• Common mistakes which lead to corrupted invariants

  My main source of income is web development and through this I have come to enjoy the wonders of programming as my knowledge of different languages has increased over the years through work and personal play. At some point I reached a decision that my college education was not enough and that I wanted to go back to school to get a university degree in either computer science or software engineering. I have tried a number of things in my life and it took me a while before I found something that I feel is a passion and this is it. There is one aspect of this area of study that I find throws me off though. I find the formal methods of proving program correctness a challenge. It is not that I have trouble writing code correctly, I can look at an algorithm and see how it is correct or flawed but I struggle sometimes to translate this into formal definitions. I have gotten perfect or near perfect marks on every programming assignment I have done at the college level but I recently got a swath of textbooks from a guy from univeristy of waterloo and found that I have had trouble when it comes to a few of the formalisms. Well at this point its really just one thing specifically, It would really help me if some of you could provide to me some good examples of common mistakes which lead to corrupted invariants, especially in loops. I have a few software engineering and computer science textbooks but they only show how things should be. I would like to know how things go wrong so that it is easier to recognize when it happens. Its almost embarrassing to broach this subject because formalisms are really basic foundations upon which matters of substance are built. I want to overcome this now so that it does not hinder me later.

• Where did my form go in SharePoint 2010!?

  So I was working on an intro to development demo for the Central NJ .Net User Group and I found a few kinks.  I opened up a form to custom in InfoPath and Quick Published it wouldn’t work.  I imed my InfoPath guru friend, Lori Gowin, she said try to run a regular publish.  The form was still not showing up in SharePoint.  I could open it and it knew my changes, but it would just not render in a browser.  So I decided to create a form from scratch without using the button customize form in the list.  That did not work, so it was google time.  Finally I found this blog post: http://qwertconsulting.wordpress.com/2009/12/22/list-form-from-infopath-2010-is-blank/.  Once I went into the configuration wizard and turned on the State Service everything worked perfectly fine.  It was great.  See I normally don’t run through the wizard and check the box to turn all the services on in SharePoint.  I usually like a leaner environment plus I want to learn how everything works.  So I guess most people had no idea what was going on in the background.  To get InfoPath to work you need the session state.  It’s doing some type of caching in the browser.  Very neat stuff.  I hope this helps one of you out there some day. • TFS 2010 Build: Dealing with the API restriction error

  Recently I’ve come across this error a couple of times when running builds that exeucte unit tests using Test containers: API restriction: The assembly 'file:///C:\Builds\<path>\myassembly.dll' has already loaded from a different location. It cannot be loaded from a new location within the same appdomain. Every time I’ve got this error, the project has been a web application, and the path to the assembly points down to the _PublishedWebsites directory that is created beneath the Binaries folder during a team build. The error description really says it all (although slightly cryptic), when using test containers, MSTest needs to load all assemblies and see if they contain any unit tests. During this serach, it finds the ‘myassembly.dll’ in two different locations. First it is found directly beneth the Binaries folder, and then it is alos found beneath the _PublishedWebsites\Project\bin folder. The reason is that the default setting for test containers in a TFS 2010 build definition is **\*test*.dll:   This pattern means that MSTest will search recursively for all assemblies beneath the Binaries folder, and during the search it will find the MyAssembly.dll twice. The solution is simple, set the Test assembly file specification property to *test*.dll instead, this will disable the recursive search:

• Add physical disk to KVM virtual machine

  I'm setting up a file server (nas4free) as a KVM virtual machine on a Ubuntu Server 12.04 system. How do I add physical hard drives directly to the VM so they can be used by the guest (nas4free), but not the host? Specifically the hard drive I'd like to mount is /dev/sda (which is not currently mounted on the server.) So far I've found two solutions but I haven't gotten either to work. The first is from Server Fault where it's suggested to use virt-manager. I haven't gotent this to work because when I try to select an existing drive nothing is being listed. My best guess as to why this is, is because I'm using virt-manager over ssh and not connecting as root, should that make a difference? The second solution I've found here is to just run the command (modified for my system) qm set nas4free -virtio /dev/sda but that seems to require proxmox which I don't have installed and doesn't seem to be in the default repositories? Finally, once the above is sorted out and I can mount the drive directly to the VM, does anyone have an experience with whether the drive should be mounted to the VM as scsi, ide, or virtio? (I know virtio was recommend in the linked ServerFault page, but I hadn't heard of it before now since I mainly use VMWare). Thanks for your help!!!

