• I have Oracle SQL Developer Installed, Now What?

  If you’re here because you downloaded a copy of Oracle SQL Developer and now you need help connecting to a database, then you’re in the right place. I’ll show you what you need to get up and going so you can finish your homework, teach yourself Oracle database, or get ready for that job interview. You’ll need about 30 minutes to set everything up…and about 5 years to become proficient with Oracle Oracle Database come with SQL Developer but SQL Developer doesn’t include a database If you install Oracle database, it includes a copy of SQL Developer. If you’re running that copy of SQL Developer, please take a second to upgrade now, as it is WAY out of date. But I’m here to talk to the folks that have downloaded SQL Developer and want to know what to do next. You’ve got it running. You see this ‘Connection’ dialog, and… Where am I connecting to, and who as? You NEED a database Installing SQL Developer does not give you a database. So you’re going to need to install Oracle and create a database, or connect to a database that is already up and running somewhere. Basically you need to know the following: where is this database, what’s it called, and what port is the listener running on? The Default Connection properties in SQL Developer These default settings CAN work, but ONLY if you have installed Oracle Database Express Edition (XE). Localhost is a network alias for 127.0.0.1 which is an IP address that maps to the ‘local’ machine, or the machine you are reading this blog post on. The listener is a service that runs on the server and handles connections for the databases on that machine. You can run a database without a listener and you can run a listener without a database, but you can’t connect to a database on a different server unless both that database and listener are up and running. Each listener ‘listens’ on one or more ports, you need to know the port number for each connection. The default port is 1521, but 1522 is often pretty common. I know all of this sounds very complicated Oracle is a very sophisticated piece of software. It’s not analogous to downloading a mobile phone app and and using it 10 seconds later. It’s not like installing Office/Access either – it requires services, environment setup, kernel tweaks, etc. However. Normally an administrator will setup and install Oracle, create the database, and configure the listener for everyone else to use. They’ll often also setup the connection details for everyone via a ‘TNSNAMES.ORA’ file. This file contains a list of database connection details for folks to browse – kind of like an Oracle database phoneboook. If someone has given you a TNSNAMES.ORA file, or setup your machine to have access to a TNSNAMES file, then you can just switch to the ‘TNS’ connection type, and use the dropdown to select the database you want to connect to. Then you don’t have to worry about the server names, database names, and the port numbers. ORCL – that sounds promising! ORCL is the default SID when creating a new database with the Database Creation Assistant (DBCA). It’s just me, and I need help! No administrator, no database, no nothing. What do you do? You have a few options: Buy a copy of Oracle and download, install, and create a database Download and install XE (FREE!) Download, import, and run our Developer Days Hands-on-Lab (FREE!) If you’re a student (or anyone else) with little to no experience with Oracle, then I recommend the third option. Oracle Technology Network Developer Day: Hands-on Database Application Development Lab The OTN lab runs on a A Virtual Box image which contains: 11gR2 Enterprise Edition copy of Oracle a database and listener running for you to connect to lots of demo data for you to play with SQL Developer installed and ready to connect Some browser based labs you can step through to learn Oracle You download the image, you download and install Virtual Box (also FREE!), then you IMPORT the image you previously downloaded. You then ‘Start’ the image. It will boot a copy of Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL), start your database, and all that jazz. You can then start up and run SQL Developer inside the image OR you can connect to the database running on the image using the copy of SQL Developer you installed on your host machine. Setup Port Forwarding to Make It Easy to Connect From Your Host When you start the image, it will be assigned an IP address. Depending on what network adapter you select in the image preferences, you may get something that can get out to the internet from your image, something your host machine can see and connect to, or something that kind of just lives out there in a vacuum. You want to avoid the ‘vacuum’ option – unless you’re OK with running SQL Developer inside the Linux image. Open the Virtual Box image properties and go to the Networking options. We’re going to setup port forwarding. This will tell your machine that anything that happens on port 1521 (the default Oracle Listener port), should just go to the image’s port 1521. So I can connect to ‘localhost’ and it will magically get transferred to the image that is running. Oracle Virtual Box Port Forwarding 1521 listener database Now You Just Need a Username and Password The default passwords on this image are all ‘oracle’ – so you can connect as SYS, HR, or whatever – just use ‘oracle’ as the password. The Linux passowrds are all ‘oracle’ too, so you can login as ‘root’ or as ‘oracle’ in the Linux desktop. Connect! Connect as HR to your Oracle database running on the OTN Developer Days Virtual Box image If you’re connecting to someone else’s database, you need to ask the person that manages that environment to create for you an account. Don’t try to ‘guess’ or ‘figure out’ what the username and password is. Introduce yourself, explain your situation, and ask kindly for access. This is your first test – can you connect? I know it’s hard to get started with Oracle. There are however many things we offer to make this easier. You’ll need to do a bit of RTM first though. • Monitor System Resources from the Windows 7 Taskbar

