• Synthetic database records

  Assume we are getting some statistics from a customer which we analyse and we send our comments to the customer. Now, the customer tells us that the statistic they computed between January and March are based on a wrong methodology and sends us corrected series. We want perform analysis with the wrong and with the correct set of data, which are huge and only differ from January to March. Therefore, we need something like synthetic database records implementing the following logic: synthetic[1] = wrong_data synthetic[2] = correct_data between Januar and March, wrong_data otherwise With this, we can easily perform our analyses on synthetic records. Should such synthetic records be implemented in the application logic or on the side of the database? What are common pitfalls of such an implementation?

• managing a high traffic media sharing website

  i'm in the process of developing a website that i predict will generate a lot of traffic. the site will be similar to many other sites offering free media streaming: mp3's. we are going to start with a pretty minimal amount of media to share, but the basic idea is that artists will set up a profile page with music they have made available for consumers to visit the page and listen to the music. we are starting with just a handful of artists, but i think that this project will generate more and more artist pages. eventually i'd like to set it up so consumers can create personalized playlists. how can i best prepare server space and bandwidth capabilities? i have a small team of web designers and programmers working on the site, as i am pretty illiterate when it comes to site management. as the ring leader of this organization, i am more or less looking for financial requirements and monthly burn rate estimates. i don't have a ton of capitol to start with, putting together a business plan, but i am seeking investments. i have a game plan to grow fast enough to be successful, and slow enough to manage the financial growth requirements. any questions i may have failed to ask myself? is it realistic to start this project on a shared server, and upgrade? any financial advice you think i can use? i really appreciate any advice given, as this is my first business venture. thank you all in advance. • IIS 7 Application Pools using a different amount of memory on multiple servers behind a load balancer

  We have 6 servers in a web farm behind an F5. There are approximately 25 AppPools on each of these servers. On servers 1 - 5 the apppools are consuming approx 500MB Private Bytes, and 5GB Virtual Bytes. On server 6 the apppools are consuming approx 800MB Private Bytes, and 8GB Virtual Bytes. I can not seem to figure out why we have this difference. The code is the exact same on each box. We replicate the apphost.config between the boxes, so the Appplication Configs are identical. The only difference seems to be that this box consumes more RAM, and in turn ends up using a lot more CPU. During Black Friday we observed the CPU on server 6 spiking to 100% and noticed that the % Memory Commit was also near 100%, while the rest of the farm was at closer to 50% utilization. Pulling the 6th server from the load balancer dropped CPU/Memory on the 6th server back to normal, and did not cause a noticeable strain on the other servers.

  I have the same slideshow in the exact same folder (C:\Images) on two computers which are syncing their settings over the Microsoft account (mail and other settings synced normally), and I have independently configured them to display wallpaper slideshows from that folder. However, the "Synced Theme" in Personalise Desktop repeatedly resets to a static image. Is there a way to ensure the sync sticks?

  I have a boost::posix_time::ptime that points to March 31st 2010 like this: ptime p(date(2010, Mar, 31)); I would like to subtract a month (and possibly years) from this date. From the docs I see these two operators: ptime operator-(time_duration) and ptime operator-(days) but none of them can work with months/years. If I try and do: time_duration duration = hours(24 * 30); ptime pp = p - duration; I'm getting March 1st and if I'm trying: ptime pp = p - days(30); I'm still getting March 1st, while I'd like to get February 28th. How can I achieve my desired result? (I would like to get the desired result also when subtracting a month from March 28, 29, 30)

• Graph Theory: How to compute closeness centrality for each node in a set of data?

  I'd like to learn how to apply network theory to my own cache of relational data. I'm trying to build a demo of a new way of browsing a music library, using network theory, that I think would make for a very intuitive and useful way of finding the right song at any given time. I have all the data (artists as nodes, similarity from 0 to 1 between each artist and those it is related to) and I can already program, but I don't know how to actually calculate the centrality of a node from that. I've spent a while trying to email different professors at my school but no one seems to know where I can learn this. I hope someone's done something similar. Thanks in advance you guys! ~Jordan

• How do I properly embed third-party frameworks in my Cocoa application?

  I am writing a Cocoa application that makes use of the ParseKit framework (http://www.parsekit.com/). I've included the Framework in the proper folder, added a Copy Files build phase, and added it to the build phase. I can build and launch the application on my Mac. However, when I try to run it on another Mac, it crashes. The Console shows the following error message: dyld: Library not loaded: /Users/Jordan/Files/ParseKit/build/Debug/ParseKit.framework/Versions/A/ParseKit It looks like when the app launches, it is looking for the framework on my local drive. However, the framework is in the Copy Files build phase, so it has been copied into that application's Contents/Frameworks folder. If if the application were looking in this folder, it would be able to load the framework just fine, but for some reason it's looking for it on my local drive on the original Mac (which obviously doesn't exist on the other Mac). What am I doing wrong?

• Update/Increment a single column on multiple rows at once

  I'm trying to add rows to a column, keeping the order of the newest column set to one, and all other rows counting up from there. In this case, I add a new row with order=0, then use this query to update all the rows by one. "UPDATE favorits SET order = order+1" However, what happens is that all the rows are updated to the same value. I get a stack of favorites, all with order 6 for example, when it should be one with 1, the next with 2 and so on. How do I update these rows in a way that orders them the way they should be? • Exception when ASP.NET attempts to delete network file.

  Greetings - I've got an ASP.NET application that is trying to delete a file on a network share. The ASP.NET application's worker process is running under a domain account (confirmed this by looking in TaskManager and by using ShowContexts2.aspx¹). I've been assured by the network admins that the process account is a member of a group that has Modify permissions to the directory that contains the file I'm trying to delete. However, it is unable to do so, and instead I get an exception (changed the file path to all x's): System.Web.HttpUnhandledException: Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. --- System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path '\xxxxxxx\xxxxxxx\xxxxxxx\xxxxxx.xxx' is denied.
