  • Is it worth learning Perl 6?

    - by Andres
    I have the opportunity to take a two day class on Perl 6 with the Rakudo Compiler. I don't want to start a religious war, but is it worth my time? Is there any reason to believe that Perl 6 will be practical in the real world within the next two years? Does anyone currently use it effectively? Update I took the class and learned a lot. However, after day 1, my mind was a bit overwhelmed. There are tons of cool ideas in perl 6, and it will be neat to see what filters up to other languages. Overall the experience was a positive use of my time, though I wasn't able to absorb as much on the second day. If it were a three day class it would have been unproductive just because there is a limit to how much you can process in a short amount of time.

  • Perl graph garbage collection usage

    - by Kevin
    Hi, I have built a tiny application in Perl that displays a graph over time. It graphs garbage collection usage over time. I use gnuplot to display the actual graph. This works fine if the time period is short, like a few hours. However, as the time increases (say a few days), the graph becomes difficult to read as the information gets crammed. Note that there is a tool called gcviewer which performs a similar function, it works by allowing you to choose the percentage of the graph. http://www.tagtraum.com/gcviewer.html Ideally I would like to take this further by adding the ability to "move" within the graph. I am not a developer but am good at scripting, so if there is some module in Perl which would provide this functionality it would be excellent! However, if it cannot be done in Perl, I am not averse to learning a new technology. Inputs are highly appreciated. Thanks!

  • What is Perl's equivalent to awk's /text/,/END/ ?

    - by kSiR
    I am looking to replace a nasty shell script that uses awk to trim down some HTML. The problem is I cannot find anything in Perl that does the aforementioned function awk '/<TABLE\ WIDTH\=\"100\%\" BORDER\=1\ CELLSPACING\=0><TR\ class\=\"tabhead\"><TH>State<\/TH>/,/END/' How can I do this in Perl? the expected output would be <TABLE WIDTH="100%" BORDER=1 CELLSPACING=0><TR class="tabhead"><TH>State</TH> The Perl flipflop operator gives me WAY more. (Everything between the asterisks is junk) *<h2>Browse Monitors (1 out of 497)</h2><br><font size="-1" style="font-weight:normal"> Use the <A HREF=/SiteScope/cgi/go.exe/SiteScope?page=monitorSummary&account=login15 >Monitor Description Report</a> to view current monitor configuration settings.</font>*<TABLE WIDTH="100%" BORDER=1 CELLSPACING=0><TR class="tabhead"><TH>State</TH>

I have installed all the required perl modules on my test platform and created an application called myweb. Also, I am going through the catalyst documents to reach my goal but nothing helpful yet. Is Catalyst helpful to display images/graphs on web? How to use my existing cgi/perl scritps with Catalyst? Any example would be really appreciated.

  • Perl redirect to PHP page

    - by sea_1987
    Hi There, I am working with a site that uses an outside source to work with payment transactions, one of the prerequisites is that on success a CGI script is called. What I am wanting to know is it possible to do a redirect to a PHP page with the CGI script and have the PHP detect that it has been loaded via a Perl redirect, I currently have this is in my perl. #!/usr/bin/perl # # fixedredir.cgi use strict; use warnings; my $URL = "http://www.example.com/"; Location: $URL;

  • Perl, evaluate string lazily

    - by Mike
    Consider the following Perl code. #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; use warnings; $b="1"; my $a="${b}"; $b="2"; print $a; The script obviously outputs 1. I would like it to be whatever the current value of $b is. What would be the smartest way in Perl to achieve lazy evaluation like this? I would like the ${b} to remain "unreplaced" until $a is needed.

  • How can I implement Unix grep in Perl?

    - by Ankit Rathod
    How can I implement grep of Unix in Perl? I tried to use Perl's built-in grep. Here is the code which is not working: $pattern = @ARGV[0]; $file= @ARGV[1]; open($fp,$file); @arr = <$fp>; @lines = grep $pattern, @arr; close($fp); print @lines; And by the way, i am trying only basic grep functionality not full featured and secondly i don't want to do string parsing myself. I want to use inbuilt grep or some function of Perl. Thanks in advance :)

  • Convert perl one-liner into a script

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
    I find alot of perl one-liners online. Sometimes I want to convert these one-liners into a script, because otherwise I'll forget the syntax of the one-liner. For example, I'm using the following command (from nagios.com): tail -f /var/log/nagios/nagios.log | perl -pe 's/(\d+)/localtime/e' I'd to replace it with something like this: tail -f /var/log/nagios/nagios.log | ~/bin/nagiostime.pl However, I can't figure out the best way to quickly throw this stuff into a script. Does anyone have a quick way to throw these one-liners into a Bash or Perl script?