  The problem with most system monitoring apps is that they get covered up with all of your open windows, but you can solve that problem by adding monitoring apps to the Taskbar. Setting Up & Using SuperbarMonitor All of the individual monitors and the .dll files necessary to run them come in a single zip file for your convenience. Simply unzip the contents, add them to an appropriate “Program Files Folder”, and create shortcuts for the monitors that you would like to use on your system. For our example we created shortcuts for all five monitors and set the shortcuts up in their own “Start Menu Folder”. You can see what the five monitors (Battery, CPU, Disk, Memory, & Volume) look like when running…they are visual in appearance without text to clutter up the looks. The monitors use colors (red, green, & yellow) to indicate the amount of resources being used for a particular category. Note: Our system is desktop-based but the “Battery Monitor” was shown for the purposes of demonstration…thus the red color seen here. Hovering the mouse over the “Battery, CPU, Disk, & Memory Monitors” on our system displayed a small blank thumbnail. Note: The “Battery Monitor” may or may not display more when used on your laptop. Going one step further and hovering the mouse over the thumbnails displayed a small blank window. There really is nothing that you will need to worry with outside of watching the color for each individual monitor. Nice and simple! The one monitor with extra features on the thumbnail was the “Volume Monitor”. You can turn the volume down, up, on, or off from here…definitely useful if you have been wanting to hide the “Volume Icon” in the “System Tray”. You can also pin the monitors to your “Taskbar” if desired. Keep in mind that if you do close any of the monitors they will “temporarily” disappear from the “Taskbar” until the next time they are started. Note: If you want the monitors to start with your system each time you will need to add the appropriate shortcuts to the “Startup Sub-menu” in your “Start Menu”. Conclusion If you have been wanting a nice visual way to monitor your system’s resources then SuperbarMonitor is definitely worth trying out. • How To Replace Notepad in Windows 7

