   By Karen Shamban While Oracle OpenWorld attendees are networking, there's an Oracle Global IT team that builds and maintains the massive networks that help run the show. The objective? To keep things running as seamlessly and smoothly as possible, constantly evaluate priorities, mitigate risk, and be ready for whatever might happen -- because things do happen when there are 50,000 plus attendees, tens of thousands of devices, unexpected requirements, and a constant flow of up-to-the-minute information. Here's just some of what it takes to keep the conference going, network style: 100 Oracle network, voice, and desktop engineers; security, risk management, and other IT experts, who come in from 17 countries  1000+ network switches 300+ miles of copper and fiber 485 wireless access points 2,500 wired laptops 300 VoIP phones And just where are all these networks and devices deployed? This is what the team had to build and manage: Moscone North, South, and West, including: The keynote hall Oracle DEMOgrounds in the Exhibition Halls Hundreds of session rooms Connection Centers, Social Avenue, Lounges Registration The Howard Street Tent and Taylor Street Cafe tented venues Oracle Square (Union Square) Yerba Buena Gardens Masonic Auditorium Sessions and demos at 8 hotel venues That's a whole lot of networking going on. And here's the kicker: the team has only 4 days to bring get it all up and running across these many venues, and exactly 12 hours to take it all down once the show ends. The Global IT team puts in the equivalent of 152 24-hour days for set-up, 227 24-hour days of support during the conferences, and then tears it all down in about 20 24-hour days. And in case you were wondering, the planning for next year's Oracle OpenWorld starts ... next week. • How should a team share/store game content during development?

  Other than Dropbox, what out there has been especially useful for storing and sharing game content like images during development (similar feature set to Dropbox like working offline, automatic syncing and support for windows/osx)? We are looking into hosting our own SharePoint server but it seems to be really focused on documents... Maybe Box.net would work? EDIT For code, we are using Git. To be more precise, I was looking for an easy, automatic way for content produced by artists/audio engineers to be available to everyone. Features like approvals of assets don't hurt either. Following the answer linked by Tetrad, Alienbrain looked pretty interesting but..is way out of our budget (may be something to invest in in the future). What ended up doing... We were going to go with Box.net but downloading the sync apps for desktop use required us to wait to be contacted by them for some reason. We did not have much time to wait so we ended up going with Dropbox Teams. Box.net has a nice feature set but we never really felt held back without them. Thanks for the help :).

• Suggest Cisco Router for a small company of 60-100 Users

  Trying to find the right router to use - we'd like to go Cisco. We have ~60 programmers that do alot of remote server work. Will grow to 100 programmers by the end of the year. We've talked to companies that sell Cisco routers. While they make recommendations, we feel that the sales guys may be selling us an overkill solution. What kind of company (that is not linked to sales of routers) can provide a service to recommend the right kind of router for our company? There are lots of network engineers out there, but am looking for some company that focuses on advising a network solution. Any suggestions of companies are welcome.

• Can't Connect To A Game Server

  I'm having issues connecting to a certain game server. The game is Space Engineers. I did a wireshark and the owner of the server did as well and it just tries to request and bind until it times out on the client of the game. Nothing is dropped or red it just doesn't connect to download data from the server. Other people are able to connect to the server just fine. I do not think it is an issue with the server, but what could it possibly be and what can I do to get rid of this problem? I've tried cleaning registry, shutting off windows firewall, restarting my computer, and most recently the wireshark. Thanks,

• Are there any FreeRTOS interpreted language libraries available?

  I work for a company that created firmware for several device using FreeRTOS. Lately our request for new features has surpassed how much work our firmware engineers are capable of, but we can't afford to hire anyone new right now either. Making even tiny changes requires firmware people to go in and modify things at a very low level. I've been looking for some sort of interpreted language project for FreeRTOS that would let us implement new features at a higher level. Ideally I would like to get things eventually so the devices become closer to generic computers with us writing drivers, rather than us having to implement every feature ourselves. Are there any FreeRTOS projects that interpret java, python or similar bytecode? I've looked on google, but since I'm not a firmware engineer myself I'm not sure if I'm looking for the right keywords. Thanks everyone

Assuming the vast majority of users here are professional software engineers which need some sort of income source, I assume most of us hold stable, money-making jobs. So who are the key players in the open source community? Who are the people which devote their precious time to these projects? What is their benefit? Are the majority just people who see a bug, fix it, submit, and forget about the project? Or are they people constantly involved in the process of building the product? How do you find yourself contributing to open source projects?

