I'm not sure who came up with the original, but they deserve credit wherever they are: “A good system administrator is a bored system administrator.” As a DBA, this really rings true for me.   • Oracle’s Sun Server X4-8 with Built-in Elastic Computing

    We are excited to announce the release of Oracle's new 8-socket server, Sun Server X4-8. It’s the most flexible 8-socket x86 server Oracle has ever designed, and also the most powerful. Not only does it use the fastest Intel® Xeon® E7 v2 processors, but also its memory, I/O and storage subsystems are all designed for maximum performance and throughput. Like its predecessor, the Sun Server X4-8 uses a “glueless” design that allows for maximum performance for Oracle Database, while also reducing power consumption and improving reliability. The specs are pretty impressive. Sun Server X4-8 supports 120 cores (or 240 threads), 6 TB memory, 9.6 TB HDD capacity or 3.2 TB SSD capacity, contains 16 PCIe Gen 3 I/O expansion slots, and allows for up to 6.4 TB Sun Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe Cards. The Sun Server X4-8 is also the most dense x86 server with its 5U chassis, allowing 60% higher rack-level core and DIMM slot density than the competition.  There has been a lot of innovation in Oracle’s x86 product line, but the latest and most significant is a capability called elastic computing. This new capability is built into each Sun Server X4-8.   Elastic computing starts with the Intel processor. While Intel provides a wide range of processors each with a fixed combination of core count, operational frequency, and power consumption, customers have been forced to make tradeoffs when they select a particular processor. They have had to make educated guesses on which particular processor (core count/frequency/cache size) will be best suited for the workload they intend to execute on the server.Oracle and Intel worked jointly to define a new processor, the Intel Xeon E7-8895 v2 for the Sun Server X4-8, that has unique characteristics and effectively combines the capabilities of three different Xeon processors into a single processor. Oracle system design engineers worked closely with Oracle’s operating system development teams to achieve the ability to vary the core count and operating frequency of the Xeon E7-8895 v2 processor with time without the need for a system level reboot.  Along with the new processor, enhancements have been made to the system BIOS, Oracle Solaris, and Oracle Linux, which allow the processors in the system to dynamically clock up to faster speeds as cores are disabled and to reach higher maximum turbo frequencies for the remaining active cores.   • FBX SDK Not Converting Child Node Coordinate Systems

    I am trying to import a scene into my application from an fbx file. In 3DS Max, the scene and it’s local translations are as follows: Root (0, 0, 0) '-Sphere001 (-15, 30, 0) ' '-Sphere002 (-2, -30, 0) ' '-Sphere003 (-30, -20, 0) '-Cube001 (35, -15, 0) This is the code that I am using to get the translations of each node: FbxDouble3 fbxPosition = pChild->LclTranslation.Get(); FbxDouble3 fbxRotation = pChild->LclRotation.Get(); FbxDouble3 fbxScale = pChild->LclScaling.Get(); When I try to import the scene, the first node from the scene is getting converted to a right handed system, using this conversion: (X, Z, -Y), but none of their child nodes are. after importing the scene, the local translations I get are as follows: Root (0, 0, 0) --Sphere001 (-15, 0, -30) - converted ----Sphere002 (-2, -30, 0) - not converted ------Sphere003 (-30, -20, 0) - not converted --Cube001 (35, 0, 15) - converted Can anybody help me make sense of this?     Until recently, the SQL Server Enterprise Edition per processor (socket) licensing model resulted in only 2 or 3 server system configurations being the preferred choice. Determine the number of sockets: 2, 4 or 8. Then select the processor with the most compute capability at that socket count level.     I've got 6 points in 3D space: A,B,C,D,E,F, that represent 4 vectors. AB is perpendicular to AC and DE is perpendicular to DF. I need to find a transformation matrix M, that transforms AB to DE and AC to DF. In other words: M·AB=DE, M·AC=DF If no scaling was involved, this could be solved with a simple rotation matrix. But since the ratios |AB|/|DE|, |AC|/|DF| might be different, I'm not sure how to proceed.

  • Systems Not Booting after Ubuntu installation

    I recently installed Ubuntu on my PC dual-booted with Windows 7. After rebooting it went through the usual startup screens, but the OS selection screen never shows up. I cannot get either system to boot. I have formatted the partition holding the Ubuntu to no avail and I really don't want to get rid of Windows. I am currently stuck using the Live session disk to boot. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    I don't know if this is a valid question, but: What kind of window manager do games use which have internal frames (Frames inside frames)? Does this differ between the programming languages (Are e.g. in Java the AWT/Swing libraries used to manage these and other graphical elements, such as buttons,or is this to restrictive (speed, graphical possibilities?)) A special example would be EVE Online, where the client can use the ingame windows like on a normal desktop.

Random Map traversal Path finding e.g. Cost based Traversing Algorithms i.e. A* I have already found a great answer to this type of question with the below link, but I feel that this answer is tailored to FPS. If anyone could add to this and make it specific to tower defense games then I would be truly great-full. How is AI most commonly implemented in popular games?     I just developed my first non-trivial android app. It was a complete nightmare. I came up with an idea, build the app, changed my idea, and implemented a lot of input from others on new features. All in all my app took 10 times longer than I think that it should have, it is almost impossible to look the source code and tell what's going on with the classes, and may or may not have unused methods that I'll never be able to find... So I would like an opinion from those of you with experience on how to plan out my designs for the future. I created a flow chart (pencil drawn) of a plan: I would like constructive criticism.
