• I need to know the reasons why learning Linux Shell Scripting (BASH) benefits me as a PHP developer

  I have been developing web sites/applications using the LAMP stack for almost 5 years. Currently I am interested to dig more into Linux OS, specifically BASH but from a web developer perspective, not from sys admin perspective. I am not intending to administrate Linux Servers. Only, I want to know, does learning shell scripting benefit me as a PHP developer? Does it make me a better, more skilled developer, or just its something irrelevant? Reasons, and examples are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• How do I restore tab-completion on shell variables on the bash command-line?

  I've long set my most-recently visited directories to shell variables d1, d2, etc. On an ancient Fedora machine I could type a command like $ cp $d1/ and the shell would replace $d1 with text like /home/acctname/projects/blog/ and would then show me the contents of .../blog, like any tab-completion. Now, both ubuntu wheezy/sid and fedora 16 just -escape the '$', and naturally there are no completions to show. You can see this behavior in action in an OSX Terminal window. On 10.8, do something like ls $HOME/ to see what I mean. Is there a bash shell variable or option that can restore the old behavior? man bash suggests this is a bug: complete (TAB) Attempt to perform completion on the text before point. Bash attempts completion treating the text as a variable (if the text begins with $), username (if the text begins with ~), hostname (if the text begins with @), or command (including aliases and functions) in turn. If none of these produces a match, filename completion is attempted. I get the above described completion when a token starts with '~' or a letter. It's just '$'-completion that's broken.

• Using u32 together with extension headers (how to jump over them?)

  I'm trying to filter on some parts of the payload, for an IPv6 packet with extension headers (for instance Destination Options). ip6tables works fine with conditions like --proto udp or --dport 109, even when the packet has extension headers. Netfilter clearly knows how to jump over Destination Options to find the UDP header. Now, I would like to use the u32 module to match a byte in the payload (say "I want the third byte of the payload to be 42). If the packet has no extension headers something like --u32 "48&0x0000ff00=0x2800"` (48 = 40 bytes for the IPv6 header + 8 for the UDP header) works fine, If the packet has a Destination Options, it no longer matches. I would like to write a rule that will work whether the packet has Destination Options or not. I do not find a way to tell Netfilter to parse until the UDP header (something that it is able to do, otherwise --dport 109 would not work) then to leave u32 parse the rest. I'm looking for a simple way, otherwise, as BatchyX mentions, I could write a kernel module doing what I want.

I guess wait() and waitpid() system calls would come handy but I am not that comfortable with them. I tried reading the man pages but still am in the dark. Can someone please explain in a layman's language how to achieve this in UNIX system programming? And does it have something to do with SIGCONT and SIGSTP signals?

• How do I source a shell script for Node Version Manager?

  Hi and thanks for looking! I am new to Linux/Ubuntu, but I have set up an Ubuntu box on which to run Node.js. I have had moderate success, but now I need to be able to easily upgrade my version of Node. Many folks recommend using Node Version Manager. I followed the directions, but when I try to do something like this: nvm ls I get a messaging stating that No command NVM found I have gone back to check the steps I followed to install NVM, but there is one part that is tricky for may and I think to be the culprit: sourcing the file for bash. From the instructions: To activate nvm, you need to source it from your bash shell . ~/nvm/nvm.sh I always add this line to my ~/.bashrc or ~/.profile file to have it automatically sources upon login. Often I also put in a line to use a specific version of node. So which file should I add this to? I am guessing profile since it's ubuntu?? Also, where in the file do I add this line? After I have added this line, do I need to reboot or anything? Any help would be deeply appreciated--especially if you can show me an example profile file with . ~/nvm/nvm.sh integrated so that I can see usage. Thanks, Matt

• Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". Asus k53s

  I had everything working fine, I use a number of openGL graphics software, example pymol, mgltools, vmd, ballview, rasmol etc. All of these give the error: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". and fail to initialize. I have an i7 asus k53s with nvidia gforce I need these to do my work. I tried the umblebee fix, and just removing all nvidia drivers, or rolling back. I do not know why these were working then stopped, but did notice a new nvidia console in the mu which I assume was from enabling the automatic nvidia feeds, etc? I also played with the xorg, however have no clue what settings are valid. In addition, the display is 50% of the time not recognized now? It just gives a geeic 640x480 and I have to login and out 10 times to get it to return to a normal setting. When I try and set it manual, there is no other setting allowed from the settings menus, and the terminal changes just get re set every time I log out?

