  • What is a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)?

    A Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)  can also be called a traditional database that uses a Structured Query Language (SQL) to provide access to stored data while insuring the integrity of the data. The data is stored in a collection of tables that is defined by relationships between data items. In addition, data permitted to be joined in new relationships. Traditional databases primarily process data through transactions called transaction processing. Transaction processing is the methodology of grouping related business operations based predefined business events. An example of this can be seen when a person attempts to purchase an item from an online e-tailor. The business must execute specific operations for a related  business event. In this case, a business must store the following information: Customer Info, Order Info, Order Item Info, Customer Payment Data, Payment Results, and Current Order Status.   • Is there an online storage service that works with Windows 7 Backup and Restore? [closed]

    I love Windows 7 Backup and Restore.. However, I kind of find it inconvenient to use external hard drive, plug it in, take it out, put it away safely etc.. Is there an online storage service to which Windows Backup can save the backup files to? Can I make Windows Backup store the backed up data to an online storage service? I do not want to manually upload the backup files. I want it to save directly to the cloud. Doesn't matter if the service costs me some $$$. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition.

    Hello, I recentely discovered an ability to backup personal data to online server but I was never surprised when I didn't found a popular service provides filtering capabilities, i.e. all of them they backup all the contents of specific folder. Are there any free options with filtering? To be specific, I need following features: Backup to online server. Automatic but bandwidth-transparent backup, i.e. it will backup my files automatically but won't try to do it if I'm heavily using the computer or internet at the moment. Individual filtering settings for folders, i.e. I want to specify which files to backup in every folder. Some free plan (since I'm not going to use more than 500MB of space).

    The Trace File Source adapter is a useful addition to your SSIS toolbox.  It allows you to read 2005 and 2008 profiler traces stored as .trc files and read them into the Data Flow.  From there you can perform filtering and analysis using the power of SSIS. There is no need for a SQL Server connection this just uses the trace file. Example Usages Cache warming for SQL Server Analysis Services Reading the flight recorder Find out the longest running queries on a server Analyze statements for CPU, memory by user or some other criteria you choose Properties The Trace File Source adapter has two properties, both of which combine to control the source trace file that is read at runtime. SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 trace files are supported for both the Database Engine (SQL Server) and Analysis Services. The properties are managed by the Editor form or can be set directly from the Properties Grid in Visual Studio. Property Type Description AccessMode Enumeration This property determines how the Filename property is interpreted. The values available are: DirectInput Variable Filename String This property holds the path for trace file to load (*.trc). The value is either a full path, or the name of a variable which contains the full path to the trace file, depending on the AccessMode property. Trace Column Definition Hopefully the majority of you can skip this section entirely, but if you encounter some problems processing a trace file this may explain it and allow you to fix the problem. The component is built upon the trace management API provided by Microsoft. Unfortunately API methods that expose the schema of a trace file have known issues and are unreliable, put simply the data often differs from what was specified. To overcome these limitations the component uses  some simple XML files. These files enable the trace column data types and sizing attributes to be overridden. For example SQL Server Profiler or TMO generated structures define EventClass as an integer, but the real value is a string. TraceDataColumnsSQL.xml  - SQL Server Database Engine Trace Columns TraceDataColumnsAS.xml    - SQL Server Analysis Services Trace Columns The files can be found in the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\PipelineComponents folder, e.g. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\PipelineComponents\TraceDataColumnsSQL.xml" "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\PipelineComponents\TraceDataColumnsAS.xml" If at runtime the component encounters a type conversion or sizing error it is most likely due to a discrepancy between the column definition as reported by the API and the actual value encountered. Whilst most common issues have already been fixed through these files we have implemented specific exception traps to direct you to the files to enable you to fix any further issues due to different usage or data scenarios that we have not tested. An example error that you can fix through these files is shown below. Buffer exception writing value to column 'Column Name'. The string value is 999 characters in length, the column is only 111. Columns can be overridden by the TraceDataColumns XML files in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\PipelineComponents\TraceDataColumnsAS.xml". Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. Finally you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox manually. Right-click the toolbox, and select Choose Items.... Select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab, and then check the Trace File Source transformation in the Choose Toolbox Items window. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component? We recommend you follow best practice and apply the current Microsoft SQL Server Service pack to your SQL Server servers and workstations. Please note that the Microsoft Trace classes used in the component are not supported on 64-bit platforms. To use the Trace File Source on a 64-bit host you need to ensure you have the 32-bit (x86) tools available, and the way you execute your package is setup to use them, please see the help topic 64-bit Considerations for Integration Services for more details.   • How to download source code with apt-get?

