  • Architect Day Artifacts

    In the last eight days the Oracle Technology Network Architect Day tour has stopped in Dallas, Anaheim (Disneyland, to be precise) , and at Oracle HQ in Redwood Shores,  CA. I was on-scene for the Dallas event, where I pulled a TMZ-style ambush on Chris Benedict from the Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group to capture this short video.     The other presenters escaped. But the slide decks from several of the presentations are now available on Slideshare:  IT Optimization: Reduce Data Center Costs and Set the Foundation for Future Growth as presented by Alan Levine, Oracle Enterprise Architect Senior Director Implementing Applications with SOA and Application Integration Architecture as presented by Vish Gaitonde, Director, Ecosystem Strategy, Application Integration Architecture Application Grid: Platform for Virtualization and Consolidation of Your Java Applications as presented by Sam Shah, Director, SOA and Integration, Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group Infrastructure Consolidation and Virtualization as presented by Steve Bennett, also a Director with the Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group Security in a Cloudy Architecture as presented by Geri Born, Security Specialist with the Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group I'll post more Architect Day presentations as soon as I track them down. That audio, as well as audio from the panel discussion and a roundtable from the Dallas event, will be available soon as ArchBeat podcast programs. If you attended one of these events, a big thanks. I need to build these factories in code because they map strings to delegates. I have a service that contains several of these factories. The mission is to make these factory classes available to a content processor. Neither the processor itself nor the context it uses as a parameter have any known hooks to attach an IServiceProvider or equivalent. Any ideas?

  • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

    This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them.   • How could I manage Google Adsense to approve my Web App? It keeps denying it

    Google adsense keeps denying my app from having ads, because of an "insufficient content" issue. I manage a Web Application that allows the users to set Youtube Videos as Alarm Clocks. It includes an in-site Youtube search to retrieve videos from user queries and lists the users alarms. The site has a good traffic (500 users per day), is currently promoted by Google in Google Chrome Webstore, and the ajax requests are crawlable, following Google's guidelines (https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/). Although I understand there is not much content, beyond the user-generated, I really don't what else should I include in the site. Perhaps adding contact and about pages, and maybe another section would increase the navigation. Google argues I need a "fully launched and functioning site, allowing users to navigate throughout your site with a menu, sitemap, or appropiate links". They also ask for "full sentences or paragraphs" Isn't a Google Adsense solutions for Web Applications? Would all the web-apps have to include useless navigable subpages?