• How do you put price on your source code?

  I was asked to sell the source code of small utility app I did years ago with existing users of this app. I tried investigating how to put price on the source code and haven't come up with a good solution so far. I first tried searching the net, but information I found there are somehow far from reality. Then I found a few people how also sold their source code with users as well. But their price seems unrealistic (too high). For example, one person had an app which price was around $200 for 1 user and he had 80 users. He sold the source with users for $30k. How did he come up with this price? Is it a good price if I charge the code by formula: num_of_users x app_price + app_price x num_of_new_users_in_one_year ? This means that I count the price by selling each user for the price of the app then adding the amount of money I earn in 1 year from this app. If this is a good formula, what shall I do with sources who do not have users yet?

  I've spent the past 7 years focused primarily on code and database performance.  It's an area that I have a passion for, as well as a propensity.  But what I've found is that its very hard to change the culture of a development environment.  You can teach performance, you can encourage performance, you might see slight shift in how devs think about performance.  But without full management backing and support you wont get long lasting changes in the development culture.  And in the end, you are back to being the "Perf Guy", fixing performance design flaws, after the fact, one by one by one. Which is why last year I asked my boss to changed my title and responsibilities to more naturally align with the team I was working for.  So now I'm a Computing Research Engineer (vague, I know), researching in the field of Big Data analytics and visualization. I've found this change revitalizing and a lot of fun.  And given the nature of Big Data (its, um…big) the performance aspects are always ever present.

• SQL SERVER – Right Aligning Numerics in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

  SQL Server Management Studio is my most favorite tool and the comfort it provides to user is sometime very amazing. Recently I was retrieving numeric data in SSMS and I found it is very difficult to read them as they were all right aligned. Please pay attention to following image, you will notice that it is not easier to read the digits as we are used to read the numbers which are right aligned. I immediately thought before I go for any other tricks I should check the query properties. I right clicked on query properties and I found following option. I checked option Right align numeric values and it just worked fine. Do you have any other similar tricks which do you practice often. I prefer to also include column headers in the result set as it gives me proper perspective of which column I have selected. Sometime little tips like this helps a lot in productivity, I encourage you to share your tips. I will publish it with due credit. • Blog/CMS software with editing style like Stack Exchange

  I have been updating a Wordpress blog lately and found the turnaround time for content creation and editing is much worse than for Stack Overflow posts. Part of this has to do with being original compositions rather than riffing off a question. But part of it is the software. I am looking for CMS/blog software that has an overall editing experience similar to Stack Overflow. The most important features I'm looking for: Inline editing (mostly) Real-time preview on the same page are all important features for speeding up data entry. Markdown support (with inline and block-level code support) Syntax hilighting The features I must maintain from my self-hosted Wordpress: Somewhat popular/supported software, with extensibility support Self hostable Will work with MySql Wordpress has plugins for all these, but they don't necessarily work together. For example I've found a few markdown-on-save plugins, but I doubt those have a chance of ever supporting inline editing or real time previews. Also the most popular syntax hilighting plugins don't support inline code blocks, and I doubt previews would work with other syntax hilighting methods. If I get a wiki/web page content creation system along with it, or somehow integrate this into GitHub (with all the features I requested) I'll accept those as side benefits :) Formed as a question: Are there any pieces of content creation software for making a blog that support an editing style like Stack Exchange and Stack Overflow? Or magic combinations of Wordpress plugins that offer the same?

