• Repair GRUB bootloader for multiboot system

  I have two hard disks – one a 1TB and the other a 250 GB. I installed the OSes in the following order: Windows 7 on the first hard disk (1 TB) After that Kubuntu 12.04 on a partition (/dev/sdb7) on the second hard disk (250 GB) The second drive also contains an NTFS partition. Now, kubuntu's bootloader was installed on the second hard drive's MBR (and successfully detected Windows 7). So, whenever I wanted to load Windows I used to select the first hard disk from the BIOS boot menu and the second hard disk whenever I wanted to load kubuntu. I know I could have set the second hard disk as the default drive, still I prefered this method. The problem started when I installed Linux Mint 13 on the second hard disk (/dev/sdb3) and overwrote kubuntu's original MBR. Now, the GRUB just detects Mint and Windows. The MBR on the 1 TB hard disk is untouched. Is there a way I can modify the MBR on the second hard disk now so that it will show kubuntu and Mint both?

• Cannot connect on TFS 2012 server through SSL with invalid certificate

  I saw the problem on some forums and even here, but not as specific as mine. So here's the thing, So I've configured a TFS 2012 server, on one of my personnel server at home, and now, I'm trying to make it available through the internet, with the help of apache2 on a different UNIX based, physical server. The thing is working perfectly, I don't have any problem accessing the address https://tfs.something.com/tfs through my browser. The address can be pinged and I do have access to the TFS control panel through it. How does it work? Well, with apache2 you can set a virtual host and set up the ProxyPass and ProxyPassReserver setting, so the traffic can externally comes from a secure SSL connection, through a specified domain or sub-domain, but it can be locally redirect on a clear http session on a different port. This is my current setup. As I already said, I can access the web interface, but when I'm trying to connect with Visual Studio 2012, it can't be done. Here's the error I receive: http://i.imgur.com/TLQIn.png The technical information tells me: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. My SSL certificate is invalid and was automatically generated on my UNIX server. Even if I try to add it in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities either on my TFS server or on my local workstation, it doesn't work. I still receive the same error. Is there's a way to completely ignore certificate validation? If not, what's have I done? I mean, I've added the certificate in the trusted root certificates, it should works as mentioned on some forums... If you need more information, please ask me, I'll be pleased to provide you more. • Getting Grub2 to recognize a Raid 10 boot/root

  I've been trying to get my raid to boot from grub2 for about 2 days now and I don't seem to be getting closer. The problem appears to be that it doesn't recognize my raid at all. It doesn't see (md0) etc. I'm not sure Why or how to change this. I'm using mdadm, 2 device (essentially a raid1) raid10,f2, which is currently degraded. I have tried adding the raid and mdraid modules with grub install along with others. I've tried several variation on grub-install such as grub-install --debug --no-floppy --modules="biosdisk part_msdos chain raid mdraid ext2 linux search ata normal" /dev/md0 I've been searching the net for an answer to what I haven't done but no luck. On my other drive which I plan on removing the raid is initialized and mounted fine on boot, but it's not the boot/root for that setup. My grub.cfg isn't recognized by grub since it can't read the raid partition so I'm not posting that. md0 is not listed in my /boot/grub/device.map.

• Apache (Solaris 10): 2 symlinks to the same file, one works the other doesn't

  I'm seeing a strange issue with Apache I have a system that pulls a configuration file from a web server. I want to use a symlink with the name 'ocds-dpsarch01a.rules'. This doesn't work. However, if I change one character in that name and link it to the same file, it works - See below I can't think of any reason why one symlink would work when another doesn't? I would have thought either the Apache configuration is right and all symlinks work, or it isn't and no syslinks work(?) • Magic Mouse problems dragging and dropping files in finder (Mac OSX 10.6.3)

  I have an issue dragging files around in the finder with my Magic Mouse. For example, I was trying to select and drag multiple files from the desktop onto an external hard drive. However, whenever I do so, the files either end up deselected (and the move doesn't happen). If I try to drag a single file, finder ends up doing whatever it does to enable the file to be renamed. Reverting back to the touchpad works fine. Is there a problem with drag-and-drop with this mouse, or is there a setting that I am missing (I've scoured the settings, and nothing is jumping out at me). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  Does anyone have some tips on compiling PHP's intl extension on PHP? I'm getting compile errors each way I try it and I've been googling for ages and getting nowhere. Any help greatly appreciated.   I have few DVD-RAM disks and when using udftools, specifically sudo mkudffs --media-type=dvdram /dev/sr0 where /dev/sr0 is my DVD-RAM drive, I get trying to change type of multiple extents and nothing happens. What should I do? • Is it possible to mount a hot-swappable drive when it is turned on?

  In my PC, I have a hot-swap drive. Usually I keep it off to save power. I only really use it when accessing from another PC on the network. Is it possible to configure /etc/fstab to mount this drive when I turn it on (without having to shake the mouse, open file manager and click the drive to have it mounted? Currently, I have: UUID=a869e5ca-7d3b-4d64-91e2-eadbecd8c9e5 /media/i-TVShows ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,auto,user,uhelper=udisks 0 0 in my /etc/fstab file but it doesn't seem to do the trick. I want the drive to be user-mountable, on power on, with RW access, and I'm thinking of adding 'nofail'...this is my first time writing to the fstab file, and a lot of the parameters I took from the output of 'mount' so feel free to correct any oddness you find.   What do I need to do to get MKV HD videos playing with VDPAU and also Blu-ray discs? Lots of people say you need to compile the latest MPlayer (which I haven't had luck doing) for VDPAU. I found an mplayer ppa that says it has VDPAU compiled into it so I'd like to use that. What packages do I need for playing MKV files and Blu-ray with the video decoding offloaded to my GPU? So far I haven't had any luck with any of the tutorials I've found. I'm just looking for a quick synopsis that will tell me what I'm looking for as I'm kind of shooting in the dark. (I didn't know what VDPAU was until a few days ago.)

