  We have a large team of developers and testers. The ratio is one tester for every one developer. We have full bug tracking and reporting systems in place. We have test plans in place. Every change to the product, the testing team is involved in the design of the feature and are included in the development process as much as possible. We build in small iterative blocks, using scrum methodology and every scrum they are included in, including the grooming sessions etc. But every release of the product, they miss even the most simple and obvious defects. • Bad sound quality and headphones not working

  Using Ubuntu 10.10, on a HP Pavilion t3019.es, which has a Realtek ALC880 soundcard. It has 6 rear jack outputs, plus digital audio input and output, plus 3 front jacks (mic, headphones and a blue one which i don't know what's for). The sound on my computer is very low, and when i raise the volume up to 50%, it starts sounding distorted, crackling. Also, the headphones don't work when i plug them (it just keeps on playing through the speakers). I tried to comment the "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" file according to the soundcard and jacks in my computer, but none of the lines added worked (naturally, didn't added them at once). I found out that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to it made the sound better, but it's not as good as in Windows yet. Any ideas? Other than setting the PCM value, didn't work for me. • Shell script to fix bad filenames? [closed]

  I'm IT at my small firm; and, despite my dire warnings, everyone puts files on the server with awful names, including leading & trailing spaces, bad characters (including \ ; / + . < > - etc!) They do this by accessing the (FreeBSD/FreeNAS) server via AFP on Macs, so no part of the system complains. Is there a script I can use to go through an entire directory tree and fix bad filenames? Basically replace all spaces & bad ASCII with _ ... and if a file already exists, just slap a _2 or something on the end. I don't suppose there's a way to get the system to enforce good filenaming conventions, is there?

• Is this bad practice?

  I just wanted to ask for your opinion on a situation that occurs sometimes and which I don't know what would be the most elegant way to solve it. Here it goes: We have module A which reads an entry from a database and sends a request to module B containing ONLY the information from the entry module B would need to accomplish it's job (to keep modularity I just give it the information it needs - module B has nothing to do with the rest of the information from the read DB entry). Now after finishing it's job, module B has to reply to a module C if it succeeded or failed. To do this module B replies with the information it has gotten from module A and some variable meaning success or fail. Now here comes the problem: module C needs to find that entry again BUT the information it has gotten from module B is not enough to uniquely find the exact same entry again. I don't think that module A giving more information to module B which it doesn't need to do it's job but which it could then give back to module C would be a good practice because this would mean giving some module information it doesn't really need. What do you think?

  After my complete my College education I got chance to work on software programming. I work on few software and now nothing make me feel good. I don't like web-programming. Can't have too much mind to play with other people in team a designer or a senior. it's totally time wasting for me. We do integration without any source code control. copy through pen drive. I write in too many language for web-programming but know nothing about any language specially. I don't like to have a BOSS. I would like to do something on my own. From last 3 year I thing I will got a better job but I am unable to get it. I am not good at Programming nor my English is native. I have a big list for pay then my salary. I have problem with nothing. my atmosphere is about illiterate people. they abuse 24 hours a day. this thing make me sick. people watch CRIME patrol my home (watching rape in TV because it's happen to someone). I do my work from home. I don't like to live in my state. All state is one of the biggest illiterate state of my country. Once I apply for a Job in China and it's look like I can get thing Job but I don't get it. My family doesn't want me to settle anywhere else. I told my family 4 time a day that I can't live in this worst situation. Everyone (including the person who I work for) tell me that you can do it only you have money. Now I really don't know how to make money. My job not allow me to work for anyone. My productivity going down since I don't learn anything new. I thing if this happen to me for next 2 year I don't have any knowledge more then a peon. I hate it. When I was in other city then I see that if I spent 7 days their all my 7 days going better. even I go for travelling in green places then I like it. but all I hate it where I work for. When I work on other city then I see my productivity are improved and I don't hate my work. I listen a song "If you don't your love what are you doing it for". I seriously don' t know what I still live here because this place gave me nothing but depression and trouble. for people I clear that I don't belong to RICH or middle class family. All I got is doing something on my own or help of someone. affording a rental place make my run on footpath. All I save in one month is just 10$ (approximately) (actually I afford some guys's education now). Can a programmer live worst life like this. I really not happy. Today is a festival in India and I don't celebrate it because I really hate myself. I want to do suicide. someone guide me how to start solving this headache

• Are session aware Models a bad thing?