  I'm trying to design a simple conversion framework based on these requirements: All developers should follow a predefined set of rules to convert from the source entity to the target entity Some overall policies should be able to be applied in a central place, without interference with developers' code Both the creation of converters and usage of converter classes should be easy To solve these problems in C# language, A thought came to my mind. I'm writing it here, though it doesn't compile at all. But let's assume that C# compiles this code: I'll create a generic interface called IConverter public interface IConverter<TSource, TTarget> where TSource : class, new() where TTarget : class, new() { TTarget Convert(TSource source); List<TTarget> Convert(List<TSource> sourceItems); } Developers would implement this interface to create converters. For example: public class PhoneToCommunicationChannelConverter : IConverter<Phone, CommunicationChannle> { public CommunicationChannel Convert(Phone phone) { // conversion logic } public List<CommunicationChannel> Convert(List<Phone> phones) { // conversion logic } } And to make the usage of this conversion class easier, imagine that we add static and this keywords to methods to turn them into Extension Methods, and use them this way: List<Phone> phones = GetPhones(); List<CommunicationChannel> channels = phones.Convert(); However, this doesn't even compile. With those requirements, I can think of some other designs, but they each lack an aspect. Either the implementation would become more difficult or chaotic and out of control, or the usage would become truly hard. Is this design right at all? What alternatives I might have to achieve those requirements?

• What's the use of Ant's extension-point if/unless attributes?

  When you define an extension-point in an Ant build file you can have it conditional by using the if or unless attribute. On a target the if/unless prevent it's tasks from being run. But an extension-point doesn't have any tasks to conditionally run, so what does the condition do? My thought (which proved to be incorrect in Ant 1.8.0) is it would prevent any tasks that extend the extension-point from being run. Since an extention-point doesn't have any tasks exactly what has been skipped? Any targets that depend on the extention-point still get executed since a skipped target is a successful target. What is the value of the if/unless attributes on an extention-point?

• How to share data between SSRS Security and Data Processing extension?

  I've spent a lot of time trying to solve the issue pointed in title and have no found a solution yet. I use MS SSRS 2012 with custom Security (based on Form Authentication and ClaimsPrincipal) and Data Processing extensions. In Data extension level I need to apply filter programmatically based on one of the claim which I have access in Security extension level only. Here is the problem: I do know how to pass the claim from Security to Data Processing extension code... What I've tried: IAuthenticationExtension.LogonUser(string userName, string password, string authority) { ... ClaimsPrincipal claimsPrincipal = CreateClaimsPrincipal(...); Thread.CurrentPrincipal = claimsPrincipal; HttpContext.Current.User = claimsPrincipal; ... }; But it doesn't work. It seems SSRS overrides it within either GenericPrincipal or FormsIdentity internally. The possible workaround I'm thinking about (but haven't checked it yet): 1. Create HttpModule which will create HttpContext with all required information (minus: will be invoke getting claims each time - huge operation) 2. Write to custom SQL table to store logged users information which is required for Data extension and then read it 3. try somehow to append to cookies due to LogOn and then read each time on IAuthenticationExtension.GetUserInfo and fill HttpContext None of them seems to be a good solution. I would be grateful for any help/advise/comments.

• MSCC: Scripting - Administrator's­ toolbox of magic...