  • Clouds Everywhere But not a Drop of Rain – Part 3

    I was sharing with you how a broad-based transformation such as cloud will increase agility and efficiency of an organization if process re-engineering is part of the plan.  I have also stressed on the key enterprise requirements such as “broad and deep solutions, “running your mission critical applications” and “automated and integrated set of capabilities”. Let me walk you through some key cloud attributes such as “elasticity” and “self-service” and what they mean for an enterprise class cloud. I will also talk about how we at Oracle have taken a very enterprise centric view to developing cloud solutions and how our products have been specifically engineered to address enterprise cloud needs. Cloud Elasticity and Enterprise Applications Requirements Easy and quick scalability for a short-period of time is the signature of cloud based solutions. It is this elasticity that allows you to dynamically redistribute your resources according to business priorities, helps increase your overall resource utilization, and reduces operational costs by allowing you to get the most out of your existing investment. Most public clouds are offering a instant provisioning mechanism of compute power (CPU, RAM, Disk), customer pay for the instance-hours(and bandwidth) they use, adding computing resources at peak times and removing them when they are no longer needed. This type of “just-in-time” serving of compute resources is well known for mid-tiers “state less” servers such as web application servers and web servers that just need another machine to start and run on it but what does it really mean for an enterprise application and its underlying data? Most enterprise applications are not as quite as “state less” and justifiably so. As such, how do you take advantage of cloud elasticity and make it relevant for your enterprise apps? This is where Cloud meets Grid Computing. At Oracle, we have invested enormous amount of time, energy and resources in creating enterprise grid solutions. All our technology products offer built-in elasticity via clustering and dynamic scaling. With products like Real Application Clusters (RAC), Automatic Storage Management, WebLogic Clustering, and Coherence In-Memory Grid, we allow all your enterprise applications to benefit from Cloud elasticity –both vertically and horizontally - without requiring any application changes. A number of technology vendors take a rather simplistic route of starting up additional or removing unneeded VM as the "Cloud Scale-Out" solution. Rather they just talk to a single database and the database software takes care of aggregating resources across multiple hardware components. It is the technologies like these that truly make a cloud solution relevant for enterprises.  For customers who are looking for a next generation hardware consolidation platform, our engineered systems (e.g. Exadata, Exalogic) not only provide incredible amount of performance and capacity, they also reduce the data center complexity and simplify operations. Assemble, Deploy and Manage Enterprise Applications for Cloud Products like Oracle Virtual assembly builder (OVAB) resolve the complex problem of bringing the cloud speed to complex multi-tier applications. Successful organizations keep business benefits as the first and foremost cloud objective. On the other hand, those who approach this purely as a technology project are more likely to fail. Think about where you want to be in 3-5 years before you get started. Your long terms objectives should determine what your first step ought to be. As obvious as it may seem, more people than not make the first move without knowing where they are headed.  Don’t make the mistake of equating cloud to virtualization and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). Spinning a VM on-demand will give some short term relief to your IT staff but is unlikely to solve your larger business problems. As such, even if IaaS is your first step towards a more comprehensive cloud, plan the roadmap around those higher level services before you begin. And ask your vendors on how they are going to be your partners in this journey. Capabilities like self-service access and chargeback/showback are absolutely critical if you really expect your cloud to be transformational. Your business won't see the full benefits of the cloud until it empowers them with same kind of control and transparency that they are used to while using a public cloud service.  Evaluate the benefits of integration, as opposed to blindly following the best-of-breed strategy. Integration is a huge challenge and more so in a cloud environment. There are enormous costs associated with stitching a solution out of disparate components and even more in maintaining it. How can I make it stream and play as it's still downloading? Or is this up to the client/receiver application to manage?

  • Etag configuration with multiple apache servers or CDN / How does Google do ETags?

    I have an application which is served from two apache2 servers and I want to configure the ETags on static content. In the future I would also like to use a CDN. I see that this is supposed to be a problem because the Etag information will be different from server to server... The ETag format for Apache 1.3 and 2.x is inode-size-timestamp. Although a given file may reside in the same directory across multiple servers, and have the same file size, permissions, timestamp, etc., its inode is different from one server to the next. So if you're using more than one webserver to host your app (like 90% of the webapps you use everyday do), it's supposed to be an issue. However I see Google uses Etags, and certainly they use multiple servers and CDN and edge caching, etc... I get a 304 response for any cached Google content. How do they do it? How do you get around the multiple server issue? Is there a way to configure this with Apache?

  • System.IO.FileLoadException

    Hi All, I have got this error when using Enterprise Library 3.1 May 2007 version. We are developing a product and have a common lib directory beneath the Subversion Trunk directory <\Trunk\Lib\ into which we put all the third party DLLs. Inside this we have Microsoft\EnterpriseLibrary\v3.1 in which we have copied all the dlls from \Program Files\Microsoft Enterprise Library May2007\bin. Everything was working properly until one of the developers installed the source code on this machine. There were some dlls copied at the end of the source code installation and once that was done, he is not able to run the project anymore. He always gets this error 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data, Version=3.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)' What is the problem here? I thought that when the source code was installed it was just supposed to build everything and copy in the bin directory within the source code parent directory. Also we have copied the Dlls from Microsoft Enterprise Library May 2007\bin directory into our product development directory and references into our project with a copylocal flag set to true. Can anyone help me out here RK

    Hi, I've a window that will have an unknown amount of text fields, determined by the content of a remote server. In high level terms, how should I go about this? Create a custom view or create an empty window with a backing NSWindowController and then add stuff to it when the window is opened? I've seen the examples on the O'Reilly Cocoa book and those effectively create a custom NSView. Is this the right way to do it, 8 year later?

  • Center content of UISCrollView when smaller

    I have an UIImageView inside a UIScrollView which I use for zooming and scrolling. If the image/content of the scroll view if bigger than the scroll view everything works fine. However, when the image becomes smaller than the scroll view, it sticks to the top left corner of the scroll view. I would like to keep it centered, like the Photos app. Any ideas or examples about keeping the content of the UIScrollView centered when smaller? I am working with iPhone 3.0. The following code almost works.
