 14.04 soft lockup on Vostro 3500 Cannot do fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04 while booting from DVD: "soft lockup" bug Live CD stalls when installing Ubuntu 13.10 UPDATE 6/11/14: Following some much-appreciated advice from bain (see below) I burned a 12.04LTS disk and started with kernel parameters: noapic, no1apic, acpi=off, nomodeset, elevator=deadline, and clocksource=jiffies. With all of these parameters I was able to load the 12.04LTS CD ("Try without installing"). It worked fine. However, as soon as I tried to install Ubuntu from the CD, my wired ethernet (eth0) connection would hang. There are already various askubuntu questions and bug reports about this problem, none of which had answers for me. (E.g., dhclient eth0 does nothing, none of the various reset commands does anything, manually setting IP &etc does nothing. I could reliably kill the ethernet connection by clicking "install ubuntu" every single time.) I could go ahead and install 12.04 without an internet connection, but the install would freeze after mostly completing (I tried several times.) There were some relevant error messages in the details of the install output script that, IIRC, had to do with searching for missing files and not being able to access eth0 (internet) to get them. To be honest I gave up at that point and I'm not sure I wrote those down. If I find some notes I will post them. At this point I no longer have Ubuntu on my system. I wiped the partitions and am using exclusively OS X. I am leaving this question in case it helps anyone else with similar problems. I love open source and I love Linux, and the next machine I get I will probably just build from Arch. At the moment I miss repositories and a lot of other things about Ubuntu, but the OS X terminal is 'nix, I can pretty much use all the open source apps I like, and while I am not a fan of the Apple software it gets the job done for me. Unlike Ubuntu, which can't even install. I realize this isn't necessarily a place for a soapbox speech, but when I first installed 12.04 several years ago there were already people in the community complaining that Canonical was going too "commercial". But I loved it. Several years later and all I've seen is Canonical adding more not-so-useful bells and whistles to Ubuntu while continually failing to fix basic problems on upgrades. With a dual-boot (and sometimes triple-boot) system it always took me some tweaking to get an upgrade to work, and to some extent that is okay. But at this point I feel like Canonical ought to just put a price tag on Ubuntu. All I see is more commercialism and advertising and product tie-ins, and ongoing problems do not get fixed. I am a big fan of open-source, not-for profit enterprise. I am also a big fan of for-profit enterprise, which certainly has its place and usefulness. I am not a fan of companies who pretend to be in favor of open source but really are just out to make a buck, and IMNSHO that is what Canonical has become. This is a great community and I wish you all the best, but my next install of Linux will not be Ubuntu.

• Permission Mystery - apt-get and other system utilities have 000 permissions

  I'm trying to track down this strange behavoir for years now. Always after installing software-updates the permissions of a lot of system-tools are broken as you can see below. I am reasonable convinced that the machine is not owned by someone else. Regular security updates + grsecurity kernel + pax + daily rkhunter runs. Besides that there is no incentive for an attacker to fiddle in such obvious ways with the system. I installed bastille linux (http://bastille-linux.sourceforge.net/) und tried to deinstall it later, so the problems could be related to that. However I don't see how this can happen in a regular way after updates. System: Ubuntu 10.04, recently updated to Ubuntu 12.04 but the problem persists. Apt-Configuration in /etc/apt/ looks sane to me. But nevertheless - could here be the source of the trouble? • Can i create a virtual machine on my laptop to be used with another monitor?

  OK, the scenario is like this... I have my laptop... and I have another user without a unit. He has only a keyboard, mouse and a monitor. Is there anyway that I can make him use my computer by creating a virtual environment which he will access, BUT, without interfering with my work. I use my laptop and view my OS from the laptop monitor. I create a virtual environment (some OS probably XP) and run it. The virtual environment is displayed in the connected monitor and the other user uses it using the extra keyboard/mouse and the monitor but without interfering my screen! Is this possible? Stupid? Futuristic? Need more hardware?

• Big noise from Power Supply Unity Fa? Should I replace it immediately?

  Recently, I started to get a large noise from my PC when switched on. After some time, it disappears. I discovered that the issue is with the Power Supply Unit. Does this mean I have a failing PSU? Will it harm the PC if I didn't replace it immediately? Several years ago I bought a new computer casing which is very weird. Its small and compact. Normally, we have the PSU in the top. But in here, the PSU is on the bottom and right below the hard drive. Recently, two of my hard drives started to show problems. Read errors and bad sectors. • Lubuntu 14.04 graphics problem on portege r100

  first of all I have to say that I am not an expert. I have installed Lubuntu 14.04 on my Portege R100. The problem is that the graphics session does not start. Actually I can do all but only by command line. I try to start Xsession but nothing happens. Actually by typing startx the system stop to works. I read several threads on this topic but I did not find such kind of problem. There is something similar about portege r100 concerning lowgraphics mode but the porblem I have seems to be different because graphics session does not start. Can anyone help me ? Thank you Best

• Unstable Wifi and Spontaneous Low-graphic Error with Pavilion DV4

  I've been having numerous problems with connectivity through WiFi. It had been working for a few days and now it doesn't. On top of that around 40% of every time I turn on the laptop it shows "System running in low-graphics" error and I'm unable to view the desktop (sometimes not even able to access terminal), therefore having to manually power-down until it finally works. • HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

• How can I install an old version of libc on 12.04 and is it safe to do so?

