• Ways to ensure unique instances of a class?

  I'm looking for different ways to ensure that each instance of a given class is a uniquely identifiable instance. For example, I have a Name class with the field name. Once I have a Name object with name initialised to John Smith I don't want to be able to instantiate a different Name object also with the name as John Smith, or if instantiation does take place I want a reference to the orginal object to be passed back rather than a new object. I'm aware that one way of doing this is to have a static factory that holds a Map of all the current Name objects and the factory checks that an object with John Smith as the name doesn't already exist before passing back a reference to a Name object. Another way I could think of off the top of my head is having a static Map in the Name class and when the constructor is called throwing an exception if the value passed in for name is already in use in another object, however I'm aware throwing exceptions in a constructor is generally a bad idea. Are there other ways of achieving this?

• Installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS

  On my laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 8.1. Felt I needed to see the competition for myself to establish which was a better OS. So I followed the channels to dual boot. All seemed fine and I accessed Ubuntu with no issues after selecting this from the menu to select the OS. I should add that the boot method was changed to legacy. However, since using Ubuntu, I no longer have the ability to select the OS. The laptop simply logs straight into Ubuntu. I therefore attempted to access the recovery options, only it appears the Windows 8 bootloader has somehow been corrupted as I am now told to use the Windows 8 recovery disc (which, as this was pre-installed - I do not have). Left with no other alternative, I have scoured these forums without success, and so I am hoping someone in the know (or who has experienced similar) can help. I have tried boot repair again without success. On rebooting I am only presented with a basic splash screen asking me to select Ubuntu, Memtest, Windows 8 Recovery or Windows 8 Bootloader (The bootloaders again require I insert the disc). LiveCD works but doesn't give me the options that I've seen here and as mentioned earlier, only boot recovery only gives me the options as mentioned earlier. Also this fails to load via USB (possibly because HDD comes before USB in the boot order?). • Sharing internet to Ubuntu 12.04 VMWare guest

  Got the 12.04 distro and installed this on my Mac VMWare Fusion (Version 4.1.2). Install went fine and Ubuntu seemed to update itself during the install. Rebooted and now I cannot get Ubuntu to access the internet via my Macs Ethernet connection (Connected to a router) Have tried settings the VMWare network adaptor to NAT or bridged and Host only without success. In Ubuntu I have the eth0 set to Automatic DHCP. VMWare tools is installed as well. I know next to nothing about what to do here and net searches on both Stackoverflow and Superuser sites are producing not results for me. Could someone please help? What to eventually have Ubuntu run in the background as a development web server running Zend Framework and CE Server edition but need thew internet access to run updates etc on Ubuntu. Any help would be really appreciated. TIA John

• Video crashes with 10.10

  I have installed both the 64bit and 32 bit versions of 10.10 on my Compaq Presario PC. I first installed the 64 bit version of the OS.The video often crashed when switching user. It also went haywire occasionally when I visited some web-sites. I read that there may be some problems with the 64 bit OS. So I installed the 32 bit version on another disk. This version seemed even less well behaved. HP's model number for the computer is SR1838NX. The hardware is listed at http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00628274&lang=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=1841793&prodTypeId=12454&printver=true#A0 I think the important info is that the chip set is "ATI Radeon Xpress 200" and the processor is "Athlon 64 (S) 3700+ 2.2 GHz" Has anyone else had video problems with similar machines? • McAfee Virus Scan and Oracle RAC

  Hi, We're experiencing a strange problem with Oracle RAC and McAfee anti-virus. As part of the installation of the Oracle RAC we disable anti virus as directed. We have had our RAC running fine, but when we came to re-enable the AV and reboot we got the BSOD. Abnormal Program Termination (BugCheck, STOP: 0x00000035 (0x8E984678, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS Following the standard process of raising this problem with Microsoft they identify the problem and also a fix. Microsoft talk about too many file filter drivers being present and pushing the DFS upper limit beyond the default size. Upping this value, as per msdn, has no impact. We're able to recover from this BSOD by disabling AV. We don't have the problem if we run the AV service manually whilst the system is up. However, if we make the service automatic we fail to boot. • Unable to specify abstract classes in TPH hierarchy in Entity Framework 4

  Hi I have a TPH heirachy along the lines of: A-B-C-D A-B-C-E A-F-G-H A-F-G-I I have A as Abstract, and all the other classes are concrete with a single discriminator column. This works fine, but I want C and G to be abstract also. If I do that, and remove their discriminators from the mapping, I get error 3034 'Two entities with different keys are mapped to the same row'. I cannot see how this statement can be correct, so I assume it's a bug in some way. Is it possible to do the above? Lee

• Unit Test to Run .sql script to SQL Create Database

  Can anyone point me in the direction of how I could get a NUnit test to run a .sql file to Create / Setup a database. I know about the the TestFixtureSetUp and TestFixtureTearDown attributes / methods in NUnit. So I KNOW how to call methods before and after all or each unit tests. I'm just unsure of how to load and execute the contents of a .sql file agains a SQL Server 2005 database programatically. Any examples? This is part of our TDD / CI. • VB.net 'cross-referencing' tables.