  • Compiling PAR for Perl under Windows

    - by lngo
    I've downloaded PAR from http://par.perl.org/wiki/Main_Page and compiled it after reading the README file. I've used dmake-4.12-20090907 instead of nmake ('cause 1.5 does not work) from http://search.cpan.org/dist/dmake/. No problems during the installing proccess (repeating the install proccess doesn't help farther, no warnings, just less text output), but there is no pp.exe or something similar. I'm using Windows XP, all compilations were done on the c drive. perl -v "This is perl 5, version 12, subversion 2 (v5.12.2) built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread"

  • Writing an app with Perl and Ruby?

    - by Jeff Erickson
    I am working on a project that is mostly Ruby on Rails. However, I need to generate and parse Excel files in this project (I know, I know...), so I've been using Perl's Spreadsheet::WriteExcel and Spreadsheet::ParseExcel which work well. However, what is the best way to combine this use of Perl with the larger Ruby on Rails app? Is calling the Perl script with backticks the kosher way to go about this? It feels a little hacky to me, but if that is the only (or best) way, then that's what I'll do. I wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has some suggestions or advise. Thank you!

  • utf8 problem with Perl and XML::Parser

    - by René Nyffenegger
    I encountered a problem dealing with utf8, XML and Perl. The following is the smallest piece of code and data in order to reproduce the problem. Here's an XML file that needs to be parsed: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <test> <words>???????????? ??????? ????????? ???? ???????????? ??????</words> <words>???????????? ??????? ????????? ???? ???????????? ??????</words> <words>???????????? ??????? ????????? ???? ???????????? ??????</words> [<words> .... </words> 148 times repeated] <words>???????????? ??????? ????????? ???? ???????????? ??????</words> <words>???????????? ??????? ????????? ???? ???????????? ??????</words> </test> The parsing is done with this perl script: use warnings; use strict; use XML::Parser; use Data::Dump; my $in_words = 0; my $xml_parser=new XML::Parser(Style=>'Stream'); $xml_parser->setHandlers ( Start => \&start_element, End => \&end_element, Char => \&character_data, Default => \&default); open OUT, '>out.txt'; binmode (OUT, ":utf8"); open XML, 'xml_test.xml' or die; $xml_parser->parse(*XML); close XML; close OUT; sub start_element { my($parseinst, $element, %attributes) = @_; if ($element eq 'words') { $in_words = 1; } else { $in_words = 0; } } sub end_element { my($parseinst, $element, %attributes) = @_; if ($element eq 'words') { $in_words = 0; } } sub default { # nothing to see here; } sub character_data { my($parseinst, $data) = @_; if ($in_words) { if ($in_words) { print OUT "$data\n"; } } } When the script is run, it produces the out.txt file. The problem is in this file on line 147. The 22th character (which in utf-8 consists of \xd6 \xb8) is split between the d6 and b8 with a new line. This should not happen. Now, I am interested if someone else has this problem or can reproduce it. And why I am getting this problem. I am running this script on Windows: C:\temp>perl -v This is perl, v5.10.0 built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread (with 5 registered patches, see perl -V for more detail) Copyright 1987-2007, Larry Wall Binary build 1003 [285500] provided by ActiveState http://www.ActiveState.com Built May 13 2008 16:52:49

  • handling long running large transactions with perl dbi

    - by 1stdayonthejob
    I've got a large transaction comprising of getting lots of data from database A, do some manipulations with this data, then inserting the manipulated data into database B. I've only got permissions to select in database A but I can create tables and insert/update etc in database B. The manipulation and insertion part is written in perl and already in use for loading data into database B from other data sources, so all that's required is to get the necessary data from database A and using it to initialize the perl classes. How can I go about doing this so I can easily track back and pick up from where the error happened if any error occurs during the manipulation or insertion procedures (database disconnection, problems with class initialization because of invalid values, hard disk failure etc...)? Doing the transaction in one go doesn't seem like a good option because the amount data from database A means it would take at least a day or 2 for data manipulation and insertion into database B. The data from database A can be grouped into around 1000 groups using unique keys, with each key containing 1000s of rows each. One way I thought I could do is to write a script that does commits per group, meaning I've got to track which group has already been inserted into database B. The only way I can think of to track the progress of which groups have been processed or not is either in a log file or in a table in database B. A second way I thought could work is to dump all the necessary fields needed for loading the classes for manipulation and insertion into a flatfile, read the file to initialize the classes and insert into database B. This also means that I got to do some logging, but should narrow it down to the exact row in the flatfile if any error occurs. The script will look something like this: use strict; use warnings; use DBI; #connect to database A my $dbh = DBI->connect('dbi:oracle:my_db', $user, $password, { RaiseError => 1, AutoCommit => 0 }); #statement to get data based on group unique key my $sth = $dbh->prepare($my_sql); my @groups; #I have a list of this already open my $fh, '>>', 'my_logfile' or die "can't open logfile $!"; eval { foreach my $g (@groups){ #subroutine to check if group has already been processed, either from log file or from database table next if is_processed($g); $sth->execute($g); my $data = $sth->fetchall_arrayref; #manipulate $data, then use it to load perl classes for insertion into database B #. #. #. } print $fh "$g\n"; }; if ($@){ $dbh->rollback; die "something wrong...rollback"; } So if any errors do occur, I can just run this script again and it should skip the groups or rows that have been processed and continue. Both these methods is just variations on the same theme, and both require going back to where I've been tracking my progress (in table or file), skip the ones that've been commited to database B and process the remaining data. I'm sure there's a better way of doing this but am struggling to think of other solutions. Is there another way of handling large transactions between databases that require data manipulation between getting data out from one and inserting into another? The process doesn't need to be all in Perl, as long as I can reuse the perl classes for manipulating and inserting the data into the database.

