  • Installing Windows 7 on a BSOD Windows Vista (ASAP)

    On a previous question i posted, i asked for help on fixing my windows vista box because it keeps going to blue screen. No one seems to have the answer, so now i want to install Windows 7. I want to know if i can install 7 without having to reformat my hard drive and having to lose all my files. I've already confirmed the hardware is working because i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my external hard drive and it runs on my system fine.   • DVD Drive Failing on Windows 7

    I have x64 Windows 7 running on an ASUS M50VM. The DVD drive works completely unreliably if not at all. But the story is not that simple so bear with me...here are the gory details. When I first got the machine it came with Windows XP and I upgraded it to Windows Vista X64 and the DVD worked fine. When Windows 7 RC2 came out I tried it on a Virtual Machine and I liked it so much that I upgraded the machine to Win7 RC1. The DVD worked fine. Of course, RC1 was going to start spontaneously rebooting, so when Windows 7 was released I DID A CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 7. Just to clarify...by clean install I mean I did a FORMAT of the HARD DRIVE and INSTALLED it from scratch. EVER since then the DVD mostly doesn't work. I can sometime read from disk but that will often hang. (Please see my description below of HANG for details.) CD or DVD writes ALWAYS fail with a HANG (I have done a successful write only one time.) Here is what I mean by HANG... *Explorer Window is unresponsive. *Any software accessing the DVD drive is unresponsive. *The DVD tray will not eject. *Using a paper clip will eject but the disk is usually spinning real hard. *Attempting to shut down windows will fail. I have waited as long as ten minutes but the whole OS seems to hang. I do a hard shutdown. *Sometimes accessing the DVD (when it does not cause a HANG) will still fail and the device will actually seem to disappear from the system until I reboot. A couple of other things. It is NOT a hardware failure. It is the Windows OS. I know this because I swapped out my DVD drive with a friend with the same model...his machine is fine (he is still running Vista X64) and my machine still fails. For what it is worth. I swapped out my primary disk with the INTEL 160GB SSD.   • P2V using Acronis True Image Home 10 and Windows 7

    I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

    We have on the company I work for an application built in Delphi V with Crystal Reports 8. We all know that Crystal & Delphi can be temperamental sometimes and the worst thing is, nearly no detail on the error. Also there is a big lack of documentation on the web about this. There's lot of people with similar issue but no solution. The error I'm talking about in particular is the one on the image below. This happens when trying to print any Crystal Reports on screen. This has happened sometimes in the clients computer and it was hard for us to replicate on our environment. Since it's an old version of Crystal it is very hard to find any helpful documentation to know the exact source of the problem.

  • Using 2-port LSI 2308-8e card to control 24 SAS HDDs

    I would like to rely on a RAID-on-chip solution to control 24 SAS hard drives in a direct-attached environment. How would you approach this to get best bandwidth given that I'd like to spend less than $10,000 on the interconnect. I've read that LSI 2308 chip can easily handle 8-drive SSD RAID6 in hardware. I'd like to harness its power to control 24 SAS hard drives over an expander in an external enclosure. Currently I use an Infortrend S24S-G2240 external enclosure. It provides its own controller and expander. I'd like to use LSI 2308 controller for RAID6 somehow instead of the mystery controller in the enclosure. P.S. I tried to create SAS-expander as a tag, but my rep on this site is low.

  • What solutions do I have to enforce memory limit on PHP server?

    I would like to enforce memory limit on a folder basis (and have it applied on subfolders) but I don't want the user able to change the memory limit. I know I can disable ini_set and I know I can enforce a hard limit or deny ini_set with Suhosin. With the first one, I doubt it will block changing it from the user.ini file, for the second, the user may still be able to change it to the hard limit I enforce with Suhosin. In both cases, I would prefer to not entierly block ini_set because it may have a legit use for other settings. In case it is important, I'm using PHP version 5.4.4 with nginx (PHP in FPM mode)

  • g++ in Knoppix 6 LiveCD

    To avoid the inevitable, let me put this in context. I am instructing an Intro to Unix course this semester and the students are using Knoppix 6.4.3 off the LiveCD. They are not required to install the system to their hard drive, and I would like to not require them to, however they do have use of a USB flash drive. This version of Knoppix seems to include gcc, but NOT g++. The course curriculum requires compiling C++ programs. I know I can run: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install build-essential to install (among other things) g++, but of course this only makes sense on a system installed to a hard drive. So my question is, can I write a script that calls gcc with appropriate options and flags to compile a C++ program that students could use in place of g++?

