• Weird noise while scanning, using scanimage and a Canon Lide 35

  I'm trying to scan a bunch of images, using xsane's scanimage : scanimage --format=tiff --batch --batch-prompt This command scans the first picture perfectly, but as soon as I press enter, the scanner makes a weird noise, and the scanning "arm" moves very, very slowly. If I stop scanimage and start again, it scans normally again. Is there another scanimage option that I need to add? I've checked the man page, but can't see what I'm missing. Edit: the problem seems to be that the scanning "arm" doesn't go back to it's original position after the first scan.

• FTP in NetBeans 6.1

  Is there an FTP browser hiding away in NetBeans 6.1? The help manual doesn't even suggest FTP exists. All I've been able to find so far is a tree viewer in the Services panel (no edit controls) and the ability to upload projects, folders and specific files from the Projects/Files views. Is there anywhere to delete or rename or will I have to keep switching back to my browser? I can see from the previews that there's a nice FTP controller in 6.5 but I'm not desperate enough to completely convert to a beta (yet).

  I'm writing a log file viewer for a web application and for that I want to paginate through the lines of the log file. The items in the file are line based with the newest item on the bottom. So I need a tail() method that can read n lines from the bottom and supports an offset. • Unable to retrieve the complete description string of the event log record

  Hi All, I have an MFC application that reads and displays event log records using the ::ReadEventLog() API. The problem is with reading the "Description" message string of the event log record. The MFC application is unable to read the complete "Description" message string and displays only some part of it. However the Windows System Event Log Viewer reads and displays the complete "Description" message string correctly. I have ensured that my MFC application reads the entire "Description" message string by retrieving all the strings as provided by the "NumStrings" and "StringOffset" member variables of the EVENTLOGRECORD structure and merging all of them. Also as mentioned in MSDN my application loads the Source Name specific message library file (whose path is specified in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application[SourceName]) that further contains additional message string information and merges it with the earlier read strings. I am still unable to get the entire "Description" message string. Please provide any help towards resolving the issue. Regards, Santosh.

One picture and page title as a link. I was looking for many days now and I still couldn't find anything which does the same thing. • Gnu screen, how to update dynamically the title of a window?

  I googled a lot, but I can't find the answer I'm looking for... I'm trying to improve the aspect of GNU Screen using the screenrc file, I tuned colors, status line, caption and the list of the loaded windows. The only thing I'm not able to achieve is getting the caption with the current executed command as in this picture, note the vim caption in the right pane. What I currently have is this, and what I would like to obtain is having captions (and if possible also hardstatus line) with |0 less| 1 man instead of the current |0 bash| 1 bash. How to do this?   I have a document with hundreds of images. When I save the first image (right click and save picture) it ends up with a good resolution as shown below: However, when I save the document as Web Page, Filtered, all the images end up really low-res. Here's the exact same image afterwards: I've tried the following options in the Save As dialog with no luck: In Tools > Web Options... > Pictures > Target Monitor I've set the Pixels Per Inch to the highest value, 120. In Tools > Compress Pictures > Target Output I've set it to Print (220 ppi). Any ideas would be appreciated.

  Hi, I'm trying to find a generic Socket 940 CPU fan that will fit the air duct in an XW9300. Note that two different CPU fan mounting schemes have been used on this machine. One has two grommets in the motherboard that the CPU fan screws into and the other has a plastic collar and base plate. The form factor I'm looking for is the former (see the picture below). Two HP part numbers for fans in this form factor are 411454-001 (shown below) and 416055-001. Note that the dimensions are important as the machine has an air duct that fits over the fan. Can anyone tell me the manufacturer and model of an equivalent generic part? Better yet, do you know somewhere (preferrably in the UK) from which such an item can be obtained?

  In my operating systems class we were shown a picture depicting a hierarchy of memory starting from most expensive and fastest at the top and least expensive and slowest at the bottom. At the very top was registers and underneath it was cache. The professor said that the best place to run programs is in cache. I was wondering why programs can't be run in registers? Also, how can a program load itself into cache? Isn't the cache something that's controlled by the CPU and works automatically without software control?

• Change desktop background at school

  On school computers, I can log in with a user account stored on the school network (something like that, I have no experience in networking and this sort of stuff). Everything is fine and dandy and totally works as it should, but there is one thing that I find annoying. Apparently for some reason I can't change my background to anything more than a couple of different solid colors with our school's logo still stuck in the middle. (the original background is a white logo on black background. If I change it to a different color, the central 6x6 inch black/white logo still remains, only the surrounding color is changed.) It may have been set by school administrators or something, I don't really know. I find this really ugly. Is there any way to change a setting so that I can set the background to any picture I wish? (like on a home pc...) Thanks.