  I have a CardScan 60 II device and installed SANE in my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop. The problem is I can't make scanimage find the device. • Ambiguous in the namespace problem

  From the last few days, I was ignoring an error that keep coming at the compile time. I spent some two hours on it before but didn’t get it work. The error is quit confusing and of course difficult to manage. 'ApplicationSettingsBase' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Configuration' 'MailMessage' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Net.Mail' And there are couple of other similar errors that is pointing to some ambiguous references in my project.  The confusing part is that the MailMessage object throws similar error when you are importing the old and new email namespace. For example, Imports System.Web.Mail Imports System.Net.Mail So if you are only encountering ambiguous problem in MailMessage object. It is more possible that you have define both the namespaces in your code behind which is actually confusing the compiler about your referencing object. The quick solve for this problem is that remove Imports System.Web.Mail and it should work smooth. But with me, I never used the old asp.net mail namespace in my project. Then I start looking at my references and luckily I found the problem there. Follow the steps below to investigate the issue 1. Go to your project 2. Then references 3. Right click on “System” and see properties. it should point to the following path x:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\System.dll Where x is name of your operating system directory. This was the problem with my project. I had my operating system install on “D” drive and some how it is pointing to “C” drive which is the root cause of this problem. After that I verify all my references and found 5 –6 assemblies that are pointing to wrong path and get it worked. Also note, the problem can occur in any type of project either it is website , web application etc.

• Help find correct alsa model for onboard sound (alc887?) that will work with jack and have correct mixer setup

  I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 motherboard. I am using Jack for sound - connected to ALSA. I am running Ubuntu 12.04. aplay -l reports card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog] The problem is that the default setup, that alsa decides to use, causes stuttering and xruns no matter how generous I set the frames/period or periods/buffer etc. Also, Jack works fine if I plug in an external USB sound system and use that. My processor is an AMD phenom x4 945, and I have 8GB ram, and Video card is Geforce GTX550 Ti, all of which should be quite capable enough. I also tried Pulseaudio and that works fine, but I need to use Jack At first I thought it might be an interrupt conflict, but I have found that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf causes it to play correctly, but the limited mixer setup lacks controls I need - so this setup isn't good enough. Still, it seems to prove it isn't a hardware conflict. I have tried many other models, such as 3stack, 6stack, auto and even basic, and they all suffer from the stuttering. I eventually found "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel" works without stuttering, and mixer is much closer to what it needs to be. Can anyone help on how to get a correct and accurate model for ALSA to use? • Couldn't make Angry birds to work on wine

  I could run Notepad++ easily but I fail to run the Angry bird exe. Whenever I open the exe, I see one of my screen flickrs a bit (as lines and not the whole screen) and nothing happens. Any ideas?   I am trying to connect to the MS SQL database using freetds and unixodbc. I have read various guides how to do it, but no one works fine for me. When I try to connect to the database using isql tool, I get the following error: $ isql -v TS username password [IM002][unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified [ISQL]ERROR: Could not SQLConnect Have anybody already successfully established the connection to the MS SQL database using freetds and unixodbc on Ubuntu 12.04? • Dell Latitude will not boot after fresh Ubuntu 12.10 installation. Black screen

  I have an old dell latitude d610 that I've just installed ubuntu 12.10 onto, and now unfortunately it will not complete booting up. The screen flashes purple but then fades out and dies. I'm fairly sure there is an issue with graphics drivers, as I had to turn on "nomodeset" in the options when installing off a DVD to see the installer, but I'm very new to linux and don't know terribly much at all apart from what I've read on the net. I have been able to hold down shift and bring up GRUB, and entered into recovery mode, and when I enter into the low graphics mode, the xserver log file says it can detect a screen but found none with a useable configuration, then goes on to say a fatal server error has occurred and no screen have been found at all, telling me to check a log file at "/var/log/xorg.0.log" I have no idea how to check this specific log file! Attempting to actually go further than this in low graphics mode and restart the display simply artefacts the screen. It is all very strange and annoying because I did once by random have the machine boot completely for no apparent reason, but upon restarting the issue reoccurred.