• How to assemble a multi-project ant build system

  At my new gig, they use Ant and cannot be persuaded to move to Maven. I've looked everywhere for a decent example of how a multi-project ant build system should be assembled. The apache site falls short. I'm looking specifically for best practices to: Automatically build local projects that are dependencies of a project Share artifacts from project to their dependents Export a project's dependencies and generated artifacts (jars) to be inherited by dependent projects Share third-party dependencies between projects I'm sure I can do all this without using Ivy - what did people do before Ivy? I really don't want to have to set up a corporate repository or rely on external repositories - the engineers here are really against that and have all their third-party jars checked into src control. Can anyone point me at a good open source example of a multi-project ant build?

• Hook Response.Cache to memcache

  Has anyone done this before? I have a 32 bit win 2003 server running 2.0 and have read the ms engineers' blog about min(60%, 1800mb) for cache limits and our site (asp.net 2.0 / 3.5) is caching alot. It throws system outofmemory exceptions when wp is around 1.3gb (unfortunately it is the 2.0 apps) and I would like to push alot over to memcache but worried that at the moment the site is efficient using response.cache as is (though memory is an issue). I want to move most items over to memcache and have concerns on a – how to do this (implementation of response.cache to read/write from memcache) and b – what will performance be like? Before I commit to doing this and possibly spending a few days running tests I would like to hear from you if this has been done already and get some feedback. (and please don’t tell me to buy a x64 machine – I have already requested this!), by the way I ran a test requesting a single image 1000 times and response.cache was over 50% quicker than using application cache. Does response.cache bypass the page lifecycle?

  Hi, I've read the post "What is the best book on numerical methods?" and I wish to ask more or less the same question but in relation to C programming. Most of the time, C programming books on numerical methods are just another version of the author's previous Fortran book on the same subject. I've seen Applied numerical methods in C by Nakamura, Shoichiro and the C codes are not good programming practice. I've heard bad comments about Numerical Recipes by Press. Do you know good books on C that discusses numerical methods. It's seem better for me to ask about good books on C discussing numerical methods than rather asking books on numerical methods that discusses C. I've heard about Numerical Algorithms with C by Giesela Engeln-Müllges and A Numerical Library in C for Scientists and Engineers bu Lau but haven't read them. Good books will always have algorithms implemented in the programming language in a smart way. Thanks a lot...

  I run a small startup and am always on the lookout for quality engineers. I've seen someone solicit SO with a similar question but there was only one response so I'm going to solicit the community again. (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/112766/free-application-to-keep-track-of-a-recruiting-process didn't suffice for me) Over a long period of time, I've found that my system of recruiting is incredibly inefficient. An applicant who might have been attractive the first week might become overshadowed by other applicants further down the road. Sometimes, applicants who I ignored become relevant to a new position that opens up as an web app becomes more robust and takes a turn in a direction I didn't consider. These are all difficult to track. Knowing that recruiting intelligent people should be an ongoing process, what are the best web applications for managing the process? Are there any apps with features catered specifically towards tech startups? (Free or paid, doesn't matter).

• Using Subversion in Xcode

  It seems that all of the initial Google results for "using subversion with xcode" are actually just tutorials for installing and configuring svn and Xcode, as opposed to actually using the two (i.e. interacting with svn via Xcode's GUI). Is anyone aware of a good guide that teaches the tricks and pitfalls of working with svn via Xcode's GUI? Something that bridges the gap between the most excellent Version Control with Subversion book and the Xcode IDE (as in pure Xcode GUI without any terminal command use)? Edit: We all love our terminal commands, and we all love Eclipse but (and I mean this in the nicest possible way) neither is really the point of the question. I’d prefer to use svn via Xcode’s IDE instead of via terminal just as I prefer (well, for this case) to code in Xcode’s IDE instead of using vim and gcc. Apple engineers spent a good bit of time implementing that SCM menu in Xcode; someone has to have seen a usage guide somewhere.