    I'm trying to download source code of certain packages, for example rhythmbox, for learning purposes. I want to do this through apt-get, with the apt-get source command. For some reason, apt-get can't seem to find any package. I've tried several packages, and I keep getting this output from apt-get: $ apt-get source rhythmbox Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to find a source package for rhythmbox I've been searching for answers for quite some time now, but I can't find anyone with the same issue. apt-get works fine with installing and updating so apt-get works fine in my opinion. During the search I also learned that I had to enable the 'source code repositories' in Software Sources, so that's also enabled. I am aware of the fact that (maybe only for certain packages, not sure) source packages can also be downloaded with bzr from Launchpad, but I want to know why this method won't work. Thanks in advance!

  • Download mirrors down after fresh installation

    I dont know whats the problem but it seems after every fresh installation of ubuntu in any device (have started noticing this problem since ubuntu 11.04) the connection to the software sources are down. I cannot download any software from either apt-get or software center. Also i cannot use the Universal Source for packages like chromium, etc. And then suddenly after a few days, the mirrors are back up again!! Its normal back again! I dont know what the problem is, but it happens every time. Is there any solution to this or we just have to wait for a few days till the mirrors are back again? (and I have also tried changing the download server, It doesn't helps!)

To do this, I ran the following command: sudo apt-get install build-essential As this runs, it connects (or tries to connect) to the server tw.archive.ubuntu.com. But the server is not working. How can I fix this and get gcc installed? Note: the Taiwan mirror is down as of 2012-06-01 0352. See thread here.   • DataSets and XML - The Simplistic Approach

    One of the first ways I learned how to read xml data from external data sources was by using a DataSet’s ReadXML function. This function takes file path for an XML document and then converts it to a Dataset. This functionality is great when you need a simple way to process an XML document.  In addition the DataSet object also offers a simple way to save data in an xml format by using the WriteXML function. This function saves the current data in the DataSet to an XML file to be used later. DataSet ds  = New DataSet();String filePath = “http://www.yourdomain.com/someData.xml”;String fileSavePath = “C:\Temp\Test.xml”//Read file for this locationds.readxml(filePath);//Save file to this locationds.writexml(fileSavePath); I have used the ReadXML function before when consuming data from external Rss feeds to display on one of my sites.  It allows me to quickly pull in data from external sites with little to no processing.   • how to uninstall sphinx server

    I installed (from sources) yesterday sphinx server and didn't think of configuring it properly, so I left the default installation directory (/usr/local). Today I realized that it created all of it's directories inside that directory, instead of creating its own (as I wrongly thought). So today I started again the installation and specified explicitly the location where to install. After that I removed the previous directories from /usr/local that were created when the first installation was done (bin, etc, var). So I thought of giving it a test. I created the .conf file and wanted to run the indexer. But now, the indexer always tries to search the .conf file in the old location (obviously does not find anything) and when I specify where to find the .conf file it gives me errors for each of the configuration settings present. I know I did something wrong when I deleted manually those files and that's why I'm asking you if have any ideas how to correctly uninstall sphinx. Thank you.

  • Cacti not working for SNMP data sources

    I installed packages cacti and snmpd on a Debian server. I'm able to display common graphs in Cacti (such as memory usage, load average, logged in users, etc) using the data templates listed as Unix. Now I want to replace these graphs with new ones using SNMP data sources, because I see there is also CPU usage and because it's not excluded I have to manage multiple hosts in the future. So, I installed snmpd on the machine and left the snmpd.conf as it is. In Cacti, I created three new data sources from SNMP templates for 127.0.0.1 host: ucd/net - CPU Usage - Nice ucd/net - CPU Usage - System ucd/net - CPU Usage - User Then I created a new graph from template ucd/net - CPU Usage, and select the three data sources in the Graph Item Fields section. Graph is now enabled and running, but empty. No data have been collected. Under Console - Devices my SNMP host is listed as up and running: System:Linux ip-xx-xx-xxx-xxx 3.2.0-23-virtual #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 22:29:03 UTC 2012 x86_64 Uptime: 929267 (0 days, 2 hours, 34 minutes) Hostname: ip-xx-xx-xxx-xxx Location: Sitting on the Dock of the Bay Contact: Me [email protected] In SNMP Options I left all as it is: SNMP Version: Version 1 SNMP Community: public SNMP Timeout: 500 ms Maximum OID's Per Get Request: 10 In Console - Utilities - Cacti Log I have multiple warning (two for each data source) every 5 minutes: 10/29/2012 01:45:01 PM - CMDPHP: Poller[0] Host[2] DS[18] WARNING: Result from SNMP not valid.   • A Few of My Favorite HTML5 and CSS3 Online Tools