• named-checkzone reports 'ns.example.com.ns' has no address records (A or AAAA)

  The first thing I see wrong is that its a recursion problem. But I'm not sure where the problems lie in my reverse lookup file. ns should report back as ns.example.com but instead getting ns.example.com.ns. Of course it wouldn't find any entries for that name because there isn't one, nor is it supposed to. Here's my reverse file: $TTL 86400 @ IN SOA ns.example.com root.example.com. ( 16071990 ; Serial 3600 ; Refresh 1800 ; Retry 604800 ; Expire 86400 ; Minimum TTL ) @ IN NS ns.example.com It's not extraordinarily complicated. What my question is, what other files affect the output for named-checkzone when checking a name against the revers file?

• Linux: find thin server running on port 80 and kill it

  On my Linux server I ran: sudo thin start -p 80 -d Now I'd like to restart the sever. The trouble is, I can't seem to get the old process to kill it. I tried: netstat -anp But what I see on port 80 is this: Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - So, it didn't give me a PID to kill... I tried pgrep -l thin but that gave me nothing. Meanwhile pgrep -l ruby gives me like 6 processes running. I don't really understand why multiple ruby threads would be running, or which one I need to kill... How do I kill / restart the thin daemon?

• Windows Live Mail treating my Firefox as mobile device

  I started using Namoroka (firefox 3.6 nighly) yesterday and since then, windows live mail has been treating it like a mobile device. Same thing happens when I try with Minefield (firefox 4 nightly). I've tried loading the default page in Chromium and then pasting the URL to firefox. The sign in page shows alright then, but as soon as I sign in, the mobile inbox shows up again. I've tried clearing the cache+history+cookies everything but nothing's working. Anyone know of a solution?

• how to lower CPU usage for Ableton Live 8 in Mac OSX 10.6.8

  While running Ableton Live 8 after a project gets to a certain size, the audio starts to get a bit choppy and distorted. My levels are fine and is not the cause of the lag and chop. I have samples set to 1024 and the high quality button selected which I need to hear the sound. I always lower these when I'm recording audio with my mic but I need to have these turned up to be able to mix master the song. Anything I can do to lower the CPU usage? It sucks because I can't even use my iZotope Ozone plug-ins because of their CPU usage and they are AMAZING plug-ins that I would love to use.

  When I send an email and I get a response, more often than not, in the To: is my email address. However, my email address also ends up in the From: column.The reply-from address is nowhere to be found;so I don't have any address with which I can send my reply, as both of them have just my email address. What am I doing wrong here? Is there some set-up in my Tools Options which is incorrect? The set-up in Options is pretty difficult to understand and it doesn't offer any to or reply-from choices. This is critical because I just cannot answer my emails because there is no one I can send a reply to.

  If I list df output for KB, MB and GB, they do not match e.g. $ df -k |grep xvdb /dev/xvdb1 12796048 732812 11413172 7% /xxx $ df -m |grep xvdb /dev/xvdb1 12497 716 11146 7% /xxx $ df -h |grep xvdb /dev/xvdb1 13G 716M 11G 7% /xxx 12796048 KB = 12496.14 MB so that is slight off but OK 12796048 KB = 12.2 GB, 12407 MB is also 12.2 GB so why df is showing 13 GB or am I missing something? • Active directory integration not working properly with winbind and samba

  I'm trying to get my linux box to use active directory authentication. I believe I have almost everything setup correctly. I'm able to issue wbinfo -g and wbinfo -u and see all the groups and users respectively. Brief intro to my setup: The username I use on my linux box to do admin things is nick. My active directory username is nwalke. They have two different passwords. I am able to log in to the box with nick and that user's password and I'm also able to login as nwalke with nwalke's password. The curious bit: Upon creating the active directory user's home directory, I run a script that requires root access. This is to setup some system wide things like a samba share for them. When I log in as nwalke, I enter my nwalke password and it succeeds. I'm then greeted with [sudo] password for nick:. If I enter my nwalke password here, it says Sorry, try again.. If I enter nick's password, it says Sorry, user nick is not allowed to execute scriptname as root. If I do groups as nwalke, I see that magically my user has been given the group nick. Now, I accidentally thought that nick had a UID of 100, not 1000. So originally in my smb.conf I had idmap uid 1000-10000. The only thing I can think of, is that I logged in with nwalke while that was still set and now I'm just being presented with a UID of 1000 forcing linux to think I'm nick. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Like I said, I'm fairly certain active directory is communicating with my server properly, but something must not be mapped right on the linux side. Any thoughts?   I have for a long time used KeyRemap4MacBook in Snow Leopard. I have always stayed on top of OS update. Today, suddenly my CapsLock no longer was remapped to Control, but it was just a regular CapsLock. So I went into the settings for KeyRemap4MacBook and noticed that CapsLock could no longer be set. Instead it gave a link to PCKeyboardHack. So I downloaded that and tried to use it. But when I try to select the Control key to remap to, it just becomes some kind erratic delete key or something. Definitely not a Control key.

  I'm trying to limit the memory usage of firefox to prevent it from stalling the whole system with problematic web sites. I tried, in bash: (ulimit -d 1000; firefox) & This should limit the memory usage to 1000kB. Then I opened YouTube, and noticed, in top, that firefox is using 2.6% of the memory, or about 200MB, and not crashing. Clearly the limit is being ignored. Why is that, and how can I enforce it correctly?