  • laptop overheating ran defraggler and now its not as hot

    Trying to diagnose and fix an overheating Acer 5735 laptop, running speedfan and doing general workload to try and cause the overheat conditions. I notice that windows xp is badly fragmented according to defraggler, at 58% fragmentation. So I defrag whilst watching the speedfan window, which was at the start reporting high warning style symbols for all of the sensors. After the defrag, I rebooted and ran a few programs, and even defraggler again and the sensors in speedfan all reported green i.e. not high. Wondering if there is a correlation between windows fragmentation causing the hard drive to work harder and produce more heat inside the laptop? dont want to just assume that the problems are resolved, so either speedfan is not accurate enough or fragmentation can lead to additional hard drive heat? All comments or suggestions welcome.

    I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). My setup is as follows: Intel core i5 750 quad core 2.66mhz 4GB ram asus p55 motherboard radeon hd 5570 video card 650gb 7200rpm western digital sata HDD 23" Nec ea23wmi monitor Operating System: Windows 7 What might be the main bottleneck that needs upgrading to fix my delays? Seems like the hard drive might be the problem but anything faster than 7200rpm is beyond my budget for a decent hard drive. Could it be anything else?

  • Switching to open folders on a Mac

    How do I easily switch to an open folder on a Mac? In Windows, which I'm used to using, I can see all my opened folders in my vertical taskbar, all I need to do to switch to another window is click on the folder in the task bar. There's no taskbar on a Mac, and when I have a lot of folders opened, ie. lots of Finder windows, how can I switch between them? The way I'm doing it is, I put expose on an active corner and switch that way. However that's still damn hard, because first I have to bring up expose, and then find my window. The folders are placed in a random position between opened apps, the folders are not in a list, and on a big screen I have to scan the whole screen in order to find the one I want... etc. Is it really this hard just to switch to a different folder on a Mac? Is there a taskbar solution on a Mac?

  • Is there a maximum of open files per process in Linux?

    My question is pretty simple and is actually stated in the title. One of my applications throws errors regarding "too many open files" at me, even tho the limit for the user the application runs with is higher than the default of 1024 (lsof -u $USER reports 3000 open fds). Because I cannot imagine why this happens, I guess there might be a maximum per process. Any idea is very appreciated!   • How safe is locking the screen?

    So, both windows and linux have a pretty useful feature that allows you to leave everything running on the PC while also keeping invaders away by locking the screen. My question is: Say I leave my laptop with the screen locked while I go get a donnut, and then it gets stolen. Assuming the thief has access to whatever software he needs, how easy/hard would it be for him to access my (currently logged-in) account? Now let me be clear. I'm not asking if he can access the data on the harddrive. I know he can, and that issue would go under data encryption, which is not my question here. I'm focusing on how hard would it be to get around the "Insert Password" screen, and have full access to my account. I'm looking for answers regarding both OS's; but, if needed, assume Ubuntu.   • Using search and replace to remove line breaks in Open Office

    Hi, I've imported a document into Open Office and it has a number of hard returns in wrong places. In MS Word, I could use the search and replace to simply get rid of them all easily, but Open Office's earch won't find them. I tried /n with the 'use regular expressions' box checked, but it seems that only looks for 'shift-enter' breaks and not ordinary hard returns. Is there another way to remove them all quickly, or do I have to go manually through the document and remove each one individually. This is a surprising oversight for Open Office.

  • Windows unrecoverable error wouldn't come out of Hibernate

    Out of curiosity... I was in a rush: I put my laptop into Hibernate (I don't keep a battery in it btw) Leaned it against a box in the laundry room Smooth tile floor means bottom of laptop slide out and laptop feel flat against floor, not super hard, but it wasn't carpeting so.. Next time I booted my laptop, I received this error for the first time ever: (not an exact quote) Windows experienced an unrecoverable error and cannot come out of Hibernate. Windows is restarting now After that, my laptop seemed to operate flawlessly. What do you think happened? Jared the electronics? I'm guessing an error like this would result of some sort of hard drive trauma, but fortunately, I have discovered none so far. I scheduled Error-checking for next restart.