  It used to be that Notepad was a necessary evil because it started up quickly and let us catch a quick glimpse of plain text files. Now, there are a bevy of capable Notepad replacements that are just as fast, but also have great feature sets. Before following the rest of this how-to, ensure that you’re logged into an account with Administrator access. Note: The following instructions involve modifying some Windows system folders. Don’t mess anything up while you’re in there! If you follow our instructions closely, you’ll be fine. Choose your replacement There are a ton of great Notepad replacements, including Notepad2, Metapad, and Notepad++. The best one for you will depend on what types of text files you open and what you do with them. We’re going to use Notepad++ in this how-to. The first step is to find the executable file that you’ll replace Notepad with. Usually this will be the only file with the .exe file extension in the folder where you installed your text editor. Copy the executable file to your desktop and try to open it, to make sure that it works when opened from a different folder. In the Notepad++ case, a special little .exe file is available for the explicit purpose of replacing Notepad.If we run it from the desktop, it opens up Notepad++ in all its glory. Back up Notepad You will probably never go back once you switch, but you never know. You can backup Notepad to a special location if you’d like, but we find it’s easiest to just keep a backed up copy of Notepad in the folders it was originally located. In Windows 7, Notepad resides in: C:\Windows C:\Windows\System32 C:\Windows\SysWOW64 in 64-bit versions only Navigate to each of those directories and copy Notepad. Paste it into the same folder. If prompted, choose to Copy, but keep both files. You can keep your backup as “notepad (2).exe”, but we prefer to rename it to “notepad.exe.bak”. Do this for all of the folders that have Notepad (2 total for 32-bit Windows 7, 3 total for 64-bit). Take control of Notepad and delete it Even if you’re on an administrator account, you can’t just delete Notepad – Microsoft has made some security gains in this respect. Fortunately for us, it’s still possible to take control of a file and delete it without resorting to nasty hacks like disabling UAC. Navigate to one of the directories that contain Notepad. Right-click on it and select Properties.   Switch to the Security tab, then click on the Advanced button. Note that the owner of the file is a user called “TrustedInstaller”. You can’t do much with files owned by TrustedInstaller, so let’s take control of it. Click the Edit… button. Select the desired owner (you could choose your own account, but we’re going to give any Administrator control) and click OK. You’ll get a message that you need to close and reopen the Properties windows to edit permissions. Before doing that, confirm that the owner has changed to what you selected. Click OK, then OK again to close the Properties window. Right-click on Notepad and click on Properties again. Switch to the Security tab. Click on Edit…. Select the appropriate group or user name in the list at the top, then add a checkmark in the checkbox beside Full control in the Allow column. Click OK, then Yes to the dialog box that pops up. Click OK again to close the Properties window. Now you can delete Notepad, by either selecting it and pressing Delete on the keyboard, or right-click on it and click Delete.   You’re now free from Notepad’s foul clutches! Repeat this procedure for the remaining folders (or folder, on 32-bit Windows 7). Drop in your replacement Copy your Notepad replacement’s executable, which should still be on your desktop. Browse to the two or three folders listed above and copy your .exe to those locations. If prompted for Administrator permission, click Continue. If your executable file was named something other than “notepad.exe”, rename it to “notepad.exe”. Don’t be alarmed if the thumbnail still shows the old Notepad icon. Double click on Notepad and your replacement should open. To make doubly sure that it works, press Win+R to bring up the Run dialog box and enter “notepad” into the text field. Press enter or click OK. Now you can allow Windows to open files with Notepad by default with little to no shame! All without restarting or having to disable UAC! • Errors compiling XNA project Windows 8?

  I'm using Visual Studio 2012 have just installed Windows 8 on my computer and tried to compile a game Im working on in XNA. When the game tried to build, I got the following errors: Error 12 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\SkyDome\skycirrus01.xnb" because it was not found. Error 13 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\Fonts\Arial.xnb" because it was not found. Error 14 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\Fonts\ISOCP2.xnb" because it was not found. skycirrus01.xnb is actually a .fbx. *Arial.xmb* and ISOCP2.xmb are my spritefonts within my project. Prior to installing Windows 8 (store bought) my project compiled. Does anyone know how to convert these to .xnb files? I'm assuming that will make them compatible.

  On our website we have an HTML5 arcade. For each game it has an embed this game on your website copy + paste code box. We've done the approval process of games as strictly and safely as possible, we don't actually think it is possible to have any malicious code in the games. However, we are aware that there's a bunch of people out there smarter than us and they might be able to exploit it. For webmasters wanting to copy + paste our games on their websites, we want to warn them that they are doing it at their own risk - but could we be held responsible if say for instance a malicious game was hosted on an important website and it stole their users credentials and cause them damage? I'm wondering if having an HTML comment in the copy + paste code saying "Use at your own risk" is sufficient.

• When should a method of a class return the same instance after modifying itself?

  I have a class that has three methods A(), B() and C(). Those methods modify the own instance. While the methods have to return an instance when the instance is a separate copy (just as Clone()), I got a free choice to return void or the same instance (return this;) when modifying the same instance in the method and not returning any other value. When deciding for returning the same modified instance, I can do neat method chains like obj.A().B().C();. Would this be the only reason for doing so? Is it even okay to modify the own instance and return it, too? Or should it only return a copy and leave the original object as before? Because when returning the same modified instance the user would maybe admit the returned value is a copy, otherwise it would not be returned? If it's okay, what's the best way to clarify such things on the method?

   How to clone a VirtualBox DiskCopying the image of Virtual Disk (.vdi file) is a convenient way to duplicate the disk, in cases you want to avoid re-installing an operating system from scratch. However, simply copying the .vdi file into another location will make a verbatim copy of the virtual disk, including the UUID of the disk. That said, I've been able to build a site using the Internet Archive Book Reader, which relies on reader.js Here's a copy of one of my versions of reader.js https://gist.github.com/dylan-k/ed4efed2384e221d46cc It's a good site, but I find I have to repeat things a lot. Basically, I have one copy of reader.js for every page/book featured on the site. It seems there must be a better way. I re-use the script, making copies, just so that I can change lines 28, 80, 83, 84. Is there a way I could include just one copy of reader.js and then use a <script> tag to define these 4 lines for the individual pages?

