  • How to speed up 'cold start' of .NET component called from VB6 app

    I have a VB6 app which brings up a form by invoking a .NET DLL, but the problem is that this form takes almost 5 seconds to appear after a menu item in the VB6 app is selected. How can I speed this up? I'm thinking that one possible solution is to load the Form from the .NET DLL during the splash screen of the VB6 app but make invisible or somehow not show it, and then when the menu item is selected I will make it show or visible. What are my options?

  • How can I protect this code from SQL Injection? A bit confused.

    I've read various sources but I'm unsure how to implement them into my code. I was wondering if somebody could give me a quick hand with it? Once I've been shown how to do it once in my code I'll be able to pick it up I think! This is from an AJAX autocomplete I found on the net, although I saw something to do with it being vulnerable to SQL Injection due to the '%$queryString%' or something?   • keep only GUI when converting vb6 app to c#?

    I have a large VB6 app which I want to convert to C#. The majority of the code in VB6 is quite badly written. I thought that a good strategy would be to keep the GUI design since it is adequate and would be a pain to recreate. But I would want to rewrite the code behind the GUI and the data layer. I could keep the GUI design by using one of the VB6 to .NET converters provided by Microsoft. Would this be a good strategy?

  • AssociationTypeMismatch with Expected Type on Nested Model Forms

    I'm getting this exception when doing a nested model form: ActiveRecord::AssociationTypeMismatch in RecipesController#update Ingredient(#35624480) expected, got Ingredient(#34767560) The models involved are Recipe and Ingredient. Recipe has_many and accepts_nested_attributes_for :ingredients, which belongs_to :recipe. I get this exception when attempting to _destroy (=1) one of the preexisting Ingredients on a nested Ingredient form for the Recipe Edit/Update. This makes very little sense, mostly because the association types are as expected (by the exception's own admission). What makes even less sense is that it works just fine in a functional test. Any ideas what might be causing this, or what I should be looking for?

    Hello everyone, I am having trouble with a homework question that I've been working at for quite some time. I don't know exactly why the question is asking and need some clarification on that and also a push in the right direction. Here is the question: (2) Solve this problem using one single subscripted array of counters. The program uses an array of characters defined using the C initialization feature. The program counts the number of each of the alphabetic characters a to z (only lower case characters are counted) and prints a report (in a neat table) of the number of occurrences of each lower case character found. Only print the counts for the letters that occur at least once. That is do not print a count if it is zero. DO NOT use a switch statement in your solution. NOTE: if x is of type char, x-‘a’ is the difference between the ASCII codes for the character in x and the character ‘a’. For example if x holds the character ‘c’ then x-‘a’ has the value 2, while if x holds the character ‘d’, then x-‘a’ has the value 3.   • How can I improve this search usability?

    This is the first real programming attempt of mine, and theres some major flaws. It's a learning project, and I'm currently re-writing the entire thing as my php is is really messy. I really want to get an idea on how I can improve the actual usability and accesibility of the site at the same time though - so I know how to implement it correctly. The website is basically a comparison website for gameserver hosting. As I mentioned, its a learning project and I don't actually expect any revenue from it. At the moment theres only test data in it, so in the game input box select either 'Battlefied Bad Company 2' or 'Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare' and ignore the actual search results. http://www.laglessfrag.com I wasn't really sure how to work the search functionality. Basically when you click a game in the drop down box, it sends an ajax request and finds all the locations available to that specific game in the database. After selecting the country theres another ajax to find all the citys available to the game in that country - which gives me the two unique identifiers I need to create the search results. One major and fundamental flaw is that without javascript enabled, the site ceases to function. I'll overcome that in the next re-write, but without the ajax functionality stopping the user 'going wrong' - how can I implement a search that requires two fields without creating extra steps in new pages after form submissions? I'm also no designer so my whole layout and css is a bit rubbish, but this was mainly a learning project as I'm interested in applications / programming rather than design. It's also slow as its on shared hosting, but if I can get it to work correctly then I'm not impartial to chucking a bit of money at it for faster hosting and maybe a bit of advertising and seeing where it goes (if anywhere!). Any info appreciated.

  • VB6: Question about version numbers of dependent OCXs

    Is it important for a VB6 app to refer to certain OCX versions? I have noticed that if I put my VB6 app code through the IDE on one machine then the form files will refer to different version of some OCXs than if I use another machine. What is the rule of thumb with this? Is it safe to assume that most of these old OCX versions will be compatible with each other and so I shouldn't worry? Some of the OCXs in question are: RICHTX32.OCX v1.1 and v1.2 COMCTL32.OCX v1.2 and v1.3

I have found one here but it doesn't work. The format seems similar to the en-US one, but it just doesn't work (i.e. it doesn't suggest any words).

  • How to quickly analyse large MDB file

    I need to know how to quickly analyse a large MDB file (about 1GB) to see which tables are causing it to be so big. Is there something will easily allow me to show a breakdown of which tables are responsible for how much data. I need to know whether it is just this one customer who is using the application differently, or whether there is genuinely a lot of data in the MDB. This MDB is currently causing the VB app to crash, and I need to know why it is so big so that I can maybe think about how to put some of the data into another 'archival' MDB. Migrating to SQL Server is not an option, unless the use of linked tables from an MDB is a realistic option.

  • Is it possible to share a masterpage between MVC and webforms?

    I am adding MVC to a project that has MANY legacy webform pages. This works fine. However, I currently have a separate masterpage for MVC and for the webforms. The two master pages produce essentially identical output. I'd really like to kill the webforms one and just use the MVC master page with all my pages and stay DRY. Not being DRY has already bitten me a couple times when I forgot to change both. I tried doing the obvious way and just pointing the webform content page's MasterPage attribute at the MVC masterpage. This throws an error saying the MVC masters only work with MVC views. This seems like it would be a pretty common problem with mixed MVC and webform projects. My MVC master isn't doing anything with ViewData, so I don't see any reason the webforms couldn't use them.

    I have a page that has a large image on it with a number of thumbnails. When you mouse over a thumbnail the main image changes to the image you have just rolled your mouse over. The problem is the more thumbnails I have, the more repeated code I have. How could I reduce it? What should be the effect of the HAVING clause here?