  • Motherboard/PSU crippling USB and Sata

    I very recently bought a new desktop computer. The motherboard is: Z77MX-D3H and the power supply is ocz zs series 550w. The issue I have is that once I boot to the operating system (I have tried with fedora and Ubuntu with kernels 2.6.38 - 3.4.0), my hard drive (2.5" Magnetic) occasionally makes a power switch noise and it resets. Needless to say, when this drive is the OS drive, the OS crashes. I also have a SSD that works fine with the same OS configurations, but if I have the magnetic hard drive attached as second drive, it works erratically and the reconnects result in corrupted data. Also the issue of the usb reconnects is less frequent if the hard drive is plugged before I switch on the computer. Does anybody have some advice as to what I could do? Which is the faulty part/s that I should replace? As for me, I really don't know if to point my finger to the PSU or the Motherboard (I have updated to the latest firmware and checked the BIOS settings several times). EDIT: The reconnects are happening both in the Sata connected drives and the USBX connected drives.

  • Dual-bootable Virtual Machine

    My work computer is a Linux desktop with a Windows 7 virtual machine for Visual Studio and IE testing. I'm very picky, and I don't want to configure two Windows installs... but I can't think of a way to do this without running afoul of Windows activation. I've already set up VirtualBox to run my VM off a physical hard drive, and grub isn't too hard to configure. But it'd be a waste of time without solving the activation problem. Is there any way I can boot into a single install of Windows as a virtual machine and on actual hardware without having to reactivate (until I'm eventually flagged as a pirate) every time I switch between the two? Is there any MS-endorsed way to use a single installed license with two sets of hardware?

    On my laptop (el-cheapo but pretty good) I have all my 3 USB ports occupied by devices in use (external mouse, external keyboard, 3G internet/flash drive/external hard drive/etc). I want a cooling pad for my hard-worked laptop but all seem to be powered by USB... This laptop is mainly stationary. Either is available a solution to power the USB-powered cooling pad other than connecting it to the laptop... ... either is there a non-USB powered laptop cooling pad?

  • Hardware upgrade: Windows 7 bluescreens, Vista loads

    I just did a fairly significant hardware upgrade while keeping my hard disks. The old system was a dell Optiplex 745 with an Intel Core 2 duo, LGA 775. The new system is custom built, Intel i5 750. I know you're supposed to do a clean install with a hardware upgrade like this, but I'd had success in the past doing the stealth hardware upgrade like this, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit gets through the loading screen and immediately blue screens and reboots. Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, which I have on an old hard drive from an AMD box (!!) loads up fine. I ran through the windows memory checker just to be sure, and my memory is fine. So, is the BSOD the result of some sort of protection mechanism specific to Windows 7? Is there any hope of salvaging that install?

    Just bought a new HP pavilion desktop with Windows 8. I wish to totally remove Windows 8 and all data on the hard drive, remove any windows partitions, delete all data, and then install a fresh Linux. Problem is I can seem to get to boot from USB or boot from CD. It appears that Windows 8 added the following two "features": UEFI which substitutes what we have known as the BIOS Secure Boot which prevents anything but the installed operating system How do I completely and totally erase all traces of Windows 8? Is it still possible to reformat the hard drive? I don't want a duel boot, I don't want to go back to Windows 7, I just want anything Windows gone.

  • Which hardware changes require operating system reinstallation?

    I'm about to upgrade my computer but might keep some parts. Just wandering what I would have to keep to prevent me having to reinstall my OSs, at the moment I have a dual boot setup with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm pretty sure you can't just take your hard drive with the OS on it and put it into a different box and keep going (can you?) but I know you can change the graphics cards, secondary hard drives and ram with out a problem. So what is it that you can't change? The CPU? Motherboard? Thanks for any replies

  • Any "Magic Tricks" For Getting Data Back After Windows 7 Install

    My old man installed Windows 7 without making a proper backup, and now realizes he left behind some important data. He did a true "clean install", so there is no Windows.old folder in the root directory. However, I believe the format performed on the hard drive was only a quick format, so I am hoping there is some chance at data recovery. I took his hard drive out, and have spent a majority of the weekend researching data recovery options. I paid $70 for the GetDataBack software, but have had little success with it. I can see all of the files I want to restore, however they appear corrupt when I try to open them. With that all being said, does anyone know of a viable way to recover some of this data, or is it a lost cause all together?
