He joined the company in July 2011 as a Sales Representative for the Financial sector and had previously worked for another American IT company. He was promoted to a Management position in 2013. “I have been in this Industry for 15 years and I am now Technology Sales Manager, covering Database, BI and Fusion Middleware products. What I’ve learned in my role is that respect is one of the most important values a good professional should have. By respecting and embracing everyone’s opinions, we create a very good work environment that encourages innovation and change. It eventually leads to a stronger team where people listen to each other and value each other’s opinion. On the other hand, It is mandatory to have good knowledge about the area you work in and to continously seek to improve your expertise.   • Oracle 9i Session Disconnections

    I am in a development environment, and our test Oracle 9i server has been misbehaving for a few days now. What happens is that we have our JDBC connections disconnecting after a few successful connections. We got this box set up by our IT department and handed over to. It is 'our problem', so options like 'ask you DBA' isn't going to help me. :( Our server is set up with 3 plain databases (one is the main dev db, the other is the 'experimental' dev db). We use the Oracle 10 ojdbc14.jar thin JDBC driver (because of some bug in the version 9 of the driver). We're using Hibernate to talk to the DB. The only thing that I can see that changed is that we now have more users connecting to the server. Instead of one developer, we now have 3. With the Hibernate connection pools, I'm thinking that maybe we're hitting some limit? Anyone has any idea what's going on? One ISP was criticized for it's low security conditions, and when i heard this i started to think: If one gets an unauthorized access to the mainframe computer / internal network of the ISP, then wouldn't he be able to sniff all the traffic ? Because the ISP is providing the internet connection for the user so all traffic that sends and transmits a user travels via the ISP, right ? What security solutions (talking about computer security) are being implemented by other ISP in order to protect themselves and their users ? If all the connections are being sent via a special computer, how secure it is and how can be we sure that it's really safe ? And what kind of computers are those who serve as backbones for the ISP ?     The user has RX privs. This event consistently arises in the security logs. How can this be resolved? Or what is the underlying issue here?   • AWS EC2 security group source

    I'm currently trying to configure a security group and allow MS SQL connections from my other instance. I want to be able to specify the security group's name as the source. But the connection is not going through. The instance's firewall has a rule to allow connections on the port. In fact, if I specify the IP of the machine as the source, it works. Just not the security group name. There are two other rules for the same port and they're for specific IPs only. What am I doing wrong?

  • Mac OS X: network disabled because security breach

    Dear all, I just recieved a message on my Mac OS X system telling me (loosely translated from Dutch): "The network has been temporarily disabled because the network's security was breached." (It's a wireless WPA2-PSK secured network BTW) I looked in the logs of my router (a Zyxel P-2602HW-D1A) only to see a few (outbound) "syn flood TCP ATTACK" logs, but those were from like a week ago, other than that nothing. What tools on Mac OS X do I have to analyse this security breach occurence? Are there some security logs on Mac OS X that I can inspect? What other measurements should I take? And how serious should I take this warning from Mac OS X? System: Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz OS: Mac OS X 10.5.8 Network: wireless WPA2-PSK Relevant software: Parallels Desktop with Windows XP (was open, but stopped at the time) Other systems on my network: Windows XP SP3 desktop (was running at the time) If you need any more info, don't hestitate to ask.   • "Access Denied" error when starting Windows Security Center service

    I am working on a laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit) which had previous issues with Microsoft Security Essentials. I've removed the previous installation of Security Essentials and reinstalled it. There's no problem with the said antivirus now, but after a couple of days it was brought back to me because of the error about Windows Security Center service not being started. I've tried setting it to start Automatically instead of "Delayed Start", but I still keep getting "Error 5: Access is Denied." I've searched other possible solutions but it's mostly been either what I did already or "Don't worry about it." Any ideas? Thanks in advance! EDIT: I've scanned the system with both Malwarebytes AM and SUPERAntiSpyware and have found no traces of anything. EDIT2: I have also tried running sfc /scannow to see if the files might be damaged. Got the message no integrity violations were found, however.

    Hello, I wanted to ask if let's say that Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows Server 2003 now so there is no any security updates and I use that system for Domain Controller (Windows XP/7 Professional Clients) and File Server only + I'm using ESET NOD23 AntiVirus. Will my system be secure? I'm asking because I don't surf internet on that system nor I will install/open any programs/documents and that server is connected to router without any open ports. "On July 14, 2015, all Windows 2003 support, including security updates and security-related hotfixes, will be terminated."

  • Mirror for Oracle DB 10g or 11g download

    I was trying to download Oracle Database (10g and 11g). On webpage of oracle there are links, however they give me 404 when I accept OTN license and try to download. I googled around and found forum with users reporting the same issue and the workaround was to change the url of download link from download.oracle.com/... to download download-uk.oracle.com/... however this does not work either, is there any mirror that is working at the moment?

Unfortunately we don't have previous database schema file for production database. Is there a way to export existing database schema as *.dbschema file, preferably from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (2008 R2)? This way we could run schema comparison and generate update script.