  I'm thinking specifically in Rails here, but I suspect this is a wider question. In a Rails web application I'm using data from the session in models in order that the models know who is logged in. I use this in a method which filters out some data from the database depending on a very simple permissions system. The thing is: using sessions in models in Rails requires a bit of a workaround. It works, but I've a feeling that it's something that I shouldn't be doing and I'm worried there's a big gotcha I'm missing. I suppose the Right Thing To Do would be to return all the data and filter out the not-wanted bits in the controller before passing that to the view, but doing it in the model seems to avoid quite a bit of code duplication and so feels "cleaner." Can anyone tell me why or shouldn't do this? Or that it's not a problem?

I now see different backlink domains, some of them already removed, that contains sexual content or other non relative content linking to my domain. How much influence does these strange linked domains have on my search result? Even if some of them are already removed for a couple of months. I have already disavow open sexual domains using the tool that Google provides.

• Can we identify individual sectors of a circle component uniquely in flex?

  I have a custom circle component in my application, which is divided into 3 sectors as of now.Can we uniquely identify each segments of this circle? I want to drag and drop text or images from another container to this circle component. But I want to place different images in the different sectors. • unreadable corrupted ntfs partition - lost clusters reported

  Hi, partition magic is reporting multiple 'bad file record signature' and 'lost clusters' errors on my 250GB samsung sata disk (connected via usb on a xp sp3). Unfortunately PM is unable to fix. PM shows the drive as being NTFS, detects used space ok and also drive name. But PM browser (right click on partition, browse...) won't show anything (as if disk was empty) Windows Explorer is not even picking the drive name and reports 'the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable' PTDD partition table doctor demo tells me the boot sector is fine, and I can see all disk content on its browser - but crucially cannot copy that content over to a new disk (PTDD browser is pretty arid to say the least) Also tried - photorec-6.11.3 - it actually started to extract files but wouldn't keep file names or any folder structure (maybe I missed sth on the configuration options) - find and mount - intellectual scan went well, the only partition on the disk was detected, then tried to mount into p: but got this error on windows explorer: 'p:\ is not accesible. The media is write protected'. Find and mount allows you to create an image from partition but I don't have a disk big enough at hand. Does anyone know if this will keep the extracted files/folders structure intact? I'm starting to think the disk is pretty screwed and my chances to recover this data are slim. Please someone enlighten me with that marvellous piece of software I am missing :-) Thanks in advance

• USB drive errors after airport scan

  Well, I just got a new PNY usb drive and it passed through an airport scanner yesterday. For some reason, I wrote to it and then tried to read from it today, and it gave me a corrupted error! chkdsk reports errors like: Bad links in lost chain at cluster 1179 corrected. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1200. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1228. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1236. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1237. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1244. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1250. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1266. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1278. Orphan truncated. etc. What is this from? Could it possibly be from the airport scanner, or is it likely a defective USB chip? How can I check the chip to see if I should just return/throw it away or continue to use it?

  I have two servers connected through SFTP. When I'm trying to upload file DONATE_SPLATNOSTSFRB-1503_20120315.xls.gpg via WinSCP, it works fine, but when I change file name to DONATE_SPLATNOSTSFRB-1503_20120315.gpg it sometimes upload to server and sometimes not. When It's uploaded, I have problems to delete it. • IIS 7 returning 400 Bad Request on POST

  Greetings, i am trying to POST data in a MVC 3 application to a server running IIS 7 using jquery ajax. When i post normally to the server, everything works ok, just when i post with ajax the server returns a 400 Bad request. • How can I recover a Fedora 12 installation that is showing signs of disk errors?

