  After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." Since the CBS.log file is too large, I ran findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (as per Microsoft's KB 928228 article) to only get the log text pertaining to the corrupt files. (log is also posted below) How do I troubleshoot and repair the corrupted files mentioned by sfc /scannow?   When viewing a jpg or mp3 in Windows Explorer, the bottom pane shows metadata from the media file. Furthermore, for video and picture, the icon is shown as a preview of the media. Is there a way to add this kind of functionality to windows for custom file types that aren't supported by default in windows? Is there a certain sort of plugin or extension that must be written?   Since transferring or copying a file that is being used sometimes causes corruption of the transferred file, can we define a time interval in which Rsync checks each file in a given directory to see if there is a change within that time interval ? Files that are not changed during that interval will be transferred, while those that have changes will not. Can I do that with rsync ? Or another tool ? How can i achieve this? I have used fgets(line,sizeof(line),file); but it starts reading from the beginning. I don't have the exact line number to start and stop reading since the file is written by another C code. But there are these identifiers startread and stopread to identify whereto start reading. • Delete file after sharing via intent.

  I'm trying to delete a temporary file after sharing it via android's Intent.ACTION_SEND feature. Right now I am starting the activity for a result and in OnActivityResult, I am deleting the file. Unfortunately this only works if I am debugging it with a breakpoint, but when I let it run freely and say, email the file, the email has no attachment. I think what is happening is my activity is deleting the file before it had been emailed. What I don't get is why, shouldn't onActivityResult only be called AFTER the other activity is finished? I have also tried deleting the file in onResume, but no luck. Is there a better way to do this?

• Password-protected sharing allows access to users who have no account?

  Running Win7 on two computers in my LAN. Computer A has password-protected sharing enabled, and shares a folder. It has a single user account "Bob", and the Guest account is turned off. The network is workgroup-based. According to the descriptions of the "password-protected sharing" I could find, the only people who can access the shared folder via the LAN are those who know the username+password for the "Bob" account. However a second computer on the LAN is able to view this shared folder by simply browsing to Computer A. They don't need to enter any passwords or anything. The only user account registered on that PC is called "Jim", and has a different password from "Bob". How on earth is computer B able to view this shared folder? Is the popular description of the "password-protected sharing" feature inaccurate / did I misunderstand it big time? P.S. There is a possibility that the password for "Bob" has been entered on that PC once, and possibly the "remember password" box was checked. I've looked in the "Credential Manager" on both computers and there is nothing saved anywhere.

It'll be very rudimentary: only an XML file containing some parameters (such as frame duration) and metadata, and some images, each representing a frame. I'd like to have the whole animation (frames and XML document) packed in a single file. How do you suggest I do that? What libraries are there that would allow easy access to the files inside the animation file itself? The language I'm using is C++ and the platform is Windows, but I'd rather not use a platform dependent library, if possible.

  I am needing to import a tab delimited text file that has 11 columns and an unknown number of rows (always minimum 3 rows). I would like to import this text file as an array and be able to call data from it as needed, throughout my project. And then, to make things more difficult, I need to replace items in the array, and even add more rows to it as the project goes on (all at runtime). Hopefully someone can suggest code corrections or useful methods. I'm hoping to use something like the array style sMyStrings(3,2), which I believe would be the easiest way to control my data. Any help is gladly appreciated, and worthy of a slab of beer.   The core of any file server is its file system and ZFS provides the foundation on which we have built our ubiquitous file sharing and single access control model.  ZFS has a rich, Windows and NFSv4 compatible, ACL implementation (ZFS only uses ACLs), it understands both UNIX IDs and Windows SIDs and it is integrated with the identity mapping service; it knows when a UNIX/NIS user and a Windows user are equivalent, and similarly for groups.  We have a single access control architecture, regardless of whether you are accessing the system via NFS or SMB/CIFS.The NFS and SMB protocol services are also integrated with the identity mapping service and shares are not restricted to UNIX permissions or Windows permissions.  All access control is performed by ZFS, the system can always share file systems simultaneously over both protocols and our model is native access to any share from either protocol.Modal architectures have unnecessary restrictions, confusing rules, administrative overhead and weird deployments to try to make them work; they exist as a compromise not because they offer a benefit.  Having some shares that only support UNIX permissions, others that only support ACLs and some that support both in a quirky way really doesn't seem like the sort of thing you'd want in a multi-protocol file server.  Perhaps because the server has been built on a file system that was designed for UNIX permissions, possibly with ACL support bolted on as an add-on afterthought, or because the protocol services are not truly integrated with the operating system, it may not be capable of supporting a single integrated model.With a single, integrated sharing and access control model: If you connect from Windows or another SMB/CIFS client: The system creates a credential containing both your Windows identity and your UNIX/NIS identity.  The credential includes UNIX/NIS IDs and SIDs, and UNIX/NIS groups and Windows groups. If your Windows identity is mapped to an ephemeral ID, files created by you will be owned by your Windows identity (ZFS understands both UNIX IDs and Windows SIDs). If your Windows identity is mapped to a real UNIX/NIS UID, files created by you will be owned by your UNIX/NIS identity. If you access a file that you previously created from UNIX, the system will map your UNIX identity to your Windows identity and recognize that you are the owner.  Identity mapping also supports access checking if you are being assessed for access via the ACL. If you connect via NFS (typically from a UNIX client): The system creates a credential containing your UNIX/NIS identity (including groups). Files you create will be owned by your UNIX/NIS identity. If you access a file that you previously created from Windows and the file is owned by your UID, no mapping is required. Otherwise the system will map your Windows identity to your UNIX/NIS identity and recognize that you are the owner.  Again, mapping is fully supported during ACL processing. • Debugger for file I/O development?