  say a company is using Open source libraries, or programs, and packaging it into a proprietary solution. or perhaps, the engineers have copy pasted certain section of those open source libraries and have compiled it now, into a very useful "proprietary" software suite. what legal troubles will this company face if any ? are you allowed to do this ? i mean the customer doesn't see the source codes, only runs the binary files on their computer. for example, i find an excellent NLP library in python, and decide to use it in my program that i am selling for $4000 USD (i write like 10 lines of code and let the library do the work). could i get into trouble ? would i need to write the NLP library myself from scratch to be considered "proprietary" ? danke

  I am not sure if this question is in the scope of SO, but I will ask anyway... I am currently going to school, majoring in Computer Science. Often I overhear students in the Management of Information Systems major call themselves programmers. These comments make me angry for a few reasons: They seem to trivialize what I do. Most of them are not even capable of doing what I can do. To me, MIS is IT and the are technicians and software developers are engineers and are not IT. So I guess my question is, Is software development part of IT? I often see them lumped together.

  Hi All, I'm sure we've all been exposed over the past few days to the delights of the vuvuzela (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8738604.stm). In an attempt to mask the waspish 'parp' from our living rooms, tv sound engineers are devising all sorts of filters to try and 'calm' the abhoration :). some tho say that it simply 'adds to the ambience' and that masking it out would be a denial of its 'additive' character. Now, on a programming related front, have you had to mask any extraneous 'noise' in a piece of work that you've picked up from someone else (or perhaps even your own!!)?? If so how 'inspired' was your remedy and how did you creatively 'reverse' it out once the noise had subsided and/or the pitch changed. :) tongue firmly in cheek... jim

  Hello, I'm doing a university project, that must gather and combine data on a user provided topic. The problem I've encountered is that Google search results for many terms are polluted with low quality autogenerated pages and if I use them, I can end up with wrong facts. How is it possible to estimate the quality/trustworthiness of a page? You may think "nah, Google engineers are working on the problem for 10 years and he's asking for a solution", but if you think about it, SE must provide up-to-date content and if it marks a good page as a bad one, users will be dissatisfied. I don't have such limitations, so if the algorithm accidentally marks as bad some good pages, that wouldn't be a problem.

• How to set breakpoint in inline Javascript in Google Chrome browser for linux?

  When I open Developer Tools in Google Chrome, I see all kinds useless crap like Profiles, Timelines, not to mentions Audits but basic functionality like being able to set breakpoint both in js files and within html javascript code is missing!. I tried to use javascript Console which itself is buggy ( like when once it encounter JS error, cannot get out of it unless refresh the whole page useless when ajax is involved). I am surprised google engineers still have not figured this out if these features still not available. If they are and there is some twisted way to do this, can some one help?

And/or, how long before there will be certain regulated certifications before you can call yourself a "software developer", like Architects and Engineers have now? The documentation was out of date the moment that it was approved and published. The original developers are LTAO, at the next project/startup/loony bin and not answering email. What are you going to do? {favourite editor} and Grep will get you started on your spelunking through the gnarling guts of the code base but what other tools should be in the maintenance engineers toolbox? To start the ball-rolling; I don't think I could live without source-insight for C/C++ spelunking. (DISCLAIMER: I don't work for 'em).

  Hello app engineers! I'm on an app engine project where I'd like to put in a link to a Javascript test runner that I'd like to only exist when running the development server. I've made some experiments on a local shell with configuration loaded using the technique found in NoseGAE versus live on the 'App Engine Console' [1] and it looks to me like a distinction btw real instance and dev server is the presence of the module google.appengine.tools. Which lead me to this utility function: def is_dev(): """ Tells us if we're running under the development server or not. :return: ``True`` if the code is running under the development server. """ try: from google.appengine import tools return True except ImportError: return False The question (finally!) would be: is this a bad idea? And in that case, can anyone suggest a better approach?   One of the best ways to learn about programming is reading high quality code/projects from great engineers. Which open-source projects do you think is worth looking at? I mean, that code that you can print and sit under a tree with a glass of wine and enjoy reading. If you can, also specify if the software is great to look at because its documentation, design, UML diagrams or just plain code. I believe UML is not very common within open-source projects. Is there such a thing as a project branch that polishes code and design with the sole objective to give other programmers a great example of great software?