    I really enjoy coding up HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript applications but there are some things that I’m better off writing with the help of a development tool. For example, CSS3 gradients aren’t exactly the most fun thing to write by hand and the same could be said for animations, transforms, or styles that require various vendor extensions. There are a lot of online tools that can simplify building HTML5/CSS3 sites and increase productivity in the process so I thought I’d put together a post on a few of my favorites tools. HTML5 Boilerplate HTML5 Boilerplate provides a great way to get started building HTML5 sites. It includes many best practices out of the box and even includes a few tricks that many people don’t even know about. The custom download option allows you to pick the features that you want to include in the files that’s generated. You can read more about it here.   Initializr Although HTML5 Boilerplate provides a great foundation for starting HTML5 sites, it focuses on providing a starting shell structure (namely an html page, JavaScript files, and a CSS stylesheet) and doesn’t include much in the way of page content to get started with. Initializer builds on HTML5 Boilerplate and provides an initial test page that can be tweaked to meet your needs. It also provides several different customization options to include/exclude features. CSS3 Maker CSS3 provides a lot of great features ranging from gradient support to rounded corners. Although many of the features are fairly straightforward there are some that are pretty involved such as gradients, animations, and really any styles that require custom vendor extensions to use across browsers. Sure, you can type everything by hand, but sites such as CSS3 Maker provide a visual way to generate CSS3 styles. CSS3, Please! CSS3, Please! is a code generation tool that can be used to generate cross-browser CSS3 styles quickly and easily. All of the main things you can do with CSS3 are available including a clever way to visually generate CSS3 transform styles.       Ultimate CSS Gradient Generator CSS3 Maker (above) has a gradient generator built-in but my favorite tool for creating CSS3 gradients is the Ultimate CSS Gradient Generator. If you’ve created gradients in tools like Photoshop then you’ll love what this tool has to offer especially since it makes it extremely straightforward to work with different gradient stops. @font-face Fonts Although @font-face has been available for awhile, I think fonts are cool and wanted to mention a site that provides a lot of font choices. When used correctly fonts can really enhance a page and when used incorrectly (think Comic Sans) they can absolutely ruin a page. Several sites exist that provide fonts that can be used with @font-face definitions in CSS style sheets. One of my favorites is Font Squirrel.   HTML5 & CSS3 Support and Tests Interested in knowing what HTML5 and CSS3 features a given browser supports? Want to know how various browsers stack up with each other as far as HTML5/CSS3 support. Look no further than the HTML5 & CSS3 Support page or the HTML5 Test page.   CSS3 Easing Animation Tool CSS3 animations aren’t widely supported across browsers right now (I’m not really using them at this point) but they do offer a lot of promise. Creating easings for animations can definitely be a challenge but they’re something that are critical for adding that “professional touch” to your animations. Fortunately you can use the Ceaser CSS Easing Animation Tool to simplify the process and handle animation easing with…...ease.   There are several other online tools that I like but these are some of the ones I find myself using the most.   • Listen to Online Radio with Antenna

