• Open Source Project all dressed up but nowhere to go...

  Over the past 2 years myself and a colleague have built an online statistical analysis application using a mixture of silverlight, wcf and R. I (a c# programmer) wrote all the silverlight and wcf stuff whilst my colleague (a statistician) came up with the stats algorithms and wrote the R code. Now we think that this app is fairly unique - a rich gui online statistics application that is much more intuitive than all the other online stat apps that I've seen. But despite this we don't really know where to go with the project, mainly for the following reasons: 1) Its fairly complicated stuff - without the mix of programing and stats skills it would be difficult for anyone to "get into" the project and contribute. 2) We are stalled by a lack of a proper place to host the site. Currently it sits on the family windows 7 media centre, not exactly the best place to host it as it could interfere with the missus trying to watch Corrie/Friends/Oprah etc. Soo, anyone got any ideas on how to move forward with this? I guess that my strength is programing not marketing so despite working hard at this for the past couple of years I feel that I've reached a dead end! Also, does anyone know of any free windows hosting for open source projects? If I could find a proper place to put the app I might feel re-energised about the whole thing. • When is the right time to join open source project for programmer?

  Most of the newcomers in programming start with basic projects to start with programming. Most of the C++ progammers spend some time with puzzles and contests but this is not always helpful. Sometimes you've to spend some time on real projects. Starting your own open source project could be a problem in self-learning for newbie cause of lack of mentors and peers who can't look at your code and give suggestions. Open source projects can solve this problem, some projects could be best suited for new programmers. Besides everybody is newbie at some point. So i'll try and make this question a bit from beginners perspective. I tried few questions on stack overflow before asking this like How do i join & Bare minimum you need and how to get involved with open source and what level of programming etc. But this is not helping me when it comes to self-evaluating with skills. How to find that out ? How can i check what it takes to join open source project and am i really that comfortable with huge source code etc. My question is when to consider yourself comfortable joining open source programming ? I mean how will you test yourself that you're ready to take burden of big/small projects of open source ? how will you test yourself to see if you could work with version control/other programmers/tight schedule etc ?

• Finding back to an old project that was turned upside-down by the developer. Your workflow?

  after some time I'm asked to work on a heavy web-project I did (layout, html/css) about a year ago. There are some changes that have to be made, basically some css and js stuff. By now the whole project was turned upside down by the developer. It gives me a hard time to connect to the work of him, especially because my old files and file-structure won't work anymore. Thats why I need a up-to-date working-environment, but I don't want to change the files on the server directly. Need some testing and improving while doing this. So, what is your workflow in such a case? Thought about copying the whole/parts of the server to a own homeserver. But even that will be a big task for me (I'm more the front-end-guy). Would be great if theres a way to shrink it down (php, mysql,...), since I only need to change some css/html javascript. Are there any tools available? Love to hear how you handle such situations. • Case studies for successful service (project) based software development businesses without constant overtime from its employees [closed]

  I work for an IT company that is primarily services (project) based rather than product based. All software engineers are salaried. The company has set new expectations that everyone should work 48 hours per week instead of 40. Note, this isn't occasional overtime due to crunches. This is the new 40. The reasoning is that this enables the company to provide benefits to its employees such as monetary incentives and training because the company is more profitable. more hours worked = more billable hours = larger profit I understand the need for profitability and the occasional crunch time and have put in the extra hours when it was needed and beneficial to the project. However, I am also very sensitive to work life balance and have raised my concerns about the the new expectation. My employer is open to other methods to increase profitability so I hold hope that we can turn things around before it becomes a horrible place to work. How does a services based company become more profitable without increasing the number of hours expected from it's salaried employees? Are there any case studies showing the pros and cons of consistent overtime? Are there any case studies for a successful service based business model (for software development companies) that does not require consistent overtime from its employees?

• Visual Studio 2005 "Add Web Deployment Project..." not showing up for web application projects.

  I downloaded the Web Deployment Project plug-in for Visual Studio 2005. I installed it. I have a project that I am working on that is a Web Application Project. The Add Web Deployment Project Build menu selection is not in the Build Menu or Solution Explorer. If I create a raw test Web Site Project, the menu item magically appears. Is this by design or am I missing something. Also, I am completely up to date on all the VS 2005 updates.

