  • MSDN Subscription

    My work just started (a couple of months ago actually) allowing us access to our MSDN subscriptions.  This is totally cool.  I’ve been begging, borrowing, and stealing all these years to have access to Visual Studio and the other tools.  Now, I’ve got them all.  It is totally cool.  What’s even cooler is that I’m going to be installing them (along with a brandy spanky new Windows 7 installation) on a MacBook or MacBookPro in the coming weeks.  How’s that for most excellent?

  • Bumblebee optirun appears to depend on Intel

    I have a Lenovo T420 with Intel and Nvidia graphics. On upgrade to Ubuntu Saucy, I had to purge and reinstall bumblebee-nvidia to get beyond optirun failing to find a GPU driver. Now, "optirun glxgears" and "optirun sol" succeed, but optirun fails on 2 Virtual Life viewers that it supported in the past, Cool VL (CoolVLViewer-1.26.8.34-Linux-x86) and Imprudence (Imprudence 1.4.0 beta2). In both cases, the error output is huge, but it starts with libGL error: failed to load driver: i965 and libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast From the little I can discover, i965 is an Intel graphics driver, which should not be invoked at all. I haven't found any information about swrast. I suspect that some of the X configuration associated with Bumblebee has some Intel dependence that is invoked on certain library calls, but not others. I haven't discovered any definite information on this line. The Cool VL Viewer runs without optirun, but complains about the insufficiency of the Intel graphics.

    SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Greetings! I will be speaking at NNUG Kristiansand tonight (sorry for the very short notice). So I was thinking what should I demo tonight?Hmm!!!Instead of using any slides or such material, what I thought would be a tonne of fun, would be to develop a service bus based application running in Azure. This will be a good opportunity to code and talk, and run into some snafus and show off some VS2012 improvements/annoyances. At the end of an apprx. 1 hour talk, I hope to have an application ready that you can run yourself by the end of the evening. hehe :) .. now that’s cool isn’t it? :) ..     Hot dog. IE 9 just hit the download sites this week. I have been running it for a few days and its really sweet. It seems much faster than IE 8 and many other browsers and its got lots of cool features. Some of the ones I really like are: New tab format with one click creation and putting them up top. Cleaner UI Ability to drag a tab off the tab bar and have a new window created Integrated address / search box Support for HTML 5   check out http://www.beautyoftheweb.com/ to see some of the cool features. Pay attention to the HTML 5 samples too. And theres lots more as its just getting off the ground. You can download it from Microsoft. Or you can get the version with hooks into bing and msn. Enjoy.

    Battleship! Back in 2003, (when I was 17,) I competed in a Battleship AI coding competition. Even though I lost that tournament, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from it. Now, I would like to resurrect this competition, in the search of the best battleship AI. Here is the framework: Battleship.zip The winner will be awarded +450 reputation! The competition will be held starting on the 17th of November, 2009. No entries or edits later than zero-hour on the 17th will be accepted. (Central Standard Time) Submit your entries early, so you don't miss your opportunity! To keep this OBJECTIVE, please follow the spirit of the competition. Rules of the game: The game is be played on a 10x10 grid. Each competitor will place each of 5 ships (of lengths 2, 3, 3, 4, 5) on their grid. No ships may overlap, but they may be adjacent. The competitors then take turns firing single shots at their opponent. A variation on the game allows firing multiple shots per volley, one for each surviving ship. The opponent will notify the competitor if the shot sinks, hits, or misses. Game play ends when all of the ships of any one player are sunk. Rules of the competition: The spirit of the competition is to find the best Battleship algorithm. Anything that is deemed against the spirit of the competition will be grounds for disqualification. Interfering with an opponent is against the spirit of the competition. Multithreading may be used under the following restrictions: No more than one thread may be running while it is not your turn. (Though, any number of threads may be in a "Suspended" state). No thread may run at a priority other than "Normal". Given the above two restrictions, you will be guaranteed at least 3 dedicated CPU cores during your turn. A limit of 1 second of CPU time per game is allotted to each competitor on the primary thread. Running out of time results in losing the current game. Any unhandled exception will result in losing the current game. Network access and disk access is allowed, but you may find the time restrictions fairly prohibitive. However, a few set-up and tear-down methods have been added to alleviate the time strain. Code should be posted on stack overflow as an answer, or, if too large, linked. Max total size (un-compressed) of an entry is 1 MB. Officially, .Net 2.0 / 3.5 is the only framework requirement. Your entry must implement the IBattleshipOpponent interface. Scoring: Best 51 games out of 101 games is the winner of a match. All competitors will play matched against each other, round-robin style. The best half of the competitors will then play a double-elimination tournament to determine the winner. (Smallest power of two that is greater than or equal to half, actually.) I will be using the TournamentApi framework for the tournament. The results will be posted here. If you submit more than one entry, only your best-scoring entry is eligible for the double-elim. EDIT 2: Since there has been significant interest in persisting stats to disk and such, I have added a few non-timed set-up and tear-down events that should provide the required functionality. This is a semi-breaking change. That is to say: the interface has been modified to add functions, but no body is required for them. Please download the updated version of the framework. EDIT 3: Bug Fix 1: GameWon and GameLost were only getting called in the case of a time out. Bug Fix 2: If an engine was timing out every game, the competition would never end.   • How to do a Windows 7 Image restore to an external drive?