• Permanently mounting Windows' NTFS partition, fully enabled

  I'm transforming a Windows 7 PC into a dual boot system with Ubuntu 10.10. Following other questions on this site, I've mounted my Windows drive by adding this to fstab UUID=blabla /windows ntfs users,defaults,umask=000 0 0 It appears to work well, I can read and write, but it appears to be a bit crippled still. When I tried to update an SVN working copy with RabbitVCS, it complained that it couldn't write to a temporary file inside the working copy, even though the permissions are all on 0777 inside /windows (by default, I haven't done that manually). It even corrupted that working copy :( It works when I use the command line SVN client with sudo, but that's hardly user friendly.

  I am trying to create a pure virtual base class (or simulated pure virtual) my goal: User can't create instances of BaseClass. Derived classes have to implement default constructor, copy constructor, copy assignment operator and destructor. My attempt: class Base { public: virtual ~Base() {}; /* some pure virtual functions */ private: Base() = default; Base(const Base& base) = default; Base& operator=(const Base& base) = default; } This gives some errors complaining that (for one) the copy constructor is private. But i don't want this mimicked constructor to be called. Can anyone give me the correct construction to do this if this is at all possible?

• Windows 7 Virtual PC - &ldquo;RPC server unavailable&rdquo;

  I use Windows 7 Virtual PC on my current project and I often bring home the files, so I can work some in the evenings.  Since my VHDs are large, I’ll only copy the undo disks, saved state, and virtual machine config files from my external drive.  I copy them to a small portable drive and once I get home, I’ll copy them to a large external drive. I’ve done this for over a year, but recently I started getting an error when I tried to start the VPC after the copying was finished.  It would open the initial window with the progress bar, but eventually the bar would stop, turn red, and then the error “RPC server unavailable” would appear.  When I first started seeing these, I’d try again, but no luck. After some testing, it turns out that my small portable drive is apparently going bad, so it was corrupting the files.  Lucky for me, that I never overwrote my good copies with corrupted copies, at least not at both the office and at home.

• UI Controls Copyright

  I'm developing a cross-platform computer software. It will run on Windows and Mac OS X. For user experience reasons, I want it to have the same graphic on both platforms. I really like the Mac OS UI controls and I'd love to see them on the Windows version too. My question is: is it legal to "copy" UI components? I'm not going to copy icons or reproduce an existing Apple software. I would only "copy" some standard UI components such as Buttons, Progressbars, TreeView, ListView etc. You can see them here: http://i.stack.imgur.com/9YzYQ.png http://i.stack.imgur.com/MWR6B.jpg IMHO, they should not be copyrighted for two reasons: They are implicitly used by any Mac OS software There are a lot of Apps (for Windows and even Web-Apps) that are "inspired by" the Mac graphic. • How to prevent code from leaking outside work?

  I'm working on an institution that has a really strong sense of "possession" - each line of software we write should be only ours. Ironically, I'm the only programmer (ATM), but we're planning in hiring others. Since my bosses wouldn't count the new programmers as people they can trust, they have an issue with the copies of the source code. We use Git, so they would have a entire copy of each of the projects they work on, when they clone the repository. We can restrict access to them to a single key with Gitolite and bind that to their PC's, but they can copy those keys to another computer and they would have the repository access in another PC. Also (and the most obvious method) they could just upload the files somewhere else, add another remote, or just copy the files to an USB drive. Is there any (perhaps clever) way to prevent events like these?

