• Auditing bandwidth of remote sites

  I would like to do an automatic audit of bandwidth of my remote offices. I understand that there are many websites where I could ask each user to go to a webpage and run the test. I was hoping there was some software that I could run on our web server and a script that I could send out that would run the test and record the results to a central web interface. The remote sites are all running some form of Windows and the server environment can be Linux or Windows based.

• Mitigating the 'firesheep' attack at the network layer?

  What are the sysadmin's thoughts on mitigating the 'firesheep' attack for servers they manage? Firesheep is a new firefox extension that allows anyone who installs it to sidejack session it can discover. It does it's discovery by sniffing packets on the network and looking for session cookies from known sites. It is relatively easy to write plugins for the extension to listen for cookies from additional sites. From a systems/network perspective, we've discussed the possibility of encrypting the whole site, but this introduces additional load on servers and screws with site-indexing, assets and general performance. One option we've investigated is to use our firewalls to do SSL Offload, but as I mentioned earlier, this would require all of the site to be encrypted. What's the general thoughts on protecting against this attack vector? I've asked a similar question on StackOverflow, however, it would be interesting to see what the systems engineers thought.

  I have granted new setting from my domain provider. Domain with specific port is pointing on computer in local network (fixed ip) like: mydomain.com:87 -> 192.168.1.1 Local machine is running on win server 2008. Everything works fine on local network. But mydomain.com:87 is not working. Are there extra settings for win server to allow connection from outside? (Firewall is turned off while searching for working result.)

• VOIP and internet connection speeds [cable vs. fiber]

  Our office is migrating to IP telephony. We have less than 10 employees that will be using the phones. We currently have cable internet, and they just bumped the speeds: There is a data center that was just recently built in our building, and we were considering co-lo'ing there in the near future. As a result, they offered us access to their triple-redundant internet, but it's quite expensive. They are offering 3mbps committed with up to 10mbps burst for $250/month (discounted). We pay ~$120 for our cable (which the plan was to keep--at least for TV). I want the phone system and LAN to be as separate as possible. Was thinking about keeping the cable for LAN, and using the other connection for the phones (until I saw the price). Now I'm thinking it might make sense to add on to our existing cable setup, and change our phone to only have DSL as a backup for the cable. Is there any real benefit to the fiber? Especially for the price? Any other suggestions or ideas? Thanks.

• Accessing localhost:8080 through local network

  I'm developing a Python WSGI website. I'm running a Paste development server on my Mac (OS X 10.7) on port 8080. I want to test the website on some other devices and OSs I have connected to the local network (Windows 7 VM, iPad, iPhone, etc.), but am having trouble. I turned on Web Sharing, and am able to access that (port 80) without a problem on all my devices. Port 8080 still doesn't work. An excerpt from my Paste configuration: [server:main] use = egg:waitress#main host = 127.0.0.1 port = 8080 The OS X firewall (Settings - Security - Firewall) is off. I have no other firewall software installed. My network is through a Linksys WRT160N router. I haven't done much with the settings, so most of them are at their defaults. I've been Googling all morning, but can't find a solution.

  my computer can catch the signal for many Access Points for the same network, while the network has problem with internet connection in some APs and it's working in others "all APs have the same SSID" Please advice if as i user i can force my computer to connect with specific AP neither than to go with the one with higher power (through MAC adress or IP)?. • Windows 7 to search a network drive

  Is there any way that I can have windows 7 clients be able to go to "start" and type in the name of a file that is located on a network drive? I have read that this is possible through indexing, but to get through the indexing steps I need to make files available offline. This network drive I speak of has about 2tb of files on it. How in the heck can I keep all this straight. I imagine there would be syncing errors everywhere if I were to make all of these files available offline. Not to mention not all files being current due to the large amounts of files. Anyone have suggestions?

• connecting to a network using route command

  I have a computer with an external IP(192.168.223.220) and also an internal address (10.1.1.20) in order to connect to some servers that don't have external addresses only 10.1.1.xx . in order to connect to these servers from other machines I used the following command "route ADD 10.1.1.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.223.220" and than I was able to connect to the servers using there 10.1.1.xx address. The problem is that the hard disk of main server(192.168.223.220) died and was replaced and after the that I am not able to connect to the servers as before, the route command succeeds and I can ping 10.1.1.20 but not the other servers.   I have a home network, and I'm trying to share a printer connected to one of the PCs. The wireless modem through which the internet comes through doesn't reach the entire house, so we have another router set up as well. The modem is 192.168.1.1 (let's call this A) and the router is set up as 192.168.1.100 (let's call this B). Subnet masks 255.255.255.0. The printer is hooked up to a PC on B. If my laptop is connected wirelessly to B, it can see the printer. However, if it's connected to A, it doesn't show up in My Network Places. • Windows 7 to search a network drive

  We just upgraded our company intranet from an IIS based, ASP (poorly written) server/code base to a Windows Server 2008 r2 (Apache/MySQL/PHP) server. The old server allowed users to login to intranet.xxx.org using there AD user/pass which then lead them to the company Intranet from basically anywhere they had Internet access. We want to mimic that functionality (or change it to something more secure) with the new setup. This was seemingly setup for off-site employees running on a state network. The state network does not allow VPN, therefor, we needed a way to allow those employees access to the Intranet. So, how do we go about allowing users to login from the outside world and gain access to our Intranet?