    Are you looking for some fresh new music to listen to at home or at work? With Antenna you can listen to online radio stations from all over the world. Note: Requires Adobe AIR (download link at bottom of article). Antenna in Action Once you have completed the installation and started Antenna up this is the window that you will see. The left side will have a “browsing pane” where you can search for the stations that you would like to listen to using the various categories. Based on the stations that you choose the background map will change location to match the stations locations. Here is a closer look at the “Categories Bar”. For our first example we used the “Country Category” to find our first station to listen to. When you choose a country you will be presented with a list of the stations available for that country. To start listening to a particular station just double click on the appropriate entry line. A closer look at the “browser pane” with our first station playing. Notice the “Reliability Indicator” that will be available for each listing…some may be better than others and you can use this to choose the best streaming stations from the list. In the upper left corner you will notice three icons…each will open a small pop-up window with a specific purpose. The first icon will open up the “About Window”. If you need to contact Antenna’s creator or would like to place a request for a station to be added to the app then this is the best way to do it. The second icon will open up a Antenna specific chat window. The third icon will allow you to set a default location and make adjustments to some of the app’s settings. Recording Audio The “Recording Function” is the only area where we experienced some “quirkiness” with the app. To start recording press the “Round White Button”… Note: Based on feedback on the app creator’s webpage some people have experienced the same problem as we did during our tests with the app failing to complete the recordings. Hopefully this bug will be fixed with the next release. Once recording has started the button will turn red. Click on the button again to stop recording. Once you have stopped recording you will see the following message window appear and the main window will be shaded over with a whitish color until you click “OK”. Conclusion Regardless of the slight quirkiness in recording online music Antenna more than makes up for it with the terrific selection of online stations and streaming capability.   • Does the "security" repository provides anything not found in the "updates" repository?

    For the limited number of package I looked at (e.g. apache), I found that the package version in the updates repository is always newer than or equal to the version available in the security repository (provided that they exist). This gives me the impression that all security patches posted to the security repository are also posted to the updates repository. If this is true, I can remove all <release_name>-security entries in my apt sources.list and the <release_name>-updates entries will still give me the security patches. This will speed up apt-get update quite a bit. The best documentation I can found regarding the repositories is on the community help page "Important Security Updates (raring-security)". Patches for security vulnerabilities in Ubuntu packages. They are managed by the Ubuntu Security Team and are designed to change the behavior of the package as little as possible -- in fact, the minimum required to resolve the security problem. As a result, they tend to be very low-risk to apply and all users are urged to apply security updates. "Recommended Updates (raring-updates)". Updates for serious bugs in Ubuntu packaging that do not affect the security of the system. However, it does not mention whether the updates repository also includes everything in the security repository. Can anyone confirm (or disconfirm) this?

  • Update get's stuck unpacking bad package, won't continue without it

    Removing the package from cache, and disabling Recommended Updates in Software Sources gives me an error saying I need to install this package. I've tried to update several times, but it keeps hanging on unpacking the ubuntu-sso-client package. Which forces me to hard-reset to unlock the package manager. I've tried: sudo dpkg --configure -a No errors sudo apt-get upgrade --fix-broken Wants me to reinstall said package, resulting in it hanging Removing the package: sudo rm -f /var/cache/apt/archives/ubuntu-sso-client_1.0.8-0ubuntu1_all.deb Results in the same effect, it re-downloads then hangs I can de-select Recommended Updates but I get error messages when I try to update again: E: The package ubuntu-sso-client needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. Which won't let me continue Finally re-enabling the source, I try to remove ubuntu-sso sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-sso-client It removes a bunch of other packages but complains about the package: dpkg: error processing ubuntu-sso-client (--remove): Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. Reinstalling ubuntu-sso-client hangs :( I'm at my wits end, any ideas? I would be nice to install all the other updates but this one is preventing it.

  • “Unplugged” LIDNUG online talk with me on Monday (April 16th)

  • My VS 2010 and ASP.NET 4 Talks Online

    The past 7 years I’ve done an annual all day event in Arizona – organized by the most excellent Scott Cate (who always does a phenomenal job organizing the event and making it a great one). Earlier this month I visited and presented 4+ hours of content covering VS 2010, ASP.NET 4 and ASP.NET MVC 2.  NextSlide.com – a great .NET shop local to Arizona who has a great product for sharing presentations – volunteered to record the talks and publish them for free using their online presentation tool.  The recordings they did turned out really, really great – and their online player (which combines slides + camera of me + demos in one experience) is awesome.  Below you can watch the first two segments of my event – which cover VS 2010 and ASP.NET 4 – for free online using the NextSlide.com player experience.  I’ll post a link to my ASP.NET MVC 2 segment a little later in a separate blog post.  If you’ve never seen my present these talks before and are interested in the content then I’d recommend checking them out – as these recordings do a really good job capturing them.
