  • Ops Center 12c - Update - Provisioning Solaris on x86 Using a Card-Based NIC

    Last week, I posted a blog describing how to use Ops Center to provision Solaris over the network via a NIC on a card rather than the built-in NIC.  Really, that was all about how to install Solaris on a SPARC system.  This week, we'll look at how to do the same thing for an x86-based server. Really, the overall process is exactly the same, at least for Solaris 11, with only minor updates. We will focus on Solaris 11 for this blog.  Once I verify that the same approach works for Solaris 10, I will provide another update. Booting Solaris 11 on x86 Just as before, in order to configure the server for network boot across a card-based NIC, it is necessary to declare the asset to associate the additional MACs with the server.  You likely will need to access the server console via the ILOM to figure out the MAC and to get a good idea of the network instance number.  The simplest way to find both of these is to start a network boot using the desired NIC and see where it appears in the list of network interfaces and what MAC is used when it tries to boot.  Go to the ILOM for the server.  Reset the server and start the console.  When the BIOS loads, select the boot menu, usually with Ctrl-P.  This will give you a menu of devices to boot from, including all of the NICs.  Select the NIC you want to boot from.  Its position in the list is a good indication of what network number Solaris will give the device. In this case, we want to boot from the 5th interface (GB_4, net4).  Pick it and start the boot processes.  When it starts to boot, you will see the MAC address for the interface Once you have the network instance and the MAC, go through the same process of declaring the asset as in the SPARC case.  This associates the additional network interface with the server.. Creating an OS Provisioning Plan The simplest way to do the boot via an alternate interface on an x86 system is to do a manual boot.  Update the OS provisioning profile as in the SPARC case to reflect the fact that we are booting from a different interface.  Update, in this case, the network boot device to be GB_4/net4, or the device corresponding to your network instance number.  Configure the profile to support manual network boot by checking the box for manual boot in the OS Provisioning profile. Booting the System Once you have created a profile and plan to support booting from the additional NIC, we are ready to install the server. Again, from the ILOM, reset the system and start the console.  When the BIOS loads, select boot from the Boot Menu as above.  Select the network interface from the list as before and start the boot process.  When the grub bootloader loads, the default boot image is the Solaris Text Installer.  On the grub menu, select Automated Installer and Ops Center takes over from there. Lessons The key lesson from all of this is that Ops Center is a valuable tool for provisioning servers whether they are connected via built-in network interfaces or via high-speed NICs on cards.  This is great news for modern datacenters using converged network infrastructures.  The process works for both SPARC and x86 Solaris installations.  And it's easy and repeatable.

  • Experience migrating legacy Cobol/PL1 to Java

    ORIGINAL Q: I'm wondering if anyone has had experience of migrating a large Cobol/PL1 codebase to Java? How automated was the process and how maintainable was the output? How did the move from transactional to OO work out? Any lessons learned along the way or resources/white papers that may be of benefit would be appreciated. EDIT 7/7: Certainly the NACA approach is interesting, the ability to continue making your BAU changes to the COBOL code right up to the point of releasing the JAVA version has merit for any organization. The argument for procedural Java in the same layout as the COBOL to give the coders a sense of comfort while familiarizing with the Java language is a valid argument for a large organisation with a large code base. As @Didier points out the $3mil annual saving gives scope for generous padding on any BAU changes going forward to refactor the code on an ongoing basis. As he puts it if you care about your people you find a way to keep them happy while gradually challenging them. The problem as I see it with the suggestion from @duffymo to Best to try and really understand the problem at its roots and re-express it as an object-oriented system is that if you have any BAU changes ongoing then during the LONG project lifetime of coding your new OO system you end up coding & testing changes on the double. That is a major benefit of the NACA approach. I've had some experience of migrating Client-Server applications to a web implementation and this was one of the major issues we encountered, constantly shifting requirements due to BAU changes. It made PM & scheduling a real challenge. Thanks to @hhafez who's experience is nicely put as "similar but slightly different" and has had a reasonably satisfactory experience of an automatic code migration from Ada to Java.   • PHP unit tests for controller returns no errors and no success message.

    I'm using the zend modular director structure, i.e. application modules users controllers . . lessons reports blog I have a unit test for a controller in 'blog' that goes something like the below section of code: I'm definitely doing something very wrong, or missing something - as when i run the test, i get no error, no success message (that goes usually like ...OK (2 tests, 2 assertions)). I get all the text from layout.phtml, where i have the global site layout. This is my first endeavor writing a unittest for zend-M-V-C structure so probably I'm missing something important?   • learning to type - tips for programmers?