  I am currently overseas (i.e., very far from my normal library of tools) and my primary machine that would normally act as the data server in the performance test that we're trying to run is failing to boot to Fedora 12 properly. This is a machine that, as of yesterday, was booting fine. However, this morning, very strange portions of the boot process were complaining with messages such as "unexpected 0x0 in rpcbind" and "bad file descriptor" (I don't have the error in front of me - scavenged a windows installation to get onto serverfault). Eventually, the boot hung for a long time at the NFS service and then brought up what looked like the KDE login screen but neither the mouse nor keyboard functioned. In olden days, I would try to get to a point where I could manage to run fsck and pray that the bad sectors would come back into alignment just long enough for me to scrape the critical data off of the machine. However, now that we live in the future, it seems like our options in situations like this should be a little more varied. Is there a way to recover a Fedora 12 installation with bad disk sectors that won't boot properly? For completeness, I am comfortable working with bootable recovery distros-on-CD and such but I don't know which one is likely to work best with modern Fedora. In the absence of guidance, I'm frantically torrenting the Fedora 12 Live CD and DVD, hoping to try rescue mode before tomorrow morning.

  Hi All, I'm slowly locking down the network I've inherited and mac-flapping has been a problem in the past with customers doing all kinds of crazy things. Dec 30 18:48:18 10.50.1.50 1567: 001569: .Dec 30 18:48:17: %SPANTREE-2-RECV_BAD_TLV: Received SSTP BPDU with bad TLV on GigabitEthernet0/5 VLAN1. unfortunately, that mac address is the mac of our core router, the only link to the internet, on port gi0/48 On the other end of gi0/5, I have about 50 bridged customer machines connected through a series of managed and unmanaged L2 switches. Yes, on VLAN1 too ... like I said, working on changing this slowly. In the mean time, it has me quite baffled on how to deal with this and track down the customer or switch that is the problem. • Why is it a bad idea to use a customer email as the from address

  I've got an application that emails users once they have filled in a form. It uses a [email protected] as a from address. The customer wants it to use the email from the form as the from address which could be anything. I have been told that this is a bad idea due to spoofing/blacklisting and spam. I feel really vague about the exact reason about why this is a bad idea particularly as i've got to try to counsel the client out of this. Can someone explain to me why this is a bad idea. Interestingly the client has used a gmail account as the from address as a demo which not only works fine but has enabled the application to start sending emails (it wouldn't do it before with an email which was [email protected]). Erm - what is going on. I'm told one thing and the opposite works. Sorry - i know this is basic but I could find anything on a google search. Largely I think because I'm having trouble even framing the question. EDIT Thank you everyone - great answers. Interestingly the server sending the email and the mail box that it is going to are both behind the same firewall so the client says they are unconcerned about spam. Oh well.

I use grub2 to boot the system off this partition. On top of this raid10 I installed two volume groups, one for /, one for /home. This system worked well, I even exchanged two disks during the last two years. It always worked. But not this time. For the first time, /dev/sda broke. I do not know if this is an issue – I know I would have struggled anyways to overcome the problem with /boot installed on that disk and grub2 installed on the mbr of /dev/sda. Rebooting into knoppix does not help Restarting the old system (I actually replugged and re-added the failing disk for that – the system begins to start, but then fails to see the / partition – no wonder if the volume group is gone) does not help. sudo vgscan, sudo vgdisplay, sudo lvs, sudo lvdisplay, sudo vgscan –mknodes all returned No volume groups found. I am completely at a loss. Can anyone tell me if and how I can recover my data? Thanks in advance!

• Failed to unmount partitions

  I'm trying to install ubuntu from a pen drive. I have windows 7 installed already and want to keep that installation. I have a 3TB drive that has one 2TB partition on it, so the last 1TB is completely unused, which is where I want to install ubuntu. I started ubuntu in "try ubuntu" mode and then opened gparted, and then deleted the unused partition for the last third of my drive, then tried to install ubuntu. During the install, it asked me if I wanted to unmount the drives I already have The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda, /dev/sdb Do you want the installer to try to unmount the partitions on these disks before continuing? If you leave them mounted, you will not be able to create, delete, or resize partitions on these disks, but you may be able to install to existing partitions there. No, Yes I said no because I don't want to lose my windows 7 installation, nor any of that data. I wonder, if I had said yes above, would I have lost all the data on those drives? Anyways, I hit no and continued. I chose to install ubuntu alongside windows 7, and hit continue. What am I supposed to do? ========== Update: I went ahead and said yes, it can unmount those partitions. It finished installing Ubuntu, but now when i start my machine it just takes me to the grub rescue prompt. Seems like it broke something.