But in some cases I missed to copy the changes in the original framework code. How do you manage your frameworks? I copy the complete framework to a library folder in my projects folder structure.   Please advise how to handle following scenario in web application. I have a drop-down which is populated using meta-data from table A. When form is submitted this drop down data is stored in table B. While displaying existing data, it is populated using data stored in table B. While copying existing data, it is copied using data stored in table B. I want to achieve following goals: While displaying existing data I must display data irrespective of current meta data (to explain, even if some options are removed from metadata I still display them). When I copy existing data only current data should be copied(that is if some options are removed from metadata I should not copy them). I understand that I can do this by scanning metadata every time I copy existing data, however if there are thousands of such drop down exist, it is definitely not desirable to scan complete metadata for every drop down. How can I handle such situation in web application?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 with a kernal of 3.0.0-17-generic (#30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 17:34:21 UT When I tried to copy files to a San Disk Cruzer 8gb usb drive, the copy process went a short way and then completely stopped. Although I have copied items to the USB drive from my PC before, this time the files would start quickly enough but always stop shortly after starting. I figure the 8 gb was bad, so I went and got a brand new 32 gb usb drive from a store, unpackaged it and plugged it in, still unable to copy to the usb drive. So is there some kind of incompatibility or issue where San Disk Cruzer Glides are no longer supporting it. Is there an obscure setting that I am missing? Any help would be appreciated

  If you are getting a message when you start the Compute Emulator “Systray already running…” from within Visual Studio one fix is to check what the image name is loading is. For some reason, on 2 of my machines the image was loading with the 8.3 format.  This caused the logic in the VS tools to not find the process.  So, to fix, I just did a little copy/rename magic. C:\Program Files\Windows Azure SDK\v1.3\bin>copy csmonitor.exe csmonitor-a.exe 1 file(s) copied. C:\Program Files\Windows Azure SDK\v1.3\bin>del csmonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Azure SDK\v1.3\bin>copy csmonitor-a.exe csmonitor.exe 1 file(s) copied. If you bring up task manager and see something like CSMON~1.EXE in the Image Name column, you probably have this issue.

• Practical size limitations for RDBMS

  I am working on a project that must store very large datasets and associated reference data. I have never come across a project that required tables quite this large. I have proved that at least one development environment cannot cope at the database tier with the processing required by the complex queries against views that the application layer generates (views with multiple inner and outer joins, grouping, summing and averaging against tables with 90 million rows). The RDBMS that I have tested against is DB2 on AIX. The dev environment that failed was loaded with 1/20th of the volume that will be processed in production. I am assured that the production hardware is superior to the dev and staging hardware but I just don't believe that it will cope with the sheer volume of data and complexity of queries. Before the dev environment failed, it was taking in excess of 5 minutes to return a small dataset (several hundred rows) that was produced by a complex query (many joins, lots of grouping, summing and averaging) against the large tables. My gut feeling is that the db architecture must change so that the aggregations currently provided by the views are performed as part of an off-peak batch process. Now for my question. I am assured by people who claim to have experience of this sort of thing (which I do not) that my fears are unfounded. Are they? Can a modern RDBMS (SQL Server 2008, Oracle, DB2) cope with the volume and complexity I have described (given an appropriate amount of hardware) or are we in the realm of technologies like Google's BigTable? I'm hoping for answers from folks who have actually had to work with this sort of volume at a non-theoretical level.

  Hi, I have an sql scenario as follows which I have been trying to improve. There is a table 'Returns' which is having ids of the returned goods against a shop for an item. Its structure is as below. Returns ------------------------- Return ID | Shop | Item ------------------------- 1 Shop1 Item1 2 Shop1 Item1 3 Shop1 Item1 4 Shop1 Item1 5 Shop1 Item1 There is one more table Supplier with Shop, supplier and Item as shown below. Supplier --------------------------------- Supplier | Shop | Item | Volume --------------------------------- supp1 Shop1 Item1 20% supp2 Shop1 Item1 80% Now as you see supp1 is supplying 20 % of total item1 volume and supp2 is supplying 80% of Item1 to shop1. And there were 5 return of items against the same Item1 for same Shop1. Now I need to allocate any four return IDs to Supp1 and remaining one return Id to supp2. This allocation of numbers is based on the ratio of the supplied volume percentage of the supplier. This allocation varies depending on the ratio of volume of supplied items. Now I have tried a method of using RANKs as shown below by use of temp tables. temp table 1 will have Shop, Return Id, Item, Total count of return IDs and Rank of the return id. temp table 2 will have shop, Supplier, Item and his proportion and rank of proportion. Now I am facing the difficulty in allocating top return ids to top supplier as illustrated above. As SQL doesnt have loops how can I achieve this. I have been tying several ways of doing this. Please advice. My environment is Teradata (ANSI SQL is enough). Thanks in advance.