  • Perl cron job stays running

    - by Dylan
    I'm currently using a cron job to have a Perl script that tells my Arduino to cycle my aquaponics system and all is well, except the Perl script doesn't die as intended. Here is my cron job: */15 * * * * /home/dburke/scripts/hal/bin/main.pl cycle And below is my Perl script: #!/usr/bin/perl -w # Sample Perl script to transmit number # to Arduino then listen for the Arduino # to echo it back use strict; use Device::SerialPort; use Switch; use Time::HiRes qw ( alarm ); $|++; # Set up the serial port # 19200, 81N on the USB ftdi driver my $device = '/dev/arduino0'; # Tomoc has to use a different tty for testing #$device = '/dev/ttyS0'; my $port = new Device::SerialPort ($device) or die('Unable to open connection to device');; $port->databits(8); $port->baudrate(19200); $port->parity("none"); $port->stopbits(1); my $lastChoice = ' '; my $pid = fork(); my $signalOut; my $args = shift(@ARGV); # Parent must wait for child to exit before exiting itself on CTRL+C $SIG{'INT'} = sub { waitpid($pid,0) if $pid != 0; exit(0); }; # What child process should do if($pid == 0) { # Poll to see if any data is coming in print "\nListening...\n\n"; while (1) { my $incmsg = $port->lookfor(9); # If we get data, then print it if ($incmsg) { print "\nFrom arduino: " . $incmsg . "\n\n"; } } } # What parent process should do else { if ($args eq "cycle") { my $stop = 0; sleep(1); $SIG{ALRM} = sub { print "Expecting plant bed to be full; please check.\n"; $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2\n"; $stop = 1; }; $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1\n"; print "Waiting for plant bed to fill...\n"; alarm (420); while ($stop == 0) { sleep(2); } die "Done."; } else { sleep(1); my $choice = ' '; print "Please pick an option you'd like to use:\n"; while(1) { print " [1] Cycle [2] Relay OFF [3] Relay ON [4] Config [$lastChoice]: "; chomp($choice = <STDIN>); switch ($choice) { case /1/ { $SIG{ALRM} = sub { print "Expecting plant bed to be full; please check.\n"; $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2\n"; }; $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1\n"; print "Waiting for plant bed to fill...\n"; alarm (420); $lastChoice = $choice; } case /2/ { $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2"; $lastChoice = $choice; } case /3/ { $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1"; $lastChoice = $choice; } case /4/ { print "There is no configuration available yet. Please stab the developer."; } else { print "Please select a valid option.\n\n"; } } } } } Why wouldn't it die from the statement die "Done.";? It runs fine from the command line and also interprets the 'cycle' argument fine. When it runs in cron it runs fine, however, the process never dies and while each process doesn't continue to cycle the system it does seem to be looping in some way due to the fact that it ups my system load very quickly. If you'd like more information, just ask. EDIT: I have changed to code to: #!/usr/bin/perl -w # Sample Perl script to transmit number # to Arduino then listen for the Arduino # to echo it back use strict; use Device::SerialPort; use Switch; use Time::HiRes qw ( alarm ); $|++; # Set up the serial port # 19200, 81N on the USB ftdi driver my $device = '/dev/arduino0'; # Tomoc has to use a different tty for testing #$device = '/dev/ttyS0'; my $port = new Device::SerialPort ($device) or die('Unable to open connection to device');; $port->databits(8); $port->baudrate(19200); $port->parity("none"); $port->stopbits(1); my $lastChoice = ' '; my $signalOut; my $args = shift(@ARGV); # Parent must wait for child to exit before exiting itself on CTRL+C if ($args eq "cycle") { open (LOG, '>>log.txt'); print LOG "Cycle started.\n"; my $stop = 0; sleep(2); $SIG{ALRM} = sub { print "Expecting plant bed to be full; please check.\n"; $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2\n"; $stop = 1; }; $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1\n"; print "Waiting for plant bed to fill...\n"; print LOG "Alarm is being set.\n"; alarm (420); print LOG "Alarm is set.\n"; while ($stop == 0) { print LOG "In while-sleep loop.\n"; sleep(2); } print LOG "The loop has been escaped.\n"; die "Done."; print LOG "No one should ever see this."; } else { my $pid = fork(); $SIG{'INT'} = sub { waitpid($pid,0) if $pid != 0; exit(0); }; # What child process should do if($pid == 0) { # Poll to see if any data is coming in print "\nListening...\n\n"; while (1) { my $incmsg = $port->lookfor(9); # If we get data, then print it if ($incmsg) { print "\nFrom arduino: " . $incmsg . "\n\n"; } } } # What parent process should do else { sleep(1); my $choice = ' '; print "Please pick an option you'd like to use:\n"; while(1) { print " [1] Cycle [2] Relay OFF [3] Relay ON [4] Config [$lastChoice]: "; chomp($choice = <STDIN>); switch ($choice) { case /1/ { $SIG{ALRM} = sub { print "Expecting plant bed to be full; please check.\n"; $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2\n"; }; $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1\n"; print "Waiting for plant bed to fill...\n"; alarm (420); $lastChoice = $choice; } case /2/ { $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2"; $lastChoice = $choice; } case /3/ { $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1"; $lastChoice = $choice; } case /4/ { print "There is no configuration available yet. • Rewriting a Subdomain with mod-rewrite