  Let's say I want to make a simple project tracking system. A manager can create a project. Then he can create tasks for that project. Team members can record the hours they work for each task or for the project as a whole. Is the following design for the t_timesheet table a good idea? timesheet_id - primary key, autoincrement project_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_project task_id - nullable, foreign key constraint to t_task user_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_user hours - decimal Or should I do something like this: timesheet_id - primary key, autoincrement task_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_task user_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_user hours - decimal In the second option, I intend to always have a record in t_task labelled "miscellaneous items" with a foreign key to the relevant t_project record. Then I'll be able to track all hours for a project that aren't for any particular task. Are any of the ideas above good? What would be better?

  How can I change default values of "source folders on build path" and "default output folder" in "Dynamic Web Project" wizard in Eclipse, probably in the way as we do for "Java Project" in Windows Preferences Java Build Path The purpose is: each time I create new Dynamic Web Project, the wizard should show default source and output folders of my choice. Since this option is available for Java project so I believe there should be something similar for Web Projects too but I am unable to find it. BTW I tried changing defaults of Java project but it does not effect dynamic web projects.

  Hey, I'm trying to grab my project and generate an Archetype from it via : archetype:create-from-project The thing is, that my project has src/main/java package structure com.sample.app, but the archetype must have it as I want (org.example.game) ... Ideally as user want when generating the project from archetype, but that is impossible I suppose. It would have to grab groupId and artifactId and generate archetype-resources/src/main/java based on this input. Anyway, that's why there is this argument I suppose : packageName mvn archetype:create-from-project -DpackageName=org.example.game But it doesn't work and there is still archetype-resources/src/main/java/org/sample/game ..

• How to create a new IDA project based on an existing one with different offsets?

  I have an existing IDA Pro project for a C166 processor embedded application. This project already has many functions, variables, etc defined. There are different versions of the embedded application I am looking at. The different versions of the application are 99% the same, but with slight variations in code and data that cause functions and variables to be at different memory offsets. I want to create a new IDA project for a different version of the application. I would like to somehow import all of my function and variable definitions from my existing IDA project. I would like IDA to recognize the signatures of the existing function definitions and define them at there new location in the new project. How can I do this? Are there certain plugins for IDA I can chain together?

  I have two projects in my solution 1- asp.net web project. 2- wcf serivce project. 3- other common projects between two listed above Currently on the local dev machine I have to run two visual studio instance to run both projects in debug mode. That makes the system run out of resources as these projects share some other project in the soultion which are heavy in files. Is there a way I can hookup the wcf project on a sinlge visual stodio instance that I am using to debug the asp.net web applicaiton. I do not want to combine the web and wcf project in to one. • Why does the CPU window always appear when trying to debug my project after a rebuild in Delphi 2010

  Hi, Whenever I rebuild my application and try to step into a break-point the CPU window always appears. From what I understand the CPU window appears when DCU does not match up with the source file, however, in my case the DCU's are defintely being re-compiled and there are no old ones lying around or anything like that. The strange thing here is if I close down the application and re-open the project, place the breakpoint and run it works fine. I can even modify files and just press F9 to run the project and it works fine....it only seems to be when I rebuild the project (via IDE Project menu or the project context menu) that this CPU window never breaks into the source (even though it can find it!). I also noticed in the callstack a unit called Generics is always the top of the stack, never the unit my break point is in, this is no way related to where my break point is. Any ideas?

  I'm completely mystified. I do not understand why Eclipse does not show me my list of projects! And all the answers I've seen to similar questions do not mention any 'go here and do that' type of answers. I tried 'Import/General/Existing Projects into Workspace/browse-to...' but that told me the project was already in the workspace. But I KNEW THAT! The project menu does not have an 'open project' option!!!! There is no 'open workspace' option. How do people open Eclipse and 'resume working'??? What is the single, dependable, repeatable option for opening the 'project tree' to show my project? [or tell me my expectations that Java people are smarter are way off base!] Thanks, Kimball

  I'm trying to create an add-in for VS2008 to automate the unit tests. The test classes are located in a different project of the same solution. After the test class file is generated, I want to add it to that project automatically and make it active document. I could easily locate the test project, and I also found that testProject.DTE.ItemOperations.AddExistingItem(fileName) can be used to add an existing item to a project. However, this call always adds the item to the current project, instead of the testProject. I'm sure there must be an easy way to do it, but I couldn't figure it out. Your help is much appreciated.

• NetBeans/C++ - how to choose the "main file" other than when creating a project?

