  • Empty UIView with minimal drawRect: overhead

    Hi, I have an application that has three nested views that are mechanically important, but have no visual elements: A vanila UIView that doesn't have any content of its own, and is simply used as a host for CALayers. A UIScrollView (that is queried for it's origin and used to position CALayers in 3d: I really only use this view to faithfully replicate the scroll view's "mechanics"), The scroll view's contents: a UIView subclass. It simply picks up touch events and passes them to a delegate - all that is important are its UIResponder machinery. The UIView hosting CALayers is a sibling of a UIImageView that is a background image over which the CALayers are drawn. I'd really like to ensure that none of these empty UIViews have any drawing or compositing overhead (in time, or storage) associated with them, or if that's not possible, to get this overhead as small as possible, and to understand it so that I can perhaps decide if I should try a different approach. In interface builder, I've set all of the views to not clear their context before drawing. I've not set them to be opaque though, because they definitely are not opaque - they are completely transparent. I've found that I need to give the scroll view contents a transparent clear colour (again in IB by setting the background colour's opacity to zero), and this suggests that it is being drawn, which I don't want. So, in short, I've not got much idea of what is and isn't getting drawn (anyone know of a tool like Quartz Debug for iPhone / simulator?), or how to go about stopping things from getting drawn. I use special codes to define inputing smileys in the text. I want to count only the length of the text ignoring special code.   • Looking for fast, minimal, preferrably free disc cloning software [closed]

    We have to test our application installation and functionality on many Windows operating system versions and languages (XP, Vista, Win7; English, Spanish, Portuguese, etc; 32-bit & b4-bit.) While we can do much of this in virtual machines, we have noticed that VM's sometimes hide problems, or raise false bugs. So, we need to do "bare metal" OS installation for much of our testing. I have been using Acronis True Image for the past year, and am not impressed. It often gives random errors which require a reboot, and is really slow. For example, when trying to restore an image, it goes through a "Locking partition" cycle about three times (once after you click OK on each step of the wizard), each of which can take 5 minutes to complete. This all happens BEFORE it actually starts the image copy, which is sometimes quick (3-5 minutes), sometimes long (hours). The size of all of our images are roughly the same, so that is not related. So, anyway, I'm looking to switch to something else: I only need very basic functionality--just creating images of entire discs, and then restoring those images onto the exact same hard drive at a later date. That's it. I'm not opposed to paying for a good piece of software, but if there is something free out there that does the job well, that would be a preference. My OS on which the imaging software would run is Windows Vista, but a bootable media (into a Linux flavor) would be fine also, as long as its quick to use and reliable. Recommendations? (Also, moderators, if this should be a CW, I'll be happy to mark it as such; unclear about the rules there.)

  • Minimal assembler program for CP/M 3.1 (z80)

    I seem to be losing the battle against my stupidity. This site explains the system calls under various versions of CP/M. However, when I try to use call 2 (C_WRITE, console output), nothing much happens. I have the following code. ORG 100h LD E,'a' LD C,2 CALL 5 CALL 0 I recite this here from memory. If there are typos, rest assured they were not in the original since the file did compile and I had a COM file to start. I am thinking the lines mean the following: Make sure this gets loaded at address 100h (0h to FFh being the zero page). Load ASCII 'a' into E register for system call 2. Load integer 2 into C register for system call 2. Make system call (JMP to system call is at address 5 in zero page). End program (Exit command is at address 0 in zero page). The program starts and exits with no problems. If I remove the last command, it hangs the computer (which I guess is also expected and shows that CALL 0 works). However, it does not print the ASCII character. (But it does print an extra new line, but the system might have done that.) How can I get my CP/M program to do what the system call is supposed to do? What am I doing wrong?

    I have an application, written in Python, which is used by a fairly technical audience (scientists). I'm looking for a good way to make the application extensible by the users, i.e. a scripting/plugin architecture. I am looking for something extremely lightweight. Most scripts, or plugins, are not going to be developed and distributed by a third-party and installed, but are going to be something whipped up by a user in a few minutes to automate a repeating task, add support for a file format, etc. So plugins should have the absolute minimum boilerplate code, and require no 'installation' other than copying to a folder (so something like setuptools entry points, or the Zope plugin architecture seems like too much.) Are there any systems like this already out there, or any projects that implement a similar scheme that I should look at for ideas / inspiration?