  Hello, I have a DataGridView that is being filled with data from a table. Inside this table is a column called 'group' that has the ID of an individual group in another table. What I would like to do, is when the DataGridView is filled, instead of showing the ID contained in 'group', I'd like it to display the name of the group. Is there some type of VB.net 'magic' that can do this, or do I need to cross-reference the data myself? • Continuous Integration with Oracle Products

  Hi, I'm currently working on a Datawarehouse project using an Oracle Database, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle Warehouse Builder and some Jython thrown in for good measure. All of which is held within TFS. My background is .net and prior to this project was seeing a lot of promise in CI. I'm not suggesting that the testing element of CI is feasible in this instance, but I would like to implement a stable deployment strategy. What I'm trying to understand is whether or not I can build some NANT scripts that will allow me to deploy ODI\OWB\Oracle DB code to any given environment at any point. Has anyone tried this before? Are there more appropriate tools out there that lends themselves better to this sort of toolset? Am I just a crazy horse to be evening contemplating this? Any view would be greatly appreciated. • Where Are the Release Versions of ASP.Net AJAX 4.0 Templating Files?

  I'm trying to get the production version of ASP.Net AJAX 4.0 Templating working and can't find the JavaScript files. With the beta version I needed to reference MicrosoftAjaxTemplates.js, MicrosoftAjaxAdoNet.js, and MicrosoftAjaxDataContext.js. I can get everything to work with the beta CDN versions (e.g. http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/beta/0911/MicrosoftAjaxTemplates.js). But for the life of me I can't find 1. The release CDN versions of these files or 2. Where to download the whole Release ASP.Net AJAX 4.0 JavaScript package. The files certainly are not listed on the ASP.Net AJAX 4.0 CDN at http://www.asp.net/ajaxlibrary/CDNAjax4.ashx. Maybe the files have been renamed? Theoretically this should be a rediculously easy question and I'm a little embarrased to even ask it on StackOverflow, but I've had no luck finding an answer on my own. • How do I improve the efficiency of the queries executed by this generic Linq-to-SQL data access clas

  Hi all, I have a class which provides generic access to LINQ to SQL entities, for example: class LinqProvider<T> //where T is a L2S entity class { DataContext context; public virtual IEnumerable<T> GetAll() { return context.GetTable<T>(); } public virtual T Single(Func<T, bool> condition) { return context.GetTable<T>().SingleOrDefault(condition); } } From the front end, both of these methods appear to work as you would expect. However, when I run a trace in SQL profiler, the Single method is executing what amounts to a SELECT * FROM [Table], and then returning the single entity that meets the given condition. Obviously this is inefficient, and is being caused by GetTable() returning all rows. My question is, how do I get the query executed by the Single() method to take the form SELECT * FROM [Table] WHERE [condition], rather than selecting all rows then filtering out all but one? Is it possible in this context? Any help appreciated, Lee

  Is the Windows 7 Home Premium sufficient for software development? Development would be in Visual Studio 2010. I'm on a budget so would rather purchase 'Home Premium' rather than 'Professional' or 'Ultimate'. The Microsoft site says there is next to nothing functionality wise between them that developers would miss. Can anyone confirm or deny? BTW. Does it come with a version of IIS? • What does Apache's "Require all granted" really do?

  I've just update my Apache server to Apache/2.4.6 which is running under Ubuntu 13.04. I used to have a vhost file that had the following: <Directory "/home/john/development/foobar/web"> AllowOverride All </Directory> But when I ran that I got a "Forbidden. You don't have permission to access /" After doing a little bit of googling I found out that to get my site working again I needed to add the following line "Require all granted" so that my vhost looked like this: <Directory "/home/john/development/foobar/web"> AllowOverride All Require all granted </Directory> I want to know if this is "safe" and does not bring in any security issues. I read on Apache's page that this "mimics the functionality the was previously provided by the 'Allow from all' and 'Deny from all' directives. This provider can take one of two arguments which are 'granted' or 'denied'. The following examples will grant or deny access to all requests." But it didn't say if this was a security issue of some sort or why we now have to do it when in the past you did not have to.