    After hunting and pecking for about 35 years, I have decided to learn to type. I am learning QWERTY and have learned about 2/3 of the letters so far. While learning, I have noticed how asymmeterical the keyboard is, which really bothers me. (I will probably switch to a symmetrical keyboard eventually, but for now am trying to do everything as standard and "correct" as possible.) Although I am not there yet in my lessons, it seems that many of the keys I am going to use as a C# web developer are supposed to be typed by the pinky of my right hand. Are there any typing patterns you have developed that are more ergonomic (or faster) when typing large volumes of code rife with braces, colons, semi-colons and quotes? Or, should I just accept the fact that every other key is going to be hit with my right pinky? It is not that speed is such a huge concern, as much as that it seems so inefficient to rely on one finger so much... As an example, some of the conventions I use as a hunt and pecker, like typing open and close braces right away with my index and middle finger, and then hitting the left arrow key to fill in the inner content, don't seem to work as well with just a pinky. What are some typing patterns using a standard QWERTY keyboard that work really well for you as a programmer?

  • Usage of static analysis tools - with Clear Case/Quest

    We are in the process of defining our software development process and wanted to get some feed back from the group about this topic. Our team is spread out - US, Canada and India - and I would like to put into place some simple standard rules that all teams will apply to their code. We make use of Clear Case/Quest and RAD I have been looking at PMD, CPP, checkstyle and FindBugs as a start. My thought is to just put these into ANT and have the developers run these manually. I realize doing this you have to have some trust in that each developer will do this. The other thought is to add in some builders in to the IDE which would run a subset of the rules (keep the build process light) and then add another set (heavy) when they check in the code. Some other ideals is to make use of something like Cruse Control and have it set up to run these static analysis tools along with the unit test when ever Clear Case/Quest is idle. Wondering if others have done this and if it was successfully or can provide lessons learned.

  • Personal Cache vs Memcache?

    I have a personal caching class, which can be seen here ( based off WordPress' ): http://pastie.org/988427 I recently learned about memcache and it said to memcache EVERYTHING: http://highscalability.com/blog/2010/5/17/7-lessons-learned-while-building-reddit-to-270-million-page.html My first thought was just to keep my class with the current functions and make it use memcache instead -- is there any downside to doing this? The main difference I see is that memcache stays on with the server from page to page, while mine is for 1 page load. The problem I see arising, and this is with any system, is that they're dynamic. They change all the time. Whether its search results, visible products, etc. etc. If it's all cached, won't the create a problem? Is there a way to handle this? Obviously if something is bringing back the same results everytime it would be cached, but that's why I was doing it on a per page load basis. I'm sure there is a way to handle this, or is the cache time usually set between 5 minutes and an hour?

Update: US layout and I use home row Update 2: Despite my best efforts to the contrary, people are interpreting this questionas "how do I learn to type" or "what keyboard should I use". Take it as a given, that I will learn to type, and that I will be doing so on a standard QWERTY layout keyboard, not DVORAK. I am interested in aquiring a skill that will be useful wherever I go.

  • What are the worst examples of moral failure in the history of software engineering?

    Many computer science curricula include a class or at least a lecture on disasters caused by software bugs, such as the Therac-25 incidents or Ariane 5 Flight 501. Indeed, Wikipedia has a list of software bugs with serious consequences, and a question on StackOverflow addresses some of them too. We study the failures of the past so that we don't repeat them, and I believe that rather than ignoring them or excusing them, it's important to look at these failures squarely and remind ourselves exactly how the mistakes made by people in our profession cost real money and real lives. By studying failures caused by uncaught bugs and bad process, we learn certain lessons about rigorous testing and accountability, and we make sure that our innocent mistakes are caught before they cause major problems. There are kinds of less innocent failure in software engineering, however, and I think it's just as important to study the serious consequences caused by programmers motivated by malice, greed, or just plain amorality. Thus we can learn about the ethical questions that arise in our profession, and how to respond when we are faced with them ourselves. Unfortunately, it's much harder to find lists of these failures--the only one I can come up with is that apocryphal "DOS ain't done 'til Lotus won't run" story.   • When is a good time to start thinking about scaling?

    I've been designing a site over the past couple days, and been doing some research into different aspects of scaling a site horizontally. If things go as planned, in a few months (years?) I know I'd need to worry about scaling the site up and out, since the resources it would end up consuming would be huge. So, this got me to thinking, when is the best time to start thinking about, and designing for, scalability? If you start too early on, you could easily over complicate your design, and make it impossible to actually build. You could also get too caught up in the details, the architecture, whatever, and wind up getting nothing done. Also, if you do get it working, but the site never takes off, you may have wasted a good chunk of extra effort. On the other hand, you could be saving yourself a ton of effort down the road. Designing it from the ground up to be big would make it much easier later on to let it grow big, with very little rewriting going on. I know for what I'm working on, I've decided to make at least a few choices now on the side of scaling, but I'm not going to do a complete change of thinking to get it to scale completely. Notably, I've redesigned my database from a conventional relational design to one similar to what was suggested on the Reddit site linked below, and I'm going to give memcache a try. So, the basic question, when is a good time to start thinking or worrying about scaling, and what are some good designs, tips, etc. for when doing so?   • Assistance with Lua functions