He started off in a rather confusing who’s on first fashion.  It seems that one of his tester was originally supposed to give the talk, but then it was decided that it would be better to have someone who does development present a testing topic.  This didn’t hinder the content of the talk in the least.  He broke the process down in a logical manner that would be straight forward to understand if not implement. Francis hit the main areas we usually think of such as tombstoning, network connectivity and asynchronous code, but he approached them with tools they we may not have thought of until now.  He relied heavily on Fiddler to intercept and change the behavior of network requests. • Triangulation A* (TA*) pathfinding algorithm

  I need help understanding the Triangle A* (TA*) algorithm that is described by Demyen in his paper Efficient Triangulation-Based Pathfinding, on pages 76-81. He describes how to adapt the regular A* algorithm for triangulation, to search for other possibly more optimal paths, even after the final node is reached/expanded. Regular A* stops when the final node is expanded, but this is not always the best path when used in a triangulated graph. This is exactly the problem I'm having. The problem is illustrated on page 78, Figure 5.4: I understand how to calculate the g and h values presented in the paper (page 80). And I think the search stop condition is: if (currentNode.fCost > shortestDistanceFound) { // stop break; } where currentNode is the search node popped from the open list (priority queue), which has the lowest f-score. shortestDistanceFound is the actual distance of the shortest path found so far. But how do I exclude the previously found paths from future searches? Because if I do the search again, it will obviously find the same path. Do I reset the closed list? I need to modify something, but I don't know what it is I need to change. The paper lacks pseudocode, so that would be helpful.

  The Unity Application Block (Unity) is a lightweight extensible dependency injection container with support for constructor, property, and method call injection. It’s a great library for facilitating Inversion of Control and the recent version supports AOP as well. However, when it comes to performance, it’s CPU hungry. In fact it’s so CPU hungry that it makes it impossible to make it work at Internet Scale. I was investigating some CPU issue on a portal that gets around 3MM hits per day and I found unusually high CPU. Here’s why: I did some CPU profiling on my open source project Dropthings and found that the highest CPU is consumed by Unity’s Resolve<>(). There’s no funky use of Unity in the project. Straightforward Register<>() and Resolve<>(). But as you can see, Resolve<>() is consuming significantly high CPU even after the site is warm and has been running for a while. Then I tried Munq, which is a basic Dependency Injection Container. It has everything you will usually need in a regular project. It boasts to be the fastest DI out there. So, I converted all Unity code to Munq in Dropthings and did a CPU profile and Whala!   There’s no trace of any Munq calls anywhere. That proves Munq is a lot faster than Unity.

• Installing 12.04 within 11.04

  I recently installed 11.04 from an installation disk (overwriting Windows in the process). I know 11.04 is no longer supported but I had no problems subsequently upgrading it to 12.04 (via 11.10) a couple of months ago on another device. This time though, things are different. I can't upgrade through update manager because Ubuntu then tells me I have no internet connection, which is (obviously incorrect). I have tried to circumvent the problem by downloading the 12:04 iso from ubuntu.com directly but now I'm troubled by something else. The download is succesfull but after mounting the iso I can't interact with it. When I try to access the Wubi it gives me the following message: Archive: /home/lars/.cache/.fr-7g75Fe/wubi.exe [/home/lars/.cache/.fr-7g75Fe/wubi.exe] End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/lars/.cache/.fr-7g75Fe/wubi.exe or /home/lars/.cache/.fr-7g75Fe/wubi.exe.zip, and cannot find /home/lars/.cache/.fr-7g75Fe/wubi.exe.ZIP, period. As I am stuck, I also tried to install kernel-devel with yum, still fruitless: root@ubuntu# yum install kernel-devel Setting up Install Process No package kernel-devel available. Nothing to do Now I've no idea how to correct this. Any ideas?