  Okay, the question title may be a bit cryptic. But it aptly describes what I'm looking for: I think every experienced coder went through this numerous times: You get a binary file format specification, you implement the reader for it, and… nothing works like expected. So you run your code in the debugger, go execute through the code line by line, every header field is read in seemingly correct, but when it comes to the bulk data, offset and indices no longer match up. What would really help in this situation was a binary file viewer, that shows you the progress of your file pointer, as you step through the code, and ideally would also highlight all memory maps. Then you could see the context of the current I/O operations, most notably those darn "off-by-one" mistakes, which are even more annoying when reading a file. Implementing such a debugger should not be too hard. traces on the process' file descriptors/handles and triggers on the I/O functions, to update the display. Only: I don't know of such a kind of debugger to exist. Do I just lack knowledge about the existance of such a tool, or is there really no such thing?

• Large uploaded file won't display in Ubuntu One but is included in file usage

  On Ubuntu 10.04, I uploaded a single 711 MB. My total file usage in Ubuntu One went up to 877MB, which is about right, but the file doesn't show in Ubuntu One so I can't download or delete it. Either the file is there and I can't see it for some reason. Or the file is not there and the total file usage figure is wrong. Does anyone know what has happened? I have a free account but am well below my 5GB limit.

• best way to output a full precision double into a text file

  Hi, I need to use an existing text file to store some very precise values. When read back in, the numbers essentially need to be exactly equivalent to the ones that were originally written. Now, a normal person would use a binary file... for a number of reasons, that's not possible in this case. So... do any of you have a good way of encoding a double as a string of characters (aside from increasing the precision). My first thought was to cast the double to a char[] and write out the chars. I don't think that's going to work because some of the characters are not visible, produce sounds, and even terminate strings ('\0'... I'm talkin to you!) Thoughts?

  Our problem/question revolves around an upload control that loses the selected file (goes blank) when a postback control is used (in this case, the dropdown list posts). HOWEVER, if the user selects a file first, and then selects a category, the screen will do a partial refresh and the selected file will disappear (field goes blank). As a result, the user needs to select the file again. This causes an issue because the fact that the file is no longer selected can easily be overlooked. • C read part of file into cache

  I have to do a program (for Linux) where there's an extremely large index file and I have to search and interpret the data from the file. Now the catch is, I'm only allowed to have x-bytes of the file cached at any time (determined by argument) so I have to remove certain data from the cache if it's not what I'm looking for. If my understanding is correct, fopen (r) doesn't put anything in the cache, only when I call getc or fread(specifying size) does it get cached. So my question is, lets say I use fread and read 100 bytes but after checking it, only 20 of the 100 bytes contains the data I need; how would I remove the useless 80 bytes from cache (or overwrite it) in order to read more from the file.

  I have a 140 MB text file, which contains detail information of books in library. For each book details there is a standard format data details in text file. I need to parse it and insert the data in Database. Here, parsing text file is not an issue. I am facing problem in parsing this large file. So i decided to split the file in small file around 2 MB each file. But i can't manually split this large file in so many pieces. I got HJsplit tool, which split the file but this also doesn't helped as this split the file but 1 book details half part is in one file and rest part is in second file. so if i split this way then information will be missed. How to split the large so that i cant miss the information ? Is there any tool which help me in this condition.
