• Changing Windows 'hosts' file in guest OS under Parallels Desktop 6

  Hi all, I am running Win7 in a Parallels Desktop 6 on Mac. I would like to modify my Windows hosts file. When doing this through notepad it says "You don't have permission to save in this location..." I am logged on as a regular windows user - not as 'local admin'. How can I edit the file? How can I grant my regular user 'local admin' rights? How can change the Windows user to 'admin' ... this option seems to be missing in my windows install... Does anybody recognize the issue? • FTP proxy that translates from passive to active

  Is it possible to install a proxy server that will transform passive ftp to active ftp? Details of my problem: I would like to deploy my web sites using Visual Studio's built in publish web site function. The problem is that my web hotel only supports active ftp, and unfortunately Visual Studio 2010 has a bug, so the publish function only works with passive ftp. My idear is to install a tiny local ftp proxy, that is able to transform passive ftp mode to active mode. I would then enter localhost as the publish server in Visual Studio, and the proxy would do the actual uploading of the files to my web hotel. • Home and End keys in Emacs don't work when run from Tmux

  When I run Emacs from Tmux, the Home and End keys do not work (Home key runs the Search command as if C-s was pressed). The problem started when I added this in my ~/.bashrc file: TERM="xterm" export TERM I've read somewhere that TERM variable should not be set manually but this was the only way I was able to solve problems with colors. Without this setting I got different colors in Emacs when running directly from the terminal and different when running from Tmux. This option caused some of the keys not to work in Emacs when it was run from Tmux, so I added this line to my ~/.tmux.conf: set-window-option -g xterm-keys on This solved problem with all keys except for Home and End. Any ideas how to make these keys work again?

• Why is hg fetch a deprecated extension? [closed]

  Mercurial's fetch extenson conveniently pulls and merges from a remote repository. Recently, this feature has been deprecated by the developers. They recommend avoiding it and it is on the unloved features list. It is useful in many cases to be able to pull and initiate a merge with one command (which hg pull -u doesn't do). I assume there is a reason behind the deprecation but I haven't been able to find one in the documentation or online. What is the reason behind deprecating it? I'm not looking for opinions, but rather the factual reason behind its deprecation (which might be that the dev team's opinion is that it should not be used).

• Why doesn't SSHFS let me look into a mounted directory?

  I use SSHFS to mount a directory on a remote server. There is a user xxx on client and server. UID and GID are identical on both boxes. I use sshfs -o kernel_cache -o auto_cache -o reconnect -o compression=no \ -o cache_timeout=600 -o ServerAliveInterval=15 \ [email protected]:/mnt/content /home/xxx/path_to/content to mount the directory on the remote server. When I log in as xxx on the client I have no problems. I can cd into /home/xxx/path_to/content. But when I log in on the client as another user zzz and then $ ls -l /home/xxx/path_to I get this d????????? ? ? ? ? ? content and on $ ls -l /home/xxx/path_to/content I get ls: cannot access content: Permission denied When I do $ ls -l /mnt on the remote server I get drwxr-xr-x 6 xxx xxx 4096 2011-07-25 12:51 content What am I doing wrong? The permissions seem to be correct to me. Am I wrong?

• Computer only booting after POWER ON/OFF 10 times or more?

  Hi fellow geeks, recently my computer started to behave like an old car and won't start up anymore unless I flip the power switch repeatedly. What happens when I power it on: CPU fans spins briefly and very slowly, then it stops Same with GPU fan No BIOS beeps or HDD activity Screen stays black After turning it on and off for like 10 times, it'll eventually boot like normal and run smooth without any problems what-so-ever. But I'm worried it might eventually die completely. Anyone know the most common cause of this? Maybe I should just leave the computer powered on? :)

• emails not working after domain has been forwarded to new hosting?

