  • Disk operations in windows 7 are slow

    My computer started lagging last Sunday. I tried to reboot it and it failed. Trying to boot into failsafe mode takes around two hours. It mainly freezes on two files: scsiport.sys and classpnp.sys When it finally has started all disc operations are really slow. When it has run for a while it goes faster, probably due to data moved into RAM instead. It froze on an other file before that was associated with Avast but uninstalling it didn't really help. A critical windows update was installed on Sunday but rolling back the update didn't help. I had a guess about the sound card but disabling the sound card drivers also didn’t help. I have an inkling of an idea that it might be Intel rapid storage technology that might be acting up but it doesn't allow me to reinstall it from failsafe mode and I haven't been able to log into normal mode for a while. I would appreciate suggestions regarding how to get into normal mode again and/or what can be the root cause.

  • WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

    My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice.   • Is my external hard drive dying?

    I keep getting this error lately when I try to copy large (200+ MB) files over to my external. Following this, the disk becomes unresponsive and I got to unplug it and plug it in again to work. The copy process also is unreasonably slow. It is worth noting that this happens on Windows too, so it's not the notorious "Error -36" bug OS X had prior to 10.6.3. The disk is a Western Digital 3200BMV. Any ideas?

  • Software for RAID Failure Alerts?

    I have two 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD disks in a RAID 1 array. I would like to receive a notification if one of the disks in the array fails. Can anybody recommend an application I can install on the server to fire an email if such an event occurs? Here are some additional specs: Supermicro X9SCM-IIF motherboard utilising the hardware RAID controller. OS = Windows 2012 Standard Also is it possible to simulate a disk failure by pulling it out of the bay? SSDs appear to fail close together when in a mirrored config so I'd like to know ASAP if one goes down so I can swap them out with minimum delay. UPDATE 26th June 2013 ------------------------ None of the software that ships with the Supermicro X9SCM-* motherboards offer support for RAID monitoring. As has been pointed out here, these boards are built on an Intel chipset for RAID and so I installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology that supports automated email notifications on RAID failure http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-020784.htm One small issue, the software only allows you to send email notifications without SMTP authentication.   • Problem deleting files in Windows 7

    Happens sometimes but frequently enough to be a pain in the bum. I press Del or Shift + Del but the file stays there. Then when I try to delete it again, it says that I need permission from the Admin. For it to be deleted, usually I have to restart my computer List of things I've tried: I have admin privileges Hasn't happened since I reinstalled Windows and another form of this happened in my install before the last one I tried takeown in cmd but it says ERROR: Access is denied The files sometimes disappear by themselves after 2 mins or so Refreshing the folder doesn't do anything Unlocker doesn't work either.   • Can I install windows on an SSD and access data from my old windows HDD?

    I purchased new computer components, switching my hardware from AMD and Radeon to Intel and Nvidia. I kept components from my old computer like the powersupply and two HDDs. Everything appeared to install correctly and the system booted into the BIOS just fine (after a brief snafu with the CPU fan). My goal was to use the two harddrives and just be able to turn on the computer and load up my old windows install with all the files, programs, and documents. I expected to have to call Microsoft to re-register the windows install for the new hardware (since I had to do that last time I upgraded w/ the same windows version). When the computer attempts to boot into windows it briefly flashes a bluescreen and then restarts. System recovery gives a message something like "BadDriver Failover" something something. I assume this is because it's trying to use amd drivers for an intel chipset (or something...?) and I've been as-yet unsuccessful in getting it to boot into my old windows partition. SO! I decided eff it, maybe I'll go visit my nearest Micro Center and buy a 200 GB SSD, install windows onto that, and then... be able to access just the contents of both of my other harddrives? I don't intend on running any of the programs but there were some saved files I would like to salvage from the 500 GB harddrive, The 1.5 TB harddrive only had files on it, no OS or applications so I'd also expect to still be able to access it. Is this possible? Can I install the SSD and only format/install windows onto it and still access the contents from my two transferred-over drives?

  • Hard Reset USB in Ubuntu 10.04

    I have a USB device (a modem) that is really finicky. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it refuses to connect. The only solution I have found to fix it once it gets into a bad state is to physically unplug the device and plug it back in. However, I don't always have physical access to the machine it is plugged in on, so I'm looking for a way to do this through the command line. This post suggests running: $ sudo modprobe -w -r usb_storage; sudo modprobe usb_storage However I get an "unknown option -w" output. This slightly modified command: $ sudo modprobe -r usb_storage Fails with the message FATAL: Module usb_storage is in use. If I try to kill -9 the processes marked [usb-storage] before running they refuse to die (I think because they are deeply tied to the kernel). Anyone know of a way to do this? NOTE: I cross-posted this on serverfault as I didn't know which was more appropriate. I will delete and/or link whichever one is answered first.