    As noted before, I'm relatively new to lua, but again, I learn quick. The last time I got help here, it helped me immensely, and I was able to write a better script. Now I've come to another question that I think will make my life a bit easier. I have no clue what I'm doing with functions, but I'm hoping there is a way to do what I want to do here. Below, you'll see an example of code I have to do to strip down some unneeded elements. Yeah, I realize it's not efficient in the least, so if anyone else has a better idea of how to make it much more efficient, I'm all ears. What I would like to do is create a function with it so that I can strip down whatever variable with a simple call of it (like stripdown(winds)). I appreciate any help that is offered, and any lessons given.     Hello all, I want to bind the Height property of the RichTextBox to the Height Property of the GridViews Row. How can I do that?   • For business people to manage, keep binary images in MySQL or just the urls?

    Hello everyone: I am working on a task to enable image uploading and auto-scaling(from full sized to thumbnail) by jQuery & PHP. I can naturally come up with two approaches : First, store both images as binary objects directly into MySQL; Second, store only urls to the images and keep the images somewhere on server. The images are for everyone to view, so there are no security restrictions, as far as I know. Personally I don't have any preference, however, at the end of the day, it is the business people that are going to manage the images as part of the system(CRUD). So I am wondering which seems to be a bit better for them? Of course I am building a easy-to-use, visualize web interface for the staff to control the process, but I am not sure if that is enough. Lessons told me that if I don't think for the future and seek the most flexible approach, the I will probably screw myself sooner or later. PS. I need it because the service has a warm up stage, which takes some time to build up stuff from DB and only after it is ready it can start serving requests ... I was thinking to deploy to Tomcat context paths like: "/ServiceA-1.0", "/ServiceA-2.0" and then have a "virtual" context like "/ServiceA" which will point to the desired physical service e.g. "/ServiceA-1.0". So external world will know about ServiceA, but internally, my ServiceA related stack would know about versioned ServiceA url ( there are more components involved but only ServiceA is serving outer world ). When new service is ready, I would just reconfigure the "virtual" context to point to a new service. So far, I was not able to find out how to do this with Tomcat and starting to tkink it is not possible. I found suggestions to place Apache Server in front of Tomcat and do the routing there, but I do not want to enroll another piece of software unless necessary. My questions are: - is this kind of a "virtual" context and routing possible to do with Tomcat? - any other options, wisdom and lessons learned how to achieve this kind of service swapping scenario?   • SQL Saturday #44 Huntington Beach Recap

    What a great day. It was long and tiring, but rewarding in so many ways. On Sunday morning, I was driving home and I decided to take the Pacific Coast Highway from Huntington Beach.  It was a great chance to exhale and just enjoy the sun and smells of the beach (I really love SoCal sometimes). And for future reference for all you speakers, the beach and ocean are only 5 minutes from the SQL Saturday location.  I just could help noticing also the shocking number of high priced cars on the road (4 Bentleys, 3 Ferraris, 1 Aston Martins, 3 Maserati, 1 Rolls Royce, and 2 Lamborghinis).  It made me think about this: Price of all those cars: $ 150,000+.  Impacting the ability of people to learn: Priceless.  We have positively impacted the education, knowledge, capabilities of not only our attendees, but also all of their companies and people they might help as well.  That is just staggering and something to be immensely proud of. To all of my fellow community leaders, I salute you. So lets talk about the event Overall We had over 220 people register for the event and had 180+ people attend the event. I was shooting for the magical 200 number, but I guess it just gives us more motivation to make it even bigger and better next time. We had a few snags along the way, but what event doesnt, but I think everything turned out great. I did not hear any negative comments and heard lots of positive comments along with people asking when the next one is going to be (More on that later). Location- Golden West College We could not have asked for a better partner for the event. Herb Cohen from Golden West College was the wizard behind the curtains. From the beginning, he was our advocate to the GWC Board and was instrumental in getting our event approved. The day off, Herb was a HUGE help getting any and all logistics that we needed taken care of. In the craziness of the early morning registration crush it was a big help knowing that he and Bret Stateham (Blog | Twitter) were taking care of testing projectors in all the rooms. Anything we needed he was there and was even proactive in getting some things that I had not even thought of (i.e. a dumpster for all of our garbage). I cannot thank Herb enough along with other members of the GWC staff including Minnie Higgins of the Career and Technical Education Division office, Jack Taylor, public safety, and Ron Pryor, Tech Services Support. And last, but not least, the Wireless on campus was absolutely FANTASTIC! Some lessons learned Unless you are a glutton for punishment, as I no doubt am, you most certainly want to give yourself more than six weeks to plan the event. I am lucky that I have a very understanding wife and had a wonderful set of co-coordinators helping me out. A big thanks goes out to Phil, Marlon (Blog | Twitter), Nitin (Twitter), Thomas (Blog | Twitter), Bret (Blog | Twitter), Ben, and Laurie.
