• ldap samba user access issue

  I have a samba share that is on the LAN. It is auth'd via ldap. Users access file system via ad windows shares. There are shortcuts in directories that point to dir's on samba. Typically a user will click the shortcut to the smb dir, and will be met with a permission denied error. Upon closing explorer and reopening, it will work. DNS is handled by the domain controller, and that is the only server any of the machines use for DNS. Nothing in eventvwr. Only see successful auth entries in samba log. Any ideas?

• Windows clients cannot access machine running DHCP server

  I'm trying to setup a small LAN, using an Ethernet switch, an Arch Linux server, and around 10 Windows XP machines. This network has no outside connections. The Arch machine has a self configured ip address (configured with ip addr add 192.168.0.1 dev eth0), and acts as a DHCP server(using dhcpd). This portion works great, windows clients get IP addresses, the correct gateway settings, perfect. However, the clients cannot connect to each other, or to the dhcp server. When I run ping 192.168.0.1 on any client, I get no response, same happens if I try to ping any other client. On the gateway machine, I can't ping any of the clients either. Any help would be much appreciated!

  i have some devices connected in the same physical network (LAN) but in different subnets. I want to detect them all with the ARP from my computer. My Computer is also in the same physical network but on a different subnet. ! The devices have no arp protocol installed (yet). Is it possible to detect the devices (with or withour ARP installed on every device)? If the devices have a MAC-address but no IP-address, can ARP still detect the machines?

  I've set up Remote Connection according to : http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/allow-remote-desktop-connections-from-outside-your-home-network That is, Allow remote connections to the computer you want to access. Make sure Remote Desktop is able to communicate through your firewall. Find the IP address of the computer on your home network that you want to connect to. Open your router's configuration screen and forward TCP port 3389 to the destination computer's IP address. Find your router's public IP address so that Remote Desktop can find it on the Internet. When I'm inside the LAN, RDC works flawlessly. When I try to connect to the ip given by my ISP it cannot connect. I've setup port forwarding for 3389 on my netgear router. Thanks!

• Run 2008 R2 Service under 2000 Domain Account

  I'm trying to get a service to run under a domain account. When I try to add the account, I get the error The account name is invalid or does not exist, or the password is invalid for the account name specified I know the account exists and the password is correct. I am also having trouble adding it manually to the "Log on as a service" setting, I get the error An extended error has occured. Failed to save Local Policy Database After a day of research I'm starting to suspect it has to do with it being a 2008 R2 server trying to use a 2000 domain account. I've tried to change the LAN Manager authentication level and the Minimum session security looks okay per my Google digging. I'm not sure what else I can do?

• Network share not always available

  Hello everybody, we have a windows 2003 server with a shared directory. I've seen this thread but this wasn't any help: http://superuser.com/questions/58890/the-specified-network-name-is-no-longer-available I have a ping -t running from 3 pc's (vista and two windows 7) they all work. the things appear when two users enter the network share then this 'network share is no longer available' appears and the explorer windows turn white. after f5 or refresh the shared directory is back. this is really strange. there is no anti virus or kasparsky running on either end. this is all in a LAN. the internet connection is really stable, so it's really strange can it be a router issue? I have checked the eventlog on the server for diskfailure related messages, but there are none.

Some constraints: my ISP now provides 120 Mbit bandwidth - the router must be able to handle it I have 3 computers and a laptop at home - the router must have at least 4 LAN ports and the WAN port I need to be able to do the following in parallel: use bittorrent with ~1000 connections transfer files from one home computer to another at high speed access one home computer from my workplace I don't really need wireless I don't really want two boxes to serve all these purposes. So I was searching for a router with 1 Gbit ports, jumbo frame support and good reviews, but haven't really found a promising candidate so far. Any suggestions?