    What is the Sydney to Gong Ride? The Gong Ride is a one of a kind fundraising event. You can pedal 90 km from Sydney to Wollongong on any day of the year but it's only on the first Sunday of November that you'll experience the camaraderie, fellowship, unity, safey, scenery and sense of achievement for pedalling in support of people living with MS. Well done to the 22 members of the Oracle Sydney to Gong ride on Sunday 6 November. For many, this was the first time riding over distance – officially a 90km event, by GPS about 84km. The event started in Sydney Park, Newtown. We left in a few separate groups between 6.30 and 7.30am – and finished with times between 2 hours 45 mins and 6 hours. With 10,000 riders there was a lot of congestion at the start but that soon thinned out as we left Sydney. It was a great spring day for the event but at 34 degrees it was getting pretty warm once we left the shade of the Royal National Park and carried on over the Sea Cliff bridge and down the coast road towards Wollongong. Unfortunately Dan managed to get himself a facial scrub when someone clipped his front wheel on the descent from Bald Hill lookout. No major incidents thankfully and Dan soldiered on. Most importantly everyone had a good time (even Dan) and we raised $5,800 for Multiple Sclerosis Australia. In total more than $3.7m was raised for this good cause.

  • Using XML as data storage

    I was thinking about the XML format and the following quote: “XML is not a database. It was never meant to be a database. It is never going to be a database. Relational databases are proven technology with more than 20 years of implementation experience. They are solid, stable, useful products. They are not going away. XML is a very useful technology for moving data between different databases or between databases and other programs. However, it is not itself a database. Don't use it like one.“ -Effective XML: 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your XML by Elliotte Rusty Harold (page 230, Part 4, Item 41, 2nd paragraph) This seems to really stress that XML should not be used for data storage and should only be used for program to program interoperability. Personally, I disagree and .NET's app.config file that's used to store a program's settings is an example of data storage in an XML file. However for databases rather than configurations etc XML should not be used. To develop my point, I will use two examples: A) Data about customers with fields that are all on one level i.e. there are a number of fields all relating to one customer with no children B) Data about configuration of an application where nested fields and properties make a lot of sense So my question is, Is this still a valid statement and is it now acceptable to store data using XML? EDIT: I've sent an email to the author of that quote to ask for his input/extra context.

  • Optimising Database Mirroring over WAN

      I recently got asked by our network guys about botlenecks in the WAN that used for mirroring to our DR I site. They asked me to turn off encryption of Database Mirroring so that the riverbed software  they were using could optimise the packets sent over the WAN. I was a bit sceptical at first about the security risks, but it seems the riverbed software has its own form of obfuscation making the packets difficult to read. After reading an article by rusanu I realised that it could be done with minimal downtime and potential reducing network traffic by 5-10% on its own.   • Process Oracle OER Events using a simple Web Service

    This post provides an example of a simple web service that processes Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) Events. The service receives events from OER and utilizes the OER REX API to implement simple OER automations for selected event types. The web service example implements the following: When a new Asset is Submitted to OER: The Asset is automatically Accepted by a defined user. When an Asset is Accepted: The Asset is automatically assigned  to a defined user for review. If the accepted asset is of type Service The Version meta data attribute is set based on the version id contained in the suffix of the Service Namespace.      When an Asset is Registered: If the registered Asset is of type Service The related Assets ( Interface and Endpoint are also automatically registered. The sample web service is not intended to replace the out of the Box OER BPM Based workflows, but the service can be utilized in cases where only simple automation is required and the developer has a Java skill set.     Das Netzwerk bietet eine extrem kritische Angriffsfläche in jeder Sicherheitsarchitektur. Einerseits ist kaum zu verhindern, dass externe oder auch interne Angreifer auf das Netzwerk zugreifen: So sieht etwa jemand, der Zugriff auf einen sogenannten Netzwerksniffer hat (zum Beispiel auf das weit verbreitete Wireshark) alle Daten, die im Netzwerk übertragen werden. Andererseits gehen alle Befehle, die an eine Oracle Datenbank geschickt werden - mit Ausnahme der Informationen zu Benutzernamen und Passwort beim LOGIN - sowie alle Daten, die aus einer Datenbank ausgegeben werden, im Klartext über das Netzwerk. Das Risiko,  über das Netzwerk Daten 'zu verlieren', ist daher nur in den Griff zu bekommen, wenn man den Datenstrom verschlüsselt. Die einfachste Lösung zur Verschlüsselung des Datenstroms bietet ASO mit der sogenannten nativen Verschlüsselung über SQL*Net. Sie ist bei Bedarf und ohne Neustart der Datenbank ganz einfach und im Extremfall mit einer einzigen Einstellung in der Konfigurationsdatei SQLNET.ORA zu implementieren, nämlich mitSQLNET.ENCRYPTION_SERVER = REQUIREDWegen der einfachen Umsetzung wird diese Variante von der ganz überwiegenden Mehrheit der ASO Anwender bevorzugt eingesetzt. Im Rahmen der Datenbank Community wurde das Verfahren auch schon näher betrachtet. Allerdings lässt sich mit der ASO auch die Verschlüsselung des Netzwerks über SSL implementieren. Wie das aufzusetzen ist beschreibt dieser Tipp. Er versteht sich als erstes How-To zur Einarbeitung in die Thematik.