  Finally, we made it to have our April meetup - in May. The most obvious explanation is the increased amount of open source and IT activities that either the MSCC, the Linux User Group of Mauritius (LUGM), or the University of Mauritius Student's Computer Club is organising. It's absolutely incredible to see the recent hype of events here on the island. And I'm loving it! Unfortunately, we also had to deal with arranging for a location this time. It was kind of an odyssey as my requests (and phone calls) haven't been answered, even though I tried it several times - well, kind of disappointing and I have to look into that for future gatherings. In my opinion, it is essential that two parameters of a community meeting are fixed as early as possible: Location, and Date and time You can't just change one or both on the very last minute. Well, this time we had to do it due to unforeseen reasons, and I apologise to any MSCC member which couldn't make it to our April meetup. Okay, lesson learned but now back to the actual meetup report ... Shortly after the meeting I placed the following statement as my first impression: "Spontaneous and improvised :) No, seriously, Ish and Dan had well prepared presentations on shell scripting, mainly focused towards Bourne Again Shell (bash), and the pros and cons of scripting versus actually writing something in a decent programming language. I thought that I could cut myself out of the equation but the demand for information about PowerShell was higher than expected..." Well, it turned out that the interest in Windows PowerShell was high, as I even got a couple of questions on it via social media networks during the evening. I also like to mention that the number of attendees went back to what I would call a "standard" number of participation. This time there were 12 craftsmen, but again a good number of First Timers. Reactions of other attendees Here are some impressions and feedback from our participants: "Enjoyed the bash and powershell (linux / windows) presentations ..." -- Nadim on event comments "He [Daniel] also showed us some syntax loopholes in Bash that could leave someone with bad code." -- Ish on MSCC – Let's talk about Scripting   Glad to see a couple of first time attendees, especially students from the university itself. Some details on the presentations MSCC: First time visit at the University of Mauritius - Phase II Engineering Tower, room 2.9 Gimme some love ... bash and other shells Ish gave a great introduction into shell scripting as he spoke about existing shell environments and a little bit about their history. Furthermore, he talked about various built-in commands, the use of coreutils, the ability to daisy-chain multiple commands using pipes, the importance of the standard I/O streams and their file descriptors in advanced scripting techniques. Combined with a couple of sample statements in the Linux terminal on Ubuntu 14.04 machine it was a solid presentation. Have a closer look at his slides - published on his blog on MSCC – Let's talk about Scripting. Oddities of scripting After the brief introduction into bash it was Daniel's turn to highlight a good number of oddities when working with shell scripts. First of all, it should be clear that scripting is not supposed for any kind of implementations in terms of software but simply to automate administrative procedures and to simplify routine jobs on a system. One of the cool oddities that he mentioned is that everything (!) in a shell is represented by strings; there are no other types like integer, float, date-time, etc. that you'd like to use in a full-fledged programming language. Let's have a look at his sample:  more to come... What's the output? As a conclusion, Daniel suggests that shell scripting should be limited but not restricted to automatic repetitive command stacks and batch jobs, startup wrapper for applications in order to set up the execution environment, and other not too sophisticated jobs. But as soon as it might involve a little bit more logic or you might rely on performance it's better to write an application in Ruby, Python, or Perl (among others of course). This is also enables the possibility to test your code properly. MSCC: Ish talking about Bourne Again Shell (bash) and shell scripting to automate regular tasks MSCC: Daniel gives an overview about the pros and cons of shell scripting versus programming MSCC: PowerShell as your scripting solution on Windows operating systems The path of the Enlightened is long ... and tough. Honestly, even though PowerShell was mentioned without any further details on the meetup's agenda, I didn't expect that there would be demand to give a presentation on Microsoft PowerShell after all. I already took this topic out of the announcement but the audience wanted to have some information. Okay, then let's see what I could do - improvised style. While my machine booted and got hooked up to the projector, I started to talk about the beginnings of PowerShell from back in 2006, and its predecessors MS DOS and Command Prompt. A throwback in history... always good for young people. As usual, Microsoft didn't get it at that time. Instead of listening to their client's needs and demands they ignored the feasibility to administrate Windows server farms without any UI tools. PowerShell is actually a result of this, and seeing that shell scripting is a common, reliable and fast way in an administrator's toolbox for decades, Microsoft had to adapt from their Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to a broader approach. It's not like shell scripting was something new; it is in daily use by alternative operating systems like AIX, HP UX, Solaris, and last but not least Linux. Most interestingly, Microsoft is very good at renovating existing architectures, and over the years PowerShell not only replaced their own combination of Command Prompt and Scripting Hosts (VBScript and CScript) but really turned into a challenging competitor on the market. The shell is easy to extend with cmdlets, and open to other Microsoft products like SQL Server, SharePoint, as well as Third-party software applications. Similar to MMC PowerShell also offers the ability to administer other machine remotely - only without a graphical user interface and therefore it's easier to automate and schedule regular tasks. • Customizing Spaces UI