  What's the best course of action after the forwarding of domain has been done and apparently the email has been forgotten to be taken into account? I just forwarded the domain to a new server hosting and i forgot to take into account the emails from the old provider? A few concerns arise: the emails won't be lost, right? will pointing the MX records to the old mail server IP address fix this issue right away? Thanks!

• How are suspected DoS attacks handled by webservers?

  I rent a server somewhere out in Canada or so that I'm using to host a website of mine. That website has close to 400,000 pages that I wanted to index today. For that, I wrote a crawler a while back (see JCrawler on Stackoverflow.com). Now, I'm greedy and didn't want it to take too long so I ran multiple threads resulting in some 60+ requests per second from my IP. A couple minutes later, my server locked me out. I can still FTP into it, but I can't HTTP it. As server administrator or user, do you have any idea how servers usually handle these situations? Is it common to place a permanent or temporary ban on the IP or what is typically done? Naturally, I'll re-run my software with fewer requests once I'm back on.

• How to combine wildcards and spaces (quotes) in an Windows command?

  I want to remove directories of the following format: C:\Program Files\FogBugz\Plugins\cache\[email protected]_NN NN is a number, so I want to use a wildcard (this is part of a post-build step in Visual Studio). The problem is that I need to combine quotes around the path name (for the space in Program Files) with a wildcard to match the end of the path. I already found out that rd is the remove command that accepts wildcards, but where do I put the quotes? I have tried no ending quote (works for dir), ...example.com*", ...example.com"*, ...example.com_??", ...cache\"[email protected]*, ...cache"\[email protected]*, but none of them work. (How many commands to remove a file/directory are there in Windows anyway? And why do they all differ in capabilities?)

• Reason for perpetual dynamic DNS updates?

  I'm using dynamic DNS (the "adult" version from RFC 2136, not à la DynDNS), and for a while now I've been seeing my laptops with MacOS 10.6.x churning out updates about every 10 seconds. And seemingly redundant updates at that, as the IP is more or less stable (consumer broadband). I don't remember seeing that frequency in the (distant...) past. The lowest time-to-live that MacOS pushes on the entries is 2 minutes, so I have no clue what's going on. ... I find this behavior strange. D 0 Fri Jan 7 10:08:55 2011 .. D 0 Fri Jan 7 07:58:31 2011 58994 blocks of size 262144. 50356 blocks available This behavior is present on both a Windows client and a Linux client system. The behavior is present with the firewall on and with the firewall off, so it's not that. Neither /var/log/messages nor /var/log/secure have any complaints about Samba. I doubt that SELinux is a problem: just in case, here are the relevant settings. [root@server ~]# getsebool -a | grep samba samba_domain_controller --> off samba_enable_home_dirs --> on samba_export_all_ro --> off samba_export_all_rw --> off samba_share_fusefs --> off samba_share_nfs --> off use_samba_home_dirs --> on virt_use_samba --> off What am I doing wrong here, and what can I do to fix it? Edit: SELinux probably is the problem, judging by the fact that the issue goes away when I set SELinux to "permissive" or issue setsebool -P samba_export_all_rw on - both of which are unacceptable for production environments. What the heck kind of context does a directory need to have on it for Samba users to actually get files from it? I consider rolling your own rules and/or context to be deeply sub-optimal.

• 403 Forbidden error on Mac OSX - Apache and nginx

  Hi All, There are a million questions like this on Google, but I haven't found a solution to my problem. The default Apache install on my Mac is giving 403 Forbidden errors for everything (default directory, user home directory, virtual server, etc). After sifting through the config files, I figured I'd give nginx a try. Nginx serves files fine from it's home directory, but it won't serve files from a subfolder of my user directory. I've configured a simple virtual host, and requesting index.html returns a 403-forbidden. • How to allow writing to a mounted NFS partition

  How do you allow a specific user permission to write to an NFS partition? I've mounted an NFS share on my localhost (a Fedora install), and I can read and write as root, but I'm unable to write as the apache user, even though all the files and directories in the share on my localhost and remote host are owned by apache.