  Which of the two methods of dta transfer trasfers data at a faster rate for smartphones and tablets? Standard WIFI, or MicroSD Cards? I wonder if it would be actually faster to access data on external storage then it would be to have the MicroSD card in my smartphone or tablet. Currently I have a class 10 32GB MicroSD card in my cell phone. I am looking to get the new Google Nexus tablet but it does not offer expandable internal storage. I wonder if that's really a detriment; because if WIFI is faster than MicroSD, then it would matter almost none at all that you couldn't expand the storage internally. If the case is that WIFI is faster, and people caught onto this, then people could save a lot of money on lower memory ipads/iphones/ipods, tablets, and smartphones!

  I don't know about you folks, but I hate the idea of junk sitting on my tiny 30GB SSD. Any way to designate another drive to be the host of the Recycle Bin for items formerly on the SSD? Basically, I need to know how to make a lower-priority drive receive the recycled materials from the 'main' drive, which happens to be short on space. The best thing I can think of is a batch file that a) syncs 'recycle' to another drive; and b) empties the recycle bin. ... but that's too much work for me.

  OK, this might be a really stupid question, but... I'm building a web app that utilises websockets. There's fairly rapid messaging going on, so I've been taking a look at the network traffic with wireshark, to see if there's any way of reducing the amount of data we are sending over the wire, and hence costs. A typical message has approx 150 byte data payload, and according to wireshark the lower layer stuff takes up about: Ethernet: 14 bytes IP: 20 Bytes TCP: 20 Bytes My question is, are these network headers included in data transfer calculations? What about TCP ACK messages? (another 54 bytes according to wireshark) This may seem petty, but because we have so much messaging going on, and because the payload is a similar size to these headers, it's significant.

• Windows 8.1 keeps prompting for Network Share Credentials after every log on or restart

  I have a Network drive Shared in a Workgroup with 3 clients. Two clients with Windows 7 have persistent connections to the Share. No issues with those two. My windows 8.1 client keeps prompting for credentials at every restart / log on. I spent hours looking around for a solution: I have stored cred in cred manager, and tried every possible combination (WORKGROUP\user , COMPUTERNAME\user, user, .. and so on). I have changed NT and NTLM negotiation in policy manager. I've compared the settings under GPO network security with a working win 7 computer, everything is pretty much the same. -I've captured Wireshark to see SMB negotiation process, honestly I see the messages flowing around, and the share sending AUTH DENIED.. which means is how the 8.1 client formats the request.... that makes the share reject it.. Now I still don't really know why. Any ideas would be appreciated.

  Let's get straight to the point. This is my fictive network architecture: My question is: Would it be possible for Laptop B to intercept traffic sent and received by Laptop A? Please note that B only has WiFi access and no physical control over Router B. Furthermore, Router A and B create different wireless networks with different encryption keys. • two shops network

  okay so, I just opened up two shops in my hometown. The two stores is about 6 blocks apart, connecting them by wire is not really feasible in cost wise. What kind of network topology should I use for my small shops, there will be 5 computers, one is the sales computer ,another 4 as mentioned is the guest computer. I want the sales and guest computers network to be seperated. Both shops have same computers. The guest computers serves up simple website that has my shop catalog on it, I'm thinking of using a web server. So, how am i suppose to setup these networks, im planning to add in more computers in the future. • Sharing a Win7 Mappable Network Drive in Server 2008 R2

  I have a ghetto windows server 2008 r2 server that I basically run as a file server. I would like to create a share that can be mapped as a network drive by a Windows 7 Pro PC. How can I do this? I've gathered that I probably need to setup a VPN network on my Server 2008 R2 box and then grant my Win7 PC access. Is there anything else I am overlooking or is there a better way to do this? I basically just want to be able to edit xml files on my Win7 PC without having to ftp them back and forth.

• VPC on Windows 7 very slow network

  I have a Windows 2003 virtual machine which I use for website testing. I've just installed Windows 7 and am using the new version VPC (not xp mode). When I try to copy a file - I need to copy some big databases across - I get a file copy speed of about 20k per sec. Copying from one PC to another on the real network transfers files at 13mb per second. Any ideas what may be causing this? I've turned off differential network compression on win 7. The Virtual HD is on a seperate physical drive to the OS. Running Windows 7 64 bit on a dual xeon with 16gb ram and 10,000 rpm drives. Tried installing VPC 2007 but windows blocks it running saying its not compatable. Many thanks for any ideas.