    Our SVN server hd was full. Deleted a load of unwanted data on there, and all appeared to be well. However, new check-ins are now failing. Can't move '/repos/db/txn-protorevs/1000-vr.rev' to '/repos/db/revs/1/1001': Permission denied 1000-vr.rev does not exist. There are two other files in there: 9-9.rev and 9-9.rev-lock Edit: I have checked file permissions just in case, and all is as it should be.

    What is the reason partitioning is usually a step in installing multiple (2) operating systems on the same computer? Does an operating system have to have it's own partition to run or can it run in the same partition as another operating system? (i.e. -can two of the same flavor run in the same partition but if you have one Linux and one windows it needs to be partitioned?) Is it necessary to make disk partitions to run multiple operating systems?

  • Windows update on netbook requires CD (hint, there's no CD drive)

    An "Important" update for Microsoft Works (via Windows Update) on a Dell netbook gets about halfway through and then pops up with the super-awesome "Please insert Microsoft Works 9.0 disc" message. Of course, the netbook has no CD rom drive, there is no handy folder (that i can find) containing "Works9.msi", and I have no Works9 disc. It wouldn't be so bad, except the update keeps coming up everytime WU runs. Any suggestions?

  • Why does my HDD produce a high-pitched noise when the CPU is in use?

    I know this is strange. Some time ago, I bought a new 7200rpm HDD for my desktop system (I'll look for the model later). Every time the CPU is used, a high frequency cheep comes from the HDD. I'm sure it's the HDD because the problem does not occur if the HDD is not attached or is in energy-saving mode (I cross-checked by booting from a live CD). What could be the reason for the cheep sounds? Could it be the power supply?

Since my drives are 3TB, fdisk and cfdisk won't cut it due to their 2GB limit, but they are straight forward when managing partitions - adding da or fd as types. But, there is not that straight forward guide for RAID partition setup with parted. So, how do I make Non-FS or RAID partition with parted?

  • HDD dead forever???

    Yesterday I turned on my computer and it couldn't boot. I found out the hd (320GB SATA Seagate Momentus 7200.3 for notebook) was broken, it couldn't be recognized by the BIOS. I have another of the same hd, so I exchanged the boards. I found out that there is a problem on its board since my good hd didn't work. But the broken hd doesn't work with the good board as well: it can be recognized but when I insert a Windows Instalation DVD it says the hd is 0GB. I put it in a case and use it in another computer via USB, and but it doesn't show up in the "My Computer". I used a software to recover files called "GetDataBack for NTFS", it recognized the hd but with the wrong size (2TB). I try to make it read the hd but it get an I/O error reading sector. It tries to read, the hd spins... So, since I'm using a good board on it, the problem seems to be internal. Is there anything someone could do recover the files from it?

    I am looking for a solution for copying all the files from a specific directory on the hard drive, to a specific directory on a USB memory device, once this device is connected. I have a program that downloads podcast episodes for me. I would like these files to be automatically moved (or at least copied) to my mp3 player once I connect it to the computer. I have both windows xp and linux machines, so a solution for any of them will work for me.

    I have a Seagate expansion 2TB HDD which I've managed to get working on my wireless router (thanks to fat32format) however I haven't managed to set my backup to work with it. Vist Home Premium requires that I input a username and password in the backup utility. As far as I'm aware that type of access control isn't set on the HDD: Can I set up the access control on the HDD? If so how Or, can I set the backup to work without it?   • How to make RHEL have persistent local hdd name?

    I have 2 identical Dell R720 servers running identical Oracle Enterprise Linux(RHEL)6.4. Both servers (supposedly) configured in exactly the same way. However, one of the servers is behaving differently. Every other reboot its local HDD name(and related partitions) flip from /dev/sda to /dev/sdj. This is problematic because both servers are configured for multipathd, and if this flip happens their config does not match and Oracle DB(or its clusterware) complains that nodes are not configured identically. Why does one server has a consistent device names while the other server keeps flipping back and forth? How can I make local hdd to consistently be /dev/sda? I suspect this might have something to do with udev but I'm not sure.

  • Extensive use of HDD after VmWare Player virtual machine is closed.

    Each time I close virtual machine in VmWare Player I see extensive use of HDD in my system. Basically, whole system becomes unresponsive for about 5-7 minutes. Host system is Windows 7 Utimate x64 SP1 with 6 GB of memory, i3-M350 processor. Virtual machine is Windows XP SP3 x86 (2GB of memory allocated for VM). What can be the cause and what can I do to solve the issue? UPDATE: I am not shutting down the VM, I just close Player window and VM saves it's state. System becomes unresponsive right after VM have saved it state (as indicated by Player) and Player itself have closed.

    I've got a computer running under the OS "Window Server 2008 R2" on which i have : 60GB disk C: NTFS (Disk 0) 40GB unallocated memory (Disk 1) I would like to partition my disk so that i'll have : 30GB disk C: 70GB disk D: Can you help me on the step i should do to be abble to have this configuration ? I saw that first of all i should merge the two volumes into one, but when i click right on the c: Volume, i can't click on the "Extend Volume" link. Do you know how i can overcome this ?
