  • Mac OS X Terminal.app Ubuntu 9.10 SSHD and incorrect keyboard mapping

    Does anyone have any Idea how to handle this? I can't stand connecting to certain Ubuntu boxes via Mac OS X because of issues with keyboard layout etc. I have set TERM=vt100 and TERM=xterm-color in Ubuntu .bashrc and also in the Terminal.app advanced preferences and nothing seems to fix this issue. Trying to use arrow keys on slim silver keyboard results in ^[[A etc. From Answer OS X 10.6.4 When I try to run /lib/terminfo/x/xterm-color I get permission denied? Maybe this is the issue?! Regular bash login shell. If I sudo often it works. Which leads me to believe the above permissions problem is the cause.   • Zsh super slow inside my Git repo

    My Zsh is super slow inside a certain Git repo of mine. When I Google "zsh git slow", I get a bunch of results about Git autocompletion being slow, but autocompletion isn't necessarily my problem; it's everything. I tried removing all plugins and that, strangely, didn't do anything at all when I opened a new shell. Zsh would still do Git stuff inside my Git repo. I found this snippet on this page: function git_prompt_info() { ref=$(git symbolic-ref HEAD 2> /dev/null) || return echo "$ZSH_THEME_GIT_PROMPT_PREFIX${ref#refs/heads/}$ZSH_THEME_GIT_PROMPT_SUFFIX" } That made everything fast again, but it also gave me a prompt that looks like this: ? snip git:(master Note the missing right parenthesis. That's kind of lame. Plus the whole thing just seems like a hack I shouldn't have to do. There's also this promising-looking SU question, but the links on the accepted answer are dead. How can I get my Zsh not to be slow inside a Git repo?

    I recently did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my Mac Mini Server.   • How are thumbnails stored on Mac OS X?

    I have noticed that thumbnails on Mac OS X don't seem to be generated every time I open a folder, but to be somehow "cached" instead. I wasn't able, however, to find a folder where they clearly look to be stored. I thought then they could be saved as some kind of metadata; i found, however, that when deleting a file (e.g. from the Desktop) and saving immediately after a file by the same name, the preview for the previous file is showed for ~ a second. Are they stored separately from data? How and when are they invalidated (e.g. only when a file by the same name appears in the same directory)?

  • Mac OS X app window is too large - how can I resize?

    I'm a MacBook user, and when I'm home I plug into a large external monitor to get additional screen space. When I'm on the go I disconnect and use my laptop's built-in display. For the most part this arrangement works very well; however, I occasionally run into an issue where I'll resize an app on the external, causing it to be too large to fit on the built-in screen when I disconnect. Most apps don't have a problem decreasing their height automatically or resizing to fit when I click the green orb, but some (like iTunes) don't want to cooperate. How can I resize apps like iTunes without reconnecting to my external? Here's a screenshot:

  • How to pass AppleScripts display dialog to Growl or growlnotify?

    I have this simple AppleScript which takes the text in the clipboard and outputs the amount of words and characters used. What I'm trying to do is passing "display dialog" to Growl or growlnotify. I know how to use growlnotify in the shell - it's great and highly customizable (stick note, assign app icon or an image, etc) - but the point is: I don't know how to do it in AppleScript. I google a bit but now time has passed and I decided to post my question here.   • Is there any way to set up a malware-blocking transparent proxy on an Airport Extreme?

    I'd like to add some kind of easily-administered transparent HTTP proxy to my home network. Ideally, it would allow me to, for example, redirect web requests to blacklisted servers into nothing, block certain kinds of content, et al. My home network at the moment consists of a mac mini media server that could -- if the load wasn't huge -- fill this role as well, an Airport Extreme, and a mac laptop that is my main machine. I'm reasonably technically savvy, so don't spare the complicated answers.

  • Can a virus on a windows 7 partition make its way into the OS X partition?

    I have a Windows 7 partition on my MBP that I installed with Boot Camp. I have reason to believe that there was a virus on my Windows 7 partition (did some scans, got some sketchy results from Avira). I decided to just wipe the entire partition using Boot Camp Restore to reformat the old partition and add it back to my OS X partition. I'm wondering however if in the time period I had the two partitions up a virus could have jumped from the Windows 7 partition onto the OS X partition, in which case I now need to worry about a virus on my OS X installation?

  • Cannot do sudo: "/etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440"

    I have a problem: I don't have a root password on my mac. I just have an Admin account, which can do stuff using sudo. Now, I wanted to add my normal user to the /etc/sudoers file as well. Since it did not let me write to that file (even writing using sudo), I did this: sudo chmod u+w /etc/sudoers That worked. But since then I can't do any sudo command anymore on my system. It complains that /etc/sudoers has the wrong mode: $ sudo touch /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440 Segmentation fault It sounds like a bad joke, because now I can't even change the mode back to 0440: $ sudo chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440 Segmentation fault Is there any way to fix this situation? I need to get my sudo abilities back.

  • OS X 10.8.3 + attempt to change VPN settings = no more VPN access

    I am running Mountain Lion and had gotten very tired of re-entering my password at random times when using my school's VPN network (I don't know much about these, but the type is Cisco IPSec according to the setup instructions I followed a while back). In an attempt to make life easier, I followed the instructions here, but, alas, any attempt to connect with VPN was met with the message "A configuration error has occurred. Verify your settings and try connecting again" (or something along those lines.) I then tried to do the steps in the blog post in reverse and change everything back. Upon (supposedly) doing that, though, a new error message came when attempting to connect to VPN: "The negotiation with the VPN server failed. Verify the server address and try reconnecting." Now I have no idea what to do. Is there a way to reset all VPN-related things in my system so that I can follow my school's instructions and just start over?