  I am building an application on 12.04 and I need to run it on an embedded device. The device has libc-2.8.90.so on it and my dev machine has libc-2.15.so on it. I would like to install libc-2.8.90 onto my dev machine and attempt to link it to my application. I have searched at the Ubuntu software centre for libc-2.8.90 but I cannot find anything resembling it. Is there a way to install this on my machine from command line?? Also will my system be safe having 2 installed versions of libc at the same time? Can it lead to any instability?

  I am trying to dual boot my acer which came with windows 8 pre-installed. I tried using the tutorial here doing it the simple way but when I load Ubuntu from my transcended flash drive it says that there is no other operating system installed. I tried partitioning my hard drive but I seem to have 3 recovery partitions and even though I have 485GB free I can only allocate 100GB to the new partition. I would like to have most of my hard drive allocated to Ubuntu and just use the windows for programs like microsoft office.

• Cannot see user desktop when I log in

  I am very new to Ubuntu. I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7. I am using Virtual Box and just installed the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO as a new Virtual Machine within Virtual Box. Everything seemed to install just fine and I even added the Guest Additions under Devices. The problem is that I cannot see the menus and my login information. The virtual machine says it is running; however, I do not have the Applications, Places, System, etc. tray to select from. Is there something I am supposed to do after logging in to get this? I entered my password and everything seemed fine, I just don't have those drop-down menus available... Thank You! Jesi

So all in all my question here is should I make the framework aware of subclasses or should I add a new Component like object that is used for logic.

• Slot load DVD burner options for standard desktop case

  I need a new DVD burner (internal) for my father-in-law's computer. He's apparently broken the current one - he forgot to push the tray back in after doing something and hit it with his chair. Given this, I'd like to get him a slot-loading DVD burner, so as to avoid the problem entirely. I need an internal device, and I'll be mounting in a 5 1/4" bay. He doesn't need any super-spec device - as long as it can read/write all the standard formats, it's good. I see a few options at newegg.com, but they all have mixed reviews. Are there any out there that are generally seen as reliable? How does one go about mounting slimline devices in a standard 5 1/4" bay? Is there a standard faceplate kit for that?

  I recently updated from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS and for the first time it worked! However, whenever I move my mouse over an application icon on the unity shell, the animation takes forever to show me what the name of the application is ( A.k.a the tooltip ). The same happens with menus and sub-menus. Other than that, it is overall in general, slow. I just want to know if there are any tips to fix this or make my system faster. • What exactly is a chroot? Is it similar to a simultaneous dual boot?

  It has been suggested to me that the use of a chroot might solve my problem of building an application that must run on an embedded device. I have inferred from this description that it is somehow similar to creating the embedded environment locally on my machine which I can then use to develop on from my desktop development machine. Is this the right way to look at the functionality or have I totally misunderstood? However, as I am a total linux novice, I am a bit concerned that as I do not entirely know what I am doing is there anyway that I could end up with an unusable system?? I'd like to make my router forward incoming requests to my computer, so that everyone on the Internet could fetch data from my computer using the Apache server. However, I was wondering if there are many risks in this. For example: Could someone get full control of my computer this way? Is my computer more exposed to secutiry risks?   everyone i am newto these linux stuffs. Currently i'm a user of Windows8.1 . When windows 8 was roling out i was like i'm never going to leave and will be always stick to windows8 but now i think it's time to switch linux because being in windows forever i don't think i can do something very good .I wanted to be OpenSource :) . So i really dont have any idea about linux . For me the best distro is Ubuntu and Kubuntu offcourse the latest release . So what i'm afraid of switching to linux is its compability .The compatibility i'm talking about is with the hardware's and driver's . For eg sometime after fresh install of windows we need to install the display,usb and wifi drivers to function . For some computer or brands those driver's are hard to find and i can't even think of linux how hard are they to find if it needs installing drivers. So my main question is that do i need to install the drivers for my wifi adapters display and some other stuffs or the distro i choosed i.e Ubuntu 14.0.4 consists of those dirvers and what about the 64 and 32bit . My machines is 64bit aso do i need to install the 64bit one . I mean i know the advantages of installing the 64 bit one but like windows is it kinda hard to find softwares for the 64 bit one . Or the 32 bit is recommended . And Yes I will be highly appreciated for the answers to my questions . Thank You :)

The default web site for this machine MOJITO is configured to use ASP.NET 1.1 and the IP address is set to (All Unassigned). The production versions of the latter 2 webservices run on the MOJITO machine (named ZipeeeService and EmergencyService respectively). Can my staging versions of the above webservices (named zVersion2wsSQL and zVersion2wsEmergency respectively) co-exist on the same web server with the same IP address? Please note that when I test the zVersion2wsSQL webservice independently (from INETMGR right-mouse and click Browse) it works as expected (i.e. presenting all the methods of the webservice) like this snippet: GetMessageByType MessageName="Get_x0020_Message_x0020_By_x0020_Type" I can test this webmethod by clicking on it and it presents the Test dialog (because it takes a simple datatype and I am invoking it on localhost (i.e. MOJITO): **Get Message By Type** **Test** To test the operation using the HTTP POST protocol, click the 'Invoke' button. Parameter Value iMsgType: _______ [INVOKE button] SOAP 1.1 ....etc. I fear I may have rambled with too much information so I will stop but I hope someone can help me as I cannot understand why this request results in a "not found".   I get this error when i try to load a VS 2008 project from TFS (Source control) The project file has been moved renamed or not on your computer After i click OK the project says "unavailable". What is the problem? how do i resolve this? i never had this problem before. Some blogs said to delete the .suo file. But i cant locate the .suo file. I deleted the entire project on my local computer so that the next time it opens it will create a new one, but i still get same error. any ideas?