    I have a system that I have done a Windows 7 Image restore on. I would like to migrate that image to a different hard drive. Is there a way to restore the image to an externally connected hard drive? For example: I have 3 hard drives: The first in the source machine (the one I want to copy). The second in a machine that I want to do the work. And the third is not in a machine. It is the target that I want to overwrite with the contents of the first. I boot up a 2nd machine and connect the 3rd hard drive externally (using some cool cables I have). I then use some cool feature of Windows 7 to replace what is on the 3rd hard drive with the windows 7 image of my 1st machine (that is on on my networked backup server). I need to know what the above mentioned "cool feature of windows 7" is, if there is one. And how to use it. Any ideas? Note: that I very much so don't want it to overwrite what is on the 2nd machine/hard drive.

I'm really just trying to figure out where to hang the classes/modules/methods in the framework and whit kind of object |p| should be. My first inclination was to create a PageBuilder class that implements header, body and sidebar methods. But I got stuck on the rendering pipeline to get everything output just right. Is there a gem that already provides this type of semantic generation? If not I'd love any insight on how to set this up.

    I'd like for any url that doesn't hit an existing file, to do a lookup on the other possible cases and see if those files exist, and if so, 302 to them. If that's not possible, then I'm ok with these compromises: Only check the lowercase version Only check the first path portion For example http://example.com/CoOl/PaTH/CaMELcaSE should redirect to http://example.com/cool/path/camelCase (assuming the latter exists). but of course a full solution is much more useful to me and others

    Um - I feel like an idiot, but.... ruby -e '3+5' Outputs nothing (Windows 7, Ruby 1.8.7, Cygwin or Git Bash). What am I missing? Extra credit - will this also allow the extra cool bundle (stolen from TextMate) Execute and Update # = markers to work properly? EDIT Ok that worked, and I'll accept the answer, but e-texteditor still doesn't work with that really cool bundle. Too bad.

  • What guidelines do you suggest for using Objective-C Properties?

    Objective-C 2.0 introduced properties. While I personally think properties are nice addition to the language, I have seen a trend of making every instance variable as a property. Apple sample codes are no exceptions to this. I believe this is against the spirit of OOP, and since it exposes a lot more implementation details of a class to the client than they need to know. What guidelines do you suggest for the proper usage properties in Objective C?

  • Use controller in view in MVC

    I have a problem convincing my team mates why we shouldn't use (directly reference) the controller in the view when developing components in the spirit of MVC. I have invoked decoupling and natural intuition, but still those arguments didn't get through. They say, in their defense, that this is a normal compromise. What arguments are convincing? Or they are right? How can the practice of using the controller in the view could affect a project on the long run?