• How do I resolve "conflicting accounts" in google apps without breaking links to online photos on picasa?

  I have been using google apps for some time, and only recently learned I have what google calls "conflicting accounts" which is creating a problem I haven't been able to resolve. Turns out that the apps account really only covers email, google docs, and the calendar and not other features like picasa, blogger, youtube etc. and at some point they gave me a non-apps google account with my same (proprietary non-gmail) email address for the additional apps. This is the "conflicting account." I had noticed that I sometimes had to come in through another door when I went back and forth, between docs, picasa, and mail let's say, but never understood why since it was the same username and password and I didn't get any communication about it at the time. Google is now in the process of giving google apps users access to the additional apps and providing instructions for consolidating the two accounts. But if I want to move my picasa site into the new apps structure I have to download my albums and re-synch them. This would be disastrous for me as I have hundreds of photos embedded in my websites, and new web addresses would break all the connections. The alternative seems to be to rename my "personal" (non-apps) accounts as described at http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=185186: Users with conflicting Google Accounts can easily resolve their conflicts by renaming their personal Google Accounts, and the data in their personal accounts will remain safe and accessible to them. Here’s how a user can rename their personal Google Account: * Step 1: Visit www.google.com/accounts and sign in with your personal Google Account * Step 2: Click ‘Change email’ under ‘Personal Settings’ * Step 3: Enter a different email address where you can receive mail, enter your password, and click ‘Save email address’ * Step 4: Check your other email If your users don’t have different email addresses where they can receive mail, they can resolve the conflict by renaming their personal Google Accounts to @gmail.com addresses instead. Sounds easy enough, right? I gave them a gmail address. The wizard said "sorry you can't use a gmail account for this" --which contradicts the last paragraph above but ok, I switched to a new email address I just created for one of my domains. I can send email back and forth between this account and my google apps account with no problem. But when I try to use it as a replacement on the "personal" side I always get "The password you gave is incorrect." I have tried it over and over and know the password is correct. Since I like to get all my emails though one web interface I initially had the new email set up as an add-on to my google apps email account, but noting that the instructions said the "personal account" email could not be associated with any other gmail account I took it off and went back to accessing it via horde so there would be no conflict there, which seemed to make no difference. I can't figure out why it won't accept the password. Does anyone have any thoughts about that? or suggestions for another way to resolve my picasa problem? any help at all is greatly appreciated. • Query only the first detail record for each master record

  If I have the following master-detail relationship: owner_tbl auto_tbl --------- -------- owner --- owner auto year And I have the following table data: owner_tbl auto_tbl --------- -------- john john, corvette, 1968 john, prius, 2008 james james, f-150, 2004 james, cadillac, 2002 james, accord, 2009 jeff jeff, tesla, 2010 jeff, hyundai, 1996 Now, I want to perform a query that returns the following result: john, corvette, 1968 jeff, hyundai, 1996 james, cadillac, 2002 The query should join the two tables, and sort all the records on the "year" field, but only return the first detail record for each master record. I know how to join the tables and sort on the "year" field, but it's not clear how (or if) I might be able to only retrieve the first joined record for each owner. Three related questions: Can I perform this kind of query using LINQ-to-SQL? Can I perform the query using T-SQL? Would it be best to just create a stored procedure for the query given its likely complexity?

  So i have the following query Select id, [First], [Last] , [Business] as contactbusiness, (Case When ([Business] != '' or [Business] is not null) Then [Business] Else 'No Phone Number' END) from contacts The results look like id First Last contactbusiness (No column name) 2 John Smith 3 Sarah Jane 0411 111 222 0411 111 222 6 John Smith 0411 111 111 0411 111 111 8 NULL No Phone Number 11 Ryan B 08 9999 9999 08 9999 9999 14 David F NULL No Phone Number I'd expect record 2 to also show No Phone Number If i change the "[Business] is not null" to [Business] != null then i get the correct results id First Last contactbusiness (No column name) 2 John Smith No Phone Number 3 Sarah Jane 0411 111 222 0411 111 222 6 John Smith 0411 111 111 0411 111 111 8 NULL No Phone Number 11 Ryan B 08 9999 9999 08 9999 9999 14 David F NULL No Phone Number Normally you need to use is not null rather than != null. whats going on here?