  In most common scenarios we stumble up on use cases to customize the Web center spaces UI. Is the Spaces UI customizable? What is the extent to which we can customize? How do i customize it? These are some questions that developers/architects normally come across. Well to clear the air, OOTB spaces comes with some default "site templates" and it also gives a flexibility to create custom site templates suiting the organization needs. The site templates concept has been introduced in the latest PS1 release of webcenter and to customize/create the the new site template, we have to leverage the Extend Spaces Project available on OTN. You could download the the project from here. Also there is white paper available on what all can be customized/extended from spaces perspective listed here . There is a specific details outlined on how to create custom site template in the Customizing Site Template white paper. One of the things the white paper high lights is "While you can create new site templates and modify the sample site templates but you cannot modify either of the out-of-the-box site templates ie the default and maximized. So if my need is to either increase the size of header to fit in a bigger logo or introduce couple of extra links on the default/maximized lay out how do i achieve this? All you need to do is customize the OOTB shell (shell-config.xml). 1. Copy the shell config's available in the Source Files Directory of the extended spaces unzipped directory into the CustomSite Template Project ExtendWebCenterSpaces\CustomSiteTemplate\custom\oracle\webcenter\webcenterapp\metadata\shell 2. Modify the appropriate shell 3. Deploy the CustomSite Template as ADF Jar 4. ensure you have the profile dependency on the aboproject int he custom webcenter spaces project 5. Deploy the Spaces Extension on the Webcenter Spaces Instance. (Details in the first white paper). You should see the changes immediately. eg: In the default shell, i have changed the height from 30 to 60 to increase the header size height="60" This is what i get to see : If you have worked on the R1 release time frame, where you created a custom shell/chrome, how do we make them compatible and make it available in the Spaces PS1 instance? All you need to do is the following: 1. Copy the custom shell in to the shell directory of the custom site template project 2. Register the shell with WCSiteTemplates.xml available in the same project. Eg : Yo can add the below entry pagePath="/oracle/webcenter/webcenterapp/view/templates/MyShellTemplate.jspx" pageDefPath="/oracle/webcenter/webcenterapp/bindings/pageDefs/oracle_webcenter_webcenterapp_view_templates_WebCenterAppShellTemplatePageDef.xml" displayName="myShell" chromeLevel="myShell"/ Note : pagePath - Absolute path of the template JSPX file. This path must be unique. So you might have to do the following to get your custom chrome working absolutely fine with no problems at all: 1. Create a jspx page, say /custom/mysite/SiteTemplate.jspx 2. Include the the default jspx in the new site template like following SiteTemplate.jspx ------------------ 3. Add the newly created site template in the WCSiteTemplate.xml file like following - pagePath="/custom/mysite/SiteTemplate.jspx" pageDefPath="/oracle/webcenter/webcenterapp/bindings/pageDefs/oracle_webcenter_webcenterapp_view_templates_WebCenterAppShellTemplatePageDef.xml" displayName="myShell" chromeLevel="myShell"/