• Selectively routing traffic via ethernet or wifi, with proper DNS (Mac OS X 10.6)

  When I'm at work, I access various intranet pages as well as the wider Internet through ethernet. However, the company LAN blocks some ports (e.g. Google Calendar). I can get to those through WiFi. So, I gave the Airport priority, and then using route add, I set up selective routing: all intranet traffic goes through the ethernet and everything else via WiFi: sudo route add 10.0.0.0/8 <intranet gateway>. However, there are a number of intranet sites that have their own DNS; i.e., hr.company.com only resolves on the intranet. The only way that I can get the DNS to work properly is to add the internal DNS server to the Airport DNS listing, however I fear that when I go elsewhere and forget, this will break things. What's the right way to get the DNS to resolve using this setup?

  While imaging some computers today, I started to wonder... what if two LAN MAC addresses on two different computers matched?... That would cause some problems. I later came to understand that the MAC address' 48-bit address space contains potentially 248 or 281,474,976,710,656 possible MAC addresses. [ in other-words, a lot of networking devices ] How are these MAC addresses determined? Will we ever run out of them? ( I know the second question is speculation, but there are a lot of devices that require a mac addresses...) Do MAC addresses get recycled?

• Access MacZFS via network from XBMC

  I have a ZFS RAID (zpool with three drives) hooked up to my Mac that I want to share in my LAN so that the XBMC client on my OUYA console hooked up to the television can read the drive and use it to stream my movies and television shows onto the television set. I've searched around for a bit but so far haven't found anything that helped me with it. I know that when connecting to the Mac with SSH I can't just access the drive due to different formatting. What do I have to do so that XBMC will be able to read it? How do I share it?

• Wireless adapter won't enable

  I bought a d-link dwa-125, plugged it in and windows recognized it right away and said everything was good to go. But there were no connection options. When I open up the network control panel and have it show me the adapters... the wireless adapter is greyed out and says it is disabled. So I tell it to enable. It says is it enabling, then says it is enabled... but the adapter stayed greyed out saying disabled. I am running 7 x64. I have reinstalled drivers, connected it via lan and had it update drivers.. same problem. It works just fine on any other computer in the house, just not this one.

• Server 2008 R2 file access permissions

  I'm finding it awkward to sort out permissions for file sharing and access on my LAN. I've created an account on the server node (as a normal user) and shared a drive that has 2 folders at the root, one is for personal file storage and the other shared files, if I connect to the shared area from a workstation running windows 7 and log-in using the account I created on the server, I can look through directories but can't look in some (which I wanted as I changed the permissions for that to happen), but my problem is although the permissions are set for this user account to have full control of the specific folder I can't create a folder in that area or upload files to that folder. Could someone explain why this is? Thanks in advanced

  When I try connecting to my wireless network it attempts to connect then gives up. There's something strange going on with the mac's.   I need to sync some folders between two Win 7 machines. While they are connected to the same LAN, they can't see each-other over Windows Networking since sharing is disabled on both of them (security reasons). Do you know any sync app which can work over IP? The folder I need to sync has 500,000 files in it (80 GB in total), so the sync app should be pretty efficient. At the moment I copy the files from one machine to the other over FTP, but it takes forever, since a separate connection is opened for each file. Or maybe you know some app which can efficiently transfer a large number of files between two machines on the Internet?

• Determining where a file is being cached

  I've got a debian webserver running apache, from which I regularly download an executable using IE 8 on an XP virtual machine (over LAN). However, I realised that somewhere along the line that I've been repeatedly running the same version (and wondering why my changes weren't being displayed). A Ctrl+F5 in IE will let me download the new version (although the page is always updated with a simple F5). This makes me suspect that the caching is happening in windows/IE, but I'm not certain. Wherever it's happening, is there an easy way to prevent it at the server? Eventually, we're hoping to offer the software to the entire company, and we'd like to avoid having to tell everyone to do a Ctrl+F5 every time there's an updated version.

• When connected to VPN through Windows 7 running under OS X via VMWare Fusion, does traffic from the OS X side go through the VPN?

  I only have a rudimentary knowledge of VPNs. My understanding is that, in most network configurations, when a client is connected remotely to a VPN server, all network traffic passes through the VPN server before going to the client, and all data coming from the client passes through the VPN server before going out over the wider Internet. I run Windows 7 using VMWare Fusion under OS X Lion. If I access a web page in Safari, say, on the OS X side of things, does that traffic pass through the VPN server? Or does it bypass it because the two OS's are regarded as separate network devices by my LAN? I would appreciate any insight anyone can provide. Thanks.