• Routing to a Terminal Services Cluster

  I am trying to connect to a Load Balanced Windows 2008 R2 cluster using Remote Desktop Services. I have no trouble connecting to the the Servers' IP addresses (.253.16 and .253.17) or the Cluster address (.253.20) from inside the subnet (.253). The trouble is when I try to connect from the other subnet(.251). I can remote to the other non-clustered servers (.253.12 and .253.15) inside the .253 subnet from the .251 without an issue. I receive a ping reply from the cluster and other servers when I am on the .251 subnet. But when I try to connect via remote desktop it times out but only to any of the IPs on the cluster (.20,.17,.16).   You know, you see pictures like below and sort of chuckle until you actually have to deal with it. I have just inherited something that looks like the picture below. The culture of the organization does not tolerate down time very well, yet I have been tasked to 'clean it up'. The network functions as it is, and there doesn't seem to be rush to get it done, but I will have to tackle the bear at some point. I get the ugly eye when I mention anything about weekends. So my question goes, is there sort of a structured approach to this problem? • How to open Total Commander with specific group of tabs open?

  In TotalCommander I have saved the open tabs on the left and on the right windows in a *.tab file. But I want to put the *.tab file on my desktop and doubleklick it and TC (which is not already running) should open with just those tabs. And I could have different *.tc files on my desktop then. I remember this worked before? If so how can I fix it or change a setting? (I know I can open them again from inside TotalCommander as seen in the picture but that's not what I am asking for here.)

• Rendering PDFs from a database inside MVC views?

  I was wondering if it's possible to do this without using 3rd party compnents in MVC 3. (I am open to free components though.) There are a couple of links out there but they seem to be mostly concerned with reporting and other code samples that do claim to do this sort of thing don't seem to compile. I'm not having any trouble saving and retrieving the PDFs to and from my database, but when I return the PDF as a File or a FileStreamResult the user is prompted with a download. A more desirable approach would be to actually render the PDFs inside the browser. I've had a look at iTextSHarp, it does the job to an extent, but it's not a complete solution. For example it will display the PDF inside the view if and only if the client has Adobe Reader installed, otherwise it prompts for a download. So technically, I'm mostly looking for a PDF viewer. Any ideas?

  Got a new XFX GTX260^2 video card. The only problem is the "Minimum power" is 500W on the box. I've got a Chieftec 450AA PSU with just a minimal number of attached stuff (1hdd, WD green; 6gb (4module) ram; dvd writer). Bought a cable for the 6pin power input on the card. Got picture, works in every aspect. Still. Should I get a new PSU (like a Corsair or Antec 600W)? Will the card perform slower with this PSU? (Yeah the last part is a particular question but in I'm also asking in generic. I was wondering about this so many times and I hope we'll put and end for this question for once and for all.)

• HP Photosmart 7450 Prints Noise On Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

  I have received a working (in its last location) HP Photosmart 7450 printer. I connected it up to my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit workstation, and the driver was (apparently) installed. The problem is that whenever I try to print from it -- test page, text from notepad, picture, whatever -- it spins through a half dozen sheets of paper, some of which have fractions of text on them, but most of which are either blank or have line noise printed on them. Noise similar to what was printed out on ye olde laserjet printers when the postscript interpreter failed. HP's web site only has a "use the included driver in Windows 7, be happy" instruction. The driver has been removed and added several times. The printer was previously attached to a XP Home computer and worked correctly without incident. Does anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting before I drop this printer in the river?

Here are the classes (abstract example): Employee { ID; Name; Roles[]; //What Employee can do } Order { Price; Employee Manager; Employee Executive; //Maybe wrong english. The person which perform order } Employee can be Manager and Executive in the order at the same time. This means that Employee role is not fixed. I have to group orders by employees and finally get IGrouping with Employee key. So .GroupBy(el=new {el.Manager,el.Executive}) is not allowed. I considered some tricks with IEqualityComparable, but found no solution. If somrbody will help I'll be vary glad, thank you.

• Error when running MSpec - how do I troubleshoot?

  I am following this guide to installing and using MSpec, but at the step where he runs MSpec for the first time, I get the following error: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///[...]\Nehemiah\Nehemiah.Specs\bin\Debug\Nehemiah.Specs.dll' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded. I have - to my knowledge - done everything more or less exactly like he did up to this step, except where differences arise because he's using VS2008 and I'm using VS2010, and everything has worked so far. The project Nehemijah.Specs (and the entire solution) builds without problem, both in Visual Studio and on my build server, and I can't find anything useful in Event Viewer (although I might not be looking in the right place here...) What to do?
