  • Rename Devices in Device Manager

    This is mostly just for the USB ports, as I recognize everything else in computers.... Anyways, is there a way to rename, or otherwise, identify which USB port (or other hardware for that matter) is which device in Device Manager? I know I can plug in a flash drive, then see what port it is connected with, and find out that way. What I would like though, is to find out that a certain plug is always a certain device in Device Manager. If I can then have a system in mind that always has the same order, I can look and see if a USB port is not being detected or not working properly, and as I uninstall/reinstall USB devices, I know I won't lose my keyboard or mouse, for example.   • Custom layout/group switching keys in Linux

    I'm using Ubuntu (Karmic) and 2 keyboard layouts. Using the gnome settings, I managed to set it to switch with Alt+Shift (windows style), but I really want to limit it to Right Alt + Right Shift, but that option isn't available in the gnome wizard. I've opened gconf-editor and found the kbd configuration, but trying to add 'r' or 'right_' prefixes to the keys didn't help. Is this possible?

  • Why does my layout repeats in device but looks fine on emulator when an image is added in a Relative Layout?

    let me try to explain clearly with what I want here. I have a RelativeLayout that contains a header image and the content below it. Now, when i have a header image and a list view below it, the page fits the screen in the device properly, the layout does not repeat. But when I place an image below the header image, the layout repeats in the device. Meaning i could see 2 header images in the device. Some page, I could see half of the header image that is not supposed to be there (repeated header image). However, in emulator, all the pages looks fine and fit the screen nicely. I tried changing to LinearLayout, RelativeLayout inside LinearLayout, Relative Layout, it gave me the same outcome. I hope someone could tell me why this happened. Thanks.     I am trying to create a landscape and portrait mode only for tablets. For portrait mode I added the files under layout-xlarge and for landscape in tablets I added files under layout-xlarge-land, but just to test if its working I tried switching the background color under landscape to green, but it didnt seem to work. Is there anything else I need to alter for code to recognize landscape mode for tablets?

  • JPanel's child components paint/layout problem

    I'm having a problem that when my frame is shown (after a login dialog) the buttons are not on correct position, then in some miliseconds they go to the right position (the center of the panel with border layout). When I make a SSCCE, it works correct, but when I run my whole code I have this fast-miliseconds delay to the buttons to go to the correct place. Unfortunately, I can't post the whole code, but the method that shows the frame is: public void login(JComponent userView) { centerPanel.removeAll(); centerPanel.add(userView); centerPanel.revalidate(); centerPanel.repaint(); frame.setVisible(true); } What would cause this delay to the panel layout? But this don't answer the question, I still think Java Swing is creating new threads for make the layout behind the scenes.

    I can select language, (I wanted English), but I wanted to select "international (with dead tilde)" and I cannot find an option to do it unlike Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Usually, in previous editions, before unity, there were two columns ... one for selecting language and other to select the kind of layout and there was a box so you can test the keyboard. Now, there is only one column and I need the dead tilde. How can I do it? Why is Ubuntu hiding these options? Thanks

  • Make Network Manager use bridge for PPPoE instead of only working on ethernet?

    My ISP uses PPPoE on their DSL connections. I use Network Manager to connect to this using a bridged modem connected to eth0. Often, I want to test networking things, so a set myself up a KVM machine with a tap interface. I can then connect these interfaces to to virtual 'switches' by adding them to bridges. (I work for my ISP). Sometimes, I want to test cases where the PPPoE is connected more than once. For this, I would like to be able to add eth0 to my 'switch' (a bridge) so the VMs can have a 'bridged modem' connection to the internet. But I would like to still be able to run the PPPoE for my computer at the same time. Which means that I need to get network-manager to run PPPoE over the bridge (or eth0). The problem is that it considers eth0 (and the bridge) 'not managed' by network manager, so it refuses to use it. So, how can I have network manager dial PPPoE over a bridge?

    I want to replace gnome-terminal fully by lxterminal. I've started by changing the default terminal emulator. So I ran sudo update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator, and chose lxterminal. After that, I ran dconf-editor and went to org - gnome - desktop - applications - terminal and changed gnome-terminal to lxterminal and removed the -x in the exec arg part. The only problem though, is that by default, lxterminal doesn't look like gnome-terminal. What are gnome-terminal's default layout settings? I'm especially looking for the hexadecimal colour codes for both text and background.

  • How to prevent Network Manager from auto creating network connection profiles with "available to everyone" by default

    We have several laptops at work which use Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. I have our Wifi Access Point requiring WPA2-EAP Authentication (backed by a LDAP server). I have the staff using these laptops when doing presentations by using the Guest Account. So by default when you have a wifi card, network manager will display available Wireless Access Points. So the logical course of action for a Novice(tm) user is to single left click the easy to use option in the Network Manager drop down list... At this point the Staff Member (who is logged in with the guest account) expects to just be able to connect and enter any authentication details if required. But because they are using the Guest account, they won't ever have admin permissions (nor do I want them to), and so PolKit kicks in with a request for admin authorisation. I solved this part by modifying the PolKit permissions required to allow all users to create System Network Connections... However, because these Staff members are logging onto the Wifi Access Point with Ldap Credentials and because the Network Manager is now saving those credentials as a System Connection, their password is available for the next guest user session (because system connection profiles are stored in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections.d/* ). It creates system connections by default because "Available to all users" is ticked by default when you quickly connect to a new wifi access point. I want Network Manager to not tick this by default. This way I can revert the changes I made to Polkit and users network connection profiles will be purged when they log out.