  Hello, when I am creating a C++ project in NetBeans, there is a toggle button "Create main file" - I just enter a name for it and that's all. The problem is that I cannot put that file in a "different" folder than right in the main project folder. And I am "used" to put all the source files in a "src" folder (and its subfolders), but at the "project creation time" I "cannot" put the main file there. So I tried "not" to create the main file at project creation, but after that create manually the "src" file and then create a "cpp" file in that folder (this is "allowed" in NetBeans). But NetBeans could not find "which" is the main file. So how can I choose the main file other than when creating a project (if it is possible)?

• How to figure out what error my Java Eclipse project has?

  I've created a Java project from existing source with an Ant build script in Eclipse. I cannot run my project because Eclipse tells me that there is at least one error in it. Now, I know that the project runs fine on the command line, so I suspect an Eclipse configuration error. As far as I can tell, the only feedback that I have from Eclipse is a little red X on my project in the Package Explorer window and dialog window when I try to run the project says there are errors in the project This is all wonderful, but what is the error? Is there a "show me the next error" button somewhere? In the past, on other Eclipse projects, I've notice other little red X's on folders containing source files with errors, the little red X's appear on the source files as well. I scanned (manually) through all of the source files and I haven't found any other red X's (again, where is the "next error" button?). If I select the "Proceed" button I am greeted with a java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError for my main class, which makes me suspect a classpath issue. I've checked the classpath, and I'm fairly certain that it's correct. Is there a way to see the exact jvm command line that Eclipse is invoking? I realize that it might be invoking the JVM programmatically, and not on a "real" command line. In any case, is there a way, other than the run configuration dialog, to see what is actually happening when I hit the "Proceed" button?

• How to organize the work when project needs to be re-implemented due to poor code quality?

  Hi, I have joined a very small where one main developer has been buiding the web app (.NET 4.0) during ~6 months. The project should be delivered within next 2 months. After first look at the code I can say that I would never allow it to go to production (things like catch { }, not tests at all with WebForms etc). So the code quality is incredibly low. My task is to improve that and still deliver the solution. So I plan to start with unit testing and MVC2 reimplementing most of the functionality (though using some of the existing code). I estimate that I will need about 6 weeks to catch up with the current progress and be on te same functionality level as the application will be in 6 months. The problem is that the main developer who has been working on the project does not seem to be very 'professional' and skillful (he seems to be really starting in IT and many basic things are unknown to him). It will take significant amount of time and effort to educate him how to do the proper testing, development and apply some patterns. I am ready to take responsibility for the reimplemnting the application but at the same time I don't want the main developer to be on idle but as he won't be able to significantly contribute to the better-world project at this stage I am not sure what would the best way to keep productivity high for both of us. Currently I think following solution is good enough: He proceeds doing what he does until I will catch up with him and then start working on a new project together. The problem is that of course this approach is not very productive as one developer will do better-world project while the other will proceed with what he did, effectively doing similar tasks. Can you suggest how we could better organise the work together in order to be most efficient for the overall project? Thanks, Dmitriy.

In this code i am not able to see the benefit. 2) How should i decide how many threads should i create ? 3) Are their any opensource libraries which does that 4) The file which file receiver receives is valid and not corrupted but checksum (i used FileUtils of common-io) does not match. Whats the problem? 5) This code gives out of memory when used with large file(above 100 Mb) i.e. because byte array which is created. How can i avoid? I know this is a very bad code but i have to write this in one day -:). Please suggest any other good way to do this? Thanks Shekhar

From what I've read you're supposed to use a separate repository for each project. No problem there, but where do the Visual Studio solution files (.sln) go? Should there be a separate repository with just an .sln file? Ideally the projects that use the shared libraries should all use the same version, and the solution "All Projects Solution" should build without errors, but sometimes we need to branch the shared libraries. What is the best way to do this, and how would the repositories be setup? How do I get a working copy of a certain branch/tag of the Website 1 solution when every project is in a separate repository. Do I have to pull each one separately, or write a script to do it all at once? Can tortoise hg do that for me? Any other tips to make this process easier?

  Hello, I've got two projects in WPF and one project is the main one and the second one is just for testing (it uses files of the main project - files are added via Project - add - Existing items... - selected file - add as link so that the file is only in the main project really). Folders with projects are these: C:\Work\...\Projects\Main C:\Work\...\Projects\XXXTestProject where XXX stands for different parts of the Main project which I test separately.