    - by resonantmedia
    I have a project that uses the moodle library. I had to change the URL from moodle.example.com to learn.example.com, due to a client request. I thought this would be an easy change, but alas moodle inserts all links and images in with the complete url instead of the relative url. Is it possible using mod-rewrite to point all requests to moodle.example.com to learn.example.com and maintain the query string? Example: I want a request to: http://moodle.example.com/course/view.php?id=2&topic=1 to go to http://learn.example.com/course/view.php?id=2&topic=1. Is this possible? Thanks, Josh

  • Mod-Rewrite rules are breaking 404 routing

    - by Sparky672
    I am using the following mod-rewrite in my .htaccess file: RewriteRule ^$ pages/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ pages/$1 [L] The intention is to hide the subdirectory called /pages/ from displaying in the URL. So this: http://mysite.com/pages/home.html Will look like this: http://mysite.com/home.html It works but there are some unintended consequences. As a direct result of the .htaccess code I posted above, my 404 routing is no longer working at all. Anything that should trigger a 404 error page is instead generating a 500 Server Error. How to fix?

  • mod,prime -> inverse possible

    - by Piet
    Hi all. I was wondering if one can do the following: We have: X is a product of N-primes, thus I assume unique. C is a constant. We can assure that C is a number that is part of the N-primes or not. Whichever will work best. Thus: X mod C = Z We have Z and C and we know that X was a product of N-primes, where N is restricted lets say first 100 primes. Is there anyway we can get back X?

  • Apache mod-rewrite for shorter urls

    - by Don
    Is it possible do do something like this with mod-rewrite? Current url: www.example.com/Departments/dynamicPage.php?DeptID=10&DeptName=HR to set up a rewrite so: www.example.com/hr could redirect to the above (with the arguments)? I know I could create an "hr" folder on the root level and put in an html page with a meta refresh, but I hate the extra clutter. I don't think a .htaccess 301 is possible, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm looking for an elegant solution that can be added to for future instances.

  • Awesome Mod Adds Cooperative Multiplayer to Super Mario 64

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    The lack of multiplayer action in Super Mario 64 bothered one game modder so much he hacked the game to include cooperative multiplayer as well as online play. Check out the video to see it in action. To play the new version of the game you’ll either need a jailbroken Wii (so you can load a homebrew WAD file) or an N64 PC emulator. You can grab the WAD file for the Wii here or the necessary files for the PC emulator here. For more information about other great mod projects from the author of this mod, hit up the link below. • phpBB3 antispam: mod for "patrolling" the forum?

    - by STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
    I've been working on various antispam measure in a phpBB3-based forum I host. Now I was thinking of an extension/mod that ties in with editing of posts (and later perhaps signatures/profiles) in that new text or edited text defaults to something like "not patrolled" and moderators could then in a special queue review text that contains links or similar item (based on heuristics). Now the question: does such a mod exist (I didn't find one)? If it does exist and anyone has used it (or them), please include your experiences with it in the answer.