• Can Remote Desktop connect only 2 monitors when the client has 3 or 4 monitors connected?

  I have three monitors (all 1920x1200) connected to my desktop and I would like to RDP into another computer (running Windows Server 2003) and use only two of my three monitors. The main monitor is used for notification from the LAN like email, build status, etc. I've tried modifying the .rdp file to have a higher resolution (i.e. 3840x1200 ) which sort of works but the bits per pixel goes down to 8 and you have to manually resize the window which means that you need to change it to around 3840x1150. If I supply /span to the commandline it gives me a bit more than 3840 spanned across the three monitors (is there perhaps a limitation of say 4096 for the maximum resolution?). WORKAROUND: Connect twice to the same computer.   I would like to build a file server for my home network using Ubuntu. It will serve files from RAID1 configured disks, either in the OS or in hardware. It will be connected to a Gigabit ethernet LAN. The disks will use an encrypted file system. It will serve samba shares. I would like a recommendation on what kind of processing power/memory I would need to build a box that would be able to sustain the full capacity of the Gigabit ethernet connection in a file transfer for a single connection with the overhead of serving from an encrypted disk. I'm not looking to build a dream server, I just want enough processing capacity for high performance (and reliable) file sharing and spend as little as possible for it. This may be tangential, but what kind of hardware would I need to have a server be able to reliably go into a low power mode when no requests are being made of it?

• IIS7.5 website (mostly) inaccessible from the outside world

  On the network firewall, I opened up port 80 and forwarded it to the Windows Server 2008 R2 running IIS 7.5. Port 80 is open in the Windows firewall. On the LAN, the website is accessible without any trouble. When accessed from the outside, I can access it only 3 times every few hours before access to it cuts out from the outside. There aren't any access limits in IIS or the network's firewall as far as I can tell. IIS is running PHP 5.3. The default website has been deleted. The bindings for the website's domain are set for mydomain.com *:80 and mydomain.com 192.168.0.3:80

  I need to secure a dedicated server for intranet use, the server is managed so will have software based security, but what other security should be considered for enterprise level security? The intranet is a host for an ECM (Alfresco) managing and storing sensitive documents. • PC reboots instead of shutting down, no software problem. What could be the cause?

  Hi, first of all: I'm not sure if superuser is the right site for my question and google didn't help. I have a pc here that prefers rebooting to shuting down. Everytime I try to shut the pc down it reboots, however it is possible to turn the pc off by pressing the power button. The problem is not windows-specific, the Ubuntu LiveCD does exactly the same that's why I said that it is no software problem. I checked wake on LAN, it is disabled and I also resetted the BIOS settings to factory default. That might not mean that it can't be a BIOS problem but I don't know what else to try here. I did not check any hardware yet but nothing exploded so far. I don't know what could have caused this behaviour as it is not my PC. The Mainboard is a ASUS P5Q-E P45.

• Seemingly random disconnections on Windows Server 2008 R2

  So I have a box running a Windows Server 2008 R2 in my LAN, which is running, among other things, a voip server used by other people. I myself am in the same subnet with the server, while the other users are not. Now, maybe on average twice a day, all the other users get disconnected from the server (and if I take a remote desktop connection to it, I'm not able to open any web pages either). These disconnections usually last only about 5 seconds, but sometimes they may last up to a minute. What could possibly cause this? I have all the updates installed from windows update and the motherboard of the server is asus p5b deluxe (if that is of any interest). edit: Forgot to mention that my own internet connectivity stays intact while the server's does not, and both computers are behind the same router.

  I have a machine with a pfsense running. It is configured with three ethernet cards. LAN 192.168.2.1/21 WAN1 200.41.X.2/24 WAN2 200.41.X.3/24 ISP Gateway 200.41.X.1 This is a connection with 5 different IP addresses. WAN1 and WAN2 are directly connected to my ISP router. I need a way to configure some clients navigating through WAN1 and some through WAN2. I am new to pfsense so, please, if you can send me some examples to do this.