    Let's suppose I want to "protect" this code about being used without attribution, patenting it, or through any open source licence... #include<stdio.h> int main (void) { int version=2; printf("\r\n.Hello world, ver:(%d).", version); return 0; } It's a little obvious or just a language definition example.. When a source stop being "trivial, banal, commonplace, obvious", and start to be something that you may claim "rights"? Perhaps it depends on who read it, something that could be great geniality for someone that have never programmed, could be just obvious for an expert. It's easy when watching two sources there are 10000 same lines of code, that's a theft.. but that's not always so obvious. How to measure amount of "ownness", it's about creativity? line numbers? complexity? I can't imagine objetive answers for that, only some patches. For example perhaps the complexity, It's not fair to replace "years of engeneering" with "copy and paste". But is there any objetive index for objetive determination of this subject? (In a funny way I imagine this criterion: If the licence is longer than the code, then there is no owner, just to punish not caring storage space and world resources =P)

  • Minimal files to run a fully-functional PostgreSQL in Windows

    I would like to bundle PostgreSQL into my application. I downloaded the PostgreSQL 9 beta zip without the installer. After extraction, there are 8 directories. I found out that at least the following directories are required to run PostgreSQL properly, at least under my experiments. bin lib share The question is, are the above three directories really sufficient to run a fullly functional PostgreSQL? Do I need the 'include' and 'symbols' directories? Also, can I remove 'share\locale' if I don't use these locales?

    They seem to open in an internet explorer type window, does anyone know: How long have HTA files been around? Have they been around since Windows 98? Do they rely on Internet Explorer being installed, and/or a certain version of it? If you choose another browser on the browser selection screen update for Windows 7, will HTA files still work? Do HTA files open on other browsers? Are HTA files windows-only? There is a huge lack of documentation on google about HTA files, so it's tricky to work out. I need to present the client with a list of minimum requirements to ensure our HTA content CD will work.

Here are the requirements: HTML front end (best if it's cross-browser friendly) Web deployable, but also ideally want to be able to install as standalone on a desktop SQL Server database Ideally, would like to use a good (and easy) AJAX toolkit with widgets Ideally, would like to be able to write in ASP.Net but later (or concurrently) also write in Java. This is a big concern, as I would like to not have to rewrite the whole thing. Is there a toolkit I can use that makes this cross-platform requirement easier?     I am building a framework that will validate forms both client-side (javascript) and server-side based on a form requirements specification written in json. The purpose is to get rid of logically equivalent code on the server and client to make the code more maintainable, faster to write, and less buggy.   • Warn user of .NET Framework requirements

    So I have an app (tool) that uses .NET 3.0. When run on a machine that only has .NET 2.0 (like the default Server 2008 R2 install) it crashes miserably. What I've seen so far is that people are using a shunt that will first check the .NET version. Is there a way to build it or add some manifest somehow so that the user is warned of this problem (and hopefully be prompted to install .NET)? I know this can be solved by an installer, but I have requirements that need it to be a standalone executable.

    I'm new to stack overflow, made a few responses. I responded to a question that was something like: "I need to do X, I found a sed one liner that almost does it, but not quite" And was tagged 'sed'. I assumed the user just wanted a solution and tagged it with sed because it was a possible answer. So I suggested an alternate way using another tool that was more concise and didn't involve regex (another one-liner). I received a down vote for not meeting the requirement of the user. Since I'd like to make sure I conform to good forum etiquette, my question is: Are tags considered hard requirements that should limit the scope of responses? (within reason of course, a .NET question with a .NET tag obviously shouldn't receive a ruby answer).

  • Should I use formal methods on my software project?

    Our client wants us to build a web-based, rich internet application for gathering software requirements. Basically it's a web-based case tool that follows a specific process for getting requirements from stakeholders. I'm the project manager and we're still in the early phases of the project. I've been thinking about using formal methods to help clarify the requirements for the tool for both my client and the developers. By formal methods I mean some form of modeling, possibly something mathematically-based. Some of the things I've read about and are considering include Z (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_notation), state machines, UML 2.0 (possibly with extensions such as OCL), Petri nets, and some coding-level stuff like contracts and pre and post conditions. Is there anything else I should consider? The developers are experienced but depending on the formalism used they may have to learn some math. I'm trying to determine whether it's worth while for me to use formal methods on this project and if so, to what extent. I know "it depends" so the most helpful answers for me is a yes/no and supporting arguments. Would you use formal methods if you were on this project?

    I am trying to build a minimal vmware image to use for private browsing (also called a browser appliance). I have tried using images for other small linux distros, most of them are either too heavy (I do not want any other functionality than browsing and downloading) or outdated (DSL, various browser appliance images at vmware official site). I have downloaded the minimal Ubuntu install image (12MB) and was hoping to select only the needed pakcages while installing but it was not asking for my choices anywhere. I am new to the command line installation and I would be thankful if someone could point out how to install only needed packages, and what are the bare-minimum packages to browse internet (I plan to use only firefox and transmission)