• While in CMD shell, copying files from host OS to guest VM locks files (VMware Player/Workstation)

  We're running the latest versions of VMWare Player and Workstation for Windows. The following behavior is identical across both products. Problem: We open a CMD prompt in our guest OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7) and copy files from our host OS using the standard CMD shell copy command: copy z:\C$\testfiles The copy completes successfully, but from that point forward, all the files that were copied to our guest OS are now LOCKED on our host OS. This does not happen if we use Windows Explorer to copy files - it only happens when files are copied via the CMD shell. As mentioned at the start of this question, this behavior is reproducible in both VMWare Player and VMWare Workstation across multiple machines and multiple guest OS's. I've googled for a workaround, but without success. Any ideas appreciated. Malcolm

• How to associate the ".exe" extension to be opened with Mono?

  I want to asssociate the .exe file extension to Mono (don't care about wine). Apparently, when using Finder's GUI, only .app files (application bundles) can be selected. But the Mono executable (/Libraries/Frameworks/Mono.Framework/Current/bin/mono) is no such bundle. I tried some AppleScript on run this_file do shell script "mono this_file &" end run but Finder's GUI still doesn't allow to associate that with .exe's. How to associate a specific file extension to a command-line application in Mac OS X?

• Why does the EFI shell not detect my Windows DVD?

  I'm currently looking into (U)EFI for the first time and am already really confused. I insert the Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise disc into the DVD-ROM and boot into the EFI shell. The shell will automatically list all detected devices, which are: blk0 :CDRom - Alias (null) Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F|2)/Ata(Primary,Master)/CDROM(Entry0) blk1 :BlockDevice - Alias (null) Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F|2)/Ata(Primary,Master) To my understanding, it should have already detected the filesystem on blk0 and should have mounted it as fs0. Why is that not happening? If I insert a USB drive, it gets mounted just fine. The board is an Intel S5520HC in case that makes a difference.

• How can I install a custom (patched) PECL extension?

  I'm trying to use the htscanner PECL extension on my CentOS 5/PHP 5.2.6 machine, but there's a bug in the latest version where a newline character is added to the end of every php_value directive. This behavior causes my include_path and error_log values not to work. The bug and the patch are documented on the PECL site: http://pecl.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=16891 I've downloaded the latest version, applied the patch, and re-compressed the package — but I can't get the PECL installer to accept it — or any local package, for that matter. I've tried every variation of the pecl install syntax that I can think of, and the only times I'm able to get it to work, it downloads an online copy first and ignores the local copy. Can anyone recommend a method for installing a PECL extension from a local file? Thanks for your consideration.

  I'd like to be able to use a ssh key for authentication, but still restrict the commands that can be executed over the ssh tunnel. With Subversion, I've achieved this by using a .ssh/authorized_keys file like: command="/usr/local/bin/svnserve -t --tunnel-user matt -r /path/to/repository",no-port-forwarding,no-agent-forwarding,no-X11-forwarding,no-pty ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAABIetc... I've tried this with "/usr/bin/git-shell" in the command, but I just get the funky old fatal: What do you think I am? A shell? error message.

  Hi, I have some server running qmail, with many users/domains configured via plesk. I would like to get emails from specified address delivered to one of my users being feed to shell command, as addition to normal delivery. So, basically, I have some shell script, and I'd like qmail to invoke my script with the email, and the continued with delivery as usual. If necessary, I can do recipient/sender filterind on script side, though it could be more efficient and cleaner, if qmail would feed only correct emails to my script. Anyway, how to accomplish that?

• How to run statically linked programs on a shell account?

  I have a shell account where I am not allowed to compile anything. There are however tools I need to run, some very simple ones like Midnight Commander, mcedit, most, jed I am trying to find a staically linked version that "just works" in my shell. Could anyone give me any advice on where I could find statically builds? I have not been able to find it with google. I could compile it myself, but I would have to find out which headers I need to compile for. I have never tried to do it before, so any help would be greatly apprechiated!