  • Two monitors with Mac Mini - one displays black despite receiving a signal

    My Mac Mini outputs to my two new monitors - Dell U2311Hs. The LED on the bezel displays blue when receiving a signal, or yellow otherwise. Both screens are displaying blue. It also seems my Mini can see both of them... However, one of them is black. It just displays black, but appears to be receiving a signal (when I turn the Mac off, it then displays No Signal). To make things weirder, on startup, the boot up (white with Apple logo) appears on the right monitor (the one that now displays black). Occasionally, it flickers up on the black screen for 1 second. I have tried Detect Displays. It appears to do nothing. I'm also running a dual monitor KVM. Video connections are DVI-D. How can I fix this situation? Thanks. Update This is the weirdest thing - I used the DVI-D cable that came with the KVM and it seems to have fixed it - I didn't both because it looks identical to any other DVI cable (in form an pin out). So, I will accept an answer if someone can tell me what may be the difference in these cables?

  • How to use graphical line drawing characters with Midnight Commander on OS X under ssh?

    I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters. This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc. I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine. The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports). What locale returns: LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value) Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8 The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different. I filed a bug to mc with this information at http://www.midnight-commander.org/ticket/2339

  • Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS is not recognized anymore on Mac OS X

    I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. It is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. Reset the PRAM. Nope. Checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. I need to say that: a) The device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause). b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. Apple System Profiler says (sorry, Italian language): Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS (2882): ID prodotto: 0x005e ID fornitore: 0x0ccd Versione: 1.10 Numero di serie: 061102005755 Velocità: Fino a 12 Mb/sec Produttore: TerraTec Electronic GmbH ID posizione: 0x04100000 Corrente disponibile (mA): 500 Corrente necessaria (mA): 500 At this point I am pretty sure the Terratec stick is not damaged and there is something wrong with my MacPro. I kindly ask you: Is there a way to force my MacPro recognize the USB device? What can I check? Is there something that caches USB connection that can be reset?   • Safari on Mac OS X lasts beyond Empty Cache

    So, I broke a website with some server changes oops. I roll back the changes I made, hit cmd-R, and oh noes, it is still broken. But I relax thinking, there must be something held in safari's cache so I press the handy 'Empty Cache' button. Hit cmd-R for refresh it is still broken. I'm really worried that I've done it and broken something bigtime. But first decide to check on a hand win xp computer, and voila it works. So the question is how do you "really" clear the cache w/o restart safari, I have many browser windows open a restart every time I make a server side change will ruin me. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • ssh-add insists on passphrase

    I have a new ssh key problem. I have successfully used them for years with Heroku, Git and other servers so I can login without having to issue a passphrase. A few weeks ago, I was unable to push a git repository on my machine to my Heroku and it responded with Permission denied (publickey). Hmm. Everything else but this Heroku function still works. So I ssh-keygen -t rsa -C "newHeroku" with no passphrase (hit return so it would be empty). So I enter: sudo chmod 600 ~/.ssh/newHeroku* Then: ssh-add ~/.ssh/newHeroku.pub Returning return for the passphrase asked it exits without error. The next step is to: ssh-add /Users/sam/.ssh/newHeroku.pub To verify that it's "live" I enter: ssh-add -l To which the output is still The agent has no identities. Okay, to eliminate variables, I repeat the key generation process but entering in a passphrase for a new key. I ssh-add the new key and get the "Enter passphrase" as expected. Now this is why I'm posting here and not on a Heroku blog because ssh-add fails because the passphrase I used keeps getting rejected. It appears, even though I have no problem with my keys elsewhere, that something is wrong with passphrase because even though I get no errors, I get errors when on the one that expects a passphrase. One question, should I expect the Passphrase request for ssh-add when I have not generated a passphrase? It's been suggested that this is a clue and I offer it. Or maybe I have a poor understanding of what ssh-add is doing. Wouldn't be the first time I asked a stupid Q. Also, I'm on Lion and have updated no system updates in the few weeks of this period except application updates.

  • 1 iPhone, 2 (potentially 3) Macs......& Google Apps Sync?!

    Currently I use a beast of a G5 Mac at work for all my software/web development, an iMac G5 at home for personal use & a MacBook Pro for when i'm on the go. At work we make heavy use of all the Google Apps features such as calendar & docs etc. We all have an address book (local mac application) that gets synced with a list of contacts stored on our mail server. I want to be able to integrate the Google Apps calendar with my iPhone calendar (or even just iCal - which i can then sync to the iPhone). Essentially I want all three Macs to have the Google calendar synced to their version of iCal including the iPhone. I've heard that Google Sync handles something along these lines but i'm unsure if it's going to fulfill my needs? I'm trying my best to avoid having to use MobileMe..... Help greatly appreciated, Kind regards

  • Pixelated PDF in Apple Preview slideshow mode, but not in regular window

    I have a PDF which is a presentation exported from OpenOffice. Two of the slides in this presentation have embedded .eps graphs. When I run the presentation using Preview's slideshow mode, the graphs are severely aliased and the axes are illegible. But when I just view the PDF in regular windowed mode, the graphs are properly antialiased and legible. Is there any way to get Preview to do the same display that it does in windowed mode, but in fullscreen (no window title, no menu bar)? (I don't want to just run the presentation from OpenOffice, because OpenOffice shows the same horrible aliasing effects plus it takes about 30 seconds to show the slide. I don't have, and don't want, Acrobat or MS Office. However, please do feel free to suggest other programs for doing PDF-based slideshows.)
